“You have to stand for something,” Trump declared Tuesday... While the White House signaled Trump may be open to a narrow fix to deal with the problem [of separating parents and children], the president spent the day stressing immigration policies that he has championed throughout his surprise political career...
“I think this is one of his best moments. I think this is a profile in courage. This is why America elected him,” [said former Trump senior adviser Steve Bannon]. “This is not doubling down, it is tripling down.”...
Worried that the lack of progress on his signature border wall will make him look “soft,” according to one adviser, Trump has unleashed a series of tweets playing up the dangers posed by members of the MS-13 gang — which make up a minuscule percentage of those who cross the border. He used the loaded term “infest” to reference the influx of immigrants entering the country illegally....

Come on Schumer. Into the trap. A little further. That’s right. It’s Democratic control of the Senate on the trail in front of you. It’s lying right on top of the carefully-placed leaves with no one around...
The word he is looking for is "invaders."
Were these policies "protectionist" under Obama? Also, isn't protectionism related to trade policy not immigration? Does the AP know what it is writing about?
Does the AP know what it is writing about?
No.
One simple solution would be to send back adult illegal immigrants with their kids to their country of origin.
No separation, no entry - seems like win-win.
I think about this issue in terms of duty. The first duty of the US government is to citizens of the United States. The American government owes no duty to foreigners who show up at our border contrary to our laws.
I wish Trump would frame this as a duty issue.
There are lots of lawyers here so this is familiar. I recall the first year of law school and the duty discussion was new to me.
I wish Trump would frame this as a duty issue
As a CEO, his first duty was duty was always to maximize earnings for EXISTING shareholders.
Weird they associate immigration policy with the NFL protests. I'd think that a better analogy would be policy not "culture wars." Comparing it to the tax cuts is stronger in context too because it is more of Trump carrying through on a campaign promise that turned into successful policy. Reading this makes me think the AP writer just didn't care.
Obama just had to be concerned with keeping the Choom Wagon upright.
Question #1: Do nation states have the right to decide which non-citizens may enter?
Follow up question: What are nation states'permitted' to do to enforce the decision?
(Hint: air quotes beg the question of who permits)
It is also weird to discuss the immigration debate without referencing the most recent developments. Namely, Schumer confirming Trump's belief that Democrats don't want a solution by saying they'd reject any bill to keep the focus on Trump.
Terrible Trump frames his winning issue as whether or not we chose to surrender the sovreignty of the USA to the Mexican Drug Cartels who are now into industrial trafficking their other merchandise which are hordes of Central American children for sale as replacement population slaves.
Because Trump's economic boom is winning more African American voters every day, this emergency replacement population of Hispanic peasants is the Dem's last hope to make us into their very own Venuzuelan Marxist Shithole.
One of the things I was glad to say goodbye to when Obama exited as president and as our lecturer-in-chief was having to listen to the refrain "This is not who we are". Sigh, this ginned up family separation "crisis" has brought it back and the crescendo is hurting my ears.

While acting responsibly and ethically, you failed to add. Those two things come before profits. Besides, as president, Trump's not running a business, he's running a country for the benefit of its citizens. He should be trying to maximize their well-being without making things worse for future generations. He should be mindful of the environment, and try to improve it; instead, he's making it worse. Trump's a fool and a tool, so we have to look past his destructive presidency. He can't be ignored, but he can be resisted.

If I understand correctly this is where the “zero tolerance” part comes in. Sessions wants them charged and tried between “catch” and “send back”. So at least some temporary separation.
Maddow breaks down and makes herself the story from last night. She breaks the first rule of journalism.
Trump would never do that. He could make this about his commitment but that gives the Dems what they want - a story about Trump.
Keeping the focus on MS-13 and drug smuggling and jobs and wages is the winning move.
You know because the media wants it to be about anything but that.
That keep trying to make it about “Trump is mean”.
“Sessions wants them charged and tried between “catch” and “send back”.”
First time’s a misdemeanor. Second’s a felony.
If there are no consequences, people just keep trying to enter until they succeed.
While acting responsibly and ethically, you failed to add.
Where'd you learn that? The unemployment office?
Surprised you didn't say a CEO's job is the increase diversity. That proves you haven't gone to college in the last three decades.
The AP still is claiming children are being held in cages. What should a President like Trump do in face of this storm of pure propaganda bought by the enemies of the United State's citizens. Hint: it won't be surrender.
It looks like Trump is trying to force Congress into enacting an immigration law that makes at least some kind of sense and can be enforced, but the Democrats are saying, hell no, we won't; just rule by executive orders like Obama did!
And then they will turn around and blame him for that too.
Pedro was never separated from his kids. He stayed in Mexico until his legal immigration was processed under the USA's generous immigration policy.
Be like Pedro.
"hardline"
Democrat hack press opinion speak.
Personally, I'd say that "let's abandon enforcing the law and have de facto open borders" is a "hard-line stance", but I guess that's just me.
I checked the network news this morning at 5 am and they're flogging this story nonstop. The dipshit local MT stations are taking it to our reps, of course, and running a crawl about "growing outrage" at the bottom of the screen. No agency there, of course. The spouse is very susceptible and hates Trump anyway. If one doesn't put on a sufficient show of Concern to strangers on Twitter, one lacks empathy.
God how I hate the manipulation.
Oh, but those cryin' kids...DO something!
You'd have to be nuts to think it is a good idea to bring your children into this uncertain landscape, unless you thought that at the end you'd all be reunited on this side of the border. Something very cynical is going on here. Immigration activists are feeding this "crisis".
Ship 'em all back, and let them apply to come here legally. Who could be against that?
I love it when the Left--including the Media--speak with one voice. In exactly the same words. One would dare call it a conspiracy. Jorn-o-List Lives!
Why does the Left object to sending the kids back to the beautify country of Mexico?
Why does the Left hate Mexicans?

We are already there. This is all street theater, drama for the chumps.
Note that there is a Euro version of this with various outcomes throughout the EU.

Yes, it was very grating to hear it, given that this is who we are!
Our biggest problem is our long term infestation of liberals, an infestation that eats away at our core. They're an abomination/obamanation. Look what they've done to our country.
Sheriff Joe (no he will not become a Senator) was the most popular politician in AZ for about 10 years because he was the most ardent advocate of "enforce the immigration laws." I think this is an issue where most Americans (whether they will publicly admit it or not) line up with DT and the elites on the left (and in the EU) are completely, completely out of touch.
When are we going to turn the U.S. into the Soviet Union in order to honor our patron Marxist saint, Robert Cook?
It's our moral duty.
We have entered a new phase of the relationship between the press and the Democrats. The press is now enthusiastically engaged in whipping up social hysteria in support of the Democrats. There is no longer the pretense of objectivity. There is no longer the pretense of journalism. This is pure propaganda.
Responsible journalists would have at least asked the Democrats these questions:
(1) How is Trump's policy different from the policies of GW Bush and Obama?
(2) What do you suggest as a practical solution?
(3) What does current law dictate? What specific legislative changes have you proposed?
(4) In what ways are illegal immigrants treated differently from US citizens who commit crimes?
Robert Cook has sadly learned that the only way to see a true Leftist is to stand in front of a mirror.
People: You can have a social safety net (our welfare system + social security) or you can have lax boarder controls. You cannot have both. Trying to have both will destroy our own kids.

This is just another manifestation of the 20 month outrage machine, so most people will just ignore it. I was surprised they used it now instead of late October. A common misconception.
A CEO's primary duty is to increase shareholder value, not earnings. One common way to increase value is to increase profits/earnings but it is not the only way.
One problem with profits is that they are taxed. If distributed to the shareholders, they are taxed twice. Once to the company when earned and again to the shareholder when distributed.
If the shareholder does not need the earnings, and most people don't since their stocks are mostly for retirement or other future needs, there is no point to them. Best to just let them ride.
Amazon is probably the most famous example. They had no profits at all for a long time. They now have very small profits. They pay no dividends to shareholders.
But shareholder value has increased pretty dramatically. Initially the stock was $18/share. $100 invested then would be worth over $100m today.
BTW: Jeff Bezos is now worth $140bn or so. Since virtually all his wealth is in Amazon stock and since he receives no dividends on it, his taxable income is pretty much his Amazon salary. About $3mm.
So the richest man in the world pays perhaps $1mm/yr in taxes. (I'm fine with this, BTW)
John HEnry
A 10 year old with down syndrome is doubling down. Superfetatious.
But women might get tired of ordinary Mexican kids and you've got to keep the news cycle.
The maximize earnings is a general rule but there might be exceptions. They would need to be spelled out by the shareholders, though.
Trumpit's statement about social justice and responsibility may be true. Companies have a responsibility to act legally and ethically. But this is a means, not an end.
Ethical and responsible behavior will usually help improve shareholder value.
Depending on what the behavior is, of course. Getting woke may make fans of non-shareholders but does not seem to do shareholder value much good.
CEOs also have a fiduciary duty to shareholders to minimize taxes paid. Legally, of course.
John Henry
A stock's price is the present value of all its future earnings.
It's also the present value of all its future dividends. The two are equal.
It's unfortunately hard to compute, but at least you know what you have to guess at.
As a CEO, his first duty was duty was always to maximize the value of the existing stock. For existing shareholders (obviously, and to draw the analogy with citizens).
Earnings was a brain fart. Trumpit causes gas.

By that metric, the price of Amazon stock, currently over $1,700/share and Berkshire-Hathaway ($286m) should be zero.
Neither company, by policy, will ever pay a dividend.
Policy could change but there is no reason to expect that it ever will.

Trump rid us of the Obama/Clinton White House infestation. Thank you Trump for MAGA.
Madison and Hamilton were convinced that the biggest danger to the USA government would be a Congress that does too much and dominates the Executive and judiciary. They didn’t foresee that the biggest danger that Congress poses is failure to do their duty from fear of losing votes. We saw this sort of paralysis in the Senate leading up to the Civil War. We will lose our government because of political malfeasance long before we are overwhelmed by illegal aliens. But every mite helps when the globalists are at work.
Neither company, by policy, will ever pay a dividend.

Arbitrage. Somebody buys out the company and pays dividends.

Minuscule, eh? I'll wager the AP writer blew the dust off her thesaurus out for that one. Does she know that the majority of these "undocumented migrants" attempt to gain asylum by the claim that MS-13 or other Latin American drug gangs seek to rape, torture, and kill them?
Don't sell them short, dreams -- MS-13's spark of divinity is their guiding light. Nancy Pelosi told me.
Why hasnt trump or a fellow traveller explicitly framed this as a black v brown issue?
In the war of images: lefty shows brown kids crying at the border; trump shows black kids crying in the inner city.
The connection? Illegal immigrants undercut the blue-collar wages that should be going to blacks. Their ESL needs push already stretched urban school systems to the breaking point and deny black kids the public education that is part of our social contract. My role as president is to protect the people who have been here for 400 years and didnt even want to come!
Or red v brown: show kids on the reservation crying. My role as president is to make amends for the sins of English colonists, not the sins of Spanish ones and their mestizo elite successors.
Watch lefty heads explode...

So you are saying that this expectation is what drives the stock price? That also assumes that the company has profits. Amazon has very low profitability. The hope that someone, sometime in the future, will pay some of them out as dividends does not seem like it would be worth much.
Even at low interest rates the present value of an event happening 10 years in the future is pretty small. At 20 years, it's not far from zero.

I'm not sure the outrage machine is going to work. Yes, there are weak GOP politicians but the voters are pretty much on Trump's side, This is a manufactured crisis, probably to keep down attention of the FBI scandal.

but wait - children in cages!, you heartless bastards. Disgust!
Where does Stormy Daniels stand on the immigration debate?
At the border, with open legs.
There is an acutely anti-native, trans-human outlook on the left.
Emigration reform addresses the collateral damage from social justice adventures.
Emigration reform in the Western hemisphere begins at Mexico's southern border, before men, women, and children make the trek cross-country, families are separate, adults are separate from children, and human rights abuses are committed by migrants and asylum "child shield" seekers.
Moral reform addresses Planned Parenthood et al, an unprecedented violation of human rights, and corruption of scientific knowledge. Population replacement only serves to obfuscate these twilight policies.
The scenes captured during the Obama administration did not need to happen.
The inspector general’s report about the FBI’s handling of Hillary Clinton’s private email server scandal, released on Thursday, said:
" We have profound concerns about the volume and extent of unauthorized media contacts by FBI personnel that we have uncovered during our review.
In addition, we identified instances where FBI employees improperly received benefits from reporters, including tickets to sporting events, golfing outings, drinks and meals, and admittance to nonpublic social events.
We will separately report on those investigations as they are concluded, consistent with the Inspector General Act, other applicable federal statutes, and OIG policy."
But wait... Children are in detention cages! *Obama did it too*
If you're thinking about this logically and factually you're doing it wrong. It's all about FEELZ!
Republicans need to 'do the right thing', and if they do, the media will love them again.
Someone from Tony Blair's cabinet admitted they opened the migrant gates to shove diversity and multiculturalism in the faces of UK deplorables. Who did it hurt most: traditional Labour voters.
"When are we going to turn the U.S. into the Soviet Union in order to honor our patron Marxist saint (sic) Robert Cook?"
That's where we're already headed. We're beating them in numbers of persons incarcerated. No incarceration gap!
As for compensating for explicit and implicit (e.g. labor arbitrage) tariffs, it places native people, including Americans, first, draws attention to immigration reform in second and third-world nations, including refugee crises forced by social justice adventures, and perhaps lifts the veil of privacy a la National Socialists in first-world nations - baby steps.

I emphasized the "nothing has changed" because it has not. This is the same policy that Obama enforced for 8 years and Bush enforced before that. It's the same policy President Trump has enforced for 18 months now.
Why the outrage all of a sudden? Some might say upcoming mid term elections and that might have something to do with it. I don't think it explains it very well, though.
I think the real reason is the OIG report, Strozyk, Comey, the Russian fiasco, the Russian court case where Mueller indicted a company that did not exist for influencing the election with a terabyte of Russian language social posts, Seth Rich and more.

Oddly, those incarceration numbers, Cook, in the U.S. correspond to a dramatic decline in violent crime.
Blacks commit most of it. We sensibly put a lot of them in prison.
So that you can screech about racism. It’s a perpetual motion machine.
Black men could cease committing so much violent crime. But, they’d shed a lot of asset value for commie propagandists, wouldn’t they?
n.n--that is some deep water. Generally, tariffs imposed by the US are paid by Americans and lead to higher prices for both imported and domestically produced goods. The government picks winners and losers and special pleading and cronyism come to the fore.
Trade controversies are real, but imposing tariffs is a lousy way to deal with them if you are putting Americans first.

Getting these people, who have generations of unemployment behind them, into the work force will not be easy. Even for unskilled jobs they will need to learn some basic skills. Show up on time, get along with others, follow instructions and so on.
It can be done but will take some effort.
I suspect that it will get easier as it develops. People will see their neighbors working, having trips to Disneyworld, new car, moving out of the slums and so on. They'll start thinking "If that fool cousin of mine can do it, I can do it too."
When it does, it will turn LBJ's statement about the civil rights bill on it's head. Instead of "We'll have those n|ggers voting Democrat for the next hundred years.", those black men and women will be voting Republican.

What do you suggest ?
Have you noticed that China is having debt problems ?
BEIJING—A bruising trade fight with the U.S. lands at a difficult time for China as its economy contends with rising headwinds, constraining Chinese President Xi Jinping’s options.
While Chinese officials have been bracing for a trade war for months—promising to match the Trump administration measure for measure—signs are rising that China’s recent economic expansion is ebbing, from weakening investment and household consumption to increasing corporate defaults, in part due to a key Xi initiative to contain debt and fend off financial risks.
That slowdown is triggering mounting calls from some corners of the government for Beijing to reopen the credit spigot and ease off on Mr. Xi’s program before the trade conflict further dents growth.
If you read Grant's Memoirs, you might have noticed his account of his first experience in combat in the Mexican War.
He was very nervous about meeting the Mexicans in combat until his troops crested the hill and discovered the Mexicans had retreated.
He discovered that they were as afraid of him as he was of them.
China is not the colossus some think. They have problems, too.
I see that my name was used in the first post of this comments page.
You miserable lying sack of shit, Darrell. Earlier this week, I posted that I actually supported the Trump Administration's legal position with regard to the separation of children from adults who were arrested as illegal entries outside of regular border crossings.
I called the opening statement of DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen at the Monday press briefing a "tour de force."
So when you ascribe a policy choice to me on this, you're just lying. Lying, when I am two days ahead of you on actually telling the readers of this comments page exactly where I stood.
Of course -- and this I say this with all of my devout hatred of the Trump Fanboyz like you that have poisoned these pages almost beyond usefulness -- the big problem in the current immigration debate is that even a legally defensible and technically credible position will be hard for Trump to defend because he has wasted so much political capital on dumbshit ideas like a "wall," and all of his stupid blatherings about a "Mexican judge" in his disastrous Trump University civil fraud case, etc., etc., etc., etc.

Picky, picky, Dr. K, but that story is from the Civil War.
Grant served in the Mexican War, but never was in command of troops.
The answer is to include illegally crossing the border within the definition of "child endangerment" under federal law.
Trump should propose federal legislation adding illegal border crossing with a minor to the federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA).
Child Endangerment laws make it a crime to endanger the health or life of a child through an adult's recklessness or indifference. Some states include child endangerment offenses in existing child abuse statutes, whereas other states made child endangerment a separate offense....
Federal legislation provides guidance to States by identifying a minimum set of acts or behaviors that define child abuse and neglect. The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) (42 U.S.C.A. § 5106g), as amended by the CAPTA Reauthorization Act of 2010, defines child abuse and neglect as, at minimum:
"Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation"; or
"An act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm."
This definition of child abuse and neglect refers specifically to parents and other caregivers. A "child" under this definition generally means a person who is younger than age 18 or who is not an emancipated minor.
While CAPTA provides definitions for sexual abuse and the special cases of neglect related to withholding or failing to provide medically indicated treatment, it does not provide specific definitions for other types of maltreatment such as physical abuse, neglect, or emotional abuse. While Federal legislation sets minimum standards for States that accept CAPTA funding, each State provides its own definitions of maltreatment within civil and criminal statutes.

Another oldie, but goodie.
Even at low interest rates the present value of an event happening 10 years in the future is pretty small. At 20 years, it's not far from zero.
Divide the interest rate into 70 and that's how many years to double, to estimate compounding.
However, inflation tracks interest rate, and earnings track inflation, other things being equal, so it sort of cancels out as far as inflation based discounting goes.
The usual trick to raise today's stock price is to show growth, which, if it exceeds inflation, produces an infinite value if you assume it continues unchanged. So you can get some piece of that with nifty bookkeeping. A growth stock buying stodgy old companies is one favorite trick. Earnings go up every year (growth!) leading to a higher stock price and ease in buying another stodgy company. It works until some analyst sees through it.
Hi Michael K--
My post speaks for itself. Americans pay for protective tariffs, and special pleading and cronyism show up regularly. If our complaint is that the Chinese are stealing our IP, tariffs aren't going to stop that. If our complaint is that the Chinese manipulate their currency to keep prices to the US artificially low, that is one reason that the Chinese are starting to be financially stressed.
Generally, voluntary transactions between trading parties leave both sides better off. Government interventions generally benefit some and punish others, but politics and cronyism decide who benefits. With unemployment approaching historic lows, American workers seem to be doing well in the circumstances and will do better. I understand the politics of Trump's posture, which is consistent with his campaign rhetoric, but I question whether it really benefits Americans, as opposed to raising prices, limiting choices, and distorting markets.
But maybe it will be different this time.
...his hardline immigration stance... [of following the law]
DB@H recited: “In addition, we identified instances where FBI employees improperly received benefits from reporters, including tickets to sporting events, golfing outings, drinks and meals, and admittance to nonpublic social events.”
Hmmm. Where did starving reporters get that kind of money? May I suggest the trifecta of Slim, Bezos, & Soros?
It’s the thought that counts.
I love the framing of MS-13 and cartel/gang members as "a small percentage" of those crossing the border illegally.
There were 415,000 apprehensions last year. How many crossed but did not get apprehended? We don't know. Let's assume it's 2x as many - meaning we apprehend 1/2 of border crossers.
A "small percentage" of crossers being MS-3/cartels/gangs would mean, say, 1-10% - or between 8,300 and 83,000 gang members are illegally crossing into the U.S. each year and half of them are being caught - the other half are entering. And perhaps we should assume that a gang/cartel member has better odds of crossing undetected than a impoverished person
That may be a "small percentage" but that's a huge freaking number of people belonging to extremely violent and criminal organizations.

Trump will keep on fighting on immigration, and won’t fold.
And the longer it goes on, it non narrative stuff will surface. Or Trump will find something to smash the Overton window in immigration. My guess is he’s testing responses and seeing what works.
From what I read, Democrats won’t agree for immigration reform, since this way they resist Trump. So the Ryan amnesty won’t happen. Short sighted thinking by the Democrats. Actually good for the us.
Gut feeling - Trump is getting a lot of hidden support on his immigration stand, but nobody will admit that because of the fear of “racism” and being heartless on “think of the children”.
Timing as mentioned is strange on this immigration children issue. Makes sense it was to distract from the IG report, and the destruction of Comeys reputation. The sudden change to lack of coverage of Stormy by the media is a wow. The Stormy meme was not working to destroy Trump, so it got dropped. I feel strange typing that, like I’m a conspiracy nut, but the Blatant politicizing of the press is the only explanation I can see of these actions. With Stormy the press was screaming Trump is going to be impeached any day, and now just chirps.

Generally, voluntary transactions between trading parties leave both sides better off.
Remember that Trump suggested zero tariffs.
See how far that goes.
We are back to the woman in the bar who is insulted by an offer of $10 for sex. "What do you think I am ?"
$10,000 is another matter altogether.
Personally I think we are seeing negotiation. I just read Conrad Black's biography of Trump.
Worth reading.

I think Grant was called on to command some troops in the Mexican War due to the injury or death of the commander. I think that is when Grant first learned that he could remain calm and take the measure of a battlefield situation.
Though I could be wrong.

I still think the story was from the Mexican War but I am not at home and don't have my copy of his Memoirs handy.
From Wiki:
Grant was tapped to serve as regimental quartermaster,[51] but yearned for a combat role; when finally allowed, he led a cavalry charge at the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. He demonstrated his equestrian ability at the Battle of Monterrey by carrying a dispatch past snipers while hanging off the side of his horse, keeping the animal between him and the enemy.[52] Before leaving the city he stopped at a house occupied by wounded Americans, giving them assurance he would send for help.[53] Polk, wary of Taylor's growing popularity, divided his forces, sending some troops (including Grant's unit) to form a new army under Major General Winfield Scott.[54] Traveling by sea, Scott's army landed at Veracruz and advanced toward Mexico City.[55] The army met the Mexican forces at the battles of Molino del Rey and Chapultepec outside Mexico City.[56] For his bravery at Molino del Rey, Grant was brevetted first lieutenant on September 30.[57] At San Cosmé, men under Grant's direction dragged a disassembled howitzer into a church steeple, reassembled it, and bombarded nearby Mexican troops.[56] His bravery and initiative earned him his second brevet promotion to captain.[58] On September 14, 1847, Scott's army marched into the city; Mexico ceded the vast territory, including California, to the U.S. on February 2, 1848.[59]
I recall it from the Memoirs and it was the Mexican War. I'll be home tomorrow night. I'll try to remember.

Maury Povich will run the program.
Chickelit - But please, don't say the democrat party operatives at the FBI are in bed with the democrat operatives in the media.
We must offer our outrage over the children in Trump's cages.
Build a wall (at least create a physical barrier that prevents entry), and families willing to endanger their children by bringing them on a long dangerous journey will not be separated from them. Human traffickers will also have a much more difficult time bring children or teen MS13 members here, and drug dealers will have a harder time transporting drugs.
In the meantime, ask all Democrat members of national and California congress to house a few immigrant families in their homes. According to immigration numbers, only 2000 children are in this situation, there are about 10,000 unaccompanied children as well.
Right; Darrell's quoting me above was in the context of my SUPPORTING Trump's nomination of Gina Haspel as Director of the CIA.
And elsewhere, I have never denounced Ben Carson or stigmatized him racially. I have complimented Dr. Carson personally. My reference as quoted by Darrell was not an insult aimed at Carson. It was most definitely an insult aimed at Trump.
And about that judge, Darrell; Trump had hired the best lawyers in Southern California (including O'Melveny & Myers) to represent him in that case and if there had been any good reason to recuse Judge Curiel, they would have done it. They didn't, because it was always a specious and insulting claim made by Trump.

Divide the interest rate into 70 and that's how many years to double, to estimate compounding.
Well, yes, of course. But I don't know what use that is here. That gives you future value and you were talking about present value.
PV is the inverse of future value. The future value of $100 in 1 year at 10% interest is $110. (Very simplified)
The present value of $110 to be paid in 1 year at 10% is $100. (very simplified)
Neither has anything to do with stock pricing. It may have something to do with valuing the expected dividend stream. In the Amazon/B-H case the expected dividend stream is $0 so the present and future values are both zero.
Stock price for Amazon and B-H is based on 1) The underlying value of the assets "breakup value" but more on 2) The expectation that the stock price will continue to rise.

"MS-13 gang — which make up a minuscule percentage of those who cross the border."
That's great to hear. We can relax knowing that they will only rob, torture and kill a miniscule percentage of citizens. Probably far less than 1% of us. That's a relief.
Do MS-13 gang members register their arrival at the border? I mean, I wonder how we know how many are crossing.
What do we do with a child that is accompanied by an MS-13 gang member just to scam the system? Do we give the child back to the gangster, set them free in the desert, keep them, send them back to Mexico, or look for their loving parents who gave them to the gangster for his use. I'm sure they would never do that again.
There's no fucking context that excuses a spontaneous vulgar construction such as "Department of Black People".
Here is some trivia of Grant for you, at the turn of the century, Grant was considered our greatest leader by the people even ranked higher than George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
"From what I read, Democrats won’t agree for immigration reform, since this way they resist Trump. So the Ryan amnesty won’t happen."
-- Trump offered them a great deal (DACA, amnesty, etc.) all for The Wall and an end to chain migration. It would've angered his base so much, but Reid and all said no. It was a perfect chance to split Trump and his base AND get policy Democrats wanted. Yet... no deal.

Good book title.
I don't know how this immigration thing will settle out, but if Trump is pushing it, and the entire left, media, and anti-Trump GOP are against it, history shows Trump will win in the end. Despite the long existing, but suddenly shocking optics, the facts are with Trump, and he will be the one fixing it, becuase the Dems don't want to. In the end, that will leave only rabid anti-Trumpers fighting on that side. Everyone else will eventually learn and accept the truth: Trump didn't cause this, but he fixed it. Sound familiar?
The MSM Cult of Lies
Shit sandwiches for everyone!
We will know we have a Trump cult when we see children in schools led by their teachers singing songs of the President's transcendent glory like we did with Obama before he accomplished anything, which we are still waiting on.
People who supported Obama accusing Trumpers of being a cult could not be less self-aware.
Your real MS-13 problem isn't due to members crossing the border, but a concentration of young men of the target culture living in the US.
That is, the greater the number and proportion of young Central Americans in the US the larger the recruiting base for MS-13 and other such organizations. Its not usually understood that MS-13 was founded by Salvadorans in Los Angeles. Its a US organization for the most part. And it also recruits second-generation members, in areas where the local population is largely Central American.
If you want less MS-13, prevent the immigration of Central Americans, full stop.
Trump is in the tactical position of being able to offer the Dems anything and being assured they will resist it. They would probably resist his impeachment if asked for it.
Trump should offer to resign when the wall is completed.
You're a Trump cultist if you don't buy leftwing lies.

at the turn of the century, Grant was considered our greatest leader by the people even ranked higher than George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
Grant was much like Harding. Both were undone by friends but personally not corrupt.
Harding was a better president as he and Coolidge stopped the 1921 depression by cutting spending and regulation.
Grant was a better general but, unlike Sherman who despised politicians, he allowed himself to be made president and then was unable to control the corruption of his supporters.
Sherman was more sophisticated.
Hagar, you are correct. It was the Civil War.
We halted at night on the road and proceeded the next morning at an early hour. Harris had been encamped in a creek bottom for the sake of being near water. The hills on either side of the creek extend to a considerable height, possibly more than a hundred feet. As we approached the brow of the hill from which it was expected we could see Harris' camp, and possibly find his men ready formed to meet us, my heart kept getting higher and higher until it felt to me as though it was in my throat. I would have given anything then to have been back in Illinois, but I had not the moral courage to halt and consider what to do; I kept right on. When we reached a point from which the valley below was in full view I halted. The place where Harris had been encamped a few days before was still there and the marks of a recent encampment were plainly visible, but the troops were gone. My heart resumed its place. It occurred to me at once that Harris had been as much afraid of me as I had been of him.
I had forgotten the incident but found this in the gutenberg version of the Memoirs,

This is known as the "bigger fool" theory of wealth accumulation.
From EDH's link above: A "child" under this definition generally means a person who is younger than age 18 or who is not an emancipated minor.
That sentence makes absolutely no sense. Every single person in the world meets that definition of "child". I'm guessing the "or" is supposed to be "and".
Family Detainment Centers as I suggested a few days ago are now being considered by the Trump Administration. He supposedly will be signing an Executive Order later today, reversing separating children from their families. The public pressure worked, thanks to Democrats, the Press and decent people everywhere. Now how many children will be reunited with their parents and how many will have been lost? This Zero Tolerance policy depended on using the terror of separating children from their parents to deter those seeking asylum and from illegal border crossing, also as a bargaining chip for the Wall. The black eye that Trump has given himself and his Party won’t be forgotten anytime soon. November is coming.
I Pledge alliance, to the corrupt leftwing dictator in smooth clothing. I will blink and nod when he lies to me about affordable health care. I will nod and blink when I hear the smooth jazz of coordinated Rice-Clinton Benghazi lies.

It'll be interesting to see how it works. Unless I'm mistaken, the law as it stands would require a separate living facility for each family, which could get prohibitively expensive pretty quickly.

Do you mean in the concentration camps of North Korea? Maybe in the slave marts of Sudan, or Libya? You were perhaps speaking of Yazidi teens kidnapped by Muslims in Iraq? Or were you possibly referring to the 14-year-old girl raped and murdered by an "asylum-seeker" in Germany?
Of course not. You don't give a flying fuck about children, you lying bag of self-satisfied sanctimony. How many Guatemalan foster kids are sleeping in your house tonight?
“It'll be interesting to see how it works. Unless I'm mistaken, the law as it stands would require a separate living facility for each family, which could get prohibitively expensive pretty quickly.”
It was done on GTMO with Cuban balseros. Families and even townsfolk were kept together while their asylum applications were being processed.
So, it sounds like Trump is both:
A) Pushing back: "Your images were from 2014."
B) Solving the problem since Congress won't.
Inga - you didn't answer my question.
Were you this outraged when Obama kept kids in cages and wrapped them in foil?
Here's the problem with Trump's executive order: It can be undone by the next president. This isn't a solution so much as a band aid. Also, I can hear the news reporter insisting this is a Trump era-only policy, despite, you know, it not being a Trump era-only policy.

Because giving your child to coyotes, and gang members or dragging them though the desert was not as scary as having America house, feed, and care for them in conditions superior to their homes for a couple weeks before returning them.
The Dems did not want this fixed, becuase they just lost the one thing they thought they could use to take the House back in November. Just like I said above, Trump didn't cause it, but he fixed it. Too bad Obama didn't do this instead of letting children be torn away from their mother's breasts as he did. Why didn't he fix that? Answer: Fen's Law.
Hah. People are already saying on the news: "Children can't be detained for long periods of time; is detaining them with their parents setting up a legal fight?"
It's like... they don't realize that's EXACTLY why Trump said this isn't a good long-term solution.
" It can be undone by the next president."

On Friday Trump, on the White House lawn during a gaggle, said he couldn't accomplish keeping families together with an EO. Hmmmm, what made him change his mind? Public pressure. They tried to keep these child detention centers secret, but thanks to investigative reporters the secret got out. No one will be forgetting anytime soon.
"Why didn't he fix that?"
-- Not enough pressure was brought on Obama. Obama was very, very prickly about appearing moral and upright. Sure, that could be bought, as his "principled" stance against election money was bought out, despite McCain standing by his stance -- but when it came to his personal legacy, Obama was very adamant about that being preserved.
Think. Had the media produced those pictures of kids in cages years ago; had they followed up about missing children and those stolen by coyotes and child traffickers years ago -- Obama could have saved unknown numbers of children.
Instead, he looked the other way.
Bagoh @ 11:45.
Koolaid drinkers like Inga don't understand that.

-- What are you talking about? We knew about these detainment centers since Obama's administration, and Trump isn't going to manage to keep the families together long-term with an EO. If you listened, it is a temporary stop-gap measure to buy Congress time to fix the law.
So, Obama spied, Clinton colluded with foreign sovereigns and agents, DNC denied the vote, the affiliated "deep state" committed multiple civil rights violations, and journolists staged a multi-trimester cover-up and lynching on their behalf. And now, they are providing cover for Obama-era policies that created refugee crises, separated families, and left children in cages.

Goodness, Igna, I am continually amazed at the depths of your erudition. Cuban balseros! Who knew? I expect you learned about that when you were getting your doctorate in Latin American Studies, right?. Igna's thesis was on balseros, as it happens, and she could talk about them off-the-cuff for hours.
Or, wait. Did you maybe just come by that little facticle a few moments ago? In an e-mail, from your handler?
The left care about children and families like they care about Cindy Sheehan.
Frankly, the only "new" thing we've learned is how old this policy was (back to 2008 or potentially the 90s, mattering which iteration you want to look at) and that the Obama administration literally handed children to sex traffickers without doing background checks, much like with their F&F program.
Odd that piece didn't cause outrage.
Sarah Sanders explaining to the amoral shitheads that Bush signed this law and it is congress's job to write the law.
Inga can wave her bloody shirt.
But we all know you don't care about these kids.
You didn't for at least 8 years.
Now you just look like the cynical amoral opportunist you are.
Like: Kids being temporarily detained in unpleasant environments is worth us changing our policy about. These centers can be done better, as can our border policy.
But... uh, could we maybe get a follow up to the government accidentally giving kids to child traffickers? Like, I feel like maybe we missed the big ticket item here.
Children were not seperated from parents who had committed only a misdemeanor at the border, under Obama. This separating children from parents with only being charged with a misdemeanor is NEW. Zero Tolerance Policy, ever heard of it? Try harder to break out of your cultist mindset. Maybe some of you can do it, others are too far gone.
"Hmmmm, what made him change his mind? Public pressure."
Wait, I thought he was a dictator. That can only mean that Hitler could have been stopped with just some public pressure, if the media was just woke back then.

That was before both the Flores decision and the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act.
You do make at least some effort to understand what you're talking about, don't you?
It's not that Igna doesn't care about children in North Korean concentration camps, or Yazidi sex slaves in Iraq. She might even be willing to say a bad word about the "asylum-seeker" who raped and murdered the German girl, although he was Muslim and she was Jewish, so Igna is understandably more concerned for him than for her. It's just that thus far, Igna has not been instructed to make her concern for those children public. Should Igna's trigger be pulled, rest assured, her concern will be voluble and dramatic. Igna will be ready to sacrifice anything you own for those children, and to attack as a heartless monster anyone who does not join in her frenzied lamentations. She is just waiting for instructions from her handler.
"Children were not seperated from parents who had committed only a misdemeanor at the border, under Obama. This separating children from parents with only being charged with a misdemeanor is NEW. Zero Tolerance Policy, ever heard of it?"
-- Just because Obama didn't enforce a law didn't mean it wasn't a law. He could have changed the law instead of just ignoring it. He didn't, because he lacks moral courage.
