"An all-male Princeton University a cappella group will no longer perform a song from Disney’s 'The Little Mermaid' because some students there complained that the performance promotes misogyny and 'toxic masculinity' and violates consent."

The NY Post reports.
The singers, known as the Tigertones, have for years performed the song “Kiss the Girl” by picking a man and a woman from the audience and encouraging them to smooch on the cheek, according to Inside Higher Ed.

In the animated movie, the tune is crooned by a Rastafarian crab to encourage a prince to kiss a mermaid — and features the lyrics, “My oh my/ Looks like the boy’s too shy/ Ain’t gonna kiss the girl.”...

“[It’s] more misogynistic and dismissive of consent than cute,” sophomore Noa Wollstein wrote in the Daily Princetonian on Nov. 26. “By performing the song multiple times each semester, the Tigertones elevate it to an offensive and violating ritual,” the piece, titled “Dear Tigertones, please stop singing ‘Kiss the Girl,’” proclaims....

“Such expressions imply that not using aggressive physical action to secure Ariel’s sexual submission makes Eric weak — an irrefutable scaredy-cat,” it adds. “These statements suggest that masculinity is contingent on domination of women. This attitude can catalyze violent tendencies toward, and assault against, women.”

Besides when 25% of women who attend college are apparently being raped, going after a cappella groups for singing songs is petty.

They are all wrong about the interpretation anyway. The crab isn't asking for "sexual submission". Is kissing sex? Ariel wants to be kissed, but can't speak. Eric isn't weak or a scardey cat, but he too wants to kiss Ariel.

Do these people who write this stuff never start up a relationship? Do they have no memory or experience of how it feels to care about someone and you aren't sure if they feel the same? And all the sweet torture that goes along with that?
Is it all about, ask if you want to have sex. Be straightforward, never wonder or have miscues with them? Everybody is confident?

Why do I suspect people who write stuff like this are, in reality, like mattress girl, begging a guy to f*ck her harder and hit her while she's doing it?

This is what happens when life gets too easy, too predictable, too safe. We are designed to root out dangers and solve problems, so what can we expect when people don't have enough real dangers to occupy our nature. There is no place safer and more coddled than a college campus. It's a continuation of a challenge-free environment that starts in daycare and doesn't really change much for 2 decades. How can people raised that way have any perspective, gratitude, or inner strength? Some do, but there is plenty of room for those who don't want too, and they are accommodated and given voice in their weakness and delusion. This can only get worse, until we get a good cleansing existential threat like another world war that hits home hard. These people will be no help with that real threat when it comes. They are incomplete people, and we made them that way though our own weakness - boomer weakness.

My mother will start to worry - Beautiful, what's your hurry?
Father will be pacing the floor - Listen to the fireplace roar
So really I'd better scurry - Beautiful, please don't hurry
Maybe just a half a drink more - Put some records on while I pour

The neighbors might think - Baby, it's bad out there
Say, what's in this drink? - No cabs to be had out there
I wish I knew how - Your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell - I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell

I ought to say no, no, no - Mind if I move in closer?
At least I'm gonna say that I tried - What's the sense in hurting my pride?
I really can't stay - Baby don't hold out
Ah, but it's cold outside

I've got to get home - Oh, baby, you'll freeze out there
Say, lend me your coat - It's up to your knees out there
You've really been grand - Thrill when you touch my hand
Why don't you see - How can you do this thing to me?

There's bound to be talk tomorrow - Think of my life long sorrow
At least there will be plenty implied - If you caught pneumonia and died
I really can't stay - Get over that hold out
Ah, but it's cold outside
Oh, baby, it's cold outside
Oh, baby, it's cold outside

To same sheltered leftwing pearl-clutchers - This is all-cool.

They are almost entirely aimed at anything masculine or traditional, but especially masculine. It is essentially religious in fervor and mindlessness. He's wrong. Presenting political disagreements as threats to "safety" is not driven by anything intrinsic to the students. Threats to safety invoke a duty by responsible parties. Thus they allow the speaker's activist allies (both faculty and administrators) to take actions they would not otherwise be able to justify in the absence of this duty.

This is purely a political consideration, the students are playing the role (victim) the process requires but which cannot be performed by more powerful political actors.

"The Little Mermaid" is a nearly flawless movie which I have seen in theaters upwards of 50 times.

To follow myself up, here's a longer take I posted on an animation forum at the time of TLM's first re-release (something Disney used to do before home video, and was still in the last stages of doing at the time):

I know I'm probably preaching to the converted, but I sense some anti-Disney sentiment here from time to time, so let me say it:

If you are an animation fan you owe it to yourself to go see "The Little Mermaid" in a theater.

Find one with good sound and go --- now. Video is just not the same. Seeing it seven years ago is not the same. I think I've seen every Disney animated feature except "The Rescuers", and "The Little Mermaid" is simply the best. There is no better song in the Disney repertoire than "Kiss The Girl", unless perhaps it's "Under the Sea". The story is seamlessly constructed, the songs all fit the action perfectly, and Airel is the most self-directed Disney heroine ever. She doesn't sit around while the story happens to her; the decisions she makes at key points drive the action and her choices lead to an irrevocable break with her past.

The character animation is flawless. From that quick look of determination Airel gets just as she makes a decision and springs into action to the glare of annoyance she gives Flounder when he has gotten her into trouble with her father, every nuance rings true. The staging works incredibly well also; I can think of no more poignant moment in animation than when Airel sings "Part of His World" and reaches out towards the surface from the confinement of the cave, nor a more powerful image of resolve than when she reprises the song on the rock with the waves crashing around her.

So, support new animation, sure: Go see Anastasia too, but do go see "The Little Mermaid". If you leave now you can probably catch the next show.

I've just read an article where some nutty professor is claiming that the Christmas story is about lack of consent. Get that? They're now saying God raped Mary.

Where does it end? How do we punish this type of harmful shit? I believe in free speech, but I also believe in consequences for speech. We are never going to restore our culture and society to health until this stuff is stopped. But how?

Leland म्हणाले...

My guess is that for her there are exceptions, probably based on the artists' status as victim or cultural representative.

Maybe not Laslo.

The context of the song in the movie is that a female has lost the ability to provide consent, as she is the unwitting victim of a scam perpetrated by another female. The purpose of the scam is to trap the victimized female into slavery. The lobster friend is trying to entice the man to "Kiss the Girl" in order to save the female's life.

Further, the victim female is in the process of undergoing a species change. She is really a mermaid, but she identifies as human. The scam is predicated on providing her species altering surgery. So we are talking about the intersection of trans and slavery, and this female's victimhood isn't enough to support her friend trying to get a man to "Kiss the Girl".

So allowing a Kiss to save a person from a lifetime of slavery and species misidentification can't be condoned in Princeton.

I was on a plane. There was a mother there who had two kids, barely walking.

She was alone. No man. No friend. Stuck with two kids, one of whom was always awake.

I am a husband of decades, and have raised many children. I was a preferred babysitter when I was even a teenager. I can teach and motivate, entertain and distract kids.

As women continue to try to push men out of society, I don't think they realize exactly what they are going to miss in return.

Lori Gottlieb, an IVF single mom, has a clue that many of today's women don't, at these costs.

She wrote in 'Marry Him!' in the Atlantic:

Marriage isn’t a passion-fest; it’s more like a partnership formed to run a very small, mundane, and often boring nonprofit business. And I mean this in a good way.

and

Just as the relationship books fail to mention what happens after you triumphantly land a husband (you actually have to live with each other), these single-mom books fail to mention that once you have a baby alone, not only do you age about 10 years in the first 10 months, but if you don’t have time to shower, eat, urinate in a timely manner, or even leave the house except for work, where you spend every waking moment that your child is at day care, there’s very little chance that a man—much less The One—is going to knock on your door and join that party.

**

I left her to her burden. Because a man who approaches a strange woman must be a threat. Because a man who is willing to play with a kid must be a pervert. Because women would rather worry about that 1 in million chance that a man is a threat rather than have 5 minutes to eat a snack, use the bathroom, or take a quick nap. IN AN AIRPLANE.

So she deserved the consequences of her fear.

Bob Loblaw म्हणाले...

It's one more way feminists make women miserable. Women want men to use nonverbal cues to figure out when she wants a kiss. Asking verbally takes all the fun out of it. How many women actually want this? Ten percent? Fifteen?

“Such expressions imply that not using aggressive physical action to secure Ariel’s sexual submission makes Eric weak — an irrefutable scaredy-cat,”

Did they watch the movie?

I realize this is a stupid question in the culture war, but still.

In the movie, Ariel is in love with the Prince, has run away from home to be with him, has made a binding contract with Ursula which requires her to be kissed by him or lose her voice permanently, and has enlisted her friend Sebastian, the Rastafarian crab who sings the song, to help make the Prince fall in love with her. And kiss her.

They're on a romantic boat ride, and she's making doe eyes at him.

She's a consentin' fool, is what I'm saying. There's more consenting than you can shake a stick at, but less kissing than you can shake a much smaller stick at.

Zach म्हणाले...

I just watched the scene again. It's really beautifully staged.

As with most musicals, the song is an expression of what's in the character's heart. The interesting thing is that, although Sebastian's the one singing it, the point of view is the Prince:

There you see her
Sitting there across the way
She don't got a lot to say
But there's something about her

And you don't know why
But you're dying to try
You wanna kiss the girl

Yes, you want her
Look at her, you know you do
It's possible she wants you too
There's one way to ask her
It don't take a word, not a single word
Go on and kiss the girl, kiss the girl

Is this the only song in a Disney movie that's sung from the Prince's perspective?
