What is the talking about? Sex with Dad in the Taurus?
Get a copy editor or give us a trigger warning.
Here's the article, "Talking Sex With Dad (in the Ford Taurus)/You know that scene in 'Lady Bird' when Saoirse Ronan throws herself out of a moving vehicle to avoid talking to her mother for another second? That was me, at 14, in the car with my father." Here's the nub of it:
Today I’m one of those queers who can find a narrative about sexuality in anything. But my father’s warning that sex was “not as important as the sitcoms would have us believe” has often reminded me that sex in America is as much marketing as it is a means of pleasure or self-expression.
I begrudgingly thank my father for these excruciating exchanges we shared in the 1990s. Today, when some men seem to confuse physical abuse with consensual role play, when teenagers are consuming pornography at a younger age, and when abstinence-only sex education is getting a renewed push, I look back and realize what a blessing it was to have a father who made me want to crawl out of my own skin every now and then. (Also, I spent pretty much my entire 20s embarrassing him back.)

It read okay to me. Talking in the Ford Taurus, presumably because the kid can't escape. No other possibility was in view. The parens would have to move next to sex.
I don't see how it's a good lead-in to an article about sex being wildly overrated, though.
“sex in America is as much marketing as it is a means of pleasure or self-expression.”
Pleasure or self-expression. Are those the only alternatives to marketing?
Perhaps it would've been better to have been in that Ford Taurus learning the facts of life from a smart, hilarious, queer, Jewish, feminist, anarchist theorist.
Maybe she's the aunt in that scenario.
I am Laslo.
Thank you, Ann, for reading the Times so I don't have to.
The purpose to the post is to focus on the bad headline? Other than that, the content is wholly without merit. I have never considered writing well enough to think any other person would care enough to read it. This makes me think I can be the next Tom Clancy.
This is as interesting as a shopping list.
It does seem to me that "queers" (of any kind) get considerably more obsessed with sex than us "normal" (is anyone quite normal?) ones.
After all, there are lots of other things in life that needs our attention if we are to survive.
Laslo is back? Neat.
Sex with Dad in the Taurus?
Incest in mid-priced cars is the new market inefficiency.

The NYT reads like Facebook.
"forget it, Althouse. It's the Times..."
I am Laslo.
Yes you are.
"It does seem to me that "queers" (of any kind) get considerably more obsessed with sex than us "normal" (is anyone quite normal?) ones."
That's not what this particular writer had to say about himself.
With this one weird trick.
Why is this guy trying to market his opinion about sex talks?
It's the new buttsex.
Ann Coulter on Fox News.
Sean Hannity asks her: "Suppose your own children were gay?" This is her cue to talk about how she would love and respect them and accept their choices.
Coulter: "I'd tell them they were adopted."
His dad had the talk with him in a Ford Taurus?!?
No wonder he ended up gay.

I'm pretty sure that's what the talk with dad was about;
the sexual assault by his shqJfat Aunt in the Ford Taurus. It's what turned him queer
Would it have turned out differently if the talk had taken place in a Subaru Outback?
wait a minute, maybe it was DAD that was sexual assaulted by the shqJfat Aunt in the Ford Taurus.?
I am so bummed that I can't have a Suburu Outback or wear flannel shirts.
if the talk had taken place in a Subaru Outback
There'd be a lot less bull.
"Having Sex with Dad (in the Taurus)" would make the meaning clearer.
According to an earlier post, Law Schools are now teaching Creative Writing...
Maybe Journalism Schools should consider teaching Writing
Homosexuals in Cars Getting Sex-talk.
Talking sex is phone sex without the phone.
One-string banjos get to be annoying to have around.
I have enough managing my own problems and do not really want to hear about yours - especially this kind.
The Kiss by Kathryn Harrison.
Talking sex with taurus is just as frightening.

Most of left wing agitation is just getting back at Dad and trying to make his life miserable.
The NYT is good at many things, but sex talk is not one of them.
I don't care and you can't make me.

Feminine: what you said.
Apologies for Spellwreck(TM): “Femeinine” = “Temujin.”
Also, nice to see Laslo back!
I read the headline, and my mind didn't jump to thoughts of incest.
As a Pisces, I can see why talking about sex with a Taurus is wrong.
Jesus Take the Wheel !
NYT reader/writer just ashamed of being seen in a Taurus, even 20 years ago, has to expiate his guilt/shame in public...gay not so bad...
An interesting intro of sex by a father was detailed in the Anthony Kiedis (red Hit Chili Peppers) autobiography - Scar Tissue, a fun read. AK's parents were divorced and AK would stay with his father Blackie -- a B actor in Hollywood and drug dealer - for a while every summer and eventually moved in. Sonny Bono was his godfather and Cher/Sonny would sometimes babysit AK. AK was exposed to heroin and cocaine as a teenager at parties thrown by his father's friends. On one visit to SoCal, when AK was 12, he went with father to Rainbow Room where Blackie's girlfriend was dancing. "Anthony asks, 'Dad, can I have my first sexual experience with your girlfriend?' And Blackie says, 'Sure, son.' "So they go back to the house, and his dad builds a big bed out of four mattresses in his room and puts the girl in next to him. "And that's how he loses his virginity."
During all the back and forth about Asia and the 17 year old boy I kept thinking that the rules just don't seem to be the same in Hollywood and the world of Rock-n-Roll. We admire and miss David Bowie even though he slept with a 14 year old girl (as did Jimmy Page and a bunch of other rock stars - sometimes the girls were 15 or 16). Not sure what my point is, except that I think there are artistic cultures within our culture where the rules and morals are completely different and (though we don't talk about it much) we simply do not hold their members to the same rules; maybe that's behind my lack of horror at the Asia thing.
OK, show of hands. How many people have sex as a "means of self-expression"? Is everyone really doing it differently like some kind of art? Do you graffiti your partner's body, or photograph them in avant-garde poses? What exactly is the self expression? OK, maybe a fake orgasm can be damned good acting, but it's not like you record it to show it off at the local art bazaar.
You are just satisfying biological urges, releasing pent up energy and drive, or maybe giving your partner some pleasure, but it ain't art. In fact, would any of us even do it if there wasn't a biological drive to? Usually we make an effort to avoid any physical contact, and sex is a pretty weird thing to do without the drive pushing you.
I love sex, but I don't really want to talk about it, except with my partner, and even that is really just a way to get more or better sex.

Of course, the rules DID apply to Chuck Berry. Of Course, UNLIKE the rockNrollers mentioned.... Chuck was from St Louis. Yeah, that's what made him different, St Louis
Well, it IS the NYT. I expect clinkers from them.
"Today I’m one of those queers who can find a narrative about sexuality in anything."
As opposed to all the other queers who can't find a narrative about sexuality in anything?
"But my father’s warning that sex was “not as important as the sitcoms would have us believe”"
How many gay men have or would have taken that advice? Did the begrudgingly grateful (good for him) author live up to it?
The writer inches his way to an insight. But as the "reporting" on sex abuse in the Catholic Church shows, all issues pertaining to homosexuality are still treated very, very gingerly, including, perhaps especially, by prog commentators.
I wish I could find the story I read yesterday, a HuffPo piece about a gay man who recalled having sex with older men in the library when he was 14. He wished he could have talked about it with his dad, if only to find out if it was Bad.
But his dad couldn't pick up on the signals and ask, so that was Bad, too.
Now that there's a documentary about the gay pimp Scotty Bowers revealing that most of the old stars were gay or bi, I'm reminded of the books that have been coming out since the 1920s that condemned Hollywood morals. Oh, how we laughed at those Puritans.
Except they seem to be right. Most of the people in Hollywood are deviants who go out there because either they're emotionally damaged and feel alienated from their family and society, and discover they have the license to say and do anything they want.
Plus, they get to make cultural products that normalize and excuse their behavior. Win-win, and civilization loses.
Welcome back Laslo! Do you think the girl with a ponytail on a treadmill learned about sex in a Taurus?

This is one of my big gripes. Back when gays were in the closet we still pretty much knew who the gays were. Rock Hudson might have been able to fake it on screen, but he only had to do that for the length of a take, and they could do a retake if need be. And, son, when it comes to acting straight for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, you ain’t no Rock Huddon.
But you got your job done and the work was good and you were part of the team and we respected you.
Now that you’re out, you never miss a chance to disrupt team cohesion, and when you goof off instead of doing your job, you threaten an EEO complaint for anyone trying to get you to work as hard as your teammates. You went from being a solid employee to a problem child I would like to unload on someone else’s project, preferably a competitor. And it’s no one’s fault but yours.
The girl with a ponytail on a treadmill would NEVER set foot in a Taurus!!
(maybe, when she was 14; and babysitting, and the dad gave her a ride home?)
I understood what the headline was saying, but I see the ambiguity. If the NYT is okay with headlines like that, they need to stop pretending that they don't understand Trump's oddly-phrased tweets.
Hoo boy, Big Mike nailed it:

If it offers a chance to normalize sexual perversion, Althouse will post it.
Sex education in the Taurus near the deli. Biology was politically incongruent and an inconvenient truth.
