Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said the sisters had alleged that they were abused by family members and sought asylum on those grounds in the United States.... "The money started to run out — that’s what we believe started to happen," Shea said.
The sisters were found on rocks beneath a pier on the Upper West Side. They were fully clothed and bore no signs of trauma. Silvery duct tape was wrapped around their ankles and torsos, leading to speculation they might have been killed and dumped.
But Shea said the duct tape was loose, more like it was meant to keep them together rather than bind them. He said police had every indication that the Fareas were alive when they entered the water.

"No indication Saudi sisters found dead and bound with duct tape in NYC were killed, authorities say."
A puzzling headline in The Washington Post. How isn't bondage in duct tape an indication of murder?

Sounds like self-taping to me.
They didn't want to go back to living under a theocracy.
I can understand that.
Three-legged race and they fell off the pier?
There must be something wrong with my Internet connection. The story reads NYC and not Fort Marcy Park.
Lawyers call for new warning labels on duct tape.
WARNING: Will not make you float like a duck.
I read the Post account and also followed your link, Crack, (to the "I'll be Damned.." post) and I accept your premise that here in NA, let alone the rest of the world, there can be found already enough examples of somewhat crazed belief systems. (Also watched the Lipstick Killers video - I don't remember them, so thx)
My premise is simpler. Two sisters - who may have been abused in the past - run away from a shelter after a year there, when the reality of that life's (likely) monotony sets in. Nobody seems to follow after them. Live large for a few months. Then, as often happens when you have a self-fulfilling loop of two people feeding each other the same grand fantasy - convince each other that death is the only way out, when likely neither would have wanted that, separately, or if they had a third party to talk to, without the other sister there.
Loners go crazy because they don't know how to reach out. Other people are induced into crazy / tragedy because they don't know how to step away from each other. Some of us know how to handle being alone better, some of us know how to handle not being swept up by the enthusiasms of others better.
Of course the media focus is on the family and the fact that they are Saudi, but I ask: what happened at the shelter, that they allowed the 16yr old to walk off after a year there? That part sounds troublesome.
Some Leftist filmmaker will link it to Trump.
It sounds like "bound" is the wrong word. They should have said "tied together."
Linda Sarsour could not be reached for comment.
The answer is: when it looks like an “honor killing”.
Poor little shits.
I did hear a radio report that said they were "Saudi women (sisters) who were fearful that they would be forced to return to Saudi Arabia." If that is correct then I can imagine a situation in which sisters bound themselves together in a suicide pact and took themselves to a river to drown. (I hope it is obvious that i have no personal information on these lines, but only that I am presenting a hypothesis that is consistent with the facts we know and with the NYPD pronouncement that there is no evidence of foul play.
