In the aftermath of the storm....

... please feel free to talk about anything.

Are you watching Manhunt: Unabomber? If you haven't been following, it's likely available free on demand from your cable provider.

The focus is how the language used by Ted Kaczynski was a key element in helping track him down and get the warrant to search his home, when they had no other evidence linking him to the crime.

They even included how Kaczynski used the phrase "eat your cake and have it too", which the FBI agents initially believed was incorrect but later learned was the original usage.

I can't help but think Althouse would have been a great member of their team.

The storm has overwritten a lot of other news stories. It's 16th year 9-11 anniversary. Steve Bannon's 60 minutes interview. Chinese Banks suspending North Korean Transactions. Equifax getting sued for 70 billion...

I missed the Bannon interview and kick myself for forgetting.

The rocky Highlands of Scotland laugh at storms. Scotsmen do too.

Also, the visit of the Saudi crown prince to Israel is a huge development.

Every spring in Alaska, they celebrate the spring breakup of the ice jam in the Tenaya River.

This may be the ice jam in the Middle East breaking up.

You know how I know that is not a Bob Ross painting?

Not one happy little tree 🌲

In keeping with the artistic theme, I also recommend Caspar David Friedrich's Monk by the Sea. I have a full size reproduction in my dining room, so I sit with it a lot.

The Wall Street Journal has an article stuck behind a paywall, but the first paragraph is interesting!

Did Hitler paint that?

I kind of stumbled on it and have enjoyed it immensely . Well acted by most (the lead guy is a bit stiff, but that could be because he plays a "gotta think like the perp" character)

One thing I noticed (on my Dish Network Hopper) is that their Discovery 'On Demand' version is almost commercial free. So even though I had the original series in my DVR, I opted to DL the On Demand version.

His sister in law and his brother cracked the case, right? FBI got the credit?

Steve Bannon interview on 60 Minutes. I believe the entire interview on cbsnews.com:

Equifax getting sued for 70 billion...

If they win, lawyers will get $69,999,000.00 and the remaining million will be split 180 million ways, and then we will all end up paying more for credit somehow. Lawyers can be the scum of the earth, and often are.

The way Google is censoring search results bothers me. I wonder if this is happening to Althouse? I am noticing more of this, so I have changed my default search engine to DuckDuckGo.

And if this becomes known enough, is the Trump Justice Department going to do anything about it?

From Instapundit:

POWERLINE: Almost Blacklisted By Google. “Even if Google owes nothing to your publications, it certainly owes good faith to the users of its search. Intentionally hiding conservative and/or libertarian websites from the customers is an obvious breach of good faith.”

If the GOP were like the Democrats, a bunch of State AG’s would be investigating this. But, even though there are now many more Republican AG’s, that’s not happening.

If it weren't for that fucking hurricane today everything would be about Hillary!

There are four main search engine databases:

Search engine Market share in March 2017
Google 80.52%

Bing 6.92%

Baidu 5.94%

Yahoo! 5.35%

The nice thing about DuckDuckGo is that it forgets who you are immediately, which is a good enough reason to use it. I use google maybe once every couple of weeks now, and I search a lot. Most of the search providers, like DuckDuckGo uses some of these engines. But not Google, I don't think.

Also DuckDuckGo has a "!Bang" feature, which I think you can use to create a way to search only specific sites. Somebody should make one. Once a !Bang is made, any user of DuckDuckGo can use it.

Make one for Althouse, I mean.

Called friends of mine in W Palm Beach last night. They had no power, but their old-fashioned land-line still worked, as it is still powered from the phone company. Neat.
They were fine, with candles and stuff, and the house boarded up. But they begged me to tell them: Where is the hurricane now? How fast is it moving? See, they had no way to get any news about when it would be over. It's boring sitting in the dark.

The random painting posts are kinda sorta like the Professor's quotation from Gatsby... a departure point to an interesting corner of the universe. Lem is right about the reference to Bob Ross (peace be upon him). Primarily an engraver, Dore's paintings smack of amateur hour. Dore was best known for his illustration of Dante's inferno which must have added a rich macabre flavor by candle light.

What do we really know about Equifax or any of the other credit reporting agencies? And why do so many people trust LifeLock? A supervillain couldn't come up with a better scheme.

What is the FBI? Accountants and lawyers. What would they know about detective on police work? So the way they solve cases is to rely on informants. Like Sammy Gravano and Whitey Bulger. The kind of freaks who like to kill people with piano wire. Maybe a little class rubs off on them from the interactions. Not saying who "them" is.

Oh yeah, and blackmail, with those famous files. And a rep they've coasted on for decades.

They pointed the FBI to Ted, but "I think my brother in law might have written this" isn't enough to get a federal warrant to search his home. They needed something more concrete to tie him to the manifesto, and the linguistic analysis created by the FBI profiler was used to tie the language used to Kaczynski.

The series does a good job of making the FBI look like the bureaucratic idiots they were, however. Louis Freeh comes off as particularly spineless.

You have to remember, this was pre-Patriot Act. "I think my brother in law might have written this" could probably get you anything through the FISA court these days.

What do you mean? They investigated both the Tsarnaev brothers and the Orlando nightclub shooter before they had committed a single crime!
