"The United States has become the first country with an embassy to Israel located in Jerusalem, the disputed city claimed as a capital by both Israeli and Palestinian people."

"The new embassy was dedicated on Monday in a ceremony attended by Israeli leaders and senior White House advisers. Tens of thousands of Palestinians are protesting the move, and dozens of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli armed forces, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.... For many years the U.S. — like the rest of the world's countries — have declined to put the embassy in Jerusalem, saying that the status of the city needs to be decided in peace talks with the Palestinians. President Trump made a campaign promise to relocate the embassy. He was not the first president to make such a promise, but he is the first to actually make the move.

NPR reports.

"Palestinian protestors had been killed. Which is sad, of course." Of course the news reports say that they had explosives and some threw fire-bombs. Sad!
A lot of this is Israel's fault; they mishandled the Palestinian situation badly, partly because of pressure from well-meaning fools the world over. When they conquered the Green Zone in 1967, they should have immediately annexed the part they felt they needed for security, or even wanted. They should have offered full Israeli citizenship to any Palestinian who wanted to stay within those regions - on condition that they immediately become and behave as loyal citizens of their new country. Failing that condition, they would have to leave, pushed across the new border: a country doesn't need to tolerate enemies within its borders, regardless of their origin.
Instead, Israel decided to "play nice", and has paid a terrible price ever since.

Palestinians would have good lives, and almost certainly a state, if they spent some time trying to make their lives better rather than making Israeli lives worse.

They will never be as close as they were in 2000. Read Dennis Ross's articles about that agreement that Arafat refused to sign. There were western investors ready to put money into hotels and tourist attractions.

In my view, there are only three logical explanations as to why the Palestinians rejected the Clinton Parameters in 2000. First, maybe the deal met the needs of the Palestinian people, but the leadership was short-sighted or mistaken and turned it down anyway. Second, the deal may have been flat-out unfair or inadequate, making the Palestinians right to reject it. Or third, perhaps the Palestinians had not yet come to terms with Israel’s permanence, and therefore they believed that they could simply outlast Israel and get all the land.

Ross emphatically refuted the second option, explaining that Israel made wide-ranging concessions on a number of critical issues. Seeing as he was there in 2000, I’m inclined to defer to his assessment. Ross also dismissed the third option, citing polls that show popular support on both sides for the two-state solution. Indeed, he believes that both Israelis and Palestinians truly desire a two-state solution, but are skeptical that it can actually happen, decreasing the likelihood that politicians make risky compromises.

When Arafat was first brought back from Tunisia to head the PLO, the Palestinians called him "The Tunisian."

That was a huge mistake.

Apply some thought here, shall we? The Palestinian attempt to cross the border was an explicit attempt to send massive amounts of terrorists into Israel, to maim, murder and destroy. The Israeli border guard treated it as an invasion, and defended their borders.

ARM disapproves. He wants to let hordes of terrorists cross unimpeded into both Israel and America.

These people were throwing bombs, waving guns... and ARM says it is wrong to shoot them down.

Here in America, we don't have many Palestinian mobs. But we have MS-13 and in fact a great deal of Islamic terrorists being smuggled. ARM says it is bad to defend them, and we should let them in.

You leftists loudly proclaim how much you welcome MS-13 to rape and mutilate. I am glad you support them, ARM. Be proud! You hate America so much you want to import invaders. Ross may dismiss #3, but it remains relevant. #1 is misstated: the leadership was not "mistaken" but calculated carefully that they would benefit from avoiding a deal, by continuing the sob story that induced foreigners to give them $$, and would also protect them against being killed, since the maximum allowable concessions are those not vetoed by the most radical killers. Since the Palestinians still have plenty of the latter, the leadership calculated rationally.

Israeli forces have killed 41 Palestinians and wounded at least 900 in Gaza, health officials said, as troops fired bullets at residents protesting against the Monday opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem.

Tens of thousands turned out across the coastal enclave in what soon became the bloodiest day in Gaza since the 2014 war. Close to 40 of the casualties were critically injured and the dead included a 14-year-old boy, medics said.

The sky along the frontier was blackened with thick smoke as protesters lit tyres. Intermittent sniper fire was heard and crowds of protesters were seen rushing towards the fence.

Lebanon was the name given to the portion assigned to French occupation. Likewise, Syrian was defined and named by the victorious Allies. Europeans gave names to these place derived from Classical antiquity. What is now Iraq was the Ottoman Eyalet of Baghdad. The British and French sliced that Turkish administrative district out of the Sultan Mehmed VI's empire and renamed it Iraq, a word borrowed from Arabic which originally only roughly corresponded to that geographic area. The city and environs of Jerusalem were never independent from the days of the Babylonian conquest in 586 BC until they became part of Israel in 1967. In the meantime, the "Jewish homeland" passed successively under the control of the Persian empire, then the Macedonian (or Alexandrian empire) then the Successor kingdom of the Seleucids, then Ptolemaic Eygpt, then Roman, then Constantinople, then the Caliphate of Baghdad, then the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem (for all intents and purposes an extension of the Norman county of Boulogne), then the functionally independent sultanate of Egypt ruled by the Ayyubid dynasty (though ruling from Cairo the Ayyubids weren't even Arabs, they were Kurdish), then the Ottoman Turks. A few scholars have postulated the theory that Philistia and the Philistines of Biblical notoriety were Achaean Greek Sea Peoples from the Bronze Age city of Pylos. Thus: Pylus = Purosha = Puroshet . . . whence Peleset, who undertook to conquer Egypt in a two pronged invasion, one prong from the sea and one from overland across the Ways of Horus along the Mediterraean Coast of the Sinai. They were repulsed by Pharaoh Ramesses III and his forces and recoiled back into the Levant where they established the so-called Philistine Penatopolis, a confederation of five Philistine cities.

From a monument erected by Ramesses III to commemorate his victory over the Philistines; note his inclusion of Peleset as a component of the enemy invasion force:

'The peoples of the sea . . . made a conspiracy in their islands. All at once the lands were on the move, scattered in war. No country could stand before their arms. Hatti, Kode, Carchemish, Arzawa, and Alashiya. They were cut off. A camp was set up in one place in Amor. They desolated its people and its land was like that which has never come into being. They were advancing on Egypt while the flame was prepared before them. Their league was Peleset, Tjeker, Shekelesh, Denyen, and Weshesh, united lands. They laid their hands upon the lands to the very circuit of the earth, their hearts confident and trusting: “Our plans will succeed.”

@Roughcoat:

I suppose my larger question is, so what?

None of the peculiar semantic history of "Palestine" or "Palestinian" does much to address the actual historical reality of the land. Whatever you want to call it, Palestine was not unpopulated during the First Aliyah of the late 19th century. Do you doubt that the Jews who emigrated to Palestine in the late 19th and early 20th century were large European Jews who had little to no direct familial connection to the land?

My larger point being that you don't have to be on any particular side (Jewish or Arab) to recognize that the events leading up to the creation of the modern State of Israel are morally ambiguous at best. Also, the moral nature of the judgment does not necessarily affect the operative. So, for example, you can easily concede that the Mexican-American War was unjust while simultaneously being unwilling to believe that the Southwest United States should be given back to Mexico.

But of course, recognizing complexity is difficult, and it's always simpler to name one group The Oppressor and another group The Oppressed. If you're on the left, The Oppressed are Palestinians Arabs (Christian and Muslim). If you're on the right, The Oppressed are Israeli Jews forced to live under attack from their neighbors.

It has always been my position that you do not need to have partisan interests in the conflict to recognize its moral and historical complexity.

If you are pro-Israel, then anything that depicts the Israelis negatively is to be interpreted as lies, propaganda, falsifications, unreliable reports, etc. Meanwhile, anything that paints the Palestinians negatively is to be uncritically accepted as the gospel truth and not question. If you are anti-Israel, then the dynamics run in the opposite directions (i.e. negative reports of Palestinians are apologized for, and positive reports of Israelis are denied).Of course, these judgments are made solely based on the groups they attack or vindicate. The actual empirical truths of the claims are of zero consequence, most of the time.

None of the peculiar semantic history of "Palestine" or "Palestinian" does much to address the actual historical reality of the land. Whatever you want to call it, Palestine was not unpopulated during the First Aliyah of the late 19th century.

The land is the land. The history is one of who ruled it in one era as opposed to another.

19th c. "populated" Palestine was a sparsely populated backwater because the Ottomons were in decline and, lo and behold, no nation with as much self-interest in that area was around to tend to it until the Jews returned.

Kind, Christian souls that they were, the British found 130 remaining Samaritans among the population and started a process of protecting their community that continued under Israel to a point of quintupling their dilapidated and sickly rump of a community.

The best evidence points to these "Palestinians" being Arabs who found a home amongst the many deracinated Samritans and remaining Jews - forced as they were to convert from among those religions (or Byzantine Christianity) to Islam under penalty of death following the tyrannical rule of boy-Caliph al Hakim.

An Israeli computer entrepreneur, Tzvi Misinai, postulates that this is the origin of most of the Palestinians, with the Jewish portion being those rural bumpkins who stayed behind following Rome's expulsion - being crucial as they were to maintaining the grain supply and less boisterous and threatening to Rome's rule than the more urbanized Judeans.

Misinai postulates that the many social pathologies of the Palestinians originate in a millennium of having to subsume any natural identity and straightforward feeling in an entire empire's worth of oppressive Arabist Islamic supremacism. They loved the land so much that they were willing to lose any sense of identity to the caliphate's borg.

Until the people who lost the land but retained their identity returned in greater numbers than before.

The solution is to minimize any autonomous lands of theirs in the West Bank as much as possible (while letting them keep Gaza), and assimilate the rest.

This will take a long time and continued states of semi-occupation in most of the area. But it's better than the alternative: a resurgent, never-ending Arabist/Islamist pseudo-nationalism grounded in nothing of actual historical memory and simply to serve the dreams of the pan-Arabists and caliphate revivalists.

It's no agenda that any American (or Western, if it had the clout) power needs to sign on to.

The capital city of a nation requires control over the land where its people reside. Palestinians, are organized as the Palestinian Authority (not a national designation), came mostly as migrants forced to flee Arab-controlled nations. These migrants, run by gangs of terrorists (Hamas and earlier, Hezbollah), cannot provide basic services to the residents of the Gaza Strip. Gaza residents fully depend upon the generosity of Israeli Jews for utilities, healthcare, and especially jobs. And foreign aid in total exceeds the inflated Marshall Plan dollars after more than 60 years.

No, no. That was not the claim. The claim was that Palestinians in Gaza protested expecting to be killed and that they were okay with this death because of a "propaganda move."

Sadly for your position, I have never made such a claim. In fact, my entire worldview is ethno-nationalist, pretty much the opposite of "universal." So, instead of ably dismanting a strawman, you will have to answer my actual question.

Why should I answer a question posed by a man who makes a straw man of the entire world? You might personally be an "ethno-nationalist," whatever the fuck that means - but the world isn't. In fact, nationalism is a rather new phenomenon on the political scene - originating in the Peace of Westphalia a few centuries ago and not gaining momentum until the revolutions of the 19th century. Before that nationhood and nationalism were pretty obscure things. Most of the world was run by empires, kingdoms and often theocracies where religion mattered more than language. Why are you so ignorant of history?

This is what a caliphate was. There wasn't much need for "nationalism" when for 1400 years a somewhat successful model of conquest depended on de-nationalizing all the semitic peoples of the Middle East and subsuming them under the Arabic tongue - even if the Islamic faith was the engine and reason for doing so. What do you think happened to the Assyrians? The Babylonians? ETc.

And your actual response to my question was a YouTube video from at least 4 years ago of "Hamas leaders." So I will ask, if someone queastions "American leaders," should we assume that they are just parroting what you believe, since, after all, they are "American leaders" and you are "American." Lol. Right, he was an outlier. They say it all the time. It's their governing ethos. If you don't believe me, go set foot in that region you've never been in. Watch the media. Read it. Talk with the parents of the kids who are induced to do this and ask them what payments they are regularly offered in exchange. It's not easy to get parents to agree to have one of their large brood carted off for martyrdom. But the payments afterward seem to sweeten the deal, apparently.

You are woefully ignorant of the facts on that ground. Except for one - the most insignificant one. Imaginary ethnographic borders. That's your obsession and it's one shared by many of them over there. But not by those in charge who want to maximize land, minimize neighbors and aren't afraid to live by the tenets of their faith to do so.

But go ahead and keep projecting. It's kind of an insult how much reality you long to reject.

Michael's a tribalist. He'd be a jihadist and a would-be martyr in another era, probably just a few hundred years ago. I remember learning of a 19th c. Tribalism is such a hard thing to abandon that you can witness Michael Special K. falling prey to it right before your very eyes.

The fact that Hamas so easily exploits this, even if under more religious than nationalist constructs, should be hardly surprising. Farmer, has there been any indication that the stated goal of Hamas - the destruction of the Jewish state - has changed over the past 4 years? No, they are about what they have always been about.

And the reason those of us who are pro-Israel doubt Palestinian claims is because they have almost always been proven false- but not before the media have trumpeted the falsehoods around the world. Remember the 2002 Jenin "massacre?" The Beeb and NPR featured interview after interview with Palestinians who claimed lo, the bodies were piled up to the sky! Except they weren't. And the media conveniently omitted that the Palestinian leaders had purposely located their HQ in the middle of a densely populated neighborhood, and that the Israelis used ground forces rather than an air attack to minimize civilian casualties. That led to increased Israeli causalities, since 20 IDF soldiers were killed in booby-trapped buildings. But then details like that are usually omitted by the international media and NGO's.

Doc, Mike, I can't imagine what you found objectionable in Ritmo's posts on the topic. Furthermore, I love that he and J-Farm are going at it. While you're entitled to be apprehensive, every so often, he's both correct and reasonable. It's a pity the two of you can't scrub some history and see each other through fresh eyes.

Would you stand by and watch the destruction of Israel?

Dear Gahrie,

Not while a single marshmallow remained untoasted. If my wit eludes you, yes, absolutely, assuming that watching wouldn't bore him.

J. Farmer,

Realism is what you are seeing.

As for Hagee's reception in Israel and his words being feared by all of the Media, you need to know that Hagee is the Elisha with a double portion of the Spirit of an Elijah who was the first life long pro Israel Christian teacher named Derek Prince. Prince and his wife Lydia stayed in their orphanage home in Jerusalem during the 1947-48 War. He knew it all first hand and he never quit teaching about God's purpose for restoring Israel. He basically ended the American Church's easy anti-semitism by tacit acceptance, that had been the rule through the 1940s. Prince was well known in Israel.

Someone named Frank J. Fleming put it succinctly:

"I think you're always going to have tension in the Middle East when there's people who want to kill the Jews and Jews who don't want to be killed and neither side is willing to compromise."

Holeee moleee.

Watch the Laura Ingraham interview of John Solomon!

All about Comey's FBI (3 agents) visiting Deripaska in New York City (Deripaska was allowed in by the obama admin) with the FBI trying to recruit Deripaska into the Manafort frameup in Sept 2016.

Deripaska laughed them out of the room and the FBI guy were quite insistent that Deripaska help them show Manafort was colluding with Manafort.

Deripaska not only refused again but then the FBI turns around and uses Deripaska as the "bad guy" to try and nail Manafort anyway!

Once again, Stasi-like BS from the deep staters.

The best part of Muellers democrat hack-filled fake investigation?

The Mueller team of hacks never provided ANY of this exculpatory evidence to Manafort's defense team or the courts.

Aaaaaaaannnnnnnd, the info was purposely excluded from any FISA court warrants applications.

Scratch a lefty/liberal/deep stater, find a would-be police-state wannabe.

Of course he would. As would all of the Progressives, the Democratic Party and the Media. They are the party of the Muslims.

langford peel, J. Farmer is an isolationist, not a progressive. (I don't think he's a Jew hater either.) I believe he voted for Trump. He's not a bad guy. I agree with some of his opinions regarding foreign policy, but strongly disagree with him about Israel.

“You know why the Palestinians light tire fires? The thick black toxic smoke gives them a place to hide while they attempt to sneak-in or launch weapons.$”

Kinda like the drone drivers in AZ watching Afghanis engaging in beastiality with their farm animals. Great fun apparently. They figure that because they can’t see anything because it is dark outside, no one can see them. In any case, the Israelis can see through the tire smoke just fine. Tanks, in particular, have vision systems that do so, since they are expected to fight in such conditions. The Israelis apparently used the main gun on one of their tanks to take out a big chunk of the terrorists who tried to cross the fence into their country last month, hidden by the thick smoke. A bit of overkill, of course, but effective. Pictures of Israeli tanks waiting for the expected protests and associated attempts of incursion, so don’t expect such to be successful. Notably, when the Israelis ending up having to take out a dozen or so terrorists last month, they very quickly had photos published of the terrorists, with their training, which martyrs brigade they belonged to etc.
