What it means to say "He broke me" — the words Kathy Griffin said 3 times and made her cry.

Here's yesterday's post about Griffin's "He broke me." She'd lawyered up, and she'd moved beyond her sincere apology for going too far and wanted all the people who were outraged and attacking her to know that now they'd gone too far, and they had become the bullies. But it shifted from crying out about all the many people who were swarming her, to a focus on the one man, Trump. The key phrase was "He broke me." That one man, he broke her.

If you do a Google image search for "broke me," you'll see something like this:

"Broke me" belongs in melodramatic speech about a love relationship. Where did that visualization of Trump come from? Kathy Griffin never had a love relationship Donald Trump — did she?! — so how could there have been an emotional reservoir from which "He broke me" could spring?

You might argue, it wasn't that kind of "broke me." It was like breaking a horse. She sees herself as a wild, untamed creature — galloping comedy, running free. And Trump tamed her. He got that saddle on her and he's riding her. No. I'm not seeing that.

She was in relationship mode. "He broke me" is of a piece with: I really loved him. But how can that make sense?! It made enough sense for her to stop and listen to herself and say it again and hear herself again and say it once more with overly passionate feeling, like a ham actress in a bad movie. Why?! Where did that come from?

One answer is: We (some of us) are experiencing Donald Trump as our boyfriend. We love him in a romantic way. It's easy to see that we felt like that about Obama. I wrote a post in 2014 about how I already had 54 post with my tag "Obama the Boyfriend." It is something that happens with political leaders, romantic fixation. It was especially strong with Obama, and we could see it and (often) confess to it, because he was outwardly so charming and attractive and we wanted to be seen loving him.

But Trump?! Could Trump's success — his bizarre, how-the-hell-did-that-happen? success — be explained as romantic love? Throughout the campaign season, I know, I always opposed Trump on the sheer merits, but I also observed myself rooting for him. It was absurd, and yet I saw it happening for months. I didn't want him to win, so what was this crazy elation when he did win? I asked myself that question over and over again and observed myself on the heightened scrutiny level of knowing I was doing it and that it was bizarre.

I'm not making a new tag for this. I'll just give it my old tag "Trump derangement syndrome." It's a love/hate relationship.

I took it to mean that her schtick of "moving the line" and "crossing the line" has been broken. Broken schtick.

@Althouse, interesting analysis. I had connected her words to loss of anticipated income and likely financial difficulties. "Broke" as in bankrupt, in other words.

"Do you remember what you felt about Trump at the beginning of the Primaries season? He was entertaining, weird, ridiculous, fascinating. He made you feel like you were living something you’ve never seen before. Things didn’t make any sense. You couldn’t quite categorize him or point out the source of his attraction, but you couldn’t stop coming back for more, even if it felt somewhat… dirty. Wrong. That’s the feeling you get from a sociopath. I recognized it immediately because I once lived with one."

That's how it's explained.

Let's get more cuttingly analytical about the "guy thing" you have with Trump. It's relationships, even when guys do it.

Humperdink म्हणाले...

I read Trump's response to her bloody depiction of him. For Trump, it was fairly tame.

I will tell who Trump broke: Low Energy Jeb, Little Marco, and Lyin' Ted.

Bob Boyd म्हणाले...

Maybe she meant financially. She lost a bunch of gigs.

William म्हणाले...

I think this is an interesting and perceptive post. I voted for Trump largely because he's not Hillary, but there's no denying he has a fan base and that he exerts considerable emotional appeal on that base. This is as good an explanation as any........Maybe Griffin was using hipster talk. I don't speak that language, but "broke me" might have a different valence or connotation among the hip. If so, we'll never know by reading the comments here.......Broke as in flat broke or broken as in a broken mattress spring? There's so much complexity and depth in Kathy Griffin's mind that her statements can be discussed endlessly and their full meaning never truly fathomed. There are poems by Yeats that are like that.

Matt Sablan म्हणाले...

"For Trump, it was fairly tame."

Bruce Gee म्हणाले...

I don’t know about cuttingly analytical, but the guy thing I had with Trump was he was the only one in the field that I thought had a chance to erode the progressive agenda in the fed. That maybe will help you to understand why I don’t give a damn about his tweeting and his inaccuracies. They would have to get a lot, a lot worse before it mattered to me. You know, I figured the country was lost anyway, so what the heck: one last roll of the dice.

I never understood the disgusting romantic fixation anyone had for Obama. With Trump: for guys like me its relatively easy to keep a distance because he is so transparent, and we don’t actually trust the guy if you know what I mean.

Comanche Voter म्हणाले...

We're hostages to the most mind numbing "interactive" dialogue between politicians and the media, that we can barely keep our sanity.

So much of PC is built on relationships. Were it not for soap opera women, there'd be no news at all.

Okay, I'll be serious for a second. How did Trump "break" Kathy Griffin? He said her beheading stunt was "sick". And then Melania said that what Griffin did was "disturbing".

Those 2 words — "sick" and "disturbing" purportedly "broke" Kathy Griffin.

Come on — don't we need better comediennes?

Matt Sablan म्हणाले...

The worst part is -- Trump did nothing to her, compared to how Trump broke other people. He didn't show up with a bunch of her accusers; he didn't tear her apart publicly, or privately. He simply stated that she was a jerk, and his wife mentioned her that Griffin upset her son.

The person/people Griffin REALLY should feel broker her are Anderson Cooper and other liberals who finally decided that, like Boxer, she was of no use to the #Resistance any more.

The first thing I thought of when I read her statement was what John McCain (and other American prisoners in North Viet Nam) said about the torture inflicted on them: eventually, they "broke me". I see David Begley made the same connection.

Whatever Griffin had in mind (or whatever it is that she uses in lieu of a mind), her whine that TRUMP did something TO HER is incredibly narcisstic. She needs to go away, and we should help her do that by ignoring her.

Maybe the head thing was a setup to attack Trump when he went all medieval on her. Trump didn't take the bait but Griffin had no choice but to procede with the next stage of the plan. The result is behavior from Griffin that doesn't appear to make sense.

policraticus म्हणाले...

I think the simplest answer is that she believes that Donald Trump made her crazy, that his very existence broke her mind. It is a self-diagnosis of a virulent form of Trump Derangement Syndrome. She wants us to believe that Trump struck first. That the virtual beheading was an act of self defense.

Unfortunately for Griffin, we have a long career in evidence of her saying cruel things about people who cannot or will not defend themselves. She has made a career out of getting laughs for being snarky and irreverent toward such universal villains as Taylor Swift. And for her hyperbole regarding the foibles of the creative class she has been handsomely rewarded, both in money and in accolades.

There is a thin line between hyperbole and being unhinged. If you are lucky, you have a friend or two who will tell you to dial it back a notch. If your Kathy Griffin? Not so much.

She thought she was as influential or powerful as someone like Colbert, but was slapped down and reminded that, no. She isn't one of the special people who get dispensations.

Birkel म्हणाले...

@ Althouse: "...it is something that happens...

No. A thousand times no.

There is agency. People choose to believe they have personal relationships with distant people: presidents, actors, authors, etc. But those people choose poorly.

The people on the Left who believed they had a relationship with Obama, that cold, calculating politician, were Willing Dupes. The people on the Left who are pretending at the same with Trump, the ridiculous man, are pretending at Willing Dupe in order to solicit a response from others who might be fooled.

It is something that happens when people are unbalanced and put too much stock in politicians. Maybe.

Bob Boyd म्हणाले...

Griffin is between a rock and a hard place. I bet she's getting as much or more crap for apologizing as she did for the beheading pics. The Resistance can't be pleased that a line was finally drawn somewhere on what can be said about Trump.

So maybe she was speaking to them and meant Trump broke her will to resist.

Dust Bunny Queen म्हणाले...

Trump's "lame" tweet about Kathy Griffen makes complete sense. When your opponent is busy destroying himself, don't interfere.

I also understood her whine: "He broke me" as being a reference to her her career and $$.

I don't know about a love hate relationship WITH Trump himself, but I sure love what he is doing to the Democrats, the liberals and the entrenched RINOs. My vote was firstly against Hillary, but more so for someone who would come in and kick the hell out of the establishment. Turn the tables over. Upset the apple cart and in general just jerk the whole system back into something that is there for the American people and not for the entitled elites.

Probably, I love the idea of Trump, what he proposed to represent, and not Trump himself. Now as to the love turning into hate, that can happen too If Trump goes back on his promises and morphs into yet another weaselly political hack. I The turning point was really close when it sounded like he might be waffling on the Paris Accord.

We went from Colbert joking about Vladimir Putin orally raping Trump and artists depicting him as a grotesque, to Griffin posing with his severed head. It's natural she thought that would not be objectionable, or simply would push the boundaries.

Tari म्हणाले...

tcrosse is right. This is the first step in rehabilitating her. The left were embarrassed by what she did - or they had to pretend they were, because so many people were outraged. I think it was a deliberate choice of words likely suggested by her attorney:

Her emotionalism and body language is that of a sexual assault victim, which also plays into the Misogynist Trump narrative, and Griffin IS an actress afterall. Even the press conference was staged in the way it would be for a rape victim coming forward.

You know you heard "he broke me" but I suspect many listeners had a visceral reaction as if they heard "he raped me".

I think that a lot of those here are overthinking this a bit. Or maybe I am. But I see this as an appeal to left wing victimology. Very much like when Trayvon Martin was seen as the victim, dying after trying to beat George Zimmerman's head into the concrete walk, then trying to strangle him, or Big Mike Brown dying while charging Officer Owin Wilson, after having earlier punched him and tried to take his gun away from him. Both violent thugs, dying in the commission of violent thuggish acts, and, yet, somehow seen by the left as the victims, and the guys they physically assaulted as the victimizers. I see her as trying to flip the script, trying to get the left behind her as the victim, and not the real victims - the Trump family.

Key words from yesterday: broke, victim, bully, old white men, freedom.

Kathy knew Trump from before he was president. In her mind, he also "knew" her. She says crazy things on stage - I'm going to go after Barron - and no one has ever complained. She took a "provocative" photograph for the sake of generating publicity, as she's going on tour and this should raise awareness of who she is and the kind of comedy she does. Trump might not like it, but he should understand it was only meant "as a joke".

It didn't go well. She thought her apology would suffice. It didn't. People are cancelling her shows.

To what does she attribute this? Her actions? The ability of people to engage in a free market? No, she lost five shows.

Trump tweeted disapproval. She's the victim. He's the most powerful man on the planet. She's a fighter, but it's not a fair fight. Trump is out to get her. The Trump family is out to get her. Who knows what favors they're pulling in or promises they're making in order to ruin her. Trump is well connected both in the casino world and politically, and shows are being cancelled by old white men.

When asked about Anderson Cooper's negative reaction and CNN's cancellation, she changes the subject.

She took a swing at Trump and he punched back. That is how it all plays out in her version of events. Trump's unequal punch landed so hard it shattered something inside of her. She's a fighter, but she was quickly defeated and can't continue the fight.

She was not merely defeated by a superior opponent, she was broken inside the ring by an old, white man who carries way to much power to be allowed to use it against her.

She is playing to her base, whom she needs to maintain her career. Trump is the bully. She is the victim. That will sell to them.

The first two paragraphs of the Clairmont article are 100% the reason that I and many others decided to vote for Trump over the RINO's clogging the field.

2016 is the Flight 93 election: charge the cockpit or you die. You may die anyway. You—or the leader of your party—may make it into the cockpit and not know how to fly or land the plane. There are no guarantees.

Except one: if you don’t try, death is certain. To compound the metaphor: a Hillary Clinton presidency is Russian Roulette with a semi-auto. With Trump, at least you can spin the cylinder and take your chances.

The rest of the article is right on as well, "But it’s quite obvious that conservatives don’t believe any such thing, that they feel no such sense of urgency, of an immediate necessity to change course and avoid the cliff. .

That the people who supposedly are Conservative refuse to act in the face of what WE out in the hinterlands perceive as being a crisis, is it any wonder that WE decided to roll the dice on a person like Trump.

My warning to the elites and the liberals who are Hell bent on trying to overturn an election stands. You want to remove Trump, re-establish the status quo and piss off a lot of very pissed off voters?

In March, a white supremacist reportedly traveled from Baltimore to New York City with the express purpose of killing a black man, which he did, before turning himself into police. Earlier that month, a Sikh man was shot and injured in front of his house in a Seattle suburb. His alleged attacker reportedly shouted “go back to your country.” Days earlier, in Kansas, authorities described how a man walked into a bar and shot three men, including two immigrants from India, after shouting “get out of my country” and yelling racial slurs. One of the Indian men, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, died of his wounds. More recently, a California man was alleged to have stabbed a black man with a machete after yelling racial slurs—he’s facing charges—and a Native American man was run down and killed by an assailant who allegedly shouted racial slurs."

Perhaps a completely spontaneous, totally non-rehearsed or choreographed "Woodsy Walking Tour" where Kathy "inadvertantly" encounters loving admirers who want nothing more than to publicly relate how truly warm and human-like Kathy really is could be arranged.

Even better, a completely spontaneous and loving moment captured by intrepid reporters who somehow elude a large professional security apparatus to snap a photo of Kathy dancing "romantically" on the beach wrapped in an American flag with a vagina/Earth-first hat and snuggling "young" (35 yr old) Islamic immigrant "dreamer" from Somalia.

The fact that these so-called conservative #nevertrumpers didn't give a damn about the control of the SCOTUS showed me they weren't conservative at all.

We've dodged a bullet when we got a 5th Republican on the Court. If Hillary had gotten elected we'd have a Kagan-Ginsburg dominated SCOTUS, and Appeals courts packed with left-wing wackos. The damage that would inflict on the USA for the next 10 years would've been incalculable.

This isn't about Trump dishing it out or taking it; it's about whatever point you're trying to make. No one here is whining about how unfair it all is - you are. I'm just trying to find out why.

I am not complaining about how unfair it is. I think Trump has asked for everything he has gotten and then some. He moved all the boundaries and now we are all finding out where the new ones lie. It is a trial and error process. Apparently mistreating effigies of Trump is out of line, where once there had been a long tradition of this kind of thing. Apparently we now all belong to the pussy nation. Arguably right wingers are guilty of cultural appropriation from the left wing pussies.

The left moved all the boundaries over the last 50 years and Trump is a response.

History did not begin in 2016 though I recognize that is a blasphemous assertion to the Revisionist Left. Old habits die hard for them.

That can't be as the left has already demonstrated a high level of affinity for those who demonstrate actual, not fake, bloodlust.

Again, the only way for conservatives to gain lefty support would be to start lopping off heads, kidnapping girls for sexual slavery, cutting off female genitalia and tossing gays off of roofs.

'cuz that's what it takes to get the lefties in your side.
