Here's Bill Maher interviewing Milo Yiannopoulos last night.

I thought that went very well for both men, and it was surprising and nice how much they agreed, notably about the power of comedy to transcend political lines and recombine people in new ways. These 2 made a great team, and I think Maher saw a lot of himself in Milo.

ADDED: Yesterday on this blog, we were talking about a Reason.com piece by Robby Soave. Soave disrespected the comic version of political speech:
Too many right-leaning student groups have lost interest in inviting speakers who are knowledgeable about philosophy and policy: they would rather score easy outrage points with provocateurs.
He's talking about Milo (as the link makes clear).

What I said yesterday was: "I don't agree with Soave's disapproval. I think you can have philosophers and policy wonks and also lively provocateurs...."

Seeing Milo and Maher working together in that clip — and going meta about how political comedy works — reinforces my strong belief in the value of comic speech.

Good stuff. Yet, Maher doesn't understand, or pretends not to understand, how fabulous a boon to free speech President Trump is.

damikesc म्हणाले...

This is who Milo is. All of the outrage over him is laughable and shows that Millenials are the most pro-establishment youth group in recent history. They don't want to rebel against ANYTHING. They want to be tucked in.

Didn't one of Maher's guests bitch out and refuse to come because Milo is darned triggering?

And Larry WIlmore is an asshole.

I liked milo in this interview and I have never heard him speak. She should lay off on the pearls though.

Milo is so quick and unrepentant and comfortable. First time to see him. I can see why libs are afraid.

Titus म्हणाले...

She does look like Bruno and needs to lose some weight. She would be cooler if she was stacked.

damikesc म्हणाले...

Everybody should watch Milo in any of his numerous TV appearances in the UK. He is sharp as a knife and doesn't tolerate idiotic bullshit quietly. He is what Jon Stewart always wished to be...able to take down rivals without having to edit interviews to help him.

I wonder how pearls would work for me. Jeans, workshirt (open a few buttons), welding gloves and those fabulous pearls. Damn, just the thought of it makes me hot. Industrial queen of the factory floor. I can't wait for Monday morning!

Laslo Spatula म्हणाले...

Probably the first time many who hate him have actually seen him.

That could apply to both men to some degree, but I am speaking of Milo.

I would think these people would now feel embarrassed:

THIS is what I am so afraid of?

Everyone now sees me as afraid of THIS GUY?

You might as well be terrified of Smurfs.

I am Laslo.

Maher doesn't like personal attacks? Does he really not go after conservatives personally? I used to watch his shows and I don't remember that compunction.

Milo is also testament to how much change there has been among conservatives in the last decade or so. Who woudda thunk that the hero of young, mostly male college conservatives would be a British, ethnically part-Jewish, religiously Catholic, & bluntly, a flamer of a homosexual who very upfront about his preference for black boyfriends.

I just imagine Milo on Bill Buckley's Firing Line from years ago, with Buckley explaining, in that erudite voice of his, that according to his understanding of Thomistic axioms of morality, St. Thomas did not see a place for black cock as a moral good.

Gahrie म्हणाले...

The difference is, Milo admits to being a partisan, and Maher pretends to be objective.

AMDG म्हणाले...

Maher's one saving grace is that he does not like the PC bs which is why he enjoyed Hitchens and enjoys Coulter.

Fernandinande म्हणाले...

"The goose-step, for instance, is one of the most horrible sights in the world, far more terrifying than a dive-bomber. It is simply an affirmation of naked power; contained in it, quite consciously and intentionally, is the vision of a boot crashing down on a face. Its ugliness is part of its essence, for what it is saying is ‘Yes, I am ugly, and you daren't laugh at me’, like the bully who makes faces at his victim. Why is the goose-step not used in England? There are, heaven knows, plenty of army officers who would be only too glad to introduce some such thing. It is not used because the people in the street would laugh."

Derek Kite म्हणाले...

>Too bad he cut it off when they came to Trump.

I don't know what the arrangement was, but it seems that Maher had a very short time window.

I doubt my reaction was unique. I want to watch these guys talk for an hour. It would be entertaining, fun, informative, outrageous and would be the talk of the town for a few days at least.

I think Maher is going to think it over. If it were up to him he would do it tomorrow. But I suspect it isn't.

Great interview. Milo is a sharp guy. But I can see how his politically incorrect opinions coupled with his exaggerated "faggy" mannerisms could rub people the wrong way. The key point though is that "rubbing people the wrong way" does not justify riots, violence, property damage or censorship.

I will bet last night most of Maher's regular audience refused to watch at all.

I have always had a fairly high opinion of Maher, despite some of the stupid things he says and believes- he isn't anywhere close to being as intellectually stunted and close-minded as, let's say, Samantha Bee or pretty much any syndicated columnist on either side of the political divide. I have wondered, though, whether or not my opinion of him is shaped by some extent by the sheer stupidity of the guests he has from the Left- maybe he is making himself look better by inviting onto his show the absolute dregs of the Left?

"And here's another: "Sarah Silverman should've stayed with Jewish Poop jokes."

"Oh yes! EVERYBODY loves poop jokes!"

"But what about the 'Jewish' part?"

"Well, she makes a lot of jokes about being Jewish. And she poops. I poop, and I have a furry butt! Let me tell you, sometimes that's not funny, which only makes it funnier!"

"How about "Matt Damon is a gay Smurf"?

"Look at him! If I were a Smurf I'd fuck him! Oh oh: I said a nasty word! No unicorn for me!"

"Do you think people SHOULD be offended at what you say?"

"I'm a three-foot furry gay troll, but I don't get offended by the 'Lucky Charms' Leprechaun, do I?"

"Smilo, I'm not sure what that even means..."

"Hee Hee! You silly-willy! EVERYONE has a poop-hole! Once you think about that how can you be offended by anything? Even unicorns have poop-holes!"

And, Bill Maher gets a ton of credit for having Milo on the show and affirming that a difference of opinion isn't a big deal.

Maher might be one of last honest, honorable liberals standing. He and Glen Greenwald.(and a few commentators here)

YoungHegelian म्हणाले...

This interview with Milo on CNBC's Power Lunch is also very good. You can see in the last third or so of the interview that John Harwood (the male host on the panel), seems to be warming up to Milo, in spite of himself. The female host who's doing most of the interviewing, Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, never quite seems to get to the point of sympathy.

Milo's also better dressed in this interview.

Bay Area Guy: And, Bill Maher gets a ton of credit for having Milo on the show and affirming that a difference of opinion isn't a big deal.

I'll give him a lot more credit if he brings Milo back and gets down to debating the subject that got cut off at the end. You know, the stuff they disagree about. What I saw was pretty much a self-congratulatory introductory exchange about how great it is that they can listen to each other and agree to disagree.

Sebastian म्हणाले...

Have heard him speak. He took tough questions from a mixed audience, addressed them with humor and occasional substance, disarmed the opposition, and was quick on his feet, in good Oxbridge debating style.

"Too many right-leaning student groups have lost interest in inviting speakers who are knowledgeable about philosophy and policy: they would rather score easy outrage points with provocateurs." Wait, when did student groups favor such supposed heavyweights? How many is "too many"? What proportion of invited speakers are now "provocateurs"--and by whose standards? And what right-wing speaker is not a "provocateur" on any campus these days?

अनामित म्हणाले...

Fernandinande quoting Orwell: Why is the goose-step not used in England? There are, heaven knows, plenty of army officers who would be only too glad to introduce some such thing. It is not used because the people in the street would laugh."

Sadly (rather more than sadly, heartbreakingly), England has had a lot of goose-steppers in the streets (and everywhere else) for a while now, and the English are afraid to laugh at them.

Gahrie म्हणाले...

The only reasons that Milo is considered a conservative is that he believe that the US is the greatest nation ever, and that he actually believes in the first two amendments.

Bruce Hayden म्हणाले...

My view on Maher funs hot and cold. Here, I give him kudos, willing to go where so few on the left are willing to go.

Part of why Milo is so dangerous, of course, and why the left just goes bonkers with him, is that he is so unrepentantly gay, yet is a vigorous, very public, supporter of Trump. The narrative, of course, is that Trump is a horrible homophobe, along with being sexist, racist, antisemitic, etc. Gays are a Dem party constituency, and he is off thee reservation. Way off, in a very visible way. Of course, gay solidarity has never been as strong as, say, black or Jewish solidarity (and, hence, maybe, Maher's point about Milo being half Jewish). And, indeed, we are seeing splits right now between the lesbians running the feminist movement and the trannies wanting to use their bathrooms (just as Blacks are discovering that the Dems have given their jobs to Hispanic illegals).

Of course, Trump is not even remotely a homophobe, as Milo tried to point out (for example, supporting gay marriage long before Obama or Crooked Hillary). Nor, of course, antisemitic, having spent his career in the NY real estate market, and with his closest advisor (his son-in-law), daughter, and grandkids being Jewish. (I love the cognitive dissonance a lot of Jews are going through right now with Trump - I remember a conversation a month or two ago when a friend told me of how antisemitic Trump was, then a couple minutes later was telling me essentially the inside betting lines of which synagogue the Kushners would probably join in DC). But, as I pointed out above, it is all about keeping voting blocks in line, by trying to scare them.

mockturtle म्हणाले...

Finally got to watch it. The point that Milo is trying to make--but which seems to make little or no impact on his host--is that words can be shrugged off so there should be no ban on using them. Rioting, beating and vandalizing cannot simply be ignored. I've never watched Maher before. Not impressed.

Milo has always reminded me of my old friend, Tim, who was just as outré as Milo and just as clever. He kept me in stitches. I miss him.

Beloved Commenter AReasonableMan म्हणाले...

I found Maher quite condescending in this clip. It's his show and he is in charge but he wasn't letting anyone move off the reservation.

Larry Willmore lost a show on Comedy Central. Let that sink in, and also note that a guy's that rolls bowling balls into his nuts and makes fun of internet videos still has a show on that network.

FYI, look for the Overtime clip of the Bill Maher show. There is more Milo talking to the panel that was cut from the broadcast for time.

William म्हणाले...

You have to admire Milo's courage and aplomb. The fact that that he is so flamingly gay helps to highlight his courage. He is far more subversive of gay stereotypes than any of the pro forma gay spokesmen....... I watch the Maher show. I don't especially like him, but he does have conservatives on his panels and they are given license to occasionally win the arguments. I also give him credit for not restricting his criticism of religion to Christians.

JaimeRoberto म्हणाले...

Milo and Maher are two sides of the same coin. They both can make good points, and they both sometimes say pretty outrageous stuff to get a reaction. Maher is on the left, so he gets a TV show. Milo is on the right so he gets the riots. Maybe they should get their own show, M&M.

Paddy O म्हणाले...

"Too many right-leaning student groups have lost interest in inviting speakers who are knowledgeable about philosophy and policy: they would rather score easy outrage points with provocateurs."

I think this gets it entirely wrong. They would rather invite speakers who are knowledgeable about philosophy and policy. But having had those speakers victimized by outraged provocateurs who won't let them speak, these groups have popularized someone who meets the audience where they are at.

Milo is popular right now precisely because he is the intellectual mirror image of those who want to control free-speech. Right-leaning groups will return to inviting more speakers who are knowledgeable about philosophy and policy when there's a return to honest debate and conversation among students who are knowledgeable about philosophy and policy.

And of course Milo is knowledgeable about philosophy and policy, in their current forms. The opposing student groups have a particular philosophy and policies that Milo is distinctly addressing. He's identified a core problem in academic discourse and is profiting from addressing it in a incisive way.

I don't like Trump or him, but it's pretty clear they've both targeted a foundational problem, that those who are part of the problem, who profit from the problem, don't want addressed.

Robert म्हणाले...

Yeah, but if you saw the "Overtime" video (which doesn't air on HBO, only online), thy put Milo with the panel and 2 out of the 3 panelists end up telling him to "F*** Off". lol

rcocean म्हणाले...

"Too many right-leaning student groups have lost interest in inviting speakers who are knowledgeable about philosophy and policy: they would rather score easy outrage points with provocateurs."

The problem is that the conservative speakers "knowledgeable about philosophy and policy" have shown themselves to be cuckservatives, incapable of conserving anything. They babbled for years about Russell Kirk and the Federalist papers and then - in the real world - refused to oppose Hillary by supporting Trump. If can't translate theory into practice, people lose interest.

rcocean म्हणाले...

Of course, its also a false choice. People want to be entertained AND listen to serious speakers. Its not like you can only do both.

Somehow the Left always manages to do both. They also - when in power - push their policies on social issues, economic issues, and every other issue.

The Right however, is always full of people wagging their finger about how we need to stop talking about X or pushing policy Y because we can only do one thing at a time.

Unknown म्हणाले...

That was a boring interview. They were stifling themselves. I'd have liked to see them get into the weeds of some of these issues and then see that polite facade crumble.

Maher is getting DESTROYED (John Oliver style) on twitter by the same people who now hate Jimmy Fallon and Brian Williams for being open to other viewpoints.

I assume, the point is not to get Maher, but to make sure everyone else gets in line.

Sebastian म्हणाले...

@Bruce: "Part of why Milo is so dangerous, of course, and why the left just goes bonkers with him, is that he is so unrepentantly gay" True. Party discipline comes first. Can't have anyone wander off the plantation/reservation. Heretics are worse than mere unbelievers.

What Soave writes is quite unfair:he seems to imply that animosity arose from the provocations of these conservative guests, while everybody knows that aggressive provocation started when the "inclusive" left harassed everybody if the invited speaker was not of their liking. It's not surprising that only "fighting" guest would accept to face a mob shouting slogans for hours.

Same thing happening, since a long time, in my country: it's a thing of the left (it was typical of the Fascist squads, especially in the Padan region; but the Communist squads have never been much different in this regard, even in the 1920s); it's as if they believe to be entitled to such group behavior.

Bruno's not all that interesting. At the end of the day he's just a sado-masochist like any other American conservative professional victim. He gets off on degrading others as much as he invites it against himself; the former is bait for the latter. His biggest high is just finding someone with the wits to do it as cleverly as Maher came to doing it. Anyone can rail against PC. Bruno does not get extra points for declaring that decency is dead, also.

I think Bruno is more a testament to his repressive British (and Catholic?) upbringing than anything else. He uses the openness of America and our culture and speech laws to drive home as hard as he can a point that could and should play much better in his own island nation that it does or would here. Of course he is the darling to the conservatives here who have no other instinct to which to appeal than ethnic/nationalistic/religious defensiveness, but that is a limited crowd. There are abuses on campuses that are now being dealt with and/or rolled back, but that's not what keeps conservatives on them a minority. Part of why Milo is so dangerous, of course, and why the left just goes bonkers with him, is that he is so unrepentantly gay, yet is a vigorous, very public, supporter of Trump.

He also clearly and explicitly discusses his issues with, for example, Islam and his criticisms aren't really refutable. The religion HATES gay people. Countries run by Muslims tend to be exceptionally unpleasant to gays. Why would he, as a gay man, want MORE Muslims in a society that has truly become astonishingly tolerant of gay folks.

His call for gays to get guns and learn to defend themselves also terrifies the Left because the call is a smart call and one that all groups should abide by.

And feminists seem to REALLY dislike his constant referencing that young women do not label themselves as feminist because they, by and large, do not hate men and that seems to be a central tenet in modern feminism. People claiming he makes no salient points also, likely, felt that Lenny Bruce and George Carlin only said bad words for no reason.

I heard Milo: there's nothing extreme in his speech, unless one finds disagreement an extreme experience.

It's becoming a plus for conservatives. There are two major conservatives who will HAPPILY go to colleges and deal with the venom and abuse, Ben Shapiro and Milo. And while they do not like each other at all, they seem to respect each other. They are the ones "speaking truth to power". When the Left shouts down the nice, friendly conservatives (how often is nice and friendly Christina Hoff Somers --- who isn't even a conservative --- protested on campuses?), then it becomes the floor for the ones who will fight back.

Thought exercise: Professor, if you went to a college for a speaking gig, what do you think the odds are that YOU wouldn't be heavily protested?

I heard Milo: there's nothing extreme in his speech, unless one finds disagreement an extreme experience.

On Maher's show, that exchange wouldn't have happened because Maher and his panel are very good at shutting up opponents who ask inconvenient followup questions. Angel-Dyne is correct - Maher cut Milo off before Milo could make his case for supporting Trump.

I'd ask if you know this from personal experience (since you appeal to objective, third-party data so infrequently) but I guess then you'll say I'm being a meanie.

Seriously, MK. There are a lot of gray old queens out there, walking hand-in-hand with their "S.O.s" and spending weekend upon weekend fussing and puzzling endlessly over which social functions to attend and what to bring to them and how to decorate their places. And other family stuff. It's not like every gay is a twenty-something in fishnet midriffs but if that's the way they all appear in your mind then I guess you might want to ask yourself why that is.

Oh look! So unpredictable:

Yiannopoulos was raised in a small town in Kent in southern England.[13] His father is Greek and his mother is British.[14][15][16] His parents divorced when he was a young child and he was raised by his mother and her second husband, with whom he did not have a good relationship. Yiannopoulos described his father as "terrifying" and remarking upon his family's wealth he said, "I would think, if my dad is just a doorman, why do we have such a nice house? Then I saw it on The Sopranos." As a teenager, Yiannopoulos lived with his grandmother, who regularly took him for high tea at Claridge's.

I think your team would fail a basic psychology exam. Like I said, the right has moved from trashing evolution, to physics to economics to the basic social contract and now even basic character issues. They can't even get that right. Poor little sockpuppet Inga makes an asshole of herself once again:

"Numerous media outlets raised the specter of President Donald Trump being anti-Semitic based on an interchange he had with a Jewish reporter at a press conference on Thursday, even though the reporter in question did not see it that way.

“Why are people that aren’t Jewish describing what is anti-Semitism?” the reporter, Jake Trux with Ami Magazine, wondered during an interview on Fox News later that evening.

Turx, who is an orthodox Jew, began his question to Trump by saying he had not seen anybody in his community accuse him or his staff of being anti-Semitic. He noted that Trump’s a grandfather to Jewish children through is son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

“It is very unfair what’s been done to him,” Turx stated. “So I understand why he’s so defensive. I’m with him when it comes to being outraged about him being charged with this anti-Semitism.”

Two physician friends of mine knew "The Index Patient" in the AIDS epidemic., They died early

The "gray old queers" are no longer able to interest the young ones anymore. Why do you think physical fitness and appearance are so important to gays ?

The administrator of our hospital was gay and we always had pretty young men mowing the lawn or washing cars or working in the supply room.

An anesthesiologist friend of mine went to an OR nurses party and the next day came up to a young Asian or Phlippino kid he met at the party and scared him half to death making a play for him.

The kid had no idea the guy was gay until he came on to him.

There is a pretty good book, which you won't read, called, "Goodbye Good Men" about the "pink Mafia" in seminaries in the 60s.

Yes, I know a lot about gay lifestyle, including have to break the news to quite a few nice men that they had a fatal disease.

I still remember one, an engineer at San Onofre Nuclear plant, who had AIDS colitis. When I told him he said, "That's impossible. I've been in a committed relationship for ten years!"

What could I say ? It was a bit like a woman patient who had breast cancer and was a Christian Science member. She said, "I lose my breast and my religion the same day."

Nope. Parental issues are possible quite apart from one's sexuality, or even their gender. Even women can have unresolved problems from an absent father.

Otherwise, I want the whole conservative contingent here to reverse course 180 degrees immediately on their long-held support for Daniel Moynihan's observations and declare that fatherlessness is a totally neutral and never detrimental thing to a child, if not a virtue altogether!

He didn't "leave" the left. He's a liberal who fixates on his distaste for political correctness. So what? It goes overboard. Maybe it should be renamed. Just call it "basic decency." Or even political decency. Yeah, that sounds better and less totalitarian.

I'm sure that in Southern California, cultural issues - including PC/bigotry - are a real fixation. In other economic realities, they are really not any sort of an issue important enough to base a political movement off of.

Why not take the riots to the places Trump voters actually live, like rural Texas or Waukesha county, WI or even upstate New York? Because you'd get your asses beaten in, that's why. Leftist bullies like easy targets, like 71 year old women or guys who are outnumbered 20 to one.

Oh no. I'm sure there are many destitute barristas, made homeless by The Starbucks Empire's simple inability to foot the bill for a window. They are really resentful of how their generous employer has been put under.

The rest of what you wrote was a typical mixture of bravado, violent posturing, accusation, projection, thoughtlessness and self-pitying victimology. Or what I call: Conservative Philosophy.

All of the ideas he spouted here were either relatively uncontroversial (I bother people! 2) Even if "The Left" did accept that, the jump from gender and age needs supporting. Given that you don't seem to understand the gender piece, I doubt you have any idea how you could navigate that jump.

3) Even if "The Left" did accept both your mischaracterization about gender and your jump from gender to age, that wouldn't get you that "Biology doesn't matter."

Exiledonmainstreet, I'm guessing you're just being a jerk, but that's a terrible argument.

I fail to see why. There are a few people - very very few - who are born with the reproductive organs of both sexes and have to chose which sex they identify with. But those unfortunates are very rare.

The others have gender identity dysphoria. I feel sorry for them but men who identify as women are not women, no matter how much they mutilate their bodies. Every cell in their bodies has XY chromosomes. You can call them she or xe or Miss or whatever the hell you wish and that doesn't change, any more than calling myself 27 changes the facts.

There are anoxerics who tell themselves they are obese when they weigh 90 lbs. It would be the height of cruelty to agree with them and encourage them to continue to starve themselves because after all, if they say they are fat, they must be fat. But the delusions of trannies are encouraged and applauded for being "heroic"and anybody like Milo, who points out the obvious truth, is lambasted for bigotry. That's because the Left doesn't give a shit about trannies as people or about really helping them - no, they're just another cudgel to use against the religious right.

It's nonsense -and I foresee an avalanche of lawsuits 20 years down the line. How do you know what the long-term effects of dousing male bodies with estrogen and female bodies with testosterone will be, especially the effect on children with still growing bodies? I expect people will see this folly in the same way we now consider 1940's doctors who performed lobotomies on the mentally ill. Remember that too was considered progressive and humane science at the time.

This view from 1930 is an interesting one.

Maybe these nutbag fascist minoritarians will organize a violent rally. Or maybe, their Savior, Donald the Gaslighter, will send in troops. You know, because he inspires such loyalty and has had such a great time filling the posts required of his government.

But the crybully tactics are indeed amusing. Decrying one oddball incident here or there (I know, no one conservative ever assaulted anyone) as a sign of the mass violence that turns you on and gives you the excuse you think you need to turn on your true violent colors.
