Moderation woes.

We've been having trouble with moderating comments for a few days. As you may know, if you comment on a post more than 2 days old, it doesn't go up until we approve it. But we haven't been able to get to the moderation page, so whatever is there is just helplessly waiting. Sorry, but I can't do anything about that, at least for now. If this continues, it will mean that on older posts, comments are essentially closed.

We're also unable to get to the spam page, so that means that we can't liberate comments that don't belong there. I know there is at least one regular commenter who has been singled out by the spam filter, and I'm especially sorry about that problem. It's not that we don't care and are not trying to get proper comments out of the spam filter. It's that we can't.

Thank you MeadeHouse for all the effort and work you do to make this the blog a such an enjoyable place to hangout.

I don't know if you are talking about me..but depending on which computer and browser combination I am using, some of my comments are going to the spam folder.

I hope this results in another huffing n' puffing thing-y re changing to that weird website name (was the top choice a Swedish thing?, I dunno).

OTOH, presumably we can't be too excited. Presumably, by now, Althouse realizes that she needs google, not the other way around.

In fact, if that's not obvious to her now, they'll probably just keep ratcheting up the accidental inconveniences until the she and the rest of the yesteryear-ers realize that they're dead weight. Get yurself a Swedish website, and don't let the door hit ya were the dude upstairs split ya.

I know that at some point in the past you decided against moving away from blogger.com, for reasons that I cannot recall (although whatever the other concerns no doubt it would be a troublesome and vexatious process): but surely your readership will fund a move? e.g. via Patreon or some similar platform.

Talking about Darrell.

I cannot extract this blog and move it. It's too big. I'd have to start over. Don't want to do that. The ability to stay connected to the entire archive, with all the tags, is extremely important to me.

It's not about what it would cost, other than that I don't want to have to figure out how to keep the blog from disappearing after I die.

Not planning to die soon, though, so don't view that as morbid.

Also, if I went somewhere else, the other place would have problems too!

I don't know why I should believe that some other company will do better than Google. I put my bet on Google, and I'm hoping for the best.

I'll try to contact somebody there if the problem doesn't clear up.

There was a problem publishing posts a couple months ago and it was a big hassle, but Google was pushing out some improvements (I found out) and the problem ended.

Darrell eh?

I've been missing his witty comments.

Why couldn't - insert you know who - been spammed?

rcocean म्हणाले...

Yes, moderation is a virtue

rcocean म्हणाले...

I assume all your posts are backed up somewhere.

Do you write them in MS Word and then post?

rcocean म्हणाले...

Extremism in banning of trolls is no vice, moderation in the pursuit of Darrell is no virtue.

BTW,

How cool is it that Althouse, sans questioning, accepts that Google is working to improve things for this anachronistic place? That's why things are F-ing up for her. Cause their helping her. They said so.

But, she's quite the little-lady skeptic when folks say that it's bad for the Russians to work to install DJT w/ advertising, bots, full time staff, hacks/leaks of HRC, DJT employees w/ Russia dough connections, and Russia reaching out to DJT folks. That stuff is no big deal.

Cool.

One thing is that Blogger, for all its supposed deficiencies, is probably the best platform for this kind of thing.

WordPress has more problems and deficiencies. And some other purchased platform would probably have a lot of features that are not needed and would only slow down the loading, and they have a worse commenting function (Disqus's block commenter function is useful though).

Blogger is good because it does not have a lot of fancy, trendy bells and whistles. It is instead fairly basic and straightforward, which is perfect for this kind of text-heavy website.

this anachronistic place

Practically every website I've ever been to where they have a "new and improved" revamp only ends up screwing it up and making it worse. Some places have spent lots of $$$$$ only to come out with a crappy website.

cubanbob म्हणाले...

Better the devil you know. Changing to another platform will only be worse.

You should hear us at Meadhouse. Half the time, we're all "Poor Darrell!" or "I just feel bad for Darrell."

I liked it when PowerLineBlog revamped their site but they started to require FB log-in. I’ve not commented there in years now.

To reiterate something I said the other day, the thing about this site is it works without javascript (aside from posting comments). That got me through many days at a job I hated where the only way I could access the site was through text based "lynx".

Also:

"Knock Knock"

"Who's There?"

"Darrell"

"Darrell who?"

"Darrell never be another you."

I was part of a blog that closed down seven years ago, because the chief blogger got busy with other things, and I got tired of writing stuff that nobody seemed to care about. @Althouse: The latter you need have no concerns about, and for that, CONGRATULATIONS! I know nothing about the technical side of blogging, but for what it's worth, I can still visit the old posts and comments on my old site seven years after we stopped posting on it.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

“I liked it when PowerLineBlog revamped their site but they started to require FB log-in.”

That’s very limiting. What if you want to adopt a persona different from your real world self?

Some of the very best commenters here do that.
