Lake Wingra — at noon today.

A gentle light, a warm enough day, but it looks bleak in the photograph.

Please talk about anything you like in the comments.

In some ways I hate to spoil the pretty picture but I must. In yesterday's Mpls Star Tribune it was revealed that the AVERAGE (state approved) increase in personal health insurance premiums for 2017 will be 50%. The range will be from the mid 40s to 67% . I thought I was being hyperbolic when I predicted a 50% increase. I wasn't.

Sixth wettest September on record in Madison. 8-1/2" of rain, 5" over normal. We have a lake house rented for a month up north and I'm stuck in town trying to finish the deck. If it rains one more day I'm liable to go postal.

AtmoGuy म्हणाले...

It wasn't pretty, but my Wolverines got the win over a better-than-expected Badgers team. And my son's fifth-grade football team got their first win of the season. All in all, a good day.

There is a real Cat. 5 hurricane in the Caribbean that is headed north like it may hit New England next weekend. And that is the middle of our New England Cruise starting Thursday from Boston to New Brunswick. What a revolting development that is.

mockturtle म्हणाले...

The Washington Huskies beat Stanford 44-6. I didn't get to see the game but I'm mighty proud. :-)

mockturtle म्हणाले...

Tradguy, I'm sorry to hear about the hurricane interfering with your travel plans. Hope the predictions are wrong. Bon voyage?

AtmoGuy म्हणाले...

I watched that Stanford-Washington game last night. I was surprised how easily Washington dominated up front on both sides of the ball. I think UW is legit this year. Chris Petersen is a really good coach.

HT म्हणाले...

Watching Stanford USC revealed a Stanford team that was plodding and not worthy of being in the top 10, since they barely won that game. I thought Michigan would manhandle Wisc worse than they did. Otherwise, it was not a good game and Michigan was not as impressive as I thought they would be. OSU was very impressive, as usual.

Original Mike म्हणाले...

Tradguy - If that forecast is by the same people forcasting Madison weather the last two months, you've got nothing to worry about.

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

We could be on the last Delta plane from Atlanta Thursday, which shpuld beat this slow moving storm to NY by several days. But high winds may catch up to the ship the week after we sail, unless weather prayer still works.

This was a sad Football day. Many of my teams barely lost. Football prayer is weak
this year.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@tradguy, a bunch of years ago I was on vacation in the Caribbean when a Cat 4 decided to sideswipe the island we were staying on. It's nothing to mess around with! Fortunately our resort was well uphill from the beach so all the wife and I had to do was hunker down and hope that our "good for 150 mph winds" windows and sliding glass door lived up to their billing (they did). The next morning the beach bar was totally gone -- nothing remained but its foundation. A bunch of boats had been pushed well up onto the beach, and not a single deciduous tree was still standing (however only one palm had been damaged). It was a mess, but the resourceful islanders had one of the resort's restaurants up and serving (a limited menu!) by the early evening.

A reasonable man would think that'd be worth a mention in the presidential debate.

This is why you can't show a tax return to a leftie:

NYT: Although Mr. Trump’s taxable income in subsequent years is as yet unknown, a $916 million loss in 1995 would have been large enough to wipe out more than $50 million a year in taxable income over 18 years.

'Wipe out' taxable income? Our income tax system requires we only pay tax on income we actually receive, not imagined income 'wiped out' by a loss.

I used to believe lefties said shit like this to trick people into thinking political opponents are getting away with something but it happens so frequently I've begun to believe they can't wrap their brains around what a reporting period is, as if there's a magic 'reset' that happens on Jan 1.

ex-pat living in the philippines... story of President Duterte's continuing dissatisfaction with US policy isn't covered by the MSM except for the catchy Mama is a Whore soundbites. He is warning USA he will discontinue joint military exercises, and courting Russia and China... Sure, could be much bluffing, but he has genuine distaste for all that is Obama, and Obama minions, especially the US Ambassador here (gay), and the drumbeat of LGBT celebrations and rights, not to mention criticism of the "extra-judicial" targeting (and killing) of drug lords. In essence, USA is blowing it here over little stuff.... Not sure where this is going coz there are several contradictions of interests (contested waters/islands... terrorists in the south). Anyway, its a big 'ole dent in the Asian Pivot that gets little ink from what I can see... Ironically, his remarks have driven the USD valuation to a seven year high against the peso.... good for his OFW workers and us ex-pats... Not sure if a Trump victory would heal this, but those two share a lot in common (which filipinos here recognise...).

I've forgotten how tax losses work, since Turbotax has been taking care of it with no attention on my part for years. But basically you've paid tax on income that turns out not to have been income and they're letting you get it back, or half of it back.

I posted the 50+% increase in Minnesota health insurance premiums on FB yesterday. A hard core lefty labelled it a "made up story". That's what we are dealing with.

Speaking of Minnesota, my (mediocre) Nittany Lions beat the Gophers in OT last night. Exciting comeback win.

I dislike word trends. "Craft" has been a trendy word for some months or year(s). People can't say 'directed' or 'wrote' or 'produced,' they must now say crafted.

As a retired civil/sanitary engineer, I'm always interested in seeing pictures of the lakes around Madison. They played a key role in our understanding of the eutrophication process. Also, a key figure in that development was the environmental chemist Claire N. Sawyer, then at Wisky, later at MIT. When I was much younger I knew him personally. He also advised a raft of famous sanitary engineers at MIT, most of whom I met during the course of my so-called career.

"Bad behavior" used to mean stuff like talking with your mouth full or farting in public. Now it means shootings and various other criminal activity.

What did people think real change was going to look like?

It's good you walk so much.

There is no jumping in football.

Also from that game, apparently you can not rush the punter if you play opposite the center.

The behavior of fans at this year's Ryder Cup is hard to fathom. We've been to 6 European Ryder Cups, and all of the "heckling" has been good natured ribbing, nothing approaching the level of venom directed at Rory and Sergio, among others. I'm all for the home team, but something has gone awry this year. There seems to be no trace of "Minnesota nice" or "Wisconsin nice". The fans at one hole actually sang "Sweet Caroline" to Rory, in a reference to his breakup in 2014 with his former fiancee.

Yes, the attitude of some spectators has strayed from appropriate golf behavior and wandered into Duke's Cameron Crazies territory, where jeering is researched and calculated for maximum disruption in the the name of home game advantage. Shame, really...

Interestingly, earlier in the week Danny Willett apologized to the US team for derogatory comments made by his writer brother in an article regarding the boorish behavior of US fans. Now it seems the fans more than lived up to nearly every accusation.

On the tax returns: Saw the reporters on ABC News saying they did not know who mailed the tax returns. What are the odds they came from the IRS? What are the odds of an investigation? We send our sensitive and personal financial info to the IRS under promise of law that those returns will be kept confidential. If the law matters not a whit to the Feds, why should it matter to the people? I am starting to think that the President himself is open to impeachment:

- Comey's not remembering Mill's 2012 email to the Clinton Foundation in 2012 while under oath to Congress, despite having made the weighty decision to offer Mill's and four others immunity

- The Benghazi skullduggery and arrest of the film-maker

- The President himself sending email to the ClintonEmail.com server using a false name

- Bill's visit to Loretta'a plan (and Loretta still being employed to this day)

- Now the leaking of legally protected tax returns

All in the name of winning elections. This smell's as bad as Watergate and is a poison injected into the veins and arteries of our democracy.

Washington was smart enough to sell the drunk to SC where he is suing them for breach of contract for firing him when he showed up drunk at practice. I think Pat Haden is getting senile. I hope Lynn Swann does better. He ran for the GOP nomination in Pennsylvania a few years ago.

SC finally did something right with the freshman QB, Darnold. He got the team going last night and they even began to resemble old Pete Carroll teams from long ago. Weird season. I saw a player ejected from a game yesterday for "targeting" when a worse example by a UCLA player last weekend was ignored.

I watched a bit of Ryder Cup but too many good football games on.

Next weekend in Tucson house hunting. I may finally be ready to abandon California after 60 years. The insanity is getting insane.

Wow. I assumed they were public records.

Gangster government.

Carol म्हणाले...

They were state tax returns only.

It looks like Trump could have taken net operating losses back and forward, but it's hard to tell from what I saw because it was entered in "Other Income" on one of the state returns. This came from the 1040. He could get 20 years of losses out of that 900 million loss.

This is legally allowed, but it's BS to say he "owed" it to shareholders to deduct them off his personal returns. Still, who wouldn't?

If lefties ever start looking closely at business losses and deductions, watch out.
