"In... Scottsbluff [Nebraska], which will experience 1 minute and 42 seconds of totality, the 81-room Hampton Inn & Suites is about 90% booked at a premium rate of roughly $300 a night..."

"... said Clarence Gealy, managing member. 'Some of the first people to book were from Europe... We’ve talked about having a steak fry or something like that for our eclipse guests to help make it an enjoyable adventure for them.'"

It gets as dark as a total eclipse at night there.

Some of us have had our motel rooms booked for years now. (Not in Scottsbluff, though. It's a secret.)

I was going to go to the Seychelles to see Halley's Comet back in 1986. I'm glad I did not do it as it was pretty much a bust.

Nebraska's day in the sun!

I might go to the Sandhills Motel in Mullen in Hooker County. Not in the line of sight, but the kayaking is great.

Maybe we can have a meet up for charming commenters of the Althouse blog in the Cornhusker State.

I'm going to jet off to Nova Scotia with my live-in to see it. Are the rooms there booked?

David Begley म्हणाले...

I was wrong! Mullen and Thedford are in the path. Dinner at Stubbs!

Crawford and Alliance are also great places to visit.

Darker. Much darker.

Might mollify some of them when it's cloudy.

I also recommend the Roadside Inn in Thedford. Right next to Stubbs.

I live at almost 100% (like 99.7%), and it's a 40 min drive to dead center and 2'39". Guess I'll check it out.

Strange the Euros would go to fairly remote Nebraska for this. It will be much more convenient, later in the day and of longer duration in central Missouri, Southern Illinois, and western Kentucky.

I'll be biking the Katy trail and pulling off around Rocheport to indulge in some local hooch a friend of mine bootlegs.

i plan to be watching in Alliance NE.

No contest.

If you haven't been to Nebraska's Sandhills then you have not seen America.

sane_voter म्हणाले...

Western NE has a lower probability of clouds based on long term data than anywhere east of the Mississippi River.

Jay Vogt म्हणाले...

Been there David. It was hot.

If you haven't had my friend's hooch then you wouldn't understand.

OBTW, I appreciated your contributions to Powerline.

I loved driving thru Western NE and especially liked Scottsbluff.

Watching at Carhenge would be truly awesome.

I'll have to settle for the volcanic cones near Rexburg, ID.

David Begley म्हणाले...

Carhenge is awesome. Perfect place to watch.

We are going to spend a week near Ennis Montana. We'll drive 100 miles south to see the eclipse.

I think the movement of people and the associated traffic for this eclipse is going to be epic, especially in the eastern US. You better be very near the center line on Aug 21 or be driving the night before the eclipse or you run the risk of sitting in a massive traffic jam and miss out. And 99% eclipse is nothing like 100%.

I get 1 min 39 seconds totality in my backyard for free! (Gladstone, MO)

We are heading to central South Carolina (not one of the large towns). An 8 hour drive under normal circumstances.

WTF is a steak fry? Sounds a little scary.

Deirdre Mundy म्हणाले...

We're about 1.5 hours off the path and will totally drive down to KY to see it!

And if it rains...sorry, no refunds.

A group of friends are riding motorcycles to the hills of northern Georgia. Great roads and a friend owns a vineyard there.

Life is good.

We've booked a weekend in Nashville. Some guitar shopping, museums, and local music over the weekend. If it rains on Monday, still a good vacation.

I will head to Gatlinburg Tn and guard my cabin. It wont' be totality in town but it will in the Park and the deplorables will be filtering down the mountain past our house after dusk.

We have a room booked in Somewhere, Kentucky. Husband did the research and made the reservation months ago. I have never been to Kentucky so I am looking forward to it. I kind of want to drive from home in south-central Texas, as I'm always up for a good road trip, but I think he's got me convinced to fly into Nashville and drive from there.

I recommend you try parts of the bourbon trail. Beautiful country and..... well.... bourbon.
