"Former Senator Bob Dole, acting as a foreign agent for the government of Taiwan..."

"... worked behind the scenes over the past six months to establish high-level contact between Taiwanese officials and President-elect Donald J. Trump’s staff, an outreach effort that culminated last week in an unorthodox telephone call between Mr. Trump and Taiwan’s president."

He is one powerful 90 year old.

Taiwan thought Trump's chance of winning was good enough that he was worth pursuing since last May?

MacMacConnell म्हणाले...

Bob Dole's dry sense of humor is still epic.

AllenS म्हणाले...

Since the article is from the New York Times, it could be fake news.

Imagine the nerve of a President-elect talking on the phone to a democratically elected ally at the risk of alienating a Communist dictator. Unconscionable

Hmm.

'Jimmy Carter, acting as foreign agent for the government of the Palestinians...'

Nope, nothing pejorative in those sentences at all.

I think the press is going to have a really hard time with Trump not being Obama.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

My reaction: Bob Dole is still alive?

The wording foreign agent is odd. Why not lobbyist?

jacksonjay म्हणाले...

Yessireee! Makin Murica Great Agin! Doubt very seriously that Trump Inc had anything to do with any of this here. They was too busy workin them Japanese fellers to worry bout workin the Chinese! Bob Dole was just swampin for Democracy! Besides, he ain't shot nobody on Fifth Ave yet!

bleh म्हणाले...

Foreign agent makes me think of Nazi saboteur, not retired senator-turned-lobbyist.

Huh? I thought this was just a crazy spur-of-the-moment taking-his-eye-off-the-ball proof-that-he-isn't-fit-to-control-the-nuclear-codes?

Trump, like W. before him, is simultaneously a brilliant master schemer and blithering bumbling idiot. Double agent, so to speak...

Francisco D म्हणाले...

I still recall what Newt Gingrich called Dole about 20 years ago, "The tax collector for the welfare state."

Dole did a good job pretending to be a conservative when he wanted to run against Billy Jeff.

Hagar म्हणाले...

The NYT had better watch their terms. "Government of Taiwan" is a no-no.

My name goes here. म्हणाले...

The government if Taiwan is a natural ally. I know it. You know it. Bob Dole knows it. My Name Goes here knows it. The American People know it.

Gabriel म्हणाले...

Ooooh! A "foreign agent"! How sinister! Divided loyalties, no doubt, or perhaps rootless cosmopolitanism.

The USA always picks the loser side.

Mainland China can roll over those pimps in about an hour.

We need to stop dealing with them. The communists won. Let's end the Mexican standoff, because we can't afford to bring in all the refugee's that will run here.

He is a real conservative, except for his relationship with Archer Daniels Midland, which disappeared after he left the Senate. He used to be called" the Senator from ADM."

The original term was "Root Canal Republican." The last real balanced budget was when Eisenhower was president. The fake budget of Clinton was after Congress raided Social Security.

Dole was conservative but on the take, like his fellows.

Lance म्हणाले...

Well done NYT tracking down the connection. Now go back and find out who lobbied Pres. Obama on behalf of Iran, and how much they were paid. Then do the same for Cuba.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

Since the article is from the New York Times, it almost certainly is fake news.

@AllenS, I fixed it for you.

'll never forgive Dole for the ADA, that abomination of nanny government run riot.

This just proves Trump is crazy like a Fox. While the Coast Media Elite freaks out, he knows exactly what he's doing.

HoodlumDoodlum म्हणाले...

Wait wait wait wait---are you telling me that former politicians, former officeholders, and former high level bureaucrats are allowed to work with law firms and lobbying firms and use their personal connections and years of experience to try and influence government behavior, and they're paid money for that service to some client?!

Holy shit, that's outrageous! When did this start? There really ought to be some kind of investigation--Trump can't be allowed to get away with this. Such a scary new development; I'm glad this is something the NYTimes and liberal Media put effort into uncovering and fighting against.

fivewheels म्हणाले...

"because we can't afford to bring in all the refugee's that will run here."

Can anyone imagine a group of refugees that would be more educated, motivated, productive and grateful to be here than the ones we'd get from Taiwan?

Unknown म्हणाले...

Heh, I laugh at Coupe's faith in China's military versus Taiwan.

There's something called the Pacific Ocean in between them, and it's pretty far. Like 90 miles or so. Not even China can march troops across the Formosa strait. They can't pull a Korean war style assault here.

So that means naval or airborne attack. Taiwan, not coincidentally, has a relatively strong navy and airforce.

If it was easy, China would have done it long ago.

" ... Delores Tucker, youse a motherfucker
Instead of tryin' to help a nigga you destroy a brother
Worse than the others, Bill Clinton, Mr. Bob Dole
You're too old to understand the way the game is told
You're lame so I gotta hit you with the hot facts
Want some on lease? I'm makin' millions, niggas top that
They wanna censor me; they'd rather see me in a cell
Livin' in hell, only a few of us'll live to tell
Now everybody talkin' bout us I could give a fuck I'd be the first one to bomb and cuss
Nigga tell me how you want it"
