I put on the a freewheel and chain, completing the bicycle power train replacement.

Old chainwheel
https://www.flickr.com/photos/rhhardin/47474641531/sizes/o

The teeth on the outer and middle (most used) chainrings are worn down enough to make a worn chain jump off under power. The inner chainring isn't worn much so prepresents what all the teeth once looked like. Aluminum chainrings wear much more uniformly but these are steel.

The old freewheel came off easily owing to silicone grease when it was put on, and using a fixed vise to hold the freewheel splined insert while the wheel was unscrewed from it, lots of leverage. The days of pounding on wrenches are over.

I took the opportunity to silicone grease the exposed bearings under the freewheel as well.

So it's set for another year.

rhhardin: I used a "chain whip" tool to take the freewheel off the hub of my bike back in those days. No sweat, but it is a single purpose tool. (Want to buy it? I no longer have the bike.) The rule then was that if you could pull the chain off the chainring enough to see a half inch or so of daylight, one or the other was worn out.

Basically I replaced chains every year and chainrings maybe after 10K miles or so.
You appear to be much more thrifty, perhaps to excess.

Can you get that spray-on dry lube that turns into wax where you live? That's good stuff. WD-40 is useless. Dry lube is the bomb.

You either ride a lot, or don't lubricate enough, or both, judging from that chainwheel. You don't need to work so hard to get the exercise, you know.

I'm wondering if anybody has used one of those new electric bicycles in a city or on a mountain road? They'll never replace cars for travel or getting out to the country but there's in-town stuff I do, grocery shopping, going to the nearby mall where I can't honestly say that I need a car except in winter. I might pedal a bicycle loaded with groceries or packages if there was a battery assist. Or maybe not.

Baker Testimony Reveals Concerns About FBI Probe, Pre-Election Contacts With Mother Jones Reporter
BY JEFF CARLSON

[James Baker, the General Counsel of the FBI, received a copy of the Steele Dossier from David Corn shortly after Corn's “A Veteran Spy Has Given the FBI Information Alleging a Russian Operation to Cultivate Donald Trump.” was published in Mother Jones on Oct. 31, 2016...just before the election on November 8.]

'...Baker said that Corn was a “longtime friend,” noting that they met “Years and years and years ago … Our kids carpooled together. We carpooled with them when our kids were little.” According to Baker, he and Corn would speak every few months or so—including during the months preceding the 2016 election.'

Ends with:

'...David Corn, along with Michael Isikoff, is the author of the book, “Russian Roulette: The Inside Story of Putin’s War on America and the Election of Donald Trump.” The two men, who had both promoted allegations that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia, were interviewed on MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes on March 25, after Mueller had officially determined there was no collusion.

In the interview, Corn continued to push allegations against Trump, noting that, “there were certainly acts of betrayal, I think, on the part of the Trump campaign but those might not have been criminal.”

Corn referenced several events, including the Trump Tower meeting, Paul Manafort’s meeting with his employee Konstantin Kilimnik, and the Trump Tower project in Moscow, telling Hayes, “all those things add up to, I think, the biggest scandal in American political history without there having to be any direct coordination.”

Isikoff remained more measured in his responses and countered Corn, by noting, “I agree with everything David said, except that the dossier did set expectations and it did shape what people were looking for, what they thought might have happened. It was endorsed multiple times on this network—people saying it’s more and more proving to be true. And it wasn’t.”

Isikoff concluded by saying, “one of the reasons people were so surprised by the Mueller finding is that it undercuts almost everything that was in the dossier, which postulated a well-developed conspiracy between the Russians and the Trump campaign.”'

Andrew McCarthy has two great essays up today:

The first at NR is On Obstruction, Robert Mueller Abdicates. In it, McCarthy makes the excellent point that if Robert Mueller was just going to pass the buck back to the DoJ, then the rationale for even having a special counsel in the first place was totally obliterated- a point McCarthy has made repeatedly for 2 years- that the appointment itself was improper right from the start, and is only more clear today given that the crime being alleged was never substantiated at all, as is clear in Mueller's findings, or lack thereof, regarding the collusion.

The second is at FoxNews is titled How long has Mueller known there was no Trump-Russia collusion?. In it, McCarthy asks an important question- when did Mueller finally realize "there was no there there"- something Strzok was aware of in May of 2017 himself. McCarthy makes the excellent point that Mueller had to know in September of 2017 when he allowed the Carter Page warrant to expire unrenewed. McCarthy critiques this because he thinks Mueller owed it to the country to give an update in this regard. This is debatable, I think, but my stance depends on what Mueller has actually done the last 18 months of his investigation. If it was nothing but obstruction, then Mueller has done the country a disservice by taking so long- if he was still looking for collusion in other avenues, then I am ok with the report being filed this week.

I watched the statement that Smollett delivered. He was poised and dignified. There was an air of injured innocence about him but withal a sense that he had the courage to endure the base slanders that have been leveled against him. It was a boffo performance. There can be no doubt in anyone's mind that he's a great actor. He brings credibility and affect to the most ridiculous lines. Let's hope he's given an expanded role on that tv show he's on. I'd like to see him play the young Jesse Jackson in a big budget biopic. It's a role he was born to play.

The moderation isn't working. The point of a café is to have a conversation. A conversation with yourself is either pointless or a process toward madness. If there were moderators (PLURAL!) who could be on hand whenever the commentators are commenting, it might work. However, there aren't enough hours in the day for Althouse and Meade to do the needed work effectively.

As it is now, the Althouse café is like one of those absurd doodads* Carl Sagan talked NASA into wasting money, time, and reaction mass on — thoughts launched into the vasty aether with little hope of a thought in reply.

*Specifically, golden plaques attached to Pioneers 10 and 11 showing the winners of the Mister and Miss Nude Generic Nonracial Earthling pageant of 1972. (Mister Nude GNE was also named Mister Congeniality in the 1972 My Hand is Bigger than My Head contest.) Then there are the gold-plated LP of Kurt Waldheim's Greatest Hits in Glorious Monophonic Sound! (aliens may have but one ear, y'know) that hitched rides on Voyagers 1 and 2. In 2 million years Aldebaranite slugoids may take an uncomprehending gander at Sagan's Folly to wonder how beings from such a cold, low-gravity world enjoy living. But be of good cheer! Long, long before that (in 42,000 AD) we'll get our one-way message through to the Giant Hand Lords of Camelopardalis. Unfortunately, they'll be head-scratching (with a giant hand that doesn't take long) over Waldheim's mispronounced English (Zork, did that earthling just say "hello!" or "death to Camelopardalis"?) and won't see evidence of our anatomical kinship.

I shouldn't say "expunge his record"; what I was trying to say is that in exchange for a fine and community service the prosecutors dropped all the charges which is like expunging your record when you turn 18. Because what was the fine and community service for, if there were no charges? Who actually got the ten thousand dollars? Is it common to assess a fine and community service and yet withdraw all charges of any sort? Isn't it more usual that the charges are lowered to some single misdemeanor which is of level which commensurate with community service and a fine?

I don’t see the Mueller investigation being able to maintain the Carter Page FISA warrant. Not that connected temporally. Mueller was looking at events running from spring through fall of 2016, and the FISA warrant would have been looking at events a year later. Besides, FISA only applies to counterintelligence and counter terrorism, while an independent counsel was supposed to investigate crimes, and FISA has an approval process that requires signing by AG/DAG and FBI Dir/DD. Otherwise I agree about the timing.

Interesting fight gong on right now. Nunes is pushing criminal referrals for the FISAgate scandal. Graham is pushing hard for an independent counsel. Trump is apparently their target, and not Barr. Trump appears to be committed to doing something, but that might change. Since the trail seems to lead back to the Obama White House, and includes the CIA, my vote would be with Sen Graham for a special counsel.

This whole Russian thing has been like Dreyfus case. High up people started a lie (an accusation of spying made by anti-semites against a Jew) and the lie damaged the life of an innocent man. Then supporters of this innocent man worked to expose the lie; and exposing the lie revealed a network of corruption. Similarly Trump, by holding out, has exposed a network of corruption of another kind. It is the globalist corruption of the democratic process. In a new age, you get new threats which a citizen has to understand and this Russian thing has laid out how globalists corrupt the system. Avoiding mass citizen round-ups while changing education and the news into propaganda is central. But there's also a strange sort of Moebius strip effect in the propaganda which is new. In this kind of Moebius propaganda beating up people on the street (by Antifa leftys) is justified as preventing the beating up of people on the street. Abandoning objectivity is justified as becoming objective in that you only tell the truth. Refusing to listen or answer arguments, as on climate change, is being open. It's love to hate Christians.

The above item about "simulation world" reminded me of something else that seems insane. My understanding is that Boeing engineers are working around the clock to get the 737 MAX autopilot software "patch" qualified by next Friday.

If so, this is madness.

What should be done, in my view (and I never even worked in the aerospace industry) is that it should be tested in simulators by at least two independent teams in addition to the Boeing developers. Then, they should fly it in in real 737 MAX aircraft (flight crew only on board) for a couple of weeks in a variety of conditions. To find out, you know, if it actually works in the real world.

Only then should it be turned loose on the public. We don't need a replay of the 1986 Challenger disaster, where safety was sacrificed under schedule pressure.

Since the trail seems to lead back to the Obama White House, and includes the CIA, my vote would be with Sen Graham for a special counsel.

There is interesting speculation this morning that the original target was Flynn.

Michael Ledeen is pushing this.

I think it began on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, when Flynn changed the way we did intelligence against the likes of Zarqawi, bin Laden, the Taliban, and their allies.

General Flynn saw that our battlefield intelligence was too slow. We collected information from the Middle East and sent it back to Washington, where men with stars on their shoulders and others at the civilian intel agencies chewed it over, decided what to do, and sent instructions back to the war zone. By the time all that happened, the battlefield had changed. Flynn short-circuited this cumbersome bureaucratic procedure and moved the whole enterprise to the war itself. The new methods were light years faster. Intel went to local analysts, new actions were ordered from men on the battlefield (Flynn famously didn’t care about rank or status) and the war shifted in our favor.

This reminiscent of Joe Rochefort in WWII where the Redman brothers in Washington missed all the real intel but won the war against Rochefort, even though he was the one who got the intel on Midway,
