Busy travel week. Colorado for a couple of days and then NYC to wrap up the week. I'll be sure to ignore all the insights from our Entertainment Crowd betters while I'm away.

Weather looks favorable for airline travel. If all goes as planned I'll walk through the door Friday night around 9pm. I like what I do, but the check makes weeks like this painless.

He had to. All the National Review crew has or will as we approach the 2020 election where an army of LLR Chucks will pull out all the stops to ensure the dems regain complete power.

How many of the News Articles on the riots in Paris mention that the tax hikes on fuel -- the cause of the riots -- are a result of the Paris Climate Accords?

and WMNWW, I also say:

If you go to
https://www.clintonfoundation.org/contributors
you can see cumulative totals for who gave the Clintons how much. There's sections
1. Over 25 million, seven donors including Elevate Social Businesses [Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership (Canada)] * and Frank Giustra, The Radcliffe Foundation

2. 10 million to 25 million, 20 donors

3. 5 million to 10 million, 15 donors including the Clinton Family Foundation?!

4. 1 million to 5 million, 165 donors, including Clinton Bush-Haiti Fund, Presidential Inaugural Committee.

I wonder if the "Presidential Inaugural Committee" was for 2016.

Somebody is lying about secondhand smoke. From Forbes:

A large-scale study found no clear link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer, undercutting the premise of years of litigation including a Florida case that yielded a $350 million settlement.

The article in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute details a study of 76,000 women over more than a decade, which found the usual link between smoking and cancer. Lung cancer was 13 times more common in current smokers, and four times more common in former smokers, than in non-smokers.

The study found no statistically significant relationship between lung cancer and exposure to passive smoke, however. Only among women who had lived with a smoker for 30 years or more was there a relationship that the researchers described as "borderline statistical significance." Over at the Velvet Glove, Iron Fist blog, however, journalist Christopher Snowden notes "there's no such thing as borderline statistical significance. It's either significant or it's not," and the reported hazard ratio was not.

Worth a repost to dovetail nicely with @Home's Clinton charity post:

As to why the Clintons do it -- my guess is that it costs a lot to keep the Clinton machine going.

A lot of people have spent a lot of time advancing the Clintons' interests. They need to be employed whether a Clinton is in office or not, and Hillary needs to keep them on the team if she wants to stay viable.

Once upon a time, those people would be employed by the party. But we're in an era of private political machines, so candidates have to pay for their own party apparatus. Which adds up fast.

Name any historically significant figure, and somebody out there is butthurt about him:

"He demeaned himself to get a department in the university, so that he could teach and write some strange books that none of those present here today have read," says the naval officer in the video, identified by local media as Vice-Admiral Igor Mukhametshin, head of the Baltic Fleet staff.

Last week, three Kant-related locations were vandalised with paint: his tomb, a monument to the philosopher and a memorial plaque commemorating the place where his house once stood.

Flyers strewn around the monument expressed satisfaction that "the name of the German Kant will not tarnish our airport."

The spokesman for Kaliningrad's Gothic-style basilica, which houses Kant's tomb, said he couldn't understand the motive behind the anti-Kant protests.

"For Kaliningrad residents, for thinking people, Kant is not a citizen of any certain country, he is an individual of a planetary scope," spokesman Vladimir Silinevich told AFP.

From WaPo:

"PARIS — French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe announced Tuesday that the French government would temporarily suspend the controversial carbon tax plan that triggered weeks of often violent protests around the country.

To help curb climate change, the government had proposed a slew of new carbon taxes that were slated to take effect in January 2019 and were designed to wean consumers off diesel and other polluting fuels and to favor electric cars. But the price hikes those taxes represented triggered a wave of social unrest unseen in recent years that quickly became a full-blown crisis."

This struck me because yesterday I was reading about just this set-up in Goldsworthy's Caesar: Life of a Colossus. Viz., that politics was individual, not organized via permanent parties, requiring vast personal wealth for the politically ambitious. (Which required all kinds of plunder and corruption to obtain, of course.)

Good read (so far), btw.

Interesting to see if, or for how long, that calms things down. "Temporarily" aside, the demonstrations seem to be an expression of a much larger set of grievances (from different constituencies), a flash point, and not a single complaint that can be easily addressed by postponing or changing a bit of legislation here and there.
