One of Althouse's less subtle trolls. But "Welcome back my friend, to the show that never ends!"
But it would be nice to achieve the level of football announcers. They have somehow risen above rooting for a particular team, and become aficionados of the players and the play. Of the strategies that lead to winning, of the brilliant plays that score touchdowns, and the brilliant plays that prevent them. I hope he stays because he is the clown nose on the face of all of the sudden concern over the issue of the "droit du seigneur' of powerful Democrats.
He can start telling us of all the ideas he had for rape skits over the years. We only know two--about raping Leslie Stahl and Boy Rob Reiner being sodomized by Carl and all his showbiz buddies during the Dick Van Dyke heyday. I'm sure he has had hundreds of hilarious rape fantasies.
But maybe he can reached that exalted level of grandmaster perv. The one that "you know who" obtained. The level where every single person knows what you are, so any woman who allows him near them will be considered to have consented. Like anybody who got in an elevator with John Conyers, for example.
Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through old white men to get after Trump?
Yes, I'd cut down every old white man in America to do that!
Oh? And when all the white men are down, and the other SJW's turned 'round on you, where would you hide, the men all being flat? Yes, I'd give Trump benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!
There was a guy who, in essence, resigned himself from the bar over inappropriate sexual behavior. He was in his early sixties, but could pass for ten years younger: full head of hair that he wore in a manner maybe reminiscent of James Dean, and he hadn't gone to fat or stooping. Dressed casual but clean. Polite.
He was mostly known for playing the same four or five songs on the jukebox. Slow dreary songs from the past. They obviously meant something deep to him, but for the ones who did not share his particular memories: slow and dreary. Eric Burdon & The Animals' "San Franciscan Nights" was a constant. I have now heard that song at least three dozen times -- a cautious estimate at that; I never, ever, need to hear it again. As I said: particular memories. Not everyone feels stare-into-space wistful over a particular 'warm San Franciscan night'. From fifty years ago. Or to hear about it in song three dozen times.
He developed a crush on a particular pretty girl at the bar. A lot of people have crushes on her, or at least can't help but stare at her ample cleavage. They would talk on occasion. She is in her early thirties, thirty years younger than him. And has a boyfriend. Whose circle intersects with some rough people. For background.
The occasional talk led to him touching her on the shoulder, the arm; eventually the thigh. He would joke about them running away together, but it really was only a joke if you consider yearning to be a joke. She told him she wasn't comfortable with his touching. he'd stop for a few days, then: a hand on her shoulder, the arm. Then the thigh.
She told him, forcefully, to stay away from her. He then repositioned himself on the other end of the bar, listened to slow, dreary songs from the Sixties and yearned. Oh how he yearned. And played more slow, dreary songs. I think you get the picture. And word went round that the boyfriend was not happy with this situation. The boyfriend whose circle intersects with some rough people
Eventually he went to her and apologized for his behavior. The apology was accompanied by a hand on her shoulder, the arm. Before he could touch her thigh she was yelling at him, and the bartender told him to stay the hell away from her or he'd be kicked out, permanently. He then repositioned himself on the other end of the bar. And yearned.
A few days later he stopped coming into the bar. He had resigned in disgrace. Or at least got out before the boyfriend took matters in his own hands. Rough people, etc etc.
No doubt he is now frequenting another bar, playing slow, dreary songs from the Sixties on the jukebox. Maybe there is a new object of his desires. Maybe he is touching her on on the shoulder, the arm. Then the thigh. Warm San Franciscan Nights and all that.
Blogger tim in vermont said... He was funny on SNL.
Dear Tim,
This being America, for a while longer at least, you are entitled to be terribly, terribly wrong, and you are. Al Franken was never capable of generating other than nervous laughter of the trainwreck kind. When I would watch that show, I would wonder what he was doing there. It was as if he was somebody's relative and had to be carried.
If the Senate wants him out they should go through the correct process to do that, which would be impeachment. Hearings, a chance for his and his accusers to testify under oath, senators having to go on record with their votes yea or nay. He should fight to the end, force them to drag him scratching and screaming from that hallowed chamber. That would be fun to watch.
If Alfranken refuses to step down, wait one week, and list of Senate Democrats calling for him to resign will do the fastest 180 ever recorded in history. Two faced people have no morals.
Too bad for the colored guy resigning because of the allegations against him. At least he was a playa.
Yes, "their own purpose" is to keep from being called a hypocrite. They clamor against Roy Moore, and 88 year old John Conyers; if they don't hound Franken to resign, they'd be subjected to the H-word.
Franken should resist the "gang rape" of his fellow Democratic senators and NOT resign.
If only he were a Republican he could deny all this claiming the women were liars and still run for president. Now that would be funny ironic delivered almost as good as the one delivered by the great entertainer he might challenge.
Gerry Studds, who had actually buggered a 17-year-old page, indignantly defied his House censure and proudly stood for re-election. His outraged Massachusetts constituents elected him six more times. Washington Post columnist Colman McCarthy denounced the "witch hunt" against Studds, saying his critics wanted "to torch the congressman for his private life."
When Studds died in 2006, The Washington Post's headline on his obituary was: Gerry Studds; Gay Pioneer in Congress. The New York Times' headline was, Gerry Studds Dies at 69; First Openly Gay Congressman.
"roesch/voltaire said... If only he were a Republican he could deny all this claiming the women were liars and still run for president. Now that would be funny ironic delivered almost as good as the one delivered by the great entertainer he might challenge"
I love how these dumbfucks pretend Bill Clinton or his fat fucking crook of a wife never existed.
There’s no downside for any one of these gutless Ds. The D governor of MN will appoint another D loon to take Franken’s place. No political price is being paid by any one of these Democrats, or by the D party. Not one of them is taking a stand on principle.
>Al Franken was never capable of generating other than nervous laughter of the trainwreck kind.
I remember one funny Franken and Davis sketch about two Hare Krishnas that got into a fistfight. It was funny.
As I said before, the target here is Trump, not Franken. Which also explains all the "Clinton should have resigned" talk. Why is it important to say that now, and not last year, or next year? About 10% of Congress just voted to move forward with impeachment, based on nothing other than "we wanted Hillary". It's not a true conspiracy, but everybody knows what to do to advance the cause, and they are doing it...
I wonder how adamant the Dems would be if one of the offending Senators was likely to be replaced by a Republican. Not very, is my guess. They're throwing Franken under the bus because it will look bad if they only boot the black guy.
I wonder how adamant the Dems would be if one of the offending Senators was likely to be replaced by a Republican. Not very, is my guess.
No need to guess. Menendez, Lolita Express. Silence of the trolls. If Inga really cared about politicians and underage girls, she would be all over that one. Silence. No need to guess.
Wasn't Barney Frank's boyfriend running a gay brothel out of the congressman's home? Sorry, I just don't think the Dems are suddenly allergic to double standards. They're scurrying because a light came on.
It's 9 am in Washington DC and the universe is waiting impatiently for Alfranken's morning speech. How long will he talk? A lengthy non-apology apology?
Pragmatic, not moral. But it still paves the way for a historic democratic wave. The tables have turned from where they were 20 years ago. Back then, Dems were hanging onto power and were willing to keep their head in the sand with Clinton.
Now the R’s desperate to hang onto power and get something done are excusing the likes of Trump and Moore. They are going to be out of power for many many years. This stink will no go away easily.
Until the corrupt leftwing democrat machine tosses the Clinton Crime Family, and anyone related to the Clitnon Crime family, overboard - it's all bunk.
The Clinton Crime Family is a large part of why democrats are thought of as corrupt.
As usual, MPH parrots the Official Party Line (TM), as usual, written on flash paper to prevent congestion of the memory hole. Tune in next week for the New, Official, Never-To-Be-Repudiated, Party Line (patent pending).
"john said... Franken had to get fucked by a gorilla to get where he is today. He's not going to relinquish his hard-earned position by passive resignation now."
That wasn't Franken. That was Paul Gleason as Clarence Beeks.
"a historic democratic wave." Quite possibly. But Dems managed to screw up the opportunity they had in 2016, picking the one candidate who could not adequately exploit their appeal to women. They may find something and someone else.
Since the culture war is now turning into a gender war, the size of the wave will come down to white married women: will they cast their secret ballot for #metoo table-turning all-men-are-pigs prog score-settling, or will they stand in solidarity with their vilified fathers, husbands, and sons?
"Now the R’s desperate to hang onto power and get something done are excusing the likes of Trump and Moore." Not excusing anything. We are trying to get something done. I'll trade you Trump for Clinton; you covered for him when you needed him, we will do the same. Unlike you, I'm honest about it. Come back and talk when you get rid of a Democrat that will actually cost you a Senate seat.
I agree that Franken shouldn't _have_ to resign; the allegations against him show him to be a slimeball, but they don't rise to the level of some of the others. But I really would quit if I were him. What's he going to be doing in the Senate from now on? Can't live like that.
I saw Kirsten Gillibrand saying she feels strongly about this and "Enough is enough." Who the hell is she to make such a pronouncement? What about the Minnesota voters? Franken is their guy, it should be up to them. Or at the very least follow Senate procedures and hold a vote.
"Enough is enough" "I feel strongly" Screw that. What wouldn't Gillibrand and the Progs do on the basis of enough is enough and they feel strongly?
Franken shouldn't resign because of these allegations. They're not that serious, they're unproven and probably unprovable, and they're old. We're just encouraging baseless character attacks when we hold someone's feet to the fire for them.
Having said that, I'm so, so glad he's leaving. He's a horrid little a-hole who never deserved to "win", he's a bully unless you're one of his Dem buddies, he's rude to whomever he disagrees with, he believes that his chosen ends justify whatever means he can come up with . . . in short, Yay! He's gone! Jerk.
roesch/voltaire said... "If only he were a Republican he could deny all this claiming the women were liars and still run for president. Now that would be funny ironic delivered almost as good as the one delivered by the great entertainer he might challenge."
"Enough is enough" and "I feel strongly" were the same justifications they used for telling the women who were mistreated by Bill Clinton to shut up back in the 90's.
Faulty memory is very common -- more common than accurate memory, and very susceptible to unconscious "editing". Human memory is all too often a tool to reshape the past to fit our present desires.
Has anyone Democrat called for Senator Menendez of NJ to resign? No, Inga, because Republican Governor and double standards, not because there is no evidence of pederasty, along with all of the other corruption, but there was a hung jury, so he's pure as the driven snow!
Franken shouldn't resign, he should face the voter in the next election. If he's hell bent on resigning, he should stipulate he will do so if all the members who the taxpayers money was used in settlements are exposed. Otherwise this whole process is nothing but virtue signaling and hypocrisy, bull shit.
After reading the allegations against him, Menendez should resign.
Now will we hear you calling for the resignations of Trump and Farenthold? What of Moore, why are you still supporting him? He has allegations of sexual molestation of a 14 year old.
Moore, Trump and Menendez all have been accused of sexual misconduct with underage girls.
I remember him as Stuart Smalley and in a Weekend Update sketch where he was a reporter in the desert with a giant satellite dish on his back. He may have been in other things but in the things that I do remember him in, I didn’t find him particularly funny.
One anonymous internet commenter, whose news consumption is so carefully curated by the left she didn't even know about Menendez, doesn't absolve the Democrat Party of rank hypocrisy on this issue.
Does it cause you to question any other narratives you are being fed? Of course not
“Does it cause you to question any other narratives you are being fed? Of course not”
There are many aspects of the Mueller investigation that you did not seem to be aware of. Are you going to question the narratives your rightist publications provide to you? I doubt it. The Trump Russia investigations and its results are a lot more important to the well being of the US than the corruption and sexual misconduct of Menendez. Trump is the President.
Because allegations in and of themselves aren’t enough (Menendez was/is actually on trial for a separate corruption matter). Franken was dumb enough to take a picture of himself engaged in wrongdoing much like Gary Hart in his infamous “Monkey Business” photo that destroyed his presidential campaign. If Franken had denied the allegations instead of his wishy-washy response and there wasn’t actual evidence, I could see Democrats defending him on the grounds that it was “he said, she said” instead of demanding his resignation. Those who defend Moore and Trump (I’m not and I won’t) can at least hang their hats on that.
Al Franken has never been funny, except once when he did the SNL "Me decade" sketch.
If he'd been funny, he would've been on camera more.
But someone will find a comedian funny - no matter how bad. Millions thought Ishtar was the funniest movie ever. Others thought Charles Rocket was hilarious, and still others wondered why Lorraine Newman wasn't given more air time over Gilda Radner.
If Inga accuses Quackster of molesting farm animals ( not a stretch, the corn fields are deep and hold many secrets) will he cease posting comments on the Althouse blog?
Please give me the strongest piece of evidence that there was collusion between Trump and Russia Inga, The one strong piece on which the whole argument stands. Or two ore three pieces of evidence. In your own words
As much as I dislike Al Franken and as much as I find his conduct abhorrent, I do not believe Franken should resign. I think this sets a very bad precedent. It is both extra-judicial and faux-political.
It is extra-judicial because Franken has not been charged with a crime nor is he under investigation for .committing one.
It is faux-political because there are two other, legitimate, ways to remove Franken. One, the most important, is that he can (and should) be removed from office by the electorate in a general election.
Two, he can be removed under the Constitution, and with due process, by impeachment.
Instead, what is happening to Franken is vigilante justice. As much as I will enjoy the outcome, I hate the process.
For those of you who are fans of the Mueller investigation, here is a great old piece from Mother Jones about Terry McAullife and his corrupt business dealings and how he got rich off of his friendship with the Clintons. Remember that this is the guy who gave three quarters of a million dollars to the wife of the guy in charge of the investigation of Hillary's server.
People say that the Clintons are gone, but their rot still permeates the Democratic Party.
In 1996, the New York Daily News fired reporter David Eisenstadt after he wrote an unfavorable story about McAuliffe potentially having connections to notorious fundraiser John Huang, who in 1999 pleaded guilty to felony charges for arranging more than $150,000 in illegal campaign contributions to the Democratic Party. McAuliffe later gloated to the Washington Post about having called paper owner Mort Zuckerman to get Eisenstadt canned.. - Mother Jones
What did Clinton do for Huang? Why he put a trillion dollars worth of coal that was in direct competition with Huang's coal off limits by declaring the Grand Escalier national monument, which Trump just undid, bless his fucking heart!
McAullife, who raped Global Crossing like it was Enron, never even gets a mention in the Global Crossing Wikipedia page. I guess I could add it, but it would be deleted within an hour, probably by somebody at the Clinton Foundation.
Probably because there is no actual evidence of collusion with Russia. Certainly nothing on the scale of giving 10 million dollars to Fusion GPS, mis-reporting it as "legal expenses" when it was political work paid to a foreign person, who then used some of that ten million dollars to pay for a phone dossier from a Putin spy. Do you have anything like that?
Do you have anything half that strong? Or is it just Hillary's word we are taking here. Hillary who paid for the dossier?
It is faux-political because there are two other, legitimate, ways to remove Franken. One, the most important, is that he can (and should) be removed from office by the electorate in a general election.
Two, he can be removed under the Constitution, and with due process, by impeachment.
The process you’re thinking of is expulsion not impeachment. And in most cases where a member of Congress has faced a vote of expulsion from their House, they resign before it comes to a vote. That's long been an acceptable way for someone to bow out and try to save face.

Not really, nobody actually you know, likes him.
The #metoo stuff is comedy gold. He's a comedian. Go to it.
PC is not a funny dialect, as Wm. Kerrigan put it. Avoid PC and go for it.
Agree. Make Keith X. run in the primary. Franken could then expose Ellison for the nut and anti-Semite that he is.

He was funny on SNL, but the election results that began his Senate career were highly suspect.
Of course Bill CLinton's behavior preceded him i EVERY ONE of his elections. AR AG. AR Guv. And twice for President. Didn't stop Democrats.
I wonder how adamant the Dems would be if one of the offending Senators was likely to be replaced by a Republican. Not very, is my guess.

I hope he stays because he is the clown nose on the face of all of the sudden concern over the issue of the "droit du seigneur' of powerful Democrats.

Yes - because Comey was to blame for Hillary's loss, but Trump was not allowed to fire Comey. obstruction of Justice, or something.
I recently watched the PBS American Masters biography of Bob Hope. It included a short discussion of his constant philandering.
If Hope still were alive, he sure would be subjected to lots of sexual-harassment accusations.

Is that Minnesota time? or Swamp time?
I saw Kirsten Gillibrand saying she feels strongly about this and "Enough is enough."
Who the hell is she to make such a pronouncement?
He's gone! Jerk.

You mean, "serve out the terms they were elected to a year ago" maybe?
Back then, Dems were hanging onto power and were willing to keep their head in the sand with Clinton.
If Hillary had been elected, the Dems would have continuted to keep their head in the sand. The stink would have stayed.
I don't know, Meade. Here's where I got the info --

My 3rd attempt.
Here goes #4
"Enough is enough" and "I feel strongly" were the same justifications they used for telling the women who were mistreated by Bill Clinton to shut up back in the 90's.
Thanks, Allen. From that link: UPDATE: Franken's announcement on the Senate floor will be at 10:45 a.m. Central time, his office says.
Has any Republican called for the resignation of Blake Farenthold yet?
Franken shouldn't resign. He's no worse than every other fucking Democrat. Unless they all want to resign--I'll support that.

Have eight women come forward? Has twenty years passed?
Dullard.
I hear that Al is still groping for a decision ...
Oh. Nevermind
Faulty memory is very common -- more common than accurate memory, and very susceptible to unconscious "editing". Human memory is all too often a tool to reshape the past to fit our present desires.

He likes vests - perhaps for his announcement he will wear one filled with Semtex.
But I'll be satisfied with a smarmy, sarcasm-dripping fauxpology and him staying. Let that rotting corpse be draped about the Dems' necks.
Has any Republican called for the resignation of Blake Farenthold yet?
Hysterical hypocrisy is not called for at this time. Unlike Democrats, Republicans do better without it.
Don't resign. Permit due process. Lift the veil. Repent and sin no more.
Has anyone Democrat called for Senator Menendez of NJ to resign? No, Inga, because Republican Governor and double standards, not because there is no evidence of pederasty, along with all of the other corruption, but there was a hung jury, so he's pure as the driven snow!
re: lift the veil
Be part of the solution, not the problem.
“Hysterical hypocrisy is not called for at this time. Unlike Democrats, Republicans do better without it.”
Stone cold calculating hypocrisy however is done well by Republicans.
Farenthold
Moore
Trump
Franken shouldn't resign, he should face the voter in the next election. If he's hell bent on resigning, he should stipulate he will do so if all the members who the taxpayers money was used in settlements are exposed. Otherwise this whole process is nothing but virtue signaling and hypocrisy, bull shit.
“Has anyone Democrat called for Senator Menendez of NJ to resign?”
What has Menendez been accused of? Link please. I haven’t heard a word about him, except references to him here.

Sheesh, you are ignorant.
Google Image any of the Dems calling for Franken to resign name and "Bill Clinton and see how many smiling photos you'll find.
Here, let's start with Kirsten Gillibrand Bill Clinton:

Blake Farenthold is one of those people. Are you calling for his resignation?

brylun 12/7/17, 8:24 AM comment wasn't enough?
Dullard.
“He's just a sitting US Senator who was charged and tried for corruption. Nothing to see there...”
Sexual allegations, you idiot.
Day in court for the accused and the accusers is maybe the only way forward. I don't know.

Don't worry, you are getting all of the news without any bias! You could try Google.
Lolita Express.
Notice how Inga doesn't give a shit about corruption.
"Inga said...

brylun posts a link called "What about Senator Menendez and his underage hookers" and I point it out to you, and you are still asking for links?
Dullard.
“Notice how Inga doesn't give a shit about corruption.”
I notice how Tim doesn’t care about the many allegations of corruption by Trump.
He was funny on SNL. Let's not get carried away.
Of course not
Name one in particular, Inga. Just one so we can discuss it.
"Underage hooker" is a terrible term. "Sex slave" is more appropriate.
If Quaestor accuses Inga of molesting little boys, will she cease posting comments on the Althouse blog?
"Underage hooker" is a terrible term. "Sex slave" is more appropriate.
"Barely illegal" is a specialized fetish worth analyzing too.
Klavan says when a child actress is said to have come of age, it means she's going to take her shirt off.
"Inga said...

Give me three years, like you just took with Menendez. Or twenty years, like you took with Clinton. Or 48 years, like Ted "Burial at Sea" Kennedy.
For the record, Quaestor has never falsely accused anyone of molesting little boys.
The important question is when did Inga stop molesting little boys?
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, is it not, Inga?
For the record, I'm not that easy.
Franken's announcement has been delayed because they are waiting for new poll results on the election to fill Alabama's Senate seat.
“For the record, Quaestor has never falsely accused anyone of molesting little boys.
The important question is when did Inga stop molesting little boys?”
The important question is when will Quackster stop being an apologist for child molesters?
I’m not copying you, BTW, I’m just using your own tactics against you.
You have to give Al credit. He invented a new "right" or law. Droit de second rate comedian.
Inga wrote: I’m not copying you, BTW, I’m just using your own tactics against you.
Normal and high-functioning brains disagree.
Shall we put it to a vote?
“Normal and high-functioning brains disagree.”
Normal and high functioning brains? Like the ones you covet, sitting on your shelf instead of in your cranium?

Instead, what is happening to Franken is vigilante justice. As much as I will enjoy the outcome, I hate the process.
And if this is allowed to occur, the process will have been normalized for use elsewhere.
For those of you who are fans of the Mueller investigation, here is a great old piece from Mother Jones about Terry McAullife and his corrupt business dealings and how he got rich off of his friendship with the Clintons. Remember that this is the guy who gave three quarters of a million dollars to the wife of the guy in charge of the investigation of Hillary's server.
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/11/terry-mcauliffe-governor-virginia/#
“Two, he can be removed under the Constitution, and with due process, by impeachment.”
Yes, true. So can Trump who has 16 allegations against him, one which is still being litigated.
McAullife, who raped Global Crossing like it was Enron, never even gets a mention in the Global Crossing Wikipedia page. I guess I could add it, but it would be deleted within an hour, probably by somebody at the Clinton Foundation.
So that's a no then, Inga.
HOLY FUCK, ALFRANKEN SAID HE IS RESIGNING!
He stole the seat anyway. Good. Stealing that seat, and getting a pass on it is probably what emboldened him so.

Yeah, he just said some are liars, some are mistaken, he is innocent. Then went on th imply all of Trump and Moore's accusers are telling the truth.
So, don't believe my accusers. Do believe the other guys accusers.
Sad faces, subdued tone on MSNBC.
Bright eyes on Fox.

The process you’re thinking of is expulsion not impeachment. And in most cases where a member of Congress has faced a vote of expulsion from their House, they resign before it comes to a vote. That's long been an acceptable way for someone to bow out and try to save face.
He did not resign. He said he intends to resign over the coming weeks.
He can still vote and he can still change his mind.
If only he were Bill Clinton he could deny all this claiming the women were liars and still run for president. R/V
