At the Tiny House Café...

DSC04677

... you can talk about whatever you want.

(And think about doing your shopping through The Althouse Amazon Portal. If you like nice dollhouses, you might like this bungalow. Or for big within the category of smallness, there this mansion.)

We had a tiny house movement when I was growing up. It was called "living in a mobile home".

You lived in an even tinier house once your relatives moved in with you.

In the current economy, living in a trailer or shed has become aspirational for those still living with their parents. Had this not happened under Obama, it would be reported on 60 minutes and not on HGTV.

Gahrie म्हणाले...

McMaster sounds like a winner. I be he gets along well with Mattis and hopefully cleans house.

MaxedOutMama म्हणाले...

I think we have now reached the ultimate in Tiny Houses, unless we can come up with some Borrowers to live amongst the tree roots.

That didn't take long to reach its logical end, did it?

Kevin म्हणाले...

You can track the American economy through its television programs:

1999: House Hunters
2006: Flip This House
2010: Storage Wars
2014: Tiny House Nation

They call that dollhouse a 'mansion'? Looks like a three-story farmhouse to me.

SukieTawdry म्हणाले...

Is that a posed picture or did you just come upon it? I love it (although I might have cropped out the trash(?) to the right)!

Gahrie: "McMaster sounds like a winner. I be he gets along well with Mattis and hopefully cleans house"

With McMaster you have another Mattis.

This is quite possibly the most brilliant (philosophically-strategically-tactically-military combat experience) military/national security leadership we have seen since.....ever?

A bit of dead fall to the left in the photo. The trails in my woods are loaded with dead fall every spring. This springs's dead fall is next winter's firewood.

With Trump in office, I suspect the move to ban heating one's home with firewood is now on the back burner, or more accurately in the trash heap.

1. Just came upon it.

2. That's not trash. It's another house. Just more stomped on.

It's rainIng a lot in the Bay Area. Good news - the drought is gone. Bad news - a major dam is collapsing due to lack of maintenance.

That would make it trash.

Yeah, I loved this partial quote from Ellison regarding Muhammed: "And the revelation is to stand up against the constituted powers that are enslaving people..."

Anyone with an inkling of historical knowledge knows that it was largely Muslims who sold black Africans into slavery during the slave trade to the Caribbean and North America.

David Baker,

Pretty good but too much, too rushed, information in too small a space. Sometimes filler is a good thing. The childhood Monopoly game recollection should be two paragraphs by itself.

The best blogs are the ones where people share a little of their talent with their opinions and memories. I like Cookie's Stronnghold blog even if he is a crazed Marxist stooge.

Hi MockTurtle,

Yeah, I find it humorous that the Left embraces Islam in an abstract sense, when in practice, Islamic countries behead gays and oppress women. Don't hear too many feminists and LGBTQYTDXW activists bitching out the Arab countries about "inequality", now do we?

I'm sorry to read of the recent death of Bob Michel, the GOP former Minority Leader in the House for many years.

The ultimate seeker of bipartisanship, he retired from his seat the year the GOP finally won the House and Newt became Speaker. He seemed to know that he would not be elected Speaker or Minority leader after the election even if the party won a majority, that his style had fallen out of favor with the voters, including Wilbur.

I met him a couple of times when he came to our Illinois city to stump for local candidates, giving a speech in the high school gym and pressing the flesh afterwards. He was smoother than buttery velvet, and very likeable, the ultimate nice guy.

May he RIP.

It's H. R. McMaster for National Security Advisor. Whew! When I read that John Bolton was on the short list I wanted to throw up. Bolton's consistently wrongheaded advice needs to be kept as far from the circles of power as humanly possible.

CWJ म्हणाले...

Another of my been meaning to post this for some time comments.

One theme that came up repeatedly here in the run up to the election was that at least with a Republican in office the press would go back to doing it's job. I was sympathetic to that sentiment until the last three months where I believe the press has gone overboard in the opposite direction from its slobbering love fest with Obama.

Maybe if you averaged the coverages of Obama and Trump you'd get a responsible skeptical press, but experience suggests that the reality is one extreme or the other. Like the man with one foot on burning coals and the other in an ice bucket who on average is doing fine, the average is notable for it's nonexistence.

At the Thoreau Society Annual Gatherings in Concord, Mass. for the past few years, a husband and wife couple
has presented an illustrated lecture on their experiences living a simple life in a tiny house in California.
Here is a link to their webpage:http://www.innermosthouse.com/?view=mobile. The inner most house metaphor
suggests cultivation of the inner house of the soul or spirit, if you will.

Thoreau's cabin was large enough for one person to live in in a mild climate. Remember that Thoreau did not live there all the time. It was a study that allowed him to pursue his interests. In reality, it was a 30 minute walk to his parent's house
in the village and a 20 minute walk to Emerson's house. Boy did he like to walk.

The Cracker Emcee,

Many thanks for reading, and the feedback. I'm too old to change now, thus "Atlantic City" is what it is.

Hard to believe, but years ago I was described by "some" as one of "the best short-story writers in America." At the time I was host/moderator of Poets & Writers online (1997-2001). I posted many of my works at P&W, specifically in the "Night Cafe," which I created.

I closed the Night Cafe when I left P&W, but thought it's now time to take some of the stories out from storage, essentially for new readers to take a fresh look.

So again, thanks for taking a fresh look!

McMaster sounds like a winner.

I have not studied his recent career. His book, "Dereliction of Duty" was terrific and I thought it would kill his career. He was a LTC when he wrote it, I think as a PhD thesis. Now he's a LTG but I don't know how much diplomatic experience he has had.

I hope for the best. I did like Bolton. He was Clarence Thomas' roommate at Yale.

Paddy O म्हणाले...

Thanks for sharing, David Baker. I've never been anything near a great short story writer, not even near becoming near, but writing short stories was a significant path out of deep depression for me years back. It's been a while since I've read as a way of sharpening a craft, so I appreciate your willingness to highlight your work. Reminds me of a past love and serves as a nice encouragement. Especially as you are writing for the love of writing, which isn't itself as common these days.

I look forward to reading more of your posts.

J. Farmer म्हणाले...

@Michael K:

I hope for the best. I did like Bolton. He was Clarence Thomas' roommate at Yale.

I think they were just classmates at Yale, not roommates. But I could be wrong. Regardless, I don't think any of Justice Thomas good hometown common sense rubbed off on Mr. Bolton, who's a fanatic.

Note: The above link is also my blog, heretofore private (un-promoted), but now open - not unlike my Night Cafe of old. Where travelers could drop in, have a little coffee, do a bit of reading, like here at the Althouse Cafe!

Yes, that was pretty silly, wasn't it. Perhaps we should be wondering whether the press ever "did its job". It seem more likely that before the internet, it was much harder to discover what an incompetent pack of lying weasels they are. The Gell-Mann effect only operates on those rare occasions when you read press coverage of an event you personally witnessed. But the internet has made possible a sort of continuous Gell-Mann effect, almost in real time.

The growing alliance between the radical left and radical Islamic supremacists.

As we see on so many campuses across the country.

This delightful combo usually attempts to mask it's hatred of Jews and Israel by claiming to be simply anti-zionist. But we all know that's a lie.

There are many times I hear someone say that they didn't support Trump, but had to vote against Clinton. The last election here had a U.S. Senator seat on the ballot. The only two candidates were democrat party members. I would never vote for a democrat, but I saw that the race was between Loretta Sanchez and someone else. Even though I had to vote for Kamala Harris to be my senator, I did it to oppose as I could Sanchez's senatorial chances. Sometimes voting is like picking your poison.

Jon Ericson म्हणाले...

It is debatable which was the worst. I believe Kamala is the pitts.

Bay Area Guy:

Don't believe the hype. It's gonna take a few more years of this to recharge underground sources. On the other hand, the drought measures pushed on the public (cut back on showers!) is a sham. Domestic use of water is less than 20% of total. The real losers were/are farmers, and no amount of domestic water conservation is going to make any difference in the end.
