In the golden forest...

golden forest

... where in the world are we, and what would we see from this geographic point if we turned around?

The photo is just a Google Street View grab that I made yesterday.

Later, I will give you another Google grab that answers my question.

ADDED: Here's the other view:

A monument in Kazakhstan

The location is Kazakhstan. Somewhere in Kazakhstan. It's a big place, and I'm sorry I didn't record the name of the city. I'm not engaged in a Geoguessr-type activity. It's an exercise in photography, not geography.

Is it the Katyn Wood(Forest) Massacre site? The one where Stalin's ways made Hitler look normal.

Curious George म्हणाले...

I would call that "woods", not "forest".

Let me say that I picked a foreign country, lifted up the little Google Street View "man," saw the blue lines showing where street view was available, and randomly dropped the man down. This was exactly the view at that point. I thought, wow, pretty! That's so weird that the first view here is so pretty. You never know. Then I rotated the view and was struck by the complete transformation of the feeling of the place.

We don't want to wait.

Ann: Have you played the Google street view game Geoguessr? It's perfect for this new kick of yours.

tcrosse म्हणाले...

It's the Delta of Venus.

"Ann: Have you played the Google street view game Geoguessr? It's perfect for this new kick of yours."

I think I played it long ago.

It doesn't correspond to what I'm interested in on this "new kick" of mine. Even if it were, how could it be mine if I were playing their game?

That looks like some generic rest area off some monster freeway.

Still trying to decide if the pole is for a light or a flag.

My guess is we are in Poland.

My guess is we are in Poland.

Where else would you find prominent poles ?
This one was used by Magda Przyblk (1748-1813), who invented the strip club.

It is a pretty picture, but trying to identify the location seems futile. All the elements are common: brick surfacing, a light pole, a set of trees planted to screen off whatever structure is in the distance. It's an odd arrangement of those elements which is aesthetically pleasing, but there is nothing that screams a particular locale to my untrained eye. If I was an expert on trees maybe that would give it away but I quit that course after the larch.

Whitewall tires on a T-34? Only in the former Soviet Union!

Another proof that Althouse is in the tank for Trump.

It needs a Confederate flag.

Is this like six degrees of impeachment?

1. Golden Forrest
2. Golden showers
3. Dossier
4. Russia
5. Trump
6. Impeachment!

If you can play the game well enough, you can be a fake news producer.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Well, didn't you give it away, Althouse? I would guess from the other side you are likely to realize you are in an actual city, not a forest- so I guess you see large apartment buildings?

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Oh, I see you had already updated it. So the tank itself is what you see.

अनामित म्हणाले...

I think it may be Auschwitz.

I used to believe that the Cossacks came from Kazakhstan because "Cossack" and "Kazakh" are pretty much homophones, especially when you factor transliteration. Turns out true Cossacks come from the Ukraine and the steppes of Russia while the Kazakhs are.from south Central Asia and the two peoples are unrelated.

In the golden forest (woods) in downtown Kazakhstan.
