"I see everything as an opportunity. This is an opportunity once again to declare as strongly as possible opposition to anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim statements [and] white supremacist attitudes."

Said Nancy Pelosi, quoted in "Pelosi Says House Will Condemn All Hate as Anti-Semitism Debate Overshadows Congress" (NYT).
She took a shot at President Trump and his equivocal statements after the deadly white supremacist march in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017: “The president may think there are good people on both sides, we don’t share that view.”

Democrats are confident that they can unite the caucus, and they want to get the fight over [Ilhan] Omar out of the way....  Ms. Omar, a Minnesota Democrat and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, has been fending off accusations of anti-Semitism for weeks...

“It’s not about her, it’s about these forms of hatred,” Ms. Pelosi said about the resolution. Tensions boiled over in a closed-door meeting of House Democrats on Wednesday that pitted older Jewish Democrats who want a forthright statement condemning anti-Semitism against younger liberals....
For another perspective, here's "The Democratic Inquisition has come after Ilhan Omar/But strong popular resistance is foiling attempts to burn her at the political stake" by Richard Silverstein (Al Jazeera):

Stuck in its old ways and almost taking dictation from the Israel lobby, the Democratic congressional leadership decided to make an example of Omar by preparing a resolution denouncing anti-Semitism and by implication, her. This is the Democratic Party eating its young....

Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders have criticised the vicious campaign against Omar; other progressive members of Congress have also expressed their support for her. The New York Times, in a sympathetic report, noted the generational split between a younger generation of insurgents like Omar and older, veteran colleagues who started their political careers at a time when AIPAC held absolute control over these issues....

Today there is a countervailing force of progressive Democrats, Jews and non-Jews, who no longer take marching orders from the white, male, plutocrats of the Israel lobby. They have become strong enough not only to bring the likes of Omar to Congress but also to keep them there and grow their numbers.

Nancy Pants is just stupid. The Charlottesville episode OF COURSE had some good people on both side. Some generally think that Confederate statues should be torn down, because they evoke unpleasant memories of a racist South; some think Robert E. Lee and folks should remain as part of historical heritage. Some were violent Antifa mob actors spoiling for a fight; some were trouble-making white supremacists, perhaps even a few Neo-Klansmen.

But there's no doubt there were SOME good people on both sides.

If the Democrats won't condemn Omar's anti-Semitic remarks, then voters would be entitled to believe that the Democrats agree with those remarks. I don't know about what constitutes anti-semitism anymore.

I mean, I used to think I got it, but now I'm thinking I misunderstood.

Because if anti-semitism was as bad as I previously thought, I would think Jews would be leaving the Democrat Party in droves, being that they are obviously considered dual-loyalists there, and that the party can't even make a watered-down point about being against anti-semitism without backpedaling and saying that you need to speak out firmly against Islamophobia first.

Oh yeah: and blacks and the BLT sandwich.

Then, you even have your party's major presidential contenders speaking out for Ilhan Omar and her brave stance about those pesky Jews.

Me? I would feel like maybe I wasn't wanted, like maybe I needed to hang out somewhere else.

But, if the majority of Jews are okay with that treatment, then God Bless Them: they know better than me. I realize now that my understanding was wrong, and that this is all good-natured ribbing among friends and compatriots.

Democrats have an ongoing problem here. Omar is just getting warmed up and will not be quiet. She truly represents her constituents. J. Farmer म्हणाले...

Anti-semitism is a word, like racism, we should attempt to restrict from our vocabulary. It far too often tends to obscure more than it enlightens. Because like racism, anti-semitism has been stretched to basically mean "any criticism of Jews as a group." As Steve Sailer puts it, political correctness is a war on noticing. And yet, people notice that Jews do indeed dominate (in far excess of their proportion to the population) positions of power and influence (e.g. media, popular culture). They do disproportionately go into fields like law and finance. They do dominate in Nobel Prizes. They do practice a high degree of ethnic nepotism. There is nothing inherently wrong with noticing any of these phenomena and discussing the historical, cultural, and biological factors that explain them. You can also acknowledge all of this without having to resort to fringe ZOG/world government/Protocols of the Elders of Zion conspiracy claptrap popular among the Stormfront set and on the edges of the alt-right.

And they seem unwilling to kowtow to the grand old fossils like Pelosi and Schumer. Would they settle for a character Biden as their candidate, an old white dude? Would they be willing to admit that some of their positions won't play well to the middle American voter? Do they want to beat Trump enough that they're willing to compromise? My guess is no.

“The updated resolution does make a more forceful statement against anti-Semitic tropes, with the second clause of the resolution using the verb “condemns” instead of “rejects” as in the draft.

But that clause also replaces anti-Semitism with “anti-Semitic acts and statements” — language designed to make clear that Democrats don’t actually believe Omar is anti-Semitic.

The updated resolution adds seven additional clauses in the “resolved” portion of the resolution. One “condemns anti-Muslim discrimination and bigotry” — language that seemingly defends Omar, who upon her swearing in this year became one of the first two Muslim women to serve in Congress.

Omar frequently deals with Islamophobia, such as a recent incident in West Virginia where protesters used images trying to tie her to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. She has received threats that her some of her colleagues worry will only increase because of the media attention over this resolution.

The last clause of the resolution “encourages all public officials to confront the reality of anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, racism, and other forms of bigotry, as well as historical struggles against them.””

I agree that Duke has never been a significant force in the GOP and has mostly been used as a cudgel by the ethnic activism wing of the Establishment, but party affiliations is not always a proxy for one's political orientation. Larry McDonald, the Congressman from Georgia, had been a member of the Democratic Party his entire life, but it would be daft to describe him as on "the left." “We Stand with Ilhan

We are Jews who stand with Representative Ilhan Omar. She has been falsely accused of anti-Semitism since tweeting that GOP threats against her and Representative Rashida Tlaib for criticizing Israel were “all about the Benjamins baby.” When asked to clarify who is paying members of Congress “to be pro-Israel,” Omar replied, “AIPAC!”

There is absolutely nothing anti-Semitic about calling out the noxious role of AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee), which spends millions each year to buy U.S. political support for Israeli aggression and militarism against the Palestinian people. As the NYC chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace summed up: “Accurately describing how the Israel lobby works in this country is not anti-Semitic. The never-ending smear campaign against Ilhan Omar is racism and Islamophobia in action.”

There is no denying that money rules U.S. politics, and that powerful lobbies from the NRA to the fossil fuel lobby to AIPAC play destructive, anti-democratic roles in our political system, wielding money for legislative influence. The pro-Israel lobby has played an outsized role in producing nearly unanimous congressional support for Israel. It has organized a national campaign to suppress Palestinian activism on campuses, made the Israel Anti-Boycott Act a legislative priority, and for decades has boasted about their power to make or break political careers. To point out this reality is not anti-Semitic.

Genuine anti-Semitism and the growth of white supremacy are indeed growing concerns in Donald Trump’s America. Omar and Tlaib, the first two Muslim congresswomen in this country’s history, are not part of this ugly growth of white supremacy. Instead, they are part of movements which seek to confront it. For that, and for their courageous support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, they are being smeared by a racist and Islamophobic chorus, including the House Democratic leadership itself.

As long as the Israeli state continues to militarily besiege, economically choke, and incessantly dispossess the Palestinian people, and as long as it does so with the full backing of the United States government, we need to speak out against these crimes. We thank Ilhan Omar for having the bravery to shake up the congressional taboo against criticizing Israel. As Jews with a long tradition of social justice and anti-racism, AIPAC does not represent us. #WeStandWithIlhan”

**************************************

Agree, Rob?

Inga...Allie Oop म्हणाले...

“The asymmetry of anti-Semitism, and the problem with the House resolution
Last weekend, as the outrage surrounding Omar’s comments grew, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) tweeted something equally, if not more, offensive. He blasted Jewish Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) for jumping “to Tom $teyer’s conclusion” — a reference to major Democratic donor Tom Steyer, who has a Jewish father. In essence, he implied that a Jewish rep is doing the bidding of Jewish money — a suggestion that Nadler blasted as “inane and anti-Semitic.”

Yet Jordan’s comments haven’t driven the national news cycle, or caused the House majority to write up resolutions condemning him. He just sort of skated by, part of a broader problem of Republican impunity for using anti-Semitic stereotypes. Indeed, one of the key differences between the United States and Britain is that in the US, anti-Semitic tropes are far more common on the right than the left.

Take House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who attacked Omar and Tlaib even before the latest rounds of controversy began. Last summer, McCarthy posted a tweet accusing three Steyer and two other Democratic billionaires of Jewish descent — George Soros and Michael Bloomberg — of trying to buy the midterm election.”

Do you support the goal of Hamas and the Palestinians, which is to erase Israel from the map and to murder all the Jews that live there? Is opposing this goal of Hamas and Palestine Islamaphobia? Should people be allowed to criticize and stand with Israel or is that bad?

Its not. Money matters.
Its how the Democrats turned out the vote in 2018 of course, but -
Its also the financing of the vast range of political institutions and organizations that effectively provide a host of people as permanent campaign staff on retainer.
And then there is the very expensive MSM with its constant messaging.
And beyond that, as you note, its how you influence people in government, through control of rewards (jobs and money) and sanctions (no careers, no money). This works on politicians, bureaucrats, and the private sector.

Campaign funding is just the tip of the iceberg.

“Oh fer fuck's sake: supporting another country is not the same as allegedly having dual/conflicted loyalties toward it and the US.”

Indeed, true. Now tell me how you or Meade can read people minds and determine who is sufficiently loyal to America? If one doesn’t wear a MAGA hat, is that a dead giveaway?

Just because one supports another country or is proud of their heritage does NOT make them less American.

Actually, that's exactly what it does.

As I stated before, if you run around claiming your X-American - instead of just plain, ol' American - don't get all pissed off when people question your loyalties.
