"If ever wearing blackface, even in the 1980s as both Northam and Herring did, is a career-ender, and if we are supposed to 'believe all women,' then all three of these Democrats have to go."

"Only Northam has been thrown overboard by the party, with Fairfax and Herring getting passes so far because Democrats don’t want to nuke the entirety of a state executive branch they control. Regardless, Virginia is an indication of an inflamed and unforgiving Democratic mood that will define the party’s battle for the 2020 presidential nomination. Democrats are about to embark on the first woke primary, a gantlet of political correctness that will routinely wring abject apologies out of candidates and find fault in even the most sure-footed. The passage of time will be no defense. Nor the best of intentions. Nor anything else. Any lapses will be interpreted through the most hostile lens, made all the more brutal by the competition of a large field of candidates vying for the approval of a radicalized base. The Democrat nomination battle might as well be fought on the campus of Oberlin College and officiated by the director of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.... No one will be woke enough to emerge from this process unscathed."

From "The Bonfire of the Democrats" by Rich Lowry (the National Review editor) writing at Politico. Go to the link for Lowry's details on the vulnerability of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Tulsi Gabbard, and Kamala Harris.

The Democrats have created a weapon that will be used repeatedly against anyone that rises within their ranks, and they didn't even keep Brett Kavanaugh off the Court. What a disaster!

It's the ultimate in Alinsky's rule #4 — "Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules." Looking for a place for the precise text of the rule, I happened upon "Who is Saul Alinsky, and why does the right hate him so much?" That's from July 2016. Hate?!

By the way... Ridicule is man's most potent weapon (Rule #5).

ADDED: The Editorial Board of The Washington Post, last night, dug in, "Ralph Northam must resign." But what about Fairfax and Herring? The allegations against Fairfax and Herring are not "relevant" to the question whether Northam can continue as an "effective governor."
It’s reasonable to guess that other revelations elsewhere, about other public figures with their own histories or photos of offensive, insensitive or racist conduct, may surface in coming days. Each should be judged on its own set of circumstances. In the case of Mr. Northam, the circumstances are decisive; what’s done cannot be undone. He must go.
Judge each person as an individual. Good idea. But you're also going to have to treat like cases alike. So if you don't want to throw out everyone who did nothing worse that darken his face to go to a costume party in the guise of a pop star he loved, then you have to stop yourself as you make that individual judgment against Northam, or you're setting up all the future cases to hinge on the argument that what this individual did was at least as bad as what Northam did. And I think the real reason the WaPo editors are against Northam is not that they want the wearing of a Michael Jackson costume to deserve the new political death penalty. It's that so many prominent Democrats put their reputations on the line demanding that Northam resign, and the editors don't want to leave them exposed.

But they are all exposed.

The Senators hold no sway over Virginia.

Booker has beclowned himself the most with refusing to address the sexual accusation against Lt. Gov Fairfax.

All The Senators who called for Northam to resign over Blackface need to address Fairfax. If Northam resigns the Fairfax becomes governor.

Fairfax has been accused of a serious crime. The Senators all voted against Kavanaugh and believed his accuser about an alleged incident from when Kavanaugh was allegedly 17.

Like Kavanaugh, Fairfax accuser is a college professor. She waited 13 years before telling anyone while Ford waited 30 years.

The Senators are scurrying.

I think the Clintons are behind this. At least Bill Clinton is. These were professional moves executed perfectly.

mccullough म्हणाले...

Amexpat म्हणाले...

Only Northam has been thrown overboard by the party, with Fairfax and Herring getting passes so far because Democrats don’t want to nuke the entirety of a state executive branch they control.

The three cases are different. Fairfax has denied the allegations and there haven't been any other women coming forward with similar claims. If there are further claims that have some credibility, he'll be finished.

Herring did his blackface in undergrad school and can be seen as a misguided homage to a rapper that he liked and wanted to emulate.

Northam problems are more serious. Foremost is the conflicting information he gave, first taking responsibility for the photo on his yearbook page and then later denying it was him. There's also a difference a photo of a guy in blackface standing next to someone in a KKK uniform and doing blackface in a talent show. As mentioned, the later can be viewed as a misguided homage to an entertainer you admire while the former has no reasonable explanation. If there were exculpatory context, he should have provided it.

He also comes across as a complete doofus. I watched the second press conference. When a reporter asked if he could still do the moonwalk, he started looking around for space to do it. He had to be stopped by his wife who said it's not appropriate.

Like most politicians he's more concerned with his career and image than doing what's best for the public. He stated as much by saying if he resigned now people would think he's a racist. That's not a reason to stay. A valid reason to stay would be that he still thinks he can do a good job, which it is obvious he can't.

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves म्हणाले...

I'd suggest a sexual abuse charge is WAY worse than a bad costume from the 1980s.

John henry म्हणाले...

A bit off topic maybe but I am currently reading "The Brass Check" by Upton Sinclair. Free at Amazon.

According the Wikipedia, Upton Sinclair does to the newspaper industry what he did to the meat packing industry with "The Jungle". Wikipedia also says that the book resulted in the adoption of a code of ethics for the newspaper industry and reporters.

The book could have been written in 2019 instead of 1919. Nothing has changed.

Lots of talk about fighting for "Social Justice" since Sinclair pretty explicitly considered himself a social justice warrior. Sadly, he doesn't use warrior though he does talk repeatedly about "fighting" for "social justice" as a socialist.

His biggest complaint is fake news, and he has lots of stories about fake news stories that he figured in. He got a lot of press in his day as a famous author and famous socialist.

The book takes rather a "poor me" attitude "Nobody would publish my poetry for the silly reason that nobody would buy it" (quote approximate), not being able to get newspapers to publish articles, newspapers being in thrall to advertiser instead of publishing people who could improve the world. (like himself)He is also rather full of himself.

But it is still a fun read. Sinclair is a pretty good writer.

He was the author of the novel Oil, also, for those who have seen the movie version There will be Blood. Both book and movie are pretty good.

Fairfax is also accused of referring to Dr. Tyson as a “bitch” a few days ago. This, by The Senators standards, is irrefutable evidence of misogyny (except when Schumer calls a flight attendant a bitch).

There is now way out for The Senators.

They must all drop out of the Dem primary and resign their senate seats in disgrace. They have failed.

I've seen old movies that had it, but I never thought it was particularly funny, or otherwise entertaining. I was never impressed by Asa Yoelson's acting, dancing, or singing. There were plenty of other show biz folks who did it, including Blacks, but I never understood the appeal.

Blackface isn't something I ever had the urge to try myself, but what harm does it do, other than to the dignity of the wearer? Who is harmed, and how? I'd like an honest answer, preferably from a black person, about how exactly he is hurt by blackface. I'll wait as long as it takes.

Still, with Dems getting a taste of their own medicine the schadenfreude is irresistible.

Why won't Democrats do the same? Do they embrace racism that much?

And Northam doesn't just have the one picture, oh no. He had the kerfuffle where his campaign posters left off Fairfax, who is black. And he's on video as refusing to shake a black opponent's hand after a debate or something.

Racism runs deep, apparently, within his core.

In 1983 I wouldn't think that blackface was racist unless it was intended to mock blacks in general. Halloween costumes both deride and honor depending. My daughter once went as Freddy Mercury, it was intended to honor his memory. People who dressed as Nixon, for example, not so much.

What this is about is taking a political weapon, ridicule, off the table when used against any black person. Trump can be an orangutan, Bush a chimpanzee, but Obama must remain sacred. Because of our decidedly racist history, we can't even point out that he was non too bright.

We have learned to love Alinsky, and this fight is on his battlefield as he defined it. Democrats thought they owned him is all.

Maybe Herring was a huge fan of white nerd band They Might be Giants who threw a shout-out to Kurtis Blow in their 1988 song Where Your Eyes Don't Go

OK, so he time-traveled AND wore blackface. How interesting. Yes he's a racist. Wearing the highly offensive blackface has been wrong in polite society since the 1960s, and anyone, especially any WHITE man in 1980 knew that the act would be offensive to black people and just didn't care that they were being racist. You should know Howard. Your side claims Trump is racist because his father signed a consent decree in the 1970s, and because he said there were "some good people on both sides" in Charlottesville. So yeah, according to your side's metrics Northam is a flaming hair-on-fire KKK-verified racist for wearing blackface and for putting pictures of hooded Klansman on his page.

There was time when the standards of being able to perform the duties of an office only pertained directly to performing day to day duties of the office. Of course, in comparing candidates, other items come into play, such as character. It is reasonable to argue that certain character traits speak to the ability to perform duties like "leading all people, not just those of a certain race". And so set the standard of accessing political officers prior to Kavanaugh.

With Kavanaugh, the standard became any behavior that one might even be accused of having, ever in their life, can disqualify a person from performing the duties of an office. Technically, that standard was pushed back Conservatives to "credibly accused" with a preference to push to an extreme right ideal of "innocent until proven guilty". Alas, the moderate progressives on the left want to use "believe the accuser" with a more extremist vein saying "believe the accuser from whenever the choose to make an accusation from any time in the past". So that's the standard being applied in Virginia.

In the case of the Governor, there is a bit more proof of guilt. For the Lt. Gov, even if the accuser is lying, his response to the accuser shows poor character. For the AG; he accused and then recused himself.

For Texans watching from afar; the popcorn is fattening. But it is hard to avoid this schadenfreude feast laid out before us. I would gladly give up the entire feast for a return to "innocent until proven guilty", but then I guess that labels me as a right wing extremist.

We warned them that this would eventually backfire and turn on them, but that is little consolation over this cancer on our culture and politics. Reason has been completely replaced with feelings and automatic conditioned response to stimuli.

So nobody but a Black can now play a Black character in any situation? Can a light-skinned Black wear blackface to play a dark-skinned Black? Can an Asian, an Indian, or an Eskimo? People have different skin tones. Get over it. Just because somebody did it in a way designed to be offensive does not make every such use forever also offensive.

I don't really believe most Blacks are offended by this. Most Blacks are just as capable of finding humor, nuance, utility, and reasonableness in such a thing as any other people. I would not be offended if my characteristics were copied by someone without them, even to make fun of me or my kind. That's what freedom and tolerance costs us as mature reasoning people. Is wearing a fat suit unacceptable when a thin person wants to play a fat one? How about hair color, or accents? It's unworkable to have these these things be taboo, and I believe it's fake outrage. Of course some people can be outraged about anything, but should the weakest and most unreasonable among us make the rules? Is that the world we want - that drab, stilted, scared, and timid world?

The Inquisition was in truth a remarkable exercise in institutional self-control and due process, especially for the time. Prosecutions could take a decade before judgements were imposed. There were appeals. There were no grand passionate slaughters, or railroading of witches, Jews or Catholic (Protestants) into overnight executions by the civil authorities. The simple comparative body counts in all cases should suffice to make the value of the Inquisition clear.

You are being a bit tongue and cheek and snarky.

But you are not far off.

It's the "itself" part that is at issue.

What has been exposed is that the NeverTrumpers never really were conservatives. It has all been a game.

Dems win and dems get their policy preferences.

Republicans win and we get....Failure Theatre.

The NeverTrumpers were never republicans. They were rent-seekers and court jesters dancing at the self-anointed's commands. They simply wanted a seat at the table and they didn't care who's boot that kicks them they had to lick.

Trump has exposed all of that. The charade is over. The clear policy, tactics and full narrative alignment between the NeverTrumpers/LLR's/Dems/Left has been laid bare.

And that little humpty dumpty can never be put back again.

Which is why the NeverTrumpers are fighting so hard to elect democrats across the board: in the feeble hope that once the dems are back in power and the Leftist Project to Transform America Into Something Hellish is back on track, that the left will "forgive" these li'l NeverTrumpers/LLR's for some minor past transgressions (like identifying as republicans), pat them on the head, and toss them some scraps.

As a further footnote to buwaya's comment above, I should like to take note of the fact that when Napoleon invaded Spain he abolished the Spanish Inquisition. Well and good. What could be worse than the Spanish Inquisition? Occupaion of your country by French forces for one thing. Napoleon's armies were the original social justice warriors. They confiscated the crops, raped the women, and devised inventive forms of torture to inflict on the partisans or men who looked like partisans. Over several centuries, the Spanish Inquisition killed about five thousand people. That was a slow afternoon for Napoleon.....Here's an interesting statistic I recently read: Napoleon during the course of his wars caused 30% of the male population of France to become killed or crippled.

However, I do believe that it is Northam's personal best interest to NOT resign.

Alinsky's model is very much like that of Satan [Lucifer]. C.S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters is a good read.

It’s actually on my reading list, which is unfortunately very long (and I read very slow). I used to have a very visceral reaction against Lewis because I assosiated his work with a person I didn’t like. But lately I’ve read certain quotes and things the piqued my interest. So I want to give his work a shot, and your recomendation sounds like a good place to start.

If they were Republican, they would be forced out.

How, if Northam was a Republican, could he be forced out?

That's where the real Northam frustration comes from on the left. You can't force him out. You have to convince him to resign.

Why I tend to believe Tyson:
1: There was no point in her going to the police in 2004. She had no meaningful proof, and at the Boston 2004 DNC there were probably 1000 incidents of two people meeting at the DNC and engaging in oral sex, or more, with each other
2: Fairfax claims that he and Tyson continued to interact for a while, but he didn't want more, so she went off in a huff,
Tyson claims she never talked to him again.
At least one of them is lying. If Fairfax can provide evidence they socially communicated later, then he's clear. If he can't he's guilty. But at least Tyson is claiming she acted reasonably.

Here's why the Democrats are screwed:

1: The entire VA General Assembly is up for election in November of this year.
2: They have two white racists and one black rapist. If they nail the rapist and let the racists slide, they're going to have great difficulty getting black voters to show up for them in November. So either all three go, or all three stay.
3: If all three stay, they are going to have a HORRID time trying to recruit candidates for the November elections. Because anyone who runs on the D ticket is going to have to answer "what should we do about Northam, Fairfax, and Herring?" Since there's no "good" answer (for a Democrat) to that question, they're going to have a hard time finding people willing to walk that gauntlet.
4: Come September, when voters are paying attention, the GOP House (Assembly) and Senate can move forward on impeaching all three. So the Democrats will NOT be able to duck the issue.

Yes, however is Governor when all this is done will be able to veto any redistricting measures that hurt the Dems, so the Dems don't want to give up the seat. But they're still better off dumping all three (with a quiet promise to each "resign or be prosecuted (impeached)"), and trying to win one of the houses in the Nov elections, than they are letting the three hold on.

Greg P: "Here's why the Democrats are screwed:"

I disagree.

Did Castro ever worry about the vote totals in Cuba?

We've got "ballot harvesting" now with the dems controlling all the major enforcement offices in VA.

The left is never going to let VA go back to even "reddish".

Just wait until 2020 when we see 17,948% turnout in Milwaukee, Detroit and Philadelphia precincts with the vote totals going for the dems at just about 100%.

"The only way this will stop, is when enough Democrats and MSM favorites go down. Then they'll re-think it. Not before."

I think this is correct.

I would add, we need to stop using only THEIR definitions of "racism." Their definition is rigged to help one party - Dems, whose base will tell you that only white citizens (Republicans, largely) can be racist. This is a claim most Americans, of all colors, do not agree with.

The party of Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan has a problem with race.

If you think about it, the conservatives are following the classic tit-for-tat strategy. It's a two sided equation (let-let-our-guys-go and your-guys-are-toast), both aspects are linked.

As long as the democrats do it to republicans and don't do it to democrats, republicans won't do it to Trump and will do it to democrats. The democrats started this long ago with the Hitler, Bush lied-people died nonsense while republicans went along with a forgive and forget approach. Ted Kennedy driving skills, and Bill Clinton's dropped pants finally pushed the republican to play the let-let-our-guys-go democratic half of the equation with Donald Trump. The Kavanaugh debacle finished any tolerance the right had for the "you're condemned, we've forgiven" model played by the democrats.

If the democrats want to escape from the tit-for-tat game, they have to start consistently condemning their sinners and allow a couple of republicans to go free. Until then, there is no incentive for the republicans to drop the retaliation approach.

I'm hoping Senator Warren wins the Dem nomination and taps Governor Northam as her running mate.

Get it?

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

What does one think WaPo or any of the Democratic candidates would have written or said about Northam if Fairfax were a Republican Lt. Governor? Does anyone really believe that they wouldn't have excused Northam's problems and encouraged him to remain governor, and then called for Fairfax to resign? With the Democrats, hypocrisy seems to be a requirement of office.

"double-edged sword"

You can also stab with it.

Being double-edged though doesn't make it turn against you. It just raises scoring possibilities, say an upwards cut under the hand grip of your opponent.

It is a metaphor. Not to be taken literally.

One thing that has always puzzled me about the American Left is why they don't seem to understand that precedents are a double edged sword. This is especially baffling when you think about how many of them have been to law school.

Yeah, the went to "law school" where they "learned" that the US Constitution was a "Living Document", which roughly translates as "there are no precedents. There's simply 'we get our way'".

So, yes, they really are shocked, not just "shocked, shocked!" to see something treated as an actual rule to which they must abide
