People seem to be experiencing Buttigieg and Beto O'Rourke as occupying the same niche.

Try to explain the psychological structure of these emotions.

You might question the proposition. I'm getting it from articles like "Buttigieg is leaving Beto in the dust/The ninth installment of the Post Pundit 2020 Power Ranking" (WaPo). From the comments there: "Buttigieg's better than Beto's kennedy-look-alike charm!" "[Buttigieg is] Kind of like Beto but with substance," "And maturity," "Buttiegiege definitely surpasses Beto. As someone said, when Beto speaks, it's like there is dance music in his head. Mayor Pete talks substance."

Rob म्हणाले...

Let's say for the sake of argument that Buttigieg is too young and holds too minor an office to be a serious contender for president in a year when the Democrats shouldn't be inclined to throw a Hail Mary pass. But how does he improve his resume to make a credible run for president in four or eight years?

Buttigieg's problem is that he has no good path to higher office. The odds are long against a Democrat getting elected governor or senator in Indiana. If Buttigieg has enough of a following in South Bend and the map of the district cooperates, he might be able to get elected to the House, but where does he go from there?

So that leaves the possibility of burnishing his resume with a cabinet position in a Democratic administration, for as much good as that might do, or becoming vice president, which would be ideal. Perhaps lightning will strike and he'll be at the top of the ticket. But if it doesn't, the second slot would be a real boon to him, though it would probably work for the party only if there's a POC or a woman, or a female POC known as Kamala Harris, running for president. (It's hard to imagine Democrats in 2020 fielding a ticket with two white males on the ticket, even if one of them happens to be gay.)

In the Progressive Totem, Mayor Pete, because he is gay, ranks ahead of Beto.

Neither of them are pound-the-table reactionaries like Bernie and Warren and, at times, Kamala and Booker and Gillibrand. Senators are basically B-movie actors.

Beto and Mayor Pete both have somewhat upbeat personalities. So I’d say their personality approach is somewhat the same. Genial and mostly positive. That’s the “same lane” and probably a good approach against Trump. The other Dems have personality flaws worse than Trump’s, except Klobuchar. But she has no personality. She’s basically a non-entity like she is in the Senate.

As for substance, there’s nothing Mayor Pete or Beto are running on except Open Borders and Climate Change Disaster. These are The Issues for Rich White Progressives. . Open Borders is basically another form of Compassionate Conservativism. And Climate Change Disaster undercuts their positive approach. You need the Mad Sciebtist Bernie Approach on this stuff. But that approach is electoral doom.

Mayor Pete and Beto should ditch Clinate Change Disaster and Open Borders. These are losing issues.

Virgil Hilts म्हणाले...

Ann, is Mayor Pete your favorite now? I'm a Republican, but would prefer him over any of the ones in the clown car.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

I recommend Mccullough's comment above. If I were a Democratic candidate in the primaries right now, I would consider taking the contrarian position vs the field on almost all the issues being discussed by the field. I would dismiss the Green New Deal as bullshit, and do so explicitly. I would be saying that Medicare for all is going to be a fucking fiscal disaster. I would be saying that free college for all is going to be a fucking fiscal disaster. I would be saying that open borders is a disaster for the country and that illegal immigration has to be greatly reduced.

I think such a candidate in the primaries would do better than almost any of these candidate all espousing the exact same policies are going to do in the first 3 or 4 primaries/caucuses. This is how Trump triumphed over the vast Republican field in 2016- to took contrary positions against the field and laid claim to 30-35% of the voters, and this was enough to eliminate everyone else but Ted Cruz, who unsurprisingly was the only other truly contrarian candidate in that field.

You have to find a way to separate yourself from a large field, and you have to do it before the first primary.

"Try to explain the psychological structure of these emotions."

Well, they are the emotions of people who want to appeal to not-totally-left women. Pete appeals to the pro-gay side, Beto appeals to the Kennedy sex appeal side. But Pete can more easily reach the emotions of women who want someone serious, not a hack. So the psychological structure of these emotions has to do with the framing of political personas to enable nice women to feel better about their vote and themselves. Since their emotions can swing elections, especially in swing states, this is actually a serious issue, even if at first blush neither candidate seems serious, albeit for different reasons.

"Same niche"

There's the younger, millennial commonality. More then the generational similarity, they are both positive, optimistic and happy. Not sad or depressive or complaining or critical or doomsday-ish. As Chasten Buttigieg said in his twitter feed: "relentlessly cheery 2020."

Just like Trump is hated and abhorred as Reagan was;
Trump is going to be as loved and adored as Reagan was.

Bilwick म्हणाले...

John Ray म्हणाले...

Beto Francisco literally and figuratively eats holy dirt -- that's not a president of even the local dog catcher's union. Mayor Petie -- well he has a service record, that's a plus for sure. But I'm not sure that most of the American public is ready for his "wife" as first whatever.

Whatever their respective fronts -- one the whirring Lycoming engine, the other a calm cool, collected mayor of a tiny city with a notable "wife", both promote the same ideology. So, do you want your Christmas gift wrapped in holy dirt or rainbow paper?

Lawrence Person म्हणाले...

It's interesting that all the "lanes" in the Democratic Presidential race seem to be getting muddled, but O'Rourke is a threat to almost all of them. He's a threat to Biden and Hickenlooper in the "sane white guy" lane, he's a threat to Kamala Harris as a media darling, and the Sanders people just flat hate his guts.

Neither Harris nor O'Rourke are doing well in the Twitter primary. Both are behind Marianne Williamson...

Martin म्हणाले...

My guess (and that's all it is) is that the media narrative, agreed over drinks in a Midtown Manhattan bar and confirmed by emails and private FB messages, is to treat Buttigieg and O'Rourke as a class, the "younger white males," to distinguish them from older white males such as Biden and Sanders, minority males such a Booker, and all the women.

First, knock O'Rourke down, because he is the bigger threat to those we really want, like Harris. O'Rourke has some national prominence and funding base b/c of his 2018 Senate run, so he could turn into a threat and has to go. Buttigieg has no national name or base and probably will have no legs, we'll take him down later if we have to, but that may not be necessary.

Then, deal with Sanders and Biden once he declares--too old, to male, too out of it, and allude to being too white without quite saying that. Dredge up the old "Bernie Bro" stuff from 2016, and the "Creepy Uncle Joe") stuff if we have to.

That basically leaves Booker and a bunch of women. We like Harris, Warren is showing electoral weakness, Booker is a bit weird but he IS minority.

Michael म्हणाले...

Oh, Lord. Wake me up in six months when the traffic has cleared a little.

JaimeRoberto म्हणाले...

I'll have to admit that I admire the persistence of a gay man with a name like Buttigieg running for president. That takes some guts.

AlbertAnonymous म्हणाले...

Why should I care? The media does what the media does. They’re both white. Lefties hate that and won’t vote for it (see, i.e. Biden, J. apologizing for his white male hereosexual privilege).

By the way, I wouldn’t have voted for Joe anyway (I think he’s being pushed because Dems think holding positions and titles = experience). But, if I had been inclined to vote for him, he lost me forever with the apology tour. Are white males suppoesd to voluntarily subjugate themselves to leftie Dems of color because ... reasons? Talk about racist.

hawkeyedjb म्हणाले...

"As for substance, there’s nothing Mayor Pete or Beto are running on except Open Borders and Climate Change Disaster."

Also true of every other candidate, with minor exceptions. Throw in racial reparations for a couple of others. But the Party's job is to find the most palatable guy/gal to carry out a predetermined program. Individual positions or quirks are for show. Any "substance" shown by any candidate is not really an asset, and may even detract from their suitability.

The Vault Dweller म्हणाले...

Buttgieg should put out a line somewhere in the media at some point that sounds like, "and I would like to thank and compliment President Trump for not making fun of my last name of Buttgieg. The restraint he is exhibiting is truly presidential."

It would help Buttgieg seem more serious and mature, which even though he seems to have a some what sober personality, he will have to fight against youthful and inexperienced images of himself given how young he is. It would be a nice little jab at President Trump that would please the Left, without going overboard. Also it would kind of put him and Trump as equals in stature, and get people in the Dem base at least feeling out a Buttgieg vs. Trump scenario.

tim maguire म्हणाले...

Why the same psychological niche?

They're both young white guys from outside the usual places who are new to the national stage. So there's that. They're both moderates with flimsy resumes. So there's that. And finally they're both not going to be the next president.

They have so much in common, they're practically the same person.

They share the demographic of being white men from blue college town cities in red states. But even more than that is the underlying sense that they are both running to be Kamala Harris's vice president running mate. Harris can't pick Biden, Bernie, or Booker from the pentad, so it has to be Buttigieg or Beto.

It's more likely that Joe Biden will get the nod and Kamala Harris will end up being his vice president running mate, now that Stacey Abrams has given him the finger. But we don't have to deal in reality yet and Joe is quite capable of losing to Bernie.

The Vault Dweller म्हणाले...

Putting on my jaded analyst hat, I don't know if stories like these are evidence that people and journalists naturally group Buttgieg and Beto together. Rather I view it as that people don't like Beto, and by don't like Beto I don't mean they don't like him personally, I mean they don't like him running in the 2020 Presidential primary, and by him running I mean him gaining support and donations that would otherwise go to a different Democrat primary candidate. I don't think those people think of Buttgieg as that alternative. By different primary candidate, I suspect Kamala Harris and possibly Joe Biden, but definitely not Bernie Sanders.

Taken as a whole, no, they are not looking for presidential qualities. They’re not looking for a boyfriend, exactly, but that is closer to the mark. They want a nice safe man who will look after them. Being gay makes him safe, so that’s attractive to many of them. I’m sure you’ve noticed this in your own life, among your own female friends.

Butt whatever is a big boy, but like you guys were with Obama, you want it to be off limits to mock your candidate.
