Meade, my man, your life reminds me of mine. I did a recent tour of several of my growing up places and it was a rude awakening. New Castle, Pa. was one of them, a town that boasted 48,000 people then. Today it's 22,000. And what distress. The downtown looked terrible like most Western Pa. towns. The old residence ... terrible.

The other place I went back to was in southern Michigan in Hillsdale County. Hillsdale boasts the famous Hillsdale College but after that ... pretty bleak. The Amish are moving in and that's a good thing.

But these places are still in me. I treasure them. How did the Beatles put it?

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all

My wife will join me in retirement next year, and we will probably do some road trips. We are in SE Wisconsin and just made our first trip to Indiana (have passed through several times). Three nights. We went to Valparaiso (stayed there), then Auburn (only had time to go to two of the auto museums), Shipshewana (too much of a tourist trap - thought it would be some quaint Amish village), overnight in Michigan City, and then back to Valparaiso for the last day & overnight (daughter has friend there - that is why we stayed two nights).

Next time we go, would like to go to Turkey Run Park (looks like Perrysville not that far away - have a distant relative that works for school system there), then Indianapolis, then Auburn (will want to be there two days - spend more time at the museums). Other destinations may be La Porte (I am intrigued with "The Looking Glass" movie that was filmed there), and the Indiana Dunes National Park. That is just the short list - Indiana has so much to offer within an easy drive from Wisconsin.

Cafe Church or Library Church? I guess its Eucharist or Liturgy.

Deplorable.

The church is nearby. I had a photo of it up about 10 days ago.

The church.

The two things that saved my old home town from a similar fate are (1) the quarry is still on business, and (2) the Chicago suburban sprawl made it out that far and beyond. The town is close to rail commuter stations in a neighboring town and entrances to interstates and other routes downtown.

Now I do apologize to Meade and others for my unkind remarks about church in that thread.

Alan Markus, do do the Dunes.

There are space-times where listeners are created to hear “go left, right.”

@M Jordan: indeed. Nicely put. Thanks.

@Feste: forgiven.
