This may be more Peter, Paul & Mary — and more Christmas — than you really want...

... but here, I found this...

PP&M swoop into NYC in an animated flying sleigh and we see the twin towers....

It was 1988.

Trump tower in the remake, with you know who as Santa.

we see the twin towers....

Actually you don't. It's one tower copied, and not a bad job for such an early Photoshopping.

My little social circle of guitar players does a great version of "A Soalin". You can sit on a street corner of the Square of my urban river village with a guitar and cello during Christmas season and people will fill up your guitar case with money. I'm a little on the other side of that age wise but everyone loves that old English tune.

It was 1988.

The Towers would come down less than 13 years later. The view from the sleigh is s out what the Muslim pilots would have seen as they flew their hijacked planes into the buildings. Eight years after that Mary herself would be gone.

They are ominously non-upright.

You and me both rehajm, PP&M are such collossal frauds.

I know this is far afield, but one of the best books ever is Been Down So Long is looks Like Up to Me. A severely neglected first and last novel written by Richard Farina, Peter Yarrow's friend from Cornell who also wrote Pack up Your Sorrows.

Thanks for posting this. I used to look forward to the PP&M holiday special. The public television station in my vicinity ran an edited version a few years ago, and I missed the flying-sled opening. Maybe it was cut out post-9/11.

PPM represent the later years of what I call The Folk Scare. Think Red Scare if you don’t get the reference. This Land Is Your Land was early Folk Scare. Now That The Buffalo Is Gone was mid Folk Scare.

So PPM wanted to take down those symbols of capitalism long before the Muzzies?

I think I know what comrade Lynne Stewart, defender of the first bunch of WTC bombers, had on her playlist.

So they hijacked Santa’s sleigh and slayed the reindeer with box cutters.

It blows for you and me.

Trumpit म्हणाले...

George W. Bush, the rotten egg fertilized by the diseased, deceased GHWB, used the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in NYC as a pretext to start a new war against Iraq in 2003 that killed a million people and lined the pockets of many war profiteers such as Black Water, and Halliburton. Many American soldiers died and many more were injured. Schlump lied about having been against the war.

I am as right wing wacko MAGA as they come, and PP&M have always been among my very favorite musicians.

I really enjoy the late 50s and 60s folk singers such as The Limelighters and the Kingston Trio, as well the commie babes.

I can separate music from politics.

jaydub म्हणाले...

The one great regret in my life is that I never got to see PP&M, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan perform as a quintet.

This clip brought back an infuriating memory to Trumpit; hence his ire. One Christmas they were showing this video on the communal television at the Shelter, while he wanted to watch "Gabriel Over the White House" and Ritmo wanted to turn off the set and stare at the empty screen while blowing saliva bubbles. A fist fight broke out among the regulars, scaring off the Meals on Wheels people and ruining everyone's plans for Christmas Dinner.

I liked Peter Paul and Mary in the '60's, when I thought that Puff The Magic Dragon wasn't about marijuana. By 1988, two bald guys and an over-the-hill blond didn't have much appeal.

What, the "Up With People" special wasn't available?

What, the "Up With People" special wasn't available?

Too bad. We could have seen a young Glenn Close.

Molly म्हणाले...

When I was a kid, we weren't allowed to watch much tv, but one thing we did watch as a family was "Hootenany" which featured folksingers, including PPM, Dylan, Baez, Pete Seeger, Chad Mitchell Trio. I'll leave many out. But it was remarkably "counter-culture" -- anti war (in the hills of shiloh, johnnie has gone for a soldier), anti-conformity or anti-establshment (little boxes), anti-racist (if I had a hammer), even pro-labor (joe hill). TV today is not pushing back against "the power" in nearly the same degree. Perhaps because the establishment (the power) has come to think of itself as the anti-establishment. So attacks on the establishment are (shock!) attacks on us, instead of attacks on them.

Finally, listen to the (traditional 19th century British, or earlier) words to this Christmas song. It is sending the children a clear message : stand up for yourselves, don't just "behave". "We all want some figgy pudding, so [emphasis} bring it right here. and [emphasis} we won't stop until we get some.... This is as far opposite as you could get to "he's making a list and checking it twice, he's going to find out who's naughty and nice." Fuck nice -- we won't stop until we get some.

I thought Mary Travers ungrateful comments after having been an organ recipient sealed it for me, yet I have been able to enjoy some things again these last few years.

@ tcrosse - I knew the young Glenn Close. She was Glennie Wade then.
