"Actor Anthony Rapp: Kevin Spacey Made A Sexual Advance Toward Me When I Was 14."

Rapp speaks now — after 30 years — "not to simply air a grievance... but to try to shine another light on the decades of behavior that have been allowed to continue because many people, including myself, being silent. … I'm feeling really awake to the moment that we're living in, and I'm hopeful that this can make a difference."

Spacey says he can't remember — after 30 years — but he remembers enough (or respects Rapp enough) to allow that it could have happened:
But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.... This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are other stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy.... I now choose to live as a gay man.
As far as I've noticed over the decades, people were assuming Spacey is gay. Coming out as gay now, when confronted with behavior aimed at a 14 year old, is unfortunate. He's publicly identifying with a group at the point where there's something negative about his membership in it. It would have been better to come out when his fortunes were high and to add to the luster of the people you say are yours.

From the time I saw American Beauty, which apparently was supposed to be some sort of indictment against middle America, I thought it was more of an indictment of Hollywood degradation and a certain cultural "sophistication." Spacey gave me the creeps then, and he gives me the creeps now.

Althouse, do you think homosexuality needs to be "protected" from uncomplimentary stories and inferences about it's practitioners? Must abnormal sex be celebrated and respected at all costs? Why is that deviant lifestyle so vulnerable to bad press?

Odd use of "if". Yes, "if" you did something wrongful, then you would owe an apology - isn't much of an apology. A conditional apology?

Well of course the retired Marine was a wife beater and closeted homosexual who killed someone in an attempt to hide his gayness. We all know that is everyday life in the 'burbs.

Spacey always struck me as a bit off in the sexuality department, but I think that's a combination of his "creepy-on-demand" acting persona, and the fact that I can't ever recall hearing about a wife or girlfriend for him. I don't follow celebrity much, but to some degree it's hard to totally avoid. For example, I know of other celebs of his general category who are married or dating or have been married or dating, but Spacey never showed on the radar.

Now, of course, comes the fact that he's heretically "choosing" to be a gay man. So now being gay is a choice? Who'da thought? He's gonna have some 'splainin to do, I think.

It is odd. Pretty much anytime one gets around a group of gay men, they will freely admit their preference for young boys. I visited the Pride event in the Twin Cities, and there was a booth with posters for sale that described this. But straight people seem to want to sweep this under the rug. "Oh, we don't talk about it, because that would just encourage the haters...."

It also seems like people are a little afraid to criticize gay people for transgressions like this. Vagina Monologues, etc.

BTW, this is the story that made me realize Spacey is gay:

Hollywood star Kevin Spacey has been brutally mugged in a London park.

The OSCAR-winner told police he was attacked and his mobile phone was stolen while he walked his dog in south London's GERALDINE MARY HARMSWORTH PARK at 4.30am on Saturday (17APR04).

But Spacey - who was treated in hospital for a minor head injury - stunned police by returning to the station where he reported the crime, to withdraw his claim.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson says, "He had a head injury and said he'd been robbed of his phone.

"But he returned and withdrew the theft allegation. As far as police are concerned, there's no crime to investigate."

The park, close to the OLD VIC THEATRE where Spacey is artistic director, is not a known danger spot.

So for years one of the things that those who oppose homosexuality as a lifestyle liked to throw out was that it was rooted in pedophilia. Gay men shouldn't be left alone with young boys. Ummm. You can call it "gay". Hell you can call it "exuberant", for all I care. "Wildly ecstatic". But just as a matter of definition, homosexuality is a perversion.

This terminology arises from the idea that there is a purpose to sex, which is not served by homosexual practices. I suppose that logic is archaic. When it was generally believed, or at least publicly asserted, that humans had a creator, the purpose of sex was evident. Evolution is not purposive, but I resist the debasement of the language. When men make sexual advances to underage (but fertile) girls, that is illegal, and immoral, but it's not perverted. And when two men have sex, they may be "married", but it's still perverse.

Harvey Weinstein reacts to the outcry: Yeah, I've sinned - now let me redeem myself by really taking it to the NRA, and using my huge influence to take down Donald Trump! Who's with me? [Expects stirring music and applause, gets crickets.]

Kevin Spacey: Gosh, I don't remember but if I did do it, I'm really sorry. Hey, I know I've been really private all these years, but - I'm gay. [Waits for applause and support.]

[A few people: Kevin, we love you! Many, many more people, straight, gay, left, right: Wow, that is really transparent and pathetic. Nice try.]

Thirty years later to reveal an incident where Spacey desisted once Mr. Rapp told him he was not interested!

I was approached a few times by gay men when I was young, once by a very large military officer who could have overpowered me with no trouble whatsoever. He touched me and repeated touching me, but once I shook my initial fear and confusion and told him I was not interested, he stopped. The incident bothered me for a while, but I chose not to report it to anyone in authority. Looking back after all these years, I have respect for this guy who, at the moment of decision, treated me with respect.

Thorley Winston म्हणाले...

It goes without saying that this statement was vetted if not written by his lawyer and/or publicist. No doubt that when they wrote it, they suspected that just like with the first woman to come forth against Bill Cosby, Rapp may be only the first to step forward and some of the others may be making allegations that won’t be outside the statute of limitations for criminal prosecution and/or civil liability. Spacey’s basically trying to generate sympathy with “I had a drinking problem” and “I was in denial about who I am” in the hopes of buying time or making them more reluctant to come forth (or possibly agree to settle quickly, quietly and cheaply).

Static Ping म्हणाले...

It's pretty obvious that the "I'm gay" revelation, or should I say "revelation," is an intentional distraction in the hopes that "journalists" will be fooled to focus on the gay part as opposed to the sexual predator part. From early indications, it is working.

At this point I am not sure if I should go with Ben Rhodes observation that journalists in general are dumb and basically know nothing about anything so they are easily duped, or if they are more comparable to the sheep in Animal Farm. The fact that this is the purview of entertainment journalists should make it all the more stupid.

To an extent. But the 30 year wait is what gets me. If it were a forcible rape it should be exposed at any time. But for a clumsy rejected pass that involved physical touch, I find it disturbing that someone choses to publicize this after 30 years. They are all usually about 20 and look five years younger. Right now, this is prime virtue signaling as it is a statement that says nothing and means nothing, but Netflix hopes you do not notice.
