It was 10 years ago today...

... on a Friday the 13th: "If you're going to take any risks, I hope it's worth it for you."

With perspective: Yeah, it was!

Same.

David Begley म्हणाले...

How sweet.

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

What's happening with the "Bonfire of the Vanities" book club?

I've been re-reading.

First comment. It was written before cell phones took off. The hero heads down to the street in the rain to make a public pay phone call to his mistress.

How are people under 25 years old supposed to understand?

Sharc 65 म्हणाले...

Just a heads up: Althouse + Meade isn't working. Relax, I mean the tag link.

Meade म्हणाले...

Sorry, Shouty, this is the thread about love, it is not a book club thread. Go to the cafe post if you want to hand in your book report. Not that she wants anyone's book report. Show some respect. She's not your high school english teacher you wish you had but didn't. Think Gatsby project. Also, love.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"Just a heads up: Althouse + Meade isn't working. Relax, I mean the tag link."

Why would that happen? Other tags are working.

The Althouse + Meade tag in the linked-to post also won't work!

Eerie!

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

Gatsby died of love. Or pool-swimming.

Sharc 65 म्हणाले...

Well, I made an effort to re-explore it, as my memory is kind of dim. I was a new lurker back then, not an old lurker like I am now. Is it really 10 years since the romantic Colorado excursion then? Or a different anniversary? Either way, congrats!

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

There are more than 600 posts with that tag.

It shows up in my list of tags. I can get all the posts with that tag on a list, but when you click on it, you get the news that there are no posts with this tag.

I've never seen this problem before.

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

The enormous power you now wield, Meade, is going to your head.

I wasn't hot for the high school teacher. I graduated a year early. I was dying out there in the cornfields and had to get out.

Howard म्हणाले...

Wrong again Shouting Thomas. Chuck is still with us. Meade is shooting blanks, so you don't need to cut and run like you did in '68

Probably because of the + character

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

... so you don't need to cut and run like you did in '68...

The fictional character you've devised for me is quite entertaining.

You're sure you're not Ritmo? This is one of Ritmo's strategies.

Howard म्हणाले...

Did you even make it to the Group W bench Thomas?

Meade म्हणाले...

Hahaha. And stop disrespecting corn. The enormous power I wield comes directly from corn. Popcorn.

Meade म्हणाले...

Alas, the Chucks will always be with us.

Ralph L म्हणाले...

It was 20 years ago today, Sgt Pepper taught us how to play halfway.

I don't remember the spaces.

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

Did you even make it to the Group W bench Thomas?

What an odd obsession.

Do you have an endgame in mind?

Howard म्हणाले...

We all thought it was your talent at corn hole.

Ralph L म्हणाले...

You've let %20 come between you.

Howard म्हणाले...

Endgame, to god-damned hell with endgames! We have no endgame. In fact, we don't need endgames. I don't have to show you any stinking endgames, you god-damned cabrón and chinga tu madre!

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

We all thought it was your talent at corn hole.

Another Ritmo similarity.

Have you noticed? When Ritmo isn't bitching out somebody for their homophobia, he's lecturing somebody about what a sissy he is for taking it up the ass.

Howard म्हणाले...

So many holes to choose from and Stinky likes it in the butt, Bob.

Bruce Hayden म्हणाले...

It was interesting scanning through the comments there. A lot of names I recognize, but haven’t seen for awhile.

I have always bern partial to Friday the 13th, having been born on one. My memory is that one of the sources of the unluckyness was that it was on a Friday the 13th that the King of France, after having bribed the Vatican, started its attack on the Knights Templer for their many assets.

Meade म्हणाले...

Now now. Love, people, l-o-v-e LOVE.

Now, I want you 2, Howard and Shouty, to kiss and make up.

Meade म्हणाले...

Don't make me wield my enormous power.

Howard म्हणाले...

I'm sure there's a porn channel you can find for that fetish, Meade.

Howard म्हणाले...

... from Howie with love

Meade म्हणाले...

that's better.

I have always been rather partial to Friday the 13th, having been born on one some 643 years to the day after the Knights Templar were disbanded by force.

Your spelling has declined.

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

Butt love is real love, Howard.

Pounding the fudge is the purest expression of love.

If our boys had been pounding the fudge in '68, peace and love would have won the day.

All you need is butt love.

Meade म्हणाले...

Better. But do I still detect a hint of hostility, Shouty? (I do like the way you ended that last comment with the word "love." Step in the right direction!)

First Tenor म्हणाले...

This makes me happy

Linda म्हणाले...

Congratulations - enjoy the day! Maybe do something that doesn’t involve shoveling snow!

Amadeus 48 म्हणाले...

Hey, the Althouse/Meade story is one of the most romantic real life things I’ve ever seen. I mean, who ever meets someone that way, and then gets married, and IT WORKS. It’s like something in a novel (Jane Auten, not Scott Fitzgerald).

Meade, you are one of my heroes. And Althouse, you are another.

May you have many more happy years together.

Amadeus 48 म्हणाले...

Austen, not Auten. Sheesh.

Leland म्हणाले...

Congratulations. I met my wife on a Friday the 13th, 21 years ago. The best rewards comes from taking risks.

Ralph L म्हणाले...

It's safe for rhhardin to write the romcom screenplay now.

Phil 314 म्हणाले...

Reading the comments from that earlier post indicates that while the star has stayed the same, the supporting cast has gone through a wholesale change. Another day, another episode at the Althouse.

PJ57 म्हणाले...

On a less snarky note, congratulations Lovebirds. Marriage at any age is a challenging proposition. When it is entered into at an older age, one brings more perspective but also more settled (and unsettling) habits. I'm glad yours seems to be working and I wish you love, contentment and a long life. And since Ann has seen Meade since the cataract surgery, he must have been satisfactory even without the milky penumbra.

Wince म्हणाले...

"It was 10 years ago today" and, what, $12 trillion of national debt?

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

Happy anniversary?

Char Char Binks, Esq. म्हणाले...

Gatsby died from pool-place violence.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

A lot of names I recognize, but haven’t seen for awhile.

I miss the wit of Bissage.

Congrats Althouse + Meade. Even though the tag doesn't work.

Acktshully you're indulging in faulty reasoning driven by the error/cognitive fault of survivorship bias. You can't retroactively look only at the "winners" and decide that the risk was well-priced or "worth it" at the time.

But no, seriously, good for you!

Thanks. I had to check which pearl you were referring to.
That Lifetime movie would be...interesting.

I love Althouse+Meade posts. I met my husband online in January of 2009, and we also married in August, so I feel a certain kinship. When I tell my children this, I emphasize that January to August is very, very fast, but that we actually did know each other well and talked frankly about all the things that we needed to talk about beforehand. (Well, we talked about all the things we THOUGHT we needed to talk about. In all marriages there are a few surprises, but we’ve worked them out successfully along the way. You can’t avoid taking a little risk in these things.)

It’s been a great 10 years! We’re starting to plan our 10th anniversary trip. The main draw will be leaving the 4 kids with the grandparents for three or four or even five days. The prospect of a few days of not buckling anybody into a car seat or cutting anybody else’s food or supervising chores makes me downright giddy.

And we never would have met without the internet. I used to be a little embarrassed to explain how we met, but it seems that’s what everybody is doing now.

Friday the 13th instead of Valentines Day. Nice touch.

PM म्हणाले...

My daughter was born on a Friday the 13th under a full moon - the last time those two things occurred together in the 20th Century. A lucky day, to me.

Awww sweet. Happiness all around.

I met my wife online way back in the last century, before it was cool. Fate has a way of working its will no matter what the medium. Congrates folks.

I think you meant "Congrats." Congrates is what you say when it doesn't work out.

Hey, in ten years Sgt. Pepper will teach you to play. Or something.

Mazel tov, you crazy kids!
