Protests trashing stores in South Africa after H&M uses black child to model a shirt inscribed "Coolest Monkey in the Jungle."

Via "H&M Closes Stores in South Africa Amid Protests Over ‘Monkey’ Shirt" (NYT), which quotes Julius Malema, leader of South Africa’s second-largest opposition party, Economic Freedom Fighters: “We make no apology about what the fighters did today against that store called H&M... Every shop that undermines black people must be attended to. It must be shut down. It must be closed... We cannot allow the humiliation of black people to continue... No one should make jokes about the dignity of black people."

Being offended isn't something that's imposed upon you like a bullet or a bat to the head. One must choose t be offended... to take the offense upon themselves. When something offensive is said, there is a choice to become offended or to not become offended.

That doesn't mean whatever wasn't said was kind, or humane, or anything like that. It doesn't excuse the speaker for being cruel, racist, sexist, or any other ist. It just reveales the speaker's character.

To allow yourself to become offended is to give power to the offender.

The coolest monkeys live in S. America.

Capuchins are black, brown, buff or whitish, but their exact color and pattern depends on the species involved. They reach a length of 30 to 56 cm (12 to 22 in), with tails that are just as long as the body. Like all other monkeys, the Capuchins suffered severely from the secularizations and revolutions of the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th; but they survived the strain, and during the latter part of the 19th century rapidly recovered ground. The Capuchins still keep up their missionary work, and with the exception of a midday nap, they spend their entire day searching for food.

This isn’t about monkeys. Last week my nephew posted on Facebook a photo of his two-month-old, blonde-haired son with the caption “I love this little monkey.” I think he got 200 likes. I have to assume that black fathers also call their young sons monkeys as a term of endearment. No, this is about people who are perpetually outraged and constantly looking for something to be outraged about.

Dad was raised in Wisconsin’s northwoods. He’s a sportsman through and through. In middle age, he and mom traveled to Africa a number of times on safari. This is about two things. One, revenue generation by the diversity racket. Two, shopping day for their thugs. Both happen on a regular basis and on demand in America, too. Although, in the Progressive country of South Africa, redistributive and retributive change are a constitutional right, and perhaps rite.

I lived in an African sh*thole for several years and South Africa used to be my oasis - the place my family went when we couldn't take the sh*ttiness of our home any more. A few observations:

- Multiple "colored" South Africans (part-black and part-white/non-black), after a few meetings, told us quietly that they thought things were better under apartheid.
- Some black South Africans told us something similar - along the lines that while the whites treated them badly under apartheid, at least they treated all blacks the same (badly) and weren't corrupt.
- No white South Africans ever told us things were better under apartheid, no matter how well we knew them. Make of that what you will.
- Over multiple years of visiting, we witnessed the apartheid-era and Nelson Mandela-era infrastructure crumble and degrade in front of our eyes.
- As far as I can tell, Nelson Mandela really held things together post-apartheid. He had a wisdom and understanding that few people other than George Washington had at their nation's founding. Unfortunately, he didn't benefit from the "bench" that Washington had, and those that followed Mandela quickly reverted to the African kleptocratic norm.
- After once considering South Africa a possible place to retire, we are now guessing that it's going to be the next Zimbabwe. Zuma is just the tip of the iceberg.

The shitholey part of my city (and it most assuredly is a shithole) is full of people who value family so much that there is next to zero disapproval of irresponsible family making which is one of the hallmarks and greatest perpetuating factors of an American shithole. It's not at all unusual for a girl in her late teens to have a couple of kids. Huge resistance to birth control because apathy and also "We're Catholic; we can't use birth control and we love babies and families!" “I love all the money saving tips being bandied about at the moment as inflation skyrockets. These are probably useful for people who have jobs. Unfortunately the apartheid laws here prevent many white people from getting work of any kind no matter how skilled they might be. Elon Musk for example would probably be sleeping under a bridge if he was still living here. Right now, I am also officially unemployed with absolutely no way of ever getting a job here again as I too am classed as being a white person. At my age (early 60s) this is a slow death sentence.
