"All of us, including me, are coming to a newer and deeper recognition of the pain caused by conduct in the past, and have come to a profound new respect for women and their lives."

First-class bullshit from Charlie Rose.

All these purgative statements summarized,

"I am so sorry,

THAT I GOT CAUGHT AND THAT I'M BEING CALLED OUT!"

Ha, from your Charlie Rose tag, 2013

RUSH: Here's Charlie Rose. And listen to Charlie. He had to wrap up the interview with the women on his show today with Gayle King, and they were talking about the new feminism. Here's what Charlie Rose said that men have to do.

ROSE: It is incumbent on men to appreciate more and to do more and have the same responsibilities that women do.

RUSH: I just sit here, my mouth just falls open. Will you play that again? It is up to men to understand more, to do more, to explain more, to say more, to feel more, to touch more, to be more, to be fully respected and understood so that women will go to bed with us, is what he means.

Jaq म्हणाले...

The thing about Charlie Rose is that there are probably a shit ton of hot 40. year old women who would have been proud to go out with him, and take care of his needs. Tons of them. It's about something different than sex. Maybe it's whatever that line in Moonstrck was about being afraid of death.

I don't believe that the average man thinks that just because a female employee or co-worker is nice to him, that it means she wants to see him naked/get groped by him/have sex with him. Is there some ego thing going on with people who seek jobs where they get a lot of public attention that makes them mistake politeness for lust?

rhhardin म्हणाले...

It's all fake, not only the apologies. The apologies happen within a larger fakeness of the whole hysteria.

The idea that the scandal is real and the apology is fake misses everything.

Curtiss म्हणाले...

After reading his odd and meaningless statement, I began aiming my thoughts at the impurity of Charlie Rose.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

What's common to the celebrities and famous is that lots of women throw themselves at them. They get temptations that the average guy does not, so the average guy is a lot more likely to be a gentleman in real life than the celebrity.

The hysteria is about a tendency that almost every man controls that the sorely tempted men do not. Not really about the sorely tempted men but all men, which is how every woman relates to it and it's great ratings. Hence its persistence.

But also its damage. The millions of untempted men see it as about them, for having tendencies that they nevertheless control.

Hence a probable fuck-you reaction from those men.

Lecture first, then a lame kinda apology When will they ever learn?

It's too bad, I kinda liked his interview show. He was too clever by half in most of his remarks, however even though you could see it was a struggle, he did let his guests give long form answers.

"Is there some ego thing going on with people who seek jobs where they get a lot of public attention that makes them mistake politeness for lust?"

Probably. Or, over time, all the attention paid to these men, all the money and social privileges they accrue due to their prominence, success, and visibility, warps their perception of appropriate behavioral limits. They come to believe all they want they should--and will--have, even if by offensive means.

Supposedly it was Erol Flynn who said he didn't pay prostitutes for sex, he paid them to go away when they were done.

Mother of God, that is some terrible bullshit. Quality bullshit recognizes the wrong while disclaiming responsibility. This is an example of quality bullshit:

Mr. Lippman: "I'm going to get right to the point. It has come to my attention that you and the cleaning woman have engaged in sexual intercourse on the desk in your office. Is that correct?"
George: "Who said that?"
Mr. Lippman: "She did."
George: (pauses for a few seconds) "Was that wrong? Should I have not done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing was frowned upon, you know, ‘cause I've worked in a lot of offices and I tell you people do that all the time."

Rose should have had the decency to bullshit well. He can learn a lot from George Costanza.

David Begley म्हणाले...

But the "profound new respect" is a tell of sorts.

LakeLevel म्हणाले...

About 15 years ago, I thought he had a great show. In retrospect, it was all style, having great guests and letting those guests talk. The dark background, heavily echo muted background noise and Charlie's great voice were unique at the time. Also he had the only show where people could tell a whole story or an entire idea and his only questions he asked in these was basically "tell me more about that". Other than his voice, there is nothing particularly appealing about Charlie Rose. For some reason, about 10 years ago, I never watched anything he did again.

Jay Vogt म्हणाले...

a genuine apology (which sounds even better if you happen to mean it goes something like thIs:

MOMENT OF RESPECTFUL SILENCE AND PERSONAL CONNECTION.

"I am sorry for ___________( insert terse specific transgression). I did that, and that was all on me. It came from a part of me that I'm ashamed of, because I let my ______________ (insert one of the seven deadly sins here) take control of my actions. I'm diminished by that. And, sought to diminish you. If i can think of way to partially right that wrong, I'm going to, regardless of your notice.

I'm going to try to listen to my better angels in the future, and I would be grateful if you would give me a chance to show you that because I think you are terrific and it will be my loss I can't repair our relationship."

Looking at percentages, I would imagine asshole celebrities no worse than general population assholes.

Assholes in high school taking date to drive in movie had a saying "Put out or get out". Of course, they were probably lying.

These type of guys are the same ones who became men who would have no qualms bruising up a woman to "show her what it feels like". Like Chuck.

I would just like to thank the Democrats again for offering such a fine alternative to Trump. Think about how much you loathe Trump, That's how much a large tranche of America loathed Clinton. We told you guys that for years. You ran her anyway. That's how you got Trump.

The standard Left-wing non-apology "apology". Apologize for everything but admit nothing specific. Charlie Rose, Al Franken, and the NYT guy all seem to have the same lawyer.

We see now why "Charlie" was such an "advocate" for women. Must be nice being "the King" surrounded by your submissive female staff that may watch you "shower" once and a while.

In moments like these, tempted to gloat in the now-publicized moral failings of so many, I recall Jonathan Edwards and his humbling words on grace and the state of those outside it: "You probably are not sensible of this; you find you are kept out of hell, but do not see the hand of God in it; but look at other things, as the good state of your bodily constitution, your care of your own life, and the means you use for your own preservation. But indeed these things are nothing; if God should withdraw his hand, they would avail no more to keep you from falling, than the thin air to hold up a person that is suspended in it."

I used to enjoy his PBS show, it was nice to have a longer form interview than what we are normally exposed to. I don't know if men not respecting women is the issue. It sounds nice, but I doubt it is a lack of respect for women specifically that lead some of these men to act the way they do. I think it is closer to they just don't know any better.

Now there could be something to say that men lack a certain amount of empathy when it comes to these situations. My guess is that lots of men just don't understand how uncomfortable some women are with the situations the men put them in. I think that is closer to what we saw with Louis CK and with Charlie Rose. Probably the same with Al Franken.

The Vault Dweller म्हणाले...

"Yes. Shaming the good girls who resisted "casting couch" relationships, the "wait until marriage" women, was all the liberal rage not three decades ago."

I suspect that a good amount of the virtues of chastity and gentlemanly courtship are missed now. And I suspect that some a realizing that that this virtues weren't some arbirtary fiat dictated to protect men's ownership interest in women blah blah whatever nonsense some people cooked up. Something tells me lots of people are going to realize that old fashioned values and traditions became traditions because they worked, more often than not. Men and women do have different expectations in regards to sex and relationships. While this isn't universal it is probably widespread enough that it should be considered the default way of things unless the two people involved agree otherwise.

2) What makes you think that Norah O'Donnell wasn't a recipient of his advances...if not a beneficiary of the same.
