Speaking of food and wine, the wife so liked the Cab at Napa Valley's Elizabeth Spencer Winery, that I bought her a gift box of that vintage which came with a pair of wine glasses that hold a whole bottle of wine each. In a nice gift box for air travel too.
And we discovered that the recommended Rutherford's Grill is an exact copy of our favorite Houston's in Atlanta. Only the name was changed.
Yes, I will stay married to her. And the wine tastes better in the huge glasses.
I've posted this before. My wife (in her 20s) was driving down the highway and a James Taylor cassette started playing. She realized at that moment that she really did not like James Taylor any more; she pressed eject and threw the cassette out the window. When we were dating and she told me this I realized simultaneously (i) that I too could no longer stand listening to James Taylor, and (ii) that we should get married.
The Mickey D I went to in Moscow guarded its salt. There were no packets. You had to go up to the counter, take a napkin and put salt on it and bring back to your table. When you think about it, it makes sense. Think of The Depression here.
The McDonald's in Moscow opened before the fall of the USSR, technically.
My spouse came home with a terrible stomach bug that lasted for a few months. Every couple of weeks it would act up. Would have been wise to eat all meals at the McDonalds.
When The Future Mrs. Expat(ish) was swilling down sh*tty fake Mexican Cantina margarita's that some other guy was buying her and continued to hold my hand.
Man, she could tots pound the booze back in the day. Carolina Girl, if you want to get your James Taylor on.

I like it. Good fellowship around eating food is the all time best sign of a happy relationship. Now if McD's only served wine/vodka.

What? You traded Sweet Baby James for a mere wife. You hereby forfeit your Baby Boomer Badge.

You married a litterbug? That would have been a deal-breaker for me.
Ignorance is Bliss - she claimed it is the only time in her entire life she has littered (she's a well known environmental leader in the Southwest).
I'm guessing Laslo isn't awake. But if you eat 6 Big Macs in a row you're going to have GI symptoms.

My recollection is that the first, big McD in Moscow opened ca. 1972 and was discussed as a harbinger of "detente."

it opened about 2 years before the USSR fell. around 1990 or so.
Virgil - that story is awesome.
A great thread at reddit.
Sadly, most Americans only get state marriages now. Winning a spouse by feeding them is so 20th century...
While we were dating, my future wife killed a possum in the garage with a snow shovel.
Because it hissed at her.
You're goddamn right I married her.
@Swede = why was the possum holding a snow shovel in the garage? And how does a snow shovel hiss?
Kidding aside, great story. Should give the kids pause.

Hell, into the early 80's there were only 7 McDonald's in England, all in London. It's very different now though.
