"French President François Hollande announced Thursday that he will not run for re-election, citing his unpopularity and likely inability to garner enough support."

That's pronounced gar-NAY in French.

Hollande's popularity is at 4%. I just typo'd "poopularity" for some reason. Must be my French accent.
He is the first French president since the war not to attempt to run for re-election.

François Fillon, the right’s presidential candidate and the favourite to win next spring, said Hollande had “admitted with lucidity that his obvious failure stopped him going any further”. Fillon, who last week called Hollande’s presidency “pathetic”, said Hollande’s presidency was ending in a “political shambles”.
"The war" means The Second World War.

You may remember when LBJ did something of the sort in 1968.

Being unpopular should never stop you but really? 4 percent?

On the other hand, given the relative popularity of American socialists I need to rethink my opinion of the collective intelligence of the French vs. the Americans.

This is what happens when a Scientific Progressive becomes France's President.

This is a "socialist" president who owns three (3) chateaux on the Riviera.

I nominate Bernie Sanders to run to replace him. You say he can't run because he isn't French? But he ran for the Democratic nomination although he's not a Democrat. Let's show the Frogs what a REAL socialist looks like!

Send Obama there. Historically, the only requirement to lead France is to have a deep disdain for the US.

The bold Trump smiling while eating frog legs spooked him.

Why do they mispronounce their own word?

Garnering votes sounds like vote fraud to me. In California they openly store their visiting Mexican citizens' votes in Bodegas.

Interesting that both Le Monde and the BBC seem to attribute Hollande's unpopularity in part to his 'criticism of Muslim immigrants' and his statement that there are 'too many immigrants' in France. The MSM in France and Britain appear to be as hopelessly out of touch as our own.

Champlaine garnered lots of North America for France, but he could not pronounce it right enough to keep it.

The French have been served very badly by politicians since DeGaulle.

They are figuring it out. They are still trying to overcome the Revolution. It's been 220 years and they are still not over it.

That's the problem with socialism: eventually you run out of other people's votes.

Poopularity. I love it. We need the word, though not in the context of François Hollande. Poopularity is bullshit popularity, which is the kind of popularity Barack Obama enjoys, where a president is technically popular in the polls, but is in reality roundly disdained as feckless and arrogant. Trump is arrogant, but if the Ford and Carrier deals are any indication he has some justification for his pomposity. Obama has spent eight years proving he was never qualified for high office. Everything he has turned his hand too, and there aren't that many, has turned to poop, and yet his opinion of himself has never been allowed to drift below 11 (I and me are almost as prevalent in his speeches as the). Unfortunately for Obama and Hillary Clinton many people were embarrassed to tell pollsters what they really thought of Obama, hence the consistently high approval rates. If there was any truth in those polls Hillary would have cruised to a win.

Of course Obama set himself and Hillary up for an historic drubbing. He and his myrmidons in the MSM made it clear in 2008 that any criticism of Obama was racism. Consequently the voices that could have corrected Obama's lawless and ineffective policies were cowed into silence or false concord. Who wants to be pummeled as a racist by some news anchor or blog troll? Not many. Only the most cantankerous fuck you very much types are immune. Hillary tried to the same thing (and her shills are still at it!) except they wanted to damn all critics as misogynists. The voters had had quite enough of that tactic and humiliated Hillary and her propagandists media in revenge.

I prefer béarnaise. Hollande is a combination of bland and sour, just like his stupid sauce.

It's nice to see any socialist humiliated, but I fear his heir apparent isn't the man France needs to save her. Fillon strikes me as disturbingly flavorless, like a generic political hack whose watch at the helm has come in due course. France is headed for the rocks. The last thing the French ship of state needs is a "steady hand on the tiller".

At least Italy is putting up a fight.

I guess when ISIS flies their flag over the Vatican, we will know that the fight was too little and too late.

[Not that I give a crap about the Vatican or that lame excuse for a 'pope']

In other European news, the most 2nd most popular baby name in Britain is Muhamed and 40% of British Muslims believe in the imposition of Sharia law. That gives Great Britain about 1,000,000 Islamists living within their borders.

I think she actually has a good chance. At least she will give Fillon a good run for his money. The populist toothpaste is out of the tube, I think, in all of Europe.

Surely the Socialists will run someone in the first round? No?

I could easily see Le Pen and Fillon splitting enough of the electorate to at least allow the Socialist candidate to reach the head-to-head runoff. Then it is the first round between Fillon and Le Pen that is interesting.
