The face of the Democratic Party's old-age problem.

Donna Shalala — who was Bill Clinton's Secretary of Health and Human Services (and, before that, the Chancellor here at UW) — is running for Congress, seeking elective office for the first time at the age of 77.

I see the NYT ran an interview just before the primary (which she won yesterday). Let's see if they addressed the question of whether she's too old to begin a congressional career, the general oldness of the Democrats in Congress, and whether all the Democrats these days are either too old or too young (as if middle age doesn't exist anymore).

No. They didn't.

There is no question they are going to force some dem out of office somewhere to clear the runway for Chelsea and woe to any dem who is targeted by the Clintons and refuses to walk away gently. The whole Chelsea thing has a whiff of desperation. I don't think it will work.

I've never thought Huma was Hillary!'s secret lesbian lover. Instead, she was Chelsea's replacement as the Clinton heir. Huma follows Hillary! into the White House and works a couple of key executive branch positions, while Anthony Weiner climbed the ranks of the House Democrat leadership. They're soon the next D.C. power couple, and one of them eventually runs for President. Chelsea was sent to a bunch of schools and married off as soon as it was apparent that she wasn't cut out for politics.

From a Washington Post feature on Shalala, April 1993.

Shalala describes the transition of power in Washington as a critical point in American history, a juncture of need and opportunity that calls for a great leap forward in social policy. Something akin to the creation of Social Security in 1935, which she calls the most sweeping advance in social service programs ever. This is the time and these are the people, she says of herself and her counterparts. It is time to make history. "We've spent our whole careers waiting for this moment," she says. "We better seize it."

I think in some ways it is both, with the former causing in part the latter. I'm not directly familiar with either parties' inner workings, but it strikes me that for last decade or so, the Republicans have had a much healthier bench than the Democrats. I suspect that Republican politics are much less territorial, than Democratic politics are. All a Republican needs to check off is want low taxes, low regulation, have to be at least moderately pro-life, and you can't be anti-gun. If you got those down there is a lot of wiggle room. In Democratic politics it strikes me as much more identity politic oriented so everyone is prone to stake out their own fiefdom, and make the most of it they can, so come election season someone has to appease the left-handed gay latino caucus or they won't stand a chance in California. Weird groups like this that you have to appease structurally favors the entrenched existing candidates because they have already developed relationships and knowledge. And I'm certain people like the Clintons loved this fact and used their powerbase to strangle off any support for possible up and coming challengers while they were still in the crib.

So what is a young aspiring democrat to do? If you aren't a favored political family scion, like Drooling Joe Kennedy who was bestowed the response to the state of the union address by democrat muckety-muks, then the only way to get noticed is to develop your own constituency powerbase. And in democrat politics the the most under-served constituency group are the far-left wacky socialists. So why wouldn't Ocasio-Cortez seek them out? That gives her a seat at the table. Short and medium term this is bad for Democrats and good for Republicans, long term it is bad for everyone because we might get ridiculous policies that politically can't be undone and doom the nation. Venezuela 2.0 is just around the corner.

The Dems lost a lot of seats at every level under Obama. Most of those were younger Dems, because the old guard are safely ensconced in deep blue districts (it's how they got to be the old guard). Going hard left plays well with the donors, and keeps the old guard in power because it pleases the activists. But it also means that red-state Dems are put in a tough position; they either go hard left as well, or try to veer towards the center and risk pissing off the base that they need to win primaries and raise money.

I've heard that 120,000 more Republicans than Democrats voted in Tuesday's Florida primary. So I think that the generational change won't play out as the Democrats presently expect. It seems that there is something wrong with the pollsters where they can predict very well how Democrats will vote or change but they have been far off on the Republicans since Scott Walker and the Trump polling failure hasn't taught them anything. I guess the pollsters think Florida voters will go for Shalala because she's old. But in Shattered it distinctly says that the Florida voters who went for Trump were retirees from the Mid-West and their voting pattern early in the evening predicted the fall of the Blue Wall of the Midwest later on. In other words, older people are related to younger people and respond to the dilemmas and needs of their children and grandchildren. Trump is creating a chance for the younger generation to be prosperous workers, not sullen welfare parasites. And Shalala is associated with The Resistance and It's My Turn. Resistance to what? to that prosperity. It's My Turn to? To bring about Venezuela North.

The Florida 27th is in the southeastern corner of the state and the Cuban-American vote is important, as is the Noo Yawk snowbird vote. The Democrats in Florida have just nominated the least likely to win candidate for governor. Anyone who knows Florida knows that a state that does not have a state income tax nor allow a local income tax, has a homestead property tax cap and forbids the state from issuing general obligation bonds is not going to elect a progressive as governor. And if even by some horrible miracle he were to be elected there is no chance the legislature is going to pass such a hike in the corporate income tax. To begin to even fund what Gillum supports not only will the Democrats have to win both houses of the legislature along with the governorship but to fund their agenda they will need to amend the state constitution to eliminate the homestead cap on property taxes, pass an amendment to pass a state and local income taxes and permit the state to float general obligation bonds. Good luck with that. There is a reason people leave tax shitholes in the Northeast to come to Florida.

As for Donna Shalala, having met her at several charitable events when she at the UM, I can say she is a very smart, personable and likable woman. I wish she would have remained at the UM where in my opinion she did a great job in fundraising for medical research. Can she win? Possibly but Salazar has the edge and if Illeana comes out supporting her she will most likely win.

steve uhr म्हणाले...

She recruited and hired Pat Richter in 1989 as AD. He inherited a program in disarray, with outmoded facilities, struggling teams, and a deficit of $2.1 million.

He made a priority of modernizing the sports facilities, including construction of the Kohl Center and renovations to Camp Randall Stadium. He reversed the financial fortunes of the department, erasing the deficit and building a budget reserve of $6.4 million.

Richter hired Barry Alvarez in 1990. Alvarez inherited a program that had not had a winning season since 1984, and had only won seven games in Big Ten Conference play in that time.

Considering the awful state of the program he'd inherited, Alvarez engineered a very quick return to respectability. After only winning eleven games in his first three seasons (including a 1–10 record in his first year), the Badgers steamrolled through the 1993 season, notching a 10–1–1 mark and their first Rose Bowl appearance since 1963, along with only the second bowl win in school history. During his tenure, the Badgers won or shared three Big Ten titles and played in three Rose Bowls (1994, 1999 and 2000), winning all three of them. He also led the Badgers to 11 bowl games; before his arrival they had been to only six bowls in their entire history. The 1998 team notched the first 11-win season in school history, while the 1999 team won the school's first outright Big Ten title in 37 years.

Richter also hired Dick Bennett and Bo Ryan, both of whom took the basketball team to the final four.

Democrats are big into taxes as long as other people are paying them. When it hits them personally, they move to Florida. Or Texas or other states without state income taxes. Rick Scott has been a very good governor and will probably beat Bill Nelson. I doubt there will be a blue wave in Florida this year. I have a suspicion the Democrats will have huge turnouts everywhere they were going to win anyway but the Republicans on balance will win what they need to win to keep both houses of Congress and most of the state governorships and state legislatures they already have.

On the other hand, the special election polling this year has been really really on point. What this all means, I do not know.

Here's Marc Caputo on twitter:
Privately, some Dems despair Gillum will lose to DeSantis. But some Republicans say it’s advantage Gillum. Really, none of us knows. Still, these concerns, relayed by a top Republican vet of Florida & national races, are instructive

Caputo said his Republican source said Gilum would be President within 12 years. That seems unlikely, but who knows? Lots of stuff is happening in the last 2 years I would not have predicted.

It'll be interesting to see if the pollsters can accurately poll Florida for this November. Exciting times!

Yes, probably.

But the polls did miss Gilum winning. A bunch of people voted they were not expecting to vote.

I don't know what will happen. It's why it's interesting to watch.

Larry Sabato last night, 1 hour before Gilum won:

As has been obvious all along, Gwen Graham is very likely the D FL GOV nominee. As her successful race is analyzed, don't omit wise daily advice she received from her Dad, ex-Gov/Sen Bob Graham. No living person knows more about FL politics, or has been more successful. #FLVotes

Soros and Steyer spent big in the FL Governor race. Hence the D winner.

Will they be able to do that in November ?

He is the Socialist candidate. Statewide ?

I love baseball.

Moneyball is one of my favourite movies. Genuine upsets are fascinating to me.

I cannot guess many of the Florida races. We'll see what happens in November. Good times!

UVA director of the Center for Politics. publishes Crystal Ball.

wikipedia:
"Sabato's Crystal Ball is run by the University of Virginia Center for Politics in Charlottesville. The site contains analysis of an array of political races in the United States, including presidential elections, Senate, House, and gubernatorial contests.

Predictions accuracy until 2016
Prior to the 2002 midterm elections, where the Republican Party saw gains in both branches of Congress, Sabato's Crystal Ball website accurately predicted the outcome in 433 of the 435 contests for the House of Representatives and 32 of 34 Senate races.[8]

In 2004, which saw Republicans retain the White House and gain seats in the House and Senate, Crystal Ball correctly predicted the outcome of 525 of the 530 political races (99% accuracy), missing only one House race, one Senate race, one governor's race and two states in the Electoral College.[9]

In August 2006, Crystal Ball predicted that the Democrats would gain 29 seats in the House of Representatives and 6 seats in the Senate, providing them with a majority in both chambers. Sabato's predictions proved correct: each of his 33 Senate predictions were accurate, and in the House, Democrats gained 29 seats on election night, the precise total predicted by the Crystal Ball (Democrats went on to pick up a 30th seat in the December 12, 2006 run-off in Texas' 23rd district).[10]

In 2006 Sabato was named the most accurate source of election predictions by MSNBC, CNBC, and Pew's Project for Excellence in Journalism. In 2006, he was the only national analyst who correctly predicted the exact Democratic gains in Senate and House contests.[10]

In July 2008, Crystal Ball correctly projected that Barack Obama would win the presidency in a near-landslide.[11] Sabato predicted a 364–174 margin in the Electoral College, as well as the popular vote percentages.[12] The prediction was merely one point off the mark, with the actual result on November 4, 2008 being Obama 365 and McCain 173. (It did not predict an Obama win in Nebraska's 2nd congressional district, as he did not make separate predictions for individual congressional districts in states that split their electoral votes on such factors (he started making separate predictions for such districts in 2012, probably because of this occurrence)). Crystal Ball also accurately predicted 34 of all 35 Senate races, and 11 gubernatorial races correctly.[13]

In November 2010, Crystal Ball projected that Republicans would pick up 55 seats in the House of Representatives.[14] The Republicans picked up 63 House seats. It predicted a pickup of 8 seats in the Senate for Republicans.[15] The Republicans picked up 6 Senate seats.[16]

In 2012, Crystal Ball projected that Obama would win the presidency with 290 electoral votes to 248 for Romney; there would be no change in partisan makeup of the Senate, with Democrats at 53 and Republicans at 47; and Democrats would pick up 3 seats in the House of Representatives, for a result of 239 Republicans and 196 Democrats.[17] The projection was similar to the actual results, but Crystal Ball under-estimated Obama's number of electoral votes (332) and under-estimated Democratic victories in both the Senate (Democrats picked up two seats) and in the House (Democrats picked up eight seats).

Crystal Ball made widespread incorrect predictions in 2016, wrongly predicting the outcome of the presidential race, as well as the outcomes of the House and Senate races. The night before voting took place, Sabato appeared on MSBNC and stated that Hillary Clinton would win 322 and Trump would win 216 electoral college votes; in fact, Trump won 306 and Clinton won 232. Sabato and his staff summarized the results in an article entitled "Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa."[18]

I've been thinki g of Hardin all day. A way to be cool would be tie in the lyrics "Baby, why don't you just meet me in the middle, I'm losing my mind just a little, so why can't you just meet me in the middle" to our boy/my man Hardi n. Irony was meant for me, not you olds.

Old people is okay but I don't see why they're not smarter at that age.

Think of what/how/why a younger Hardin, with all that Brainhorse IQ talent, could have done, if things were so slightly (ever) different easily lazily we could declaim from upon high the resounding clarity. Alas.

I can understand staying on the Supreme Court. The clerks do most of the work, and the chairs are nice and comfy. As long as your snores aren't too loud, no one makes a fuss when you take your nap during opening arguments. But running for Congress is a different matter. You have to appear alert and energetic and engaged with your constituents. Many here will claim that Congress is one of the best publicly funded old age homes in America. That's true enough for incumbents like Conyers and Thurmond, but she's running. She's not actually in Congress. My heart goes out to that poor old lady. If she wins, I hope they give her Conyers old office. It's got a sleeping alcove and a changing station.

Sarah Hoyt, like everyone else over at Instapundit, would be reluctant to admit how much she agrees with me - age isn't the Dem's problem:

"Just a reminder: if you hear dog whistles, you’re the dog.  OTOH if you’re receiving transmission from Mars in your dental fillings, you’re a democrat."

Because the Democrats, it's a cult - and it's a cult no one is helping, no one wantsa to help, and no one will help. Not because there's no victims, but because they're having too much fun at their expense to address them as fellow citizens in need.

When the leader is bragging his wife does yoga and whatnot - no matter what science says - and the followers are asking:

"WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD?"

That's when, I think, things start to get,...questionable.

You know what? I'm wrong and everyone else is right - fraud in this country is perfectly under control - especially in the health field:

Some names heard discussed for a 2022 presidential run...

Hillary Clinton - 70
Joe Biden - 75
Elizabeth Warren - 69
Bernie Sanders - 76

But yeah, a lifelong party insider running for one of 535 House seats, who nobody outside of her home district will ever hear about whether or not she wins, is "The Face of the Democratic party's old-age problem."

As far as I can tell it doesn’t require much energy to be a politician beyond riding around in a golf cart and Shalala who jumped around in a Badger outfit can surely do that.
