The meaning and origin of the expression: Green-eyed monster

.... In Othello, 1604, Shakespeare refers explicitly to the 'green-eyed monster' as jealousy.

Iago:
O, beware, my lord, of jealousy;
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on; that cuckold lives in bliss
Who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger;
But, O, what damned minutes tells he o'er
Who dotes, yet doubts, suspects, yet strongly loves!

RICHMOND, Va. — The political tumult in Virginia widened Thursday as the State Senate’s top Republican faced an onslaught of questions about racist photographs and slurs in a college yearbook that he helped oversee, transforming the Capitol’s nearly week-old crisis into a bipartisan reckoning over personal conduct.

The senator, Thomas K. Norment Jr., who is the majority leader, was the managing editor of the 1968 Virginia Military Institute yearbook, which included slurs and images of students in blackface. Mr. Norment called the use of blackface “abhorrent” while pointing out that he did not take or appear in any of the photographs, and he said he was not surprised that “those wanting to engulf Republican leaders” in the controversies that have rocked Virginia Democrats “would highlight the yearbook from my graduation a half-century ago.”

rat trivia:

>'I Smell a Rat' Origin

For centuries, one way that the word "smell" has been used is to describe a suspicious feeling someone has. Let's look at an example; this one comes from an English poet you may have heard about before, William Shakespeare. In a play called King Lear (which is believed to have been written around the early 17th century), he wrote:

"Do you smell a fault? "

Another example would be a similar expression that goes "something smells fishy." And then of course, there's the phrase, "I smell a rat." They all pretty much mean the same thing: Something feels wrong.

So, how did this idiom originate? Well, it probably has something to do with dead rats.

Yeah, gross, but here's why:

Rats are pretty cool creatures, but when they crawl underneath your house or they find their way into the walls of your home, they become way less cool. Especially if they die in those locations, then they become a problem. A smelly problem.

You see, some home owners have dealt with this issue before. A rat dies somewhere in the house unbeknownst to the owner, and then a few days later, the rat's corpse starts to stink. The home owner begins noticing the strange odor, but they don't entirely know what it is or where the smell is coming from. They just know that something doesn't smell right.

Later, they find the dead rat and realize that the "off smell" was actually coming from a dead rodent. Yes, they were "smelling a rat." Perhaps, then, this stinky situation is how the idiom originated and how it got its meaning of "something doesn't feel/smell right."

This, however, cannot be confirmed for sure. Anyways, with that out of the way, let's talk about how old this phrase is:

It looks as though it goes back to the 18th century. For example, it's said that Patrick Henry, who lived from the years 1736 to 1799, used this saying:

"I smell a rat."<

Yes, they were cloudy with cataracts, but I’ve also been very near-sighted and had astigmatism since I was a child. In the surgery, the natural lens with the cataract is removed and an artificial lens is put in. So the cataract is gone but also you have a prescription lens that can replace the need for glasses.

The clarity is amazing. Not only is the fog gone, but it looks much brighter. The right eye, by contrast, sees everything as if there were a brown-gray pigment washed over it.

D. said:
>'I Smell a Rat' Origin

The “I smell a rat” thing reminds me of the last time I smelled a rat.

Last year sometime a small rat (or maybe a large mouse) crawled into the walls in my basement and died there. I could smell him, but couldn’t locate him.

But a house fly did locate him, and decided to start a family. Soon the basement was filled with a vast swarm of buzzing flies, covering the light fixtures, clinging to the laundry, and filling the air.

It was like a scene from a horror movie. My wife refused to go downstairs. Pretty soon they started finding their way up the stairs into the kitchen and throughout the house. We swatted flies all day but they just kept coming. We blockaded the doors and windows but they still got out.

In the basement, I did battle with them with a Shop Vac in hand, sucking them up by the hundreds off the lights. They eventually started to die from starvation, falling to make a crunchy layer on the concrete floor.

I kept looking for the carcass, but didn’t find it until eventually ripping out the insulation under the kitchen floor. And there, nestled in the pink fiberglass, the delicate white bones lay. The maggots had completely consumed the body otherwise.

The next time I smell a rat, I am going to have nightmares.

(Trump would have said : Sad! - but he is eloquent, and Mrs Warren is not).

I really think though, in Mr Northam's case, that he woke up one morning, realized that he had actually advocated for the murder of little babies, and he thereby was so confused, in his beclouded-by-great-sin perceptions of what is good and bad, that he was not sure if he was rightfully a scapegoat or not. And so he admitted to being either the guy in blackface, laughing, or the guy in the Klu Klux Klan outfit. Even though he knew the next day he would deny it. Poor little loser.

I'm forwarding that perpetual motion suggestion to the Green New Deal folks. I think you have something there that's been overlooked. Another suggestion I'm making is changing the value of pi to a simple straightforward 3.2. This will save a lot of labor in calculations and that'll be important as we rebuild every house in America. We've only got ten years, and this will save enough time to feed 12% of the hungry children America one good nutritious meal of cauliflower once a day by the third year, according my figures. Maybe the cows could be in the basements replacing furnaces as we use their captured methane. That's just off the top of my head, I haven't fully costed it out yet.

And I think we might want a open competition for the best perpetual motion machine, otherwise the government will just go on hiding them all. It gets them all the time from the alien ships and then hides them from us poor saps.

This resulted in shit shooting out of the cows. Much of which was visible as it squirted out onto the exterior sides of the trailer. Presumably he was strategically zapping them in a particular body part so that they lost control of their sphincters.

At first I assumed he was deplorable (FTR, this was way way before HRC used this label for these folks). But, later I thought that this may be a technique that clears the bowels and therefore reduces the possibility of meat contamination at the slaughter plant.

My parents long faced a mouse problem. My youngest brother was living with them, and would live trap them, then releasing them a bit away outside. We joked about his Catch And Release policy. But then, they would die somewhere in the walls. They would usually know though where they were because the cats would try to get in there. Then the smell would start up. Ultimately, he got pretty good at figuring where they were, and ultimately seems to have found all of the holes that they used to get in, and plugged them. Took 30 years, but we think he got them all.

Cops caught Jerome Winslow, accused of brutally beating a UW student in Madison Sunday. He was on probation, and has an extensive criminal record at the tender age of 22, including armed robbery, felony battery to a police officer, and beating and BITING his ex-girlrfriend.

"Two years ago, Winslow was convicted of disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property and battery. He was placed in a diversion program that was revoked after he had contact with law enforcement in the UW-Whitewater case." This was two years BEFORE the armed robbery he committed last year. https://www.dailyunion.com/.../article_168c1fa2-8749-11e7-81b4-47708532ca8f.htm...
