In Myanmar, after heavy rains, the Thiri Yadana Pyilone Chantha Pagoda slid into the Ayeyarwaddy River.

"This pagoda was built in 2009, when it was far away from the river," he told AFP by phone on Monday. "Year by year, the river has eroded the land and now the pagoda has fallen into the river."

Gahrie म्हणाले...

1) This was not a historic landmark, but a modern building.

2) The idiots knew about the problem for years, and never did anything to try and protect it.

I'm imagining the local TV newsbabe reading that headline. Ish kabibble.

Looks like a computer generated scene.

Looks like Hank Stamper's house. Except Hank Never let the river eat it.

I blame global warming and melting icebergs for the river's rise.

I'm impressed by the depth of the river, and how the pagoda actually appeared to fall into the river.

Etienne म्हणाले...

Overpopulation. Too many people peeing into the river.

Doncha hate it when that happens?!

You're at pagoda peaceably working your prayer beads & chanting your mantra, & then ---- whoosh! ----- the kharma of the universe decides it's time for you to take a swim.

Always pisses me off, fer shure, fer shure.

A cleansing flood comes and oops its all gone. The next Pagoda will be built on an ark.

Sebastian म्हणाले...

Serves them right for not building the pagoda out of sand.

Why was a camera pointed at it at the right time?

It reminds me of the scene near the end of Casino Royale when the Venetian house sinks to the bottom of the Adriatic, except this is real and that was absurd.

The Burmese forgot the Viagra.

Bad karma.

That's a region of the world where baby talk became the adult language.

Consider it a demonstration of impermanence, one of the three marks of existence in Buddhism. BTW, whichever dunce placed huge captions right over the crucial part of the screen deserves to be reborn as a slug.

JohnAnnArbor म्हणाले...

Isn't impermanence a big part of Buddhist thought?

The bureaucratic tone in memos would be hard to achieve though. Everybody would laugh.

Without Latin we couldn't have officials.

Going to be there soon. Flying into Yangon with my enduro, explore Myanmar then cross into India at Tamu on my way to the Sikkim.

...and you scoff at the threat of Global Warming. Within 10-years, science expects to see this type event everyday.

and you scoff at the threat of Global Warming. Within 10-years, science expects to see this type event everyday.

Well why not? It's only been happening for tens of millions of years.....

Howard म्हणाले...

Buddhist churches have only been around for like 2,500 years and none so far has been swallowed up by rivers. This is totally new. An existential threat.

While they had no legal obligation to try to save the pagoda, they at least could have called 911.

DC is actually built on low-lying land. Lowest of all is the State Department which is why they call the building Foggy Bottom or Swampoodle. Maybe The Donald shouldn't drain the swamp - be fun to watch State tilt over and in. Unfortunately the Capital is built on, well, Capital HILL so we can't watch it go.

No digital signal where I am vacationing and so I only have intermittent contact with the news in the form of print. You can't comment there and you feel like that person trapped in an ATM - just no way to get a message out. But the country seems unchanged - still going to hell but taking longer than predicted to get there - as I expected.

Meade म्हणाले...

@Rabel, lol.

Clyde म्हणाले...

Bad karma.

Rabel म्हणाले...

It seemed so obvious and yet two hours and 33 comments in and no one had hit on it. Come on people. You can't rely entirely on Laslo.

FTR: Rainfall increases are not signs of Warming the atmosphere at the level where CO2 supposedly forms a feedback ceiling/heat trap. They have not warmed at all.

The rainfall increases are signs of increasing of cool air over the poles dipping further towards what are normal amounts humid hot air around the equator. That is what makes the Jet Streams dip down and make barriers behind which air circulation is blocked a few weeks at a time. Everybody knows that.

So the cooler the earth's atmosphere has gotten, the more rainfall runoff is going into some of the rivers and not others, while the Sea Level is dropping from added ice accumulation in Antarctica and Greenland.

But never again, if you were paying attention (which is asking a lot from you.)

If only Trump hadn't withdrawn from the Paris Agreement this never would have happened.

(Yes, that's sarcasm.)

They didn't use enough gold, and someone didn't appreciate it.

In other religion news, Richard Dawkins cancelled in Berkeley because of hurtful statements about Islam. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/jul/24/richard-dawkins-event-cancelled-over-his-abusive-speech-against-islam. Actually, he says, he only criticizes Islamism, not Islam. Except that Islam is the greatest evil in the world. And he likes Muslims, as long as they don't do Islam, or Islamism.
I know, I didn't get it either.
