Nice room. Lots of light for cold climate.

In Tucson we like walls to hang our paintings.

When I was growing up, I loved to walk along the sidewalk on cold nights and see lights in the windows.

It always looked warm and inviting.

Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld claimed that Meryl Streep wanted to wear an embroidered gray silk gown from his recent couture collection on Oscars night, but in the middle of working to customize the dress for her, a member of her team told them, "Don't continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us."

The brand has a policy of not paying celebrities to wear its clothes.

"After we gift her a dress that's 100,000 euros [$105,000], we found later we had to pay [for her to wear it]. We give them dresses, we make the dresses, but we don't pay," Lagerfeld said. "A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?"

Streep rep denies claim, so rumor remains unverified.

Doesn't the glare from outside bother your eyes when at the computer?

My eyes are bad, but I recall a lot of younger workers who went out of their way to block all the outside light coming in to the building. And the architect had designed such huge window.

Cloud glare is the worst.

That avocado plant has become huge. Trumpified.

I got a Stressless chair for my wife when she herniated a disc while pregnant with our second child. I should have gotten two.

There's not much glare with the northern exposure, but sometimes I wear the fedora to limit the light and maintain the right eye adjustment for the screen.

I love that room decor. And it is a big room... and you a mini house lover.

Wow. World Headquarters. Cool.

I watched The Young Pope this week. I recommend it. I would highly recommend it if it stopped at episode 6, or if episodes 7-10 were better, but still worth a look. It is a lush visual treat, not withstanding some frankly pornographic scenes. The characters are complex and the acting superb. Even the most venal cardinal has moments of grace. Prayer is portrayed in a meaningful way most of the time. And it brings forth controversies within the Church beautifully. Should it be easy to be a faithful Catholic, or hard? Given the pederasty scandal, should homosexuals be priests? Should the pope be a pop icon or should he keep the spotlight on Christ?
Too bad it goes off the deep end after episode six. The pope prays and a corrupt nun dies, he makes abortion an unforgivable sin, and there's a gratuitous pornographic menage-a-trois sex scene. I suppose writers and directors figure they have to do the porn because it's HBO and they can, but the assassination miracle and the unforgivable sin beggar belief, even within a fictional story. No one with any understanding of Christianity could find those story lines believable. Too bad, because without those fatal mistakes it would have been a superb series.

I admit that, after seeing this, I'll never wear shorts again.

Nice room and especially with a northern exposure - the best. Is the glass "one way"? That would help privacy.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

The chair brand is — as Triangle Man noticed — Stressless.

The floors are not plywood. Though the camera filter may make them look weird here, they are oak. I took photographs of the installation in 2014.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"Is the glass "one way"?"

No, but the ground floor is up one floor in the back.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

Wait... that was 2013.

Here are some shots of the finished floor (before the baseboards were replaced and the walls painted.

Here's how we were set up in the sunroom during the project.

isn't having strong daylight behind monitor tiring for the eyes?

"isn't having strong daylight behind monitor tiring for the eyes?"

As noted above, this effect does not happen when you have a northern exposure.

There are some days in winter (only in winter) when at some times the light is too sharp. That's what the hat is for. With a brim shading my eyes, it's fine.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

I love having the view outside in my peripheral vision when I'm looking at the computer all day. It feels very nice.

wild chicken म्हणाले...

Huh. Maybe I'll try the hat trick.

Dagwood म्हणाले...

Beautiful room. Looks like you all planned it very well, and it has paid off.

Ever considered a burqa instead of the fedora?

Althouse, what brand is the side table next to the red chair? It's exactly what I am looking for at the moment.
