CORRECTION: I had the lyric in the post title miswritten — now corrected — because I'd copied and pasted it from this old post:
"[I]n countries like Germany, Switzerland, China, and Malaysia, smiling faces were rated as significantly more intelligent than non-smiling people."
"But in Japan, India, Iran, South Korea, and... Russia, the smiling faces were considered significantly less intelligent.... In countries such as India, Argentina, and the Maldives, meanwhile, smiling was associated with dishonesty...."
At the link — to "Why Some Cultures Frown on Smiling/Finally, an explanation for Bitchy Resting Face Nation" in The Atlantic — there are some charts arraying the countries from one extreme to the other.
I was explaining this out loud to Meade, and he sang: "If you smile at me, I will understand/'Cause that is something everybody everywhere except India does in the same language...."

A smile without a point makes you look like a moron at best, is the lesson.
It makes it less sinister if you imagine the boy trying to pick up the indian for a tryst.
In the absence of an obvious explanation, mocking the indian does best.
In the end, they're going with social incompetence of the young to account for the smile.
Are you beginning to have second thoughts, prof, about rich white kids nurturing fantasies of oppression over being a woman or being gay?
The fabricated mythology of the persecution of the women and gays is metastasizing into bloodlust.
We're rich and fat almost beyond imagination.
I'm happy. I don't have any bitch. Neither do women and gays. I'd like to hear the same from you, that you have absolutely no complaint. Lead us. Stop telling women that their first goal in life is to be miserable and bitchy. Stop telling gays that they've been subject to some sort of persecution. Be a peace maker.
You are gifted with extraordinary intellect. Use it now to repudiate the bloodlust that this cult of grievance has created.
If he'd carried a map, he could ask the indian for directions. That would make the smmile have a point.
One of the mysteries in the 4th grade band, playing trombone, was the occasional direction "smile." They spelled it simile however. As far as I could tell, it made no difference to the sound.
Simile and the world similes with you. Metaphor and you metaphor alone.
Harmony is so last century.
When taking directions from an indian, you have to watch his eyes.
Teach your children well.
Dog culture sees smiles as aggressive.
Let a smile be your brassiere.
"Let a smile be your umbrella but don't get a mouthful of rain"
Joey Reynolds
"Let a smile be you brassiere"
Rhhardin
And get a mouthful ot teat?
Now that would be something to smile about
Makes me think of the Bellamy Brothers.
Those white male cultural imperialists on that couch assume that everybody everywhere interprets everything just like they do.
I am noticing that The Left has a problem with normal human communication, which requires context to make sense. For example, "the N-word", if uttered by a white person at all is proof of racism, despite its being (1) Part of the name of a published book by a Black man that was being recommended by a teacher, or uttered in a conference call as an example of a bad word that should NOT ever be used against someone. In both cases (which actually occurred), the individual was reported to his superiors and reprimanded or fired, even though the CONTEXT should have made all the difference.
A "smirk" or a forced or confused smile can look identical - the context makes sense of it. In the case of the HS kid, a stranger comes up to his face - clearly seeking his attention and invading his personal space, w/a serious expression on his own face banging a drum. Who is this guy? Is he a psycho? Does he want something? It is a normal reaction to either frown to show confusion or smile to show lack of threat.
Lastly, The Left love using stilted and convoluted language that often strips context from words or imbues them with artificial meaning. Leftist publications are often a word salad of convoluted language seemingly designed to obfuscate vs. enlighten. "People of Color" is essentially the same as "Colored People" but more stilted and lyrical sounding, and it is, of course, "good" while the latter is "evil".
I'm beginning to think that our assessment of his facial expression needs to be amended from smirk to sneer.
Smiling Faces Sometimes
The Undisputed Truth
Smiling faces sometimes
Pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces
Of the evil that lurks within (can you dig it?)
Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
Oh, oh, yeah
Let me tell you
The truth is in the eyes 'cause the eyes don't lie, amen
Remember, a smile is just a frown turned upside down my friend
So, hear me when I'm saying
Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes, yeah
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
(Beware) beware of the handshake
That hides the snake (can you dig it, can you dig it?)
I'm a-tellin' you beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Jealousy, (jealousy) misery (misery) envy (envy)
I tell you you can't see behind
Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes
Hey, they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
Hey, your enemy won't do you no harm
(Rap on) 'cause you'll know where he's comin' from
Don't let the handshake and the smile fool ya
Take my advice, I'm only tryin' to school ya
Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes

THEOLDMAN
It's time to dust off that incredibly sultry picture of the red-headed Althouse as a late teenager on a sofa under a psychedelic rock concert poster. We are back in 1968 and Crosby Stills & Nash reign. Teach your parents well!
Too much smiling in Asia is not a good thing.
CS&N were my favorite group by far. They had vastly more talent than the Beatles, whose popularity I never really did understand.
One good thing the hippies did - the music!
CSNY were great! Just gotta ignore most of their politics.
I found the picture. It was a Mailer/Breslin poster. It was the sofa that was psychedelic. Althouse was less sultry than zoned out.
CSNY were great! Just gotta ignore most of their politics.
At the time, I was in sync with their politics. But I still like their music
When I worked for General Dynamics anybody who would travel to, or work with, Navajo from our Navajo Facility were directed not to stare into eyes when speaking.
This was really odd for me because I was taught that this was rude but in this case would have been the opposite.
They dont smile because their teeth are all fucked up
Say, can I have some of your purple berries?
Your painted smile hides you still
While you search yourself within
Yesterday and tomorrow's found
Fused as one upon solid ground
As all around the milling crowd
Confuse themselves with raging sounds
And their loves forgetfulness abounds
So be thankful for your greasepaint, clown,
If lonliness wears the crown
Of the veteran cosmic rocker.
Now if you smirk at me,
I may not understand,
But I don't need to.
I can get CNN to run with it.
What a great musical reference. And it is upon us to discern. If someone smiles at me, or is nice to me, generally this is an inveigle, a flattery, in order to get me to do something. Sometimes it works. As a man, it is so wonderful to receive a genuine smile from a woman, as these sincere gestures are few and far between.

Smile
Nat King Cole
Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
Music composed by Charlie Chaplin, I kid you not.
