11 Shades of Obtuseness about Donald Trump's Dirty Words.

Let me give an example of something I am seeing. With 55K shares on Facebook:

That's so obtuse, in so many ways. Let's count:

1. "50 Shades of Grey"? Hadn't seen that talked about in a while. (Wait. There is this.)

2. Boasting of committing what sounds like criminal sexual assault is not the mere saying of words. The size of the outrage isn't about the words as bad words, but the words as evidence of actions allegedly taken.

3. The outrage isn't limited to women. Men, too, are outraged.

4. Many people — women and men — are fine with using the words "fuck" and "pussy" in private conversation.

5. The words "fuck" and "pussy" can be used in sentences that express contempt and disregard for other human beings, and the outrage against Trump's words has to do with what the words express in the sentences actually spoken. Many excellent sentences can be made using those words — sentences that can be received with favor by women who hate what Trump said.

6. People read novels and see movies about all sorts of things, including horrible things. Stories about murder and torture and all kinds of physical and psychological abuse are very popular. The effect is titillating, but that doesn't mean people want these things actually to happen to them.

7. You may love a particular character in a story, because he's interesting and exciting and transgressive, but that doesn't mean you want him to be President. I love the movie "My Dinner with Andre," but Andre Gregory would be a terrible President. Last night, I watched the movie "Willard." Willard is a fascinating character. Watching him bond with rats, train them, gather them into suitcases and carry them into the office to unleash havoc was fascinating... oh, watch out, pussy!...

... but Willard would not make a good candidate for President. Neither would Hannibal Lecter.

8. It would be interesting to see those rats overrun the White House... in a movie. But not in real life!

9. Fantasy time is over. Put down the novel. Turn off the movie. Face the grim reality of picking a suitable President.

10. I said it 2 years ago: I'm for boring. I mean for President. I'm not talking about novels and movies and sexual fantasies.

11. "OK. Yes, we are bored. We're all bored now..."

"... but has it ever occurred to you... that the process that creates this boredom that we see in the world now may very well be a self-perpetuating, unconscious form of brainwashing, created by a world totalitarian government based on money, and that all of this is much more dangerous than one thinks, and it's not just a question of individual survival... but that somebody who's bored is asleep, and somebody who's asleep will not say no?"

It's already happened. Back in the 90s. You supported letting the rats continue their residence. And not because they weren't rats.

I have no patience for this sort of thing or Trump (though I will vote against Hillary). The thing is, if you don't realize that all high power, alpha males used to talk like this when they were alone, you never spent any time around them. It's an obvious outlet for a male in power which some may resist, but most?

Donald's real error was thinking he wouldn't get caught. Why do you think all those other power hungry billionaires don't run for president? They're smart enough to know better.

Whether criminal sexual assault is a big deal depends on what's being called a criminal sexual assault today.

Rape went down the tubes long ago.

Is this criminal sexual assault criminal sexual assault, or just criminal sexual assault, where the woman's interest is protected as always by the conventions of the situation.

It's not a Bill Clinton style assault.

The hysterical reaction is over the word pussy, in fact, in this case. How Trump talked about women. It shows disrespect, meaning disrespect to the feminist narrative.

Bill C: "I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn't get there. And she was married. Then all of a sudden I see her, she's now got the big phony tits and everything. She's totally changed her look ... never Trump.

Loretta: "Bill, what are you talking about? And don't believe the rumors ... she and W never married. He stayed with Laura."

At that point in the audio, Bill C and Loretta appear to notice the American people waiting to be x-rayed, patted down and escorted through airport security in the 120 degree Phoenix heat.

Loretta: "Your people are hot as s---, waiting in the line,"

Bill C: "Whoa! Whoa!"

Bill C: "I've got to use some Tic Tacs, just in case I start kissing them. You know I'm automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything."

Loretta: "Whatever you want."

Bill C: "Grab them by the p---y. You can do anything."

Loretta: "What are you really saying?"

Bill C: "I'm just saying that's how you get grand kids Loretta. It's all about the grand kids ... Remember that Loretta, and you will go far under Hillary."

Interpretation of his words as a description of assault is absurd. He was very clearly describing what women let him do.

Trump will respond by increasing personal attacks on Clinton, but the outcome is likely to drive voters to Johnson/Weld, not the GOP.

Stories like the one below if they get the attention that a Trump barrage can give them, will seriously damage Clinton:

Is the Clinton Campaign deliberately overcharging small donors?

Observer reporter Liz Crokin spoke to a Wells Fargo employee who works in the fraud department.

"We get up to a hundred calls a day from Hillary's low-income supporters complaining about multiple unauthorized charges," the employee, who asked to remain anonymous, told Crokin. The source added that they had not received any calls about the Trump campaign and donations.

The source said this has been going on since the spring, and that the campaign stops after it has taken a little less than $100 from a one-time donor.

"We don't investigate fraudulent charges unless they are over $100," the source said. "The Clinton campaign knows this, that's why we don't see any charges over the $100 amount, they'll stop the charges just below $100. We'll see her campaign overcharge donors by $20, $40 or $60 but never more than $100."

Everything Obama said about Hillary in 2008 is true, and most Democrats know it. She corrupts everything she is involved in. Her clueless blind ambition will destroy the Democratic Party for a generation.

Johnson/Weld can surge past 34% in enough states to win as the two most disliked candidates in US History slime each other.

2. Boasting of committing what sounds like criminal sexual assault is not the mere saying of words. The size of the outrage isn't about the words as bad words, but the words as evidence of actions allegedly taken.

This seems like a huge leap. I find it hard to believe that Donald Trump thinks he committed a criminal sexual assault, considering he is relaying the story and laughing about it. I find it hard to believe the person who heard the story thought it was a case of sexual assault considering he was laughing along as he heard the story. And also it is important to recognize the fact that the woman he is talking about has not come forward to accuse Trump of sexual assault, despite having ten plus years to do so. Also, one important statement of the story is that he says that because he is a star women agree to activity that is much more forward than normal. Plus, another point of the story is that even though he ultimately wanted to have sex with her, he didn't. He stopped.

So what is in favor of reading into the story that it is really talking about sexual assault? Trump never describes her verbally consenting to the specific activity. As a guy who has heard his fair share of sex stories. None of which I thought in any way described a case of sexual assault, I've never heard one that inclduded the guy saying "And then I asked her if she wanted me to do..." "and then she nodded and said yes". Even if a statement like this did occur, it would seem odd to include in a raunchy story about the event.

There is evidence that both Trump and Clinton probably had sex with underage girls while either on Epstein's island or plane. The evidence suggests that this probably happened more times with Clinton than Trump, but Trump's likely participation is why this line has not been pushed hard by the Trump camp (the Epstein stuff is mutually destructive).
I think they are all sickos and none deserve to hold high office. But if its not fatal for the Clintons to engage/support this behavior (and please don't argue that Hillary knew not what Bill did, including the prior likely rapes - she willingly sacrificed the women abused by Bill as the price to be paid for riding his coattails to the top) then why is is for Trump?

From Instapundit:

JACK HELLNER: Trump’s Dirty Talk vs. Hillary’s Corruption. It’s no surprise that the political class is less offended by the corruption:
In the past week:

– Justice drops the case against a gunrunner from Hillary’s Libya fiasco whose testimony would certainly have harmed Obama and Hillary.

– Evidence surfaced that the White House participated in the cover-up of Hillary’s violation of national security laws with her private server even though they said they absolutely knew nothing about the server and would not interfere with an investigation.

– We have learned more this week about how the investigation of Hillary by the Justice Department and FBI was a pure sham as they gave immunity to so many, took so much stuff off limits, and even carried out the destruction of evidence. The email investigation was pretend, just like the IRS investigation and any supposed investigation of the Clinton Foundation. It is clear that the White House, Justice Department, State Department, and IRS are working specifically to protect Obama and Hillary instead of working for the American people.

– Aleppo and Syria are deteriorating rapidly despite Obama and Kerry being extremely tough and telling Russia and Assad to stop it.

– Obama partially blamed the Civil War in Syria on a drought he says was caused by humans. That is one of the most ignorant statements ever. The war is because Assad is a tyrant, and the Mideast is essentially a desert that has had continued droughts for millennia.

– An NBC News man topped Obama’s stupidity by saying the worthless Paris climate agreement would stop hurricanes.

– Obamacare is collapsing rapidly. The multiple lies to pass the law are more obvious every day. The law is greatly harming the middle class and small employers and reducing the potential for full-time jobs.

– An NSA contractor who committed the same crime as Hillary by keeping classified documents at home on several nonsecure devices is under arrest. Why isn’t Hillary?

The media, of course, don’t focus on any of these things. Instead they trot out a tape of Trump talking dirty about women eleven years ago.

Well, a ban on dirty-talking doesn’t threaten the whole feedlot. A ban on corruption and incompetence would put them all out of business. . . .

What everyone was thinking of but could not cite...

From Chapter 12 of The Godfather, by Mario Puzo:

...He was ready now. He put his drink down on the long inlaid cocktail table and turned his body toward her. He was very sure, very deliberate, and yet tender. There was nothing sly or lecherously lascivious in his caresses. He kissed her on the lips while his hands rose to her breasts. His hand fell to her warm thighs, the skin so silky to his touch. Her returning kiss was warm but not passionate and he preferred it that way right now. He hated girls who turned on all of a sudden as if their bodies were motors galvanized into erotic pumpings by the touching of a hairy switch.
Then he did something he always did, something that had never yet failed to arouse him. Delicately and as lightly as it was possible to do so and still feel something, he brushed the tip of his middle finger deep down between her thighs. Some girls never even felt that initial move toward lovemaking. Some were distracted by it, not sure it was a physical touch because at the same time he always kissed them deeply on the mouth. Still others seemed to suck in his finger or gobble it up with a pelvic thrust. And of course before he became famous, some girls had slapped his face. It was his whole technique and usually it served him well enough.
Sharon’s reaction was unusual. She accepted it all, the touch, the kiss, then shifted her mouth off his, shifted her body ever so slightly back along the couch and picked up her drink. It was a cool but definite refusal. It happened sometimes. Rarely; but it happened. Johnny picked up his drink and lit a cigarette.

@Althouse, first of all do you see the straight line, the connections, from your foolish vote in 2008 to Trump's candidacy today? It would be good if you could think before you vote this time.

Secondly, we've had rude, crude presidents before. Within your lifetime and mine we had JFK boinking Marilyn Monroe and a gangster's moll (among others), LBJ forcing his attentions on female reporters, and Dick Nixon's crude language (go read the transcripts of his tapes), not to mention Bill Clinton boinking interns and assaulting Kathleen Willey. Today we have Barack Obama flipping off people in public and VP Joe Biden skinny dipping in front of female Secret Service agents.

Does any of that bother you? Or are you only bothered when the mainstream media make a fuss about something? Perhaps it's in your nature to give a pass to Democrat politicians and hold Republicans to a higher standard? You can forget all about that, ma'am. This time the Republicans have put up someone who will get right down in the mud with your beloved Democrats. Don't like it? Go get a time machine and tell yourself to vote for McCain, or to contribute the limit to Romney.

The treasury is printing money like there is no tomorrow and cannot stop or the game of Musical Chairs for Financial Ruin will crash the economy of the entire world.

Drug use among the unemployed/permanent underclass has skyrocketed as hope has evaporated, and the response from the DEA is to reduce the stocks of painkillers by 25% and attack the medical profession for prescribing them. The Heroin Cartel thanks you profusely.

The Middle East, always a thorny area of the world considering everyone who lives there hates all their neighbors. has been turned into a bloodbath. Our current leadership has made a bad situation much worse. Their warriors will come here to kill us. Count on it.

Our current leadership appears to be trying to start a war with Russia. As a child in the 1960's I still remember when we were in a cold war with Russia, and we respected the power of a nuclear weapon to rain death down on our cities. Has this possibility been completely forgotten or are our leaders simply so arrogant or careless that they accept that amount of devastation as something our nation can 'absorb' like a terror attack?

Lastly, I believe you and your friends are responsible for this pervasive attempt to silence any opposition to your schemes with Political Correctness. That is simply evil. The damage you are doing to an entire generation of young Americans will be with us for decades, and may well lead to the dissolution of our nation. If that begins no one can predict where it will end.

Therefore, I am as of this day withdrawing my consent as a member of 'The Governed.' I will pay my taxes as one coerced at the point of a gun. I will obey such laws as I deem legal and just. I will resist with all legal means absolutely every thing that you propose or subscribe to, whether a good idea or not because it is inevitably the fruit of a poisoned tree. No amount of persuasion will ever make me believe in anything you stand for ever again.
Sincerely,

An American Citizen.

Ryan is a good reason why we have Trump. Ryan was in a position to stop much of Obama's lawless behavior merely by returning to "Regular Order"in the House. That would have meant 12 Appropriations bills debated and passed. Obama would have had to veto 12 bills to shut down government. There were ways to use the rules we have followed for 200 years to oppose the wreckage of representative government by this leftist insurgency.

Harry Reid used the "Continuing Resolution" to avoid requiring his Democrat Senators to make unpopular votes.

Without her prejudice, her statement stands reason on its head. As evidence of actions actually taken, his words provide evidence of his innocence!

I am reminded of storied white Southern juries considering the guilt of blacks on trial. I am reminded of Democrats playing on the frustrations of female voters to get them to mark a ballot as a VOTE FOR WOMEN! Sad.

Professor Althouse, in this case, the words establish his innocence of the crime of sexual assault. You wish to convict him for his thoughts, as you project them. Ah yes, criminal thoughts - thought crimes - safe spaces - trigger statements...we get it.

Reposting from the previous thread.

This is getting absurd. The actual information coming out about Crooked Hillary and the Dems just gets worse and worse, while the press and the elites first concentrate on Trump's illegally obtained 20 year old tax return, and then some potty mouth braggago. While this has been going on, we have found out that:
- FBI investigation into email just looks worse and worse. FBI did deals with coconspiritors (e.g. chief of staff Cheryl Mills), letting them be illegally act and be treated as Clinton's attorneys, shielding their talks back when both were on the federal payroll.. And, instead of just seizing their laptops, as the FBI usually does, they agree to destroy them after a desultory search.
- The emails on the server were deleted after they had been subpoenaed by Congress and the federal courts by order of Clinton atty.
- DNC spreadsheet showing political contributions to major dems in one column, name of contributor in another, and TARP funds received in a third.
- emails showing illegal ccordination between Clinton campaign and Sorros organizations
- scandal going state wide in swing state of Dems registering dead people to vote
- 2nd debate in a row where moderator openly helped Dem over Rep.
- No interest whatsoever about what was in Crooked's ear the last two times that the two candidates met.
- TV show caught giving Clinton questions before she went on the air. Evidence that the network putting on one of those two times they met gave her people the questions in advance too.
- Her health appears to continue to decline. Spending a week resting up for the debate this week. She doesn't have to bother campaigning, since she has the MSM to do it for her.
- both the reset with Russia and regime change in Syria are falling apart before our eyes this week.
- More that I have probably forgotten.

Trump started hitting back last night with a retweat of tweats by Juanita Broderick, reminding us that Crooked's husband raped her. So, I expect another of these October surprises to be picked up by the MSM this week to keep the ball rolling, and our eyes off of Clinton.

Why did Ryan continue this practice when it worked against his party ?

I know it takes a modicum of Civics knowledge to understand this. Ryan knows. Why did he do it ?

Paul Ryan and all the other establishment republicans have Stockholm syndrome. They have been in and around democrats in congress, the administration, various government agencies, and the national media so much that they look on them as benevolent captors. They immediately give credence to whatever narrative the democrats put out there. Whenever something 'bad' comes out about a republican, the establishment republicans initial instinct is to buy into the democrat's narrative and play defense, usually by distancing themselves from accused republican and joining in by chanting "Shame!".

Democrats almost never do this. Democrats almost always circle the wagon. And when asked about their colleagues malfeasance they always change the subject or paint it as a naked republican political attack. Now it helps that they have a largely complicit national media working for them but republicans need to emulate the democrats in this fashion. This is why so many in the republican party disliked the establishment.

I think it was Ted Cruz in one of the debates who recounted why the base was upset, and he described the Republicans saying "just get us the house and then we can do something." And then the voters turned out and got republicans the house but they did nothing. Then they said, "Just get us the Senate and then we can do something." And then the voters turned out and gave them the Senate and still nothing happened. The establishment Republicans look like weak, feckless pushovers to the base. And the establishment is surprised that the base chose a strong man like Donald Trump?

Bruce Hayden म्हणाले...

All hidden and ignored, so that you can be induced to freak out about something that Trump said in in private, locker room conversation 11 years ago. The statement above is one of the best defenses of Trump that I’ve seen. It requires a working imagination and the ability to intellectually connect some fairly obvious dots but yes, Trump may talk about sexual harassment but that doesn’t mean he wants to actually grab pussies. Thanks, Ms. Althouse.

How is it that when, as a candidate for President, Mr. Trump said that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and people would still vote for him, nobody claimed that he had admitted to homicide,; but when, in what he thought was a private conversation 11 years ago, he said that women would let celebrities grab them by the pussy, that's supposed to be an admission of sexual assault?

The common sense reading of both statements is that they were hyperbole, right? Let's check for some context: is Donald Trump someone known to use hyperbole on a regular basis?

Public corruption combined with incompetence is not acceptable just because it is boring. Richard Daley would have been a boring president, and seemed competent.

I guess Althouse would view Boss Tweed as a better candidate than Trump, too.

No doubt, most of the male lawyers in your old law firm have too, and some probably engaged in it. Probably not the female attys though, because the guys there are probably too smart to allow it in their presence. It is a male dominance displaylay, pure and simple.

And, yes, wealth and power are like a super aphrodisiac for a lot of women. If you don't see it, i suspect it is because you are too cerebral. The stories are legion in DC, and, yes, in Vegas where my partner grew up. She grew up in an environment where guys expected women to want to have sex with them, merely because they were somewhat famous. And many did. Plenty of good looking women willing to jump into bed with merely a snap of the fingers (or, we found with Kobe Bryant in Vail, just bent over the chair). Just the way the world works.

Trump has to be forgiven this and elected in spite of it, else no one who has not bleachbitted their lives is ever going to be able to do this. I don't want to live in the grasp of the status quo. The lords of ticky tacky must be overthrown, whatever the cost.

After Romney being ticky-tacky fouled, no one could possibly think that Trump, or any other candidate on Earth, would be 100 times cleaner than Romney. I'm sure no president in the past hundred years or so was cleaner than Romney. So the tactic is not to play the game. The tactic is to not play the game, to stop the game from being played. Trump wins or it's all over.

It's really that simple. Everyone who has said s*** or f*** on Blogger is dead. Google will not protect our anonymity past the point where it suits them. All you people - I'm not going to insult you; I'm not going to call you prissy and things like that. You apparently have a high or rather I should say a low tolerance for superficial improprieties of a candid nature. I hope you have a high tolerance for what Hillary is going to give you because it's coming if she wins. She will have no reason to be reasonable. Full steam ahead, doubling down, all of it, for as long as she and hers can keep spinning.

But p'raps it won't be long because I repeat that the malicious incompetence of the present clique will soon lead us to real disaster such as no one here is seriously imagining.

If that's what you want, you know how to get it. If you don't want that, you have exactly one choice. Sorry, please vote Trump. Hillary is never sorry for anything. Why should she be? No one has made her sorry. Now's your chance. Make her sorry.

I hear an exaggerated hypothetical to emphasize (very crudely) his point. (It's a rhetorical flourish he's known for.)

It's a crude point -- one you might well object to on its own -- made in an embarrassingly crude and ridiculously unpresidential way. The statement is bad enough on its own. Why the pretense that it's something more?

For the *Clinton Campaign* and their surrogates, the why is obvious. Everyone who hears their claim will either (1) believe it, which hurts Trump, or (2) go look up the actual words and spend more time absorbing the image of Trump saying crude things crudely, which hurts Trump. The lie help's Clinton whether it's believed or not.

What I find harder to understand is why so many people seem to believe the blatant misrepresentation of a statement they can read for themselves.

Right. And what has "boring" done for the country, lately? You actually think that "boring" is steering the ship of state properly? It's an auto-pilot with no self-correcting mechanism that is economically hollowing us out. Living in Madison, don't people make this evident to you? Even despite living in a cushy professor's neighborhood? You think the "justice" they cry about is an abstraction, with all these people living on the street?

How do you sleep at night? Have you ever volunteered, worked in a soup kitchen, got a view into the lives lived by people much poorer than yourself?

Economic privilege must be very boring.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together म्हणाले...

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Trump, like Hitler, is a symptom. Not the disease. Staying the course ensures that there will be many more Trumps down the line, much worse than before. And trust me, it will not get any more boring next time, either.

Just vote for stasis and stagnation and the establishment and let's see where it gets you.

The reason that I mentioned Ann's old law firm was that she worked for one of the top, most prestigious, law firms in the country. What are called "white shoe" law firms. (For any who think that she is a legal slouch - she isn't - these are 1% firms, recruiting mostly from the top 1% of LS grads nation wide). Which means that their senior partners are probably into seven figures, and their clientele is mainly Fortune 50 and billionaires. A lot who likely talk just like Trump. And dealing with that sort of client every day, some of the attys probably do the same.

Why is sex and sex talk tied so closely into male dominance? I think it is because the main purpose of power and wealth for males is for breeding opportunities, and those go to the dominant males, because they have the superior gene ethics. Or at least that is how many/most females emotionally think. We aren't, of course, alone there. The male bighorn sheep colliding so loudly this time of year a dozen miles east of us in MT are vying for breeding opportunities. The turkeys fanning their tails are doing the same. One's place in the male hierarchy determines to a great extent how often we can breed, and, in particular, the number and quality of the females that we can breed with. Best way of showing this dominance is to snap your fingers, and have a beautiful woman respond by willingly bed you. Or, by being willing to. When you cant do that, because there aren't any women present, then you can brag about it.

Trump's problem here is that he wasnt a politician then, so didn't have the sort of personal constraints that politicians learn very quickly to utilize. The stories are rampant out of DC of politicians acting worse, or, like WJC, far worse. But most of it is when they are drunk in a safe setting (around Dem partisans willing to cover for them). Making things words, Trump has been rich and famous for a long time, engaged during much of that time in glamorous pursuits, with a lot of beautiful women hanging around him much of the time. We are talking the guy who owned Miss USA and Miss Universe. One of the, if not the, most recognizable billionaires in the country. If he had wanted to bed a different beautiful woman every night, he probably could have. A true super alpha male, who partially got where he is today by making a production of his male dominance displays. So, while we may look wistfully back at a rich avid church goer as a candidate, Trump's alpha male dominance displays are good part of how he got the nomination, and why the election is still close. Was what he said bad? Yes, but likely no worse than is heard every week in the conference rooms at Ann's old law firm.

Mike Sylwester म्हणाले...

Boasting of committing what sounds like criminal sexual assault is not the mere saying of words. The size of the outrage isn't about the words as bad words, but the words as evidence of actions allegedly taken.

Let's understand the context of such a criminal sexual assault committed by a serial seducer such as Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, John Kennedy, Edward Kennedy, Warren Beatty and so forth.

The seducer flirts constantly with the young women who surround him. Some of the young women flirt back. The seducer escalates the flirting. The seducer has gone through many hundreds of such conversations. He is like a chess master who knows can deftly execute many openings and gambits. He is like a master salesman who knows all the customer objections and overcomes them persuasively.

As the seducer determines that he might be able to seduce the young woman, he gradually isolates her. His wingmen engage the young woman's girlfriends in conversations to prevent those girlfriends from inhibiting the young woman.

Gradually, the seducer isolates the young woman physically. He takes her alone to another bar. He takes her into his private office or his hotel room or his home.

There, he sits next to her on a couch. He puts his arm around her, hugs her, kisses her.

At some point of this gradual seduction, he might "grab her pussy".

That's the context of this criminal sexual assault.

-----

When Bill Clinton was a governor, he used state troopers as his wingmen. Gradually he had selected those troopers who responded positively when he talked about sex and about seducing women. Those particular troopers became his bodyguards, and they distracted bothersome girlfriends and sometimes managed to seduce those girlfriends.

Clinton used this method on Paula Jones -- just as he used it on countless other women who worked as government clerks, as nightclub singers, as restaurant waitresses and so forth. Many of these women were married to ordinary men who lacked Clinton's celebrity, success and charm.

Ted Kennedy used the method on a young woman, recently married, who worked on his Senate staff. Because of that seduction, his personal assistant Richard Burke rebelled and wrote the The Senator: My Ten Years With Ted Kennedy, which included this particular adultery story in the larger pattern of Kennedy's womanizing, alcoholism, vanity and vulgarity.

After Burke's book was published and became a famous, much-discussed, much-reviewed best-seller, Kennedy was elected to the Senate three more times before he died.

That's some context for this discussion about Trump's supposed "criminal sexual assault".

Thank you, Ann, for articulating a lot of the ideas that are percolating in my head as well as yours, apparently. I want to join you in "I'm for boring." I have always wanted my politicians to be workhorses, not show horses...

The correct word for people who will do anything for money is "workwhores."

Do you work on Wall Street? In finance, the professions, academia, venture capital or executive management?

What's that you say? Yes you do?

Unless you don't then I don't give a damn about your opinion.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Anything other than a tendentious reading of Trump's words in the Access Hollywood tape will show that Trump made a pass at the unnamed and married woman in past and was rebuffed. The rest of the quotes can't really be read as an admission of sexual assault since the underlying predicate, explicitly stated, is that it was consensual. You can try to assume he meant he had "grabbed the pussy" without consent (that would be sexual assault), but you are basically having to put actual words into his mouth at that point. However, even beyond this- reading this as a man who has heard similar stories from other men over the years, it is all but certain that the last part was an empty boast about what a woman let him get away with.

No, most men won't talk like this, but most men would and have been parties to conversations like this with men who do, and we generally don't condemn them for it at that moment, or even later on reflection. What I found most disturbing about the comments was that they came from a 60 year old man- the last time I heard such talk at such a crude linguistic level was from fraternity aged men. By the time men reach their 30s, they have found less crude ways to talk about sex and the women they would like to nail, as an example- I don't think I have heard a male older than 25 use the word pussy in this way, though I have certainly heard it from men older in the way it was used on Drudge for Ryan last night, and as a pejorative description of a coward.

All of this is surprising to hear from a woman who made the point about some taking Trump's speech too literally. What is missing here for me to take Althouse's point as important is a credible accusation of such actions. Maybe that is the next shoe to drop, but until it does, I can't really take any of what Trump is recorded as saying to be anything more than empty boasts of his sexual desirability.

Original Mike म्हणाले...

"Was he actually boasting about committing criminal sexual assault? If he was -- I'd be right there with you... but that's not what I hear at all. Not even close.

The statement is bad enough on its own. Why the pretense that it's something more?"

So that she can use it as the pretense of "How Trump lost me.". Althouse prides herself on her support for free speech, so for this episode to be used as the hook for her swing to Hillary, she needs it to be more than words.

I think Althouse panicked unnecessarily. With a month to go, Trump is sure to provide a more legitimate reason for her inevitable declaration for Hillary.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

A lot of men talk about hitting that and nailing that- I pretty much dismiss all such talk for the same reason I think most rap lyrics are fiction.

Now, Trump can be criticized for creating such a persona, but for me it is a minor issue since I believe most personae are artifices anyway. I believe none of us are the persons we project to others, and I give Trump a pass on this particular one because he hasn't spent most of his adulthood trying to be a politician, which is just a persona of another kind.

Mike Sylwester म्हणाले...

Hillary Clinton receives much secret information about Donald Trump's sex life. She receives tape recordings, private investigators' reports, media clippings, and miscellaneous allegations.

Sexless Hillary Clinton -- like sexless J. Edgar Hoover -- studies all this secret information resentfully, plotting to use it to punish the sexual sinners.

If money must be paid for tape recordings, then she knows wealthy Scientific Progressives who can and will provide millions of dollars secretly.

If Trump becomes President, he should ask the IRS to show him Billy Bush's income during the year 2016.

But why not in real life?
The desire for a government of a given emotional temperature seems more of an aesthetic preference than a practical one. A desire for a representative government at all also seems like a bit of trivial frippery under the circumstances.
You certainly dont have a representative government now, in any substantial sense.
I mentioned yesterday that Spain and Belgium have made do without a "government" for extended periods. This rather healthy situation is an artifact of multi-party parliamentary systems and is not possible in the US system. But it seems to me that the state of the public will in the US at this time could easily result in this if the structure of government just got out of the way.
History also is instructive. Much of the desire for this or that proves to be a matter of local fashion more than a substantial difference, based on actual results. And, of course, styles of government are more a consequence of underlying cultures than an independent cause. Governments are a consequence, not a cause.
Yeats rough beast, thats so given to slouching about, has shown up.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

It isn't impossible that the Bushes are the ultimate source of this. Sure, Billy Bush probably didn't have a copy of the recording, but he almost certainly remembered the conversation, and that is all one would really need to track down the actual video and audio.

Bad Lieutenant म्हणाले...

Exactly. Also there is no evidence that he himself did this. I gave the example of kids talking about a martial arts expert's ability to perform some impossible feat. Doesn't mean the kids themselves can, or ever did, knock someone over with a one-inch punch, or kill them with the five point exploding heart technique, or whatever. It is safely assumed hypothetical, or conditional, or BS, or whatever you like to say. Again, it was private conversational badinage, there was no attempt or need for clarity.

If Trump was describing say the exploits of Warren Beatty no one would doubt it. No one would doubt that when you're Warren Beatty, or Robert Plant or Genghis Khan, you can grab a woman by the pussy and she'll go along.

Meanwhile, back to the disproportionality. Trump is pretty clearly talking about people at his level with a reasonable degree of empowerment and status. Even if they didn't like it, no harm done, that is to say, no other harm done.

Clinton picked out shopgirls and office workers and had men with guns bring them to his hotel. And he didn't take no for an answer. If it was all Eleanor Mondale and Nina Burleigh, or if Clinton had run that game on *you*, at least it would not be such a case of punching down as it were - and I have to despise those who are not seeing or not appreciating the difference.

Roughcoat म्हणाले...

Wait ... in the course of my life as a normal guy I would say that men when they're hanging out with each other -- in, say, a locker room -- don't talk a lot about women and sex. They don't talk dirty about women, generally. Men who do that are seen as being kind of creepy. Men who talk obsessively about sex and use obscene slang terms for women's private parts in the course of conversation are the exception to the rule of men-talking-with-men because they are just plain creepy and weird. In any large group of men you may find that one guy who talks like this, and what happens is the other guys quietly listen to him and smile wanly and maybe laugh mildly at his jokes, but really they're mostly all wishing he would shut up. Sex talk by men to men makes heterosexual men uncomfortable for the same reason that full-on camera shots of the guy in a porn movie makes them uncomfortable.

Or maybe I'm just erroneously projecting my Midwestern white-guy middle class upbringing, morality, and experience on men everywhere. But if you are a Midwestern white middle class guy of a certain age then I think you will agree with my comments above.

Errol Flynn seduced thousands of women.

One of his methods involved his ownership of a yacht. During the week, he would individually invite a dozen or so young women to spend the weekend on his yacht.

Each of the women was assigned to a individual cabin. By the end of the weekend, he would visit each woman alone in her cabin. In many such cases, he came in the middle of the night, simply crawled into the bed and had sex with her.

Then during the next week he would invite another dozen or so new women to spend the weekend on his yacht.

Make it all about how Bill Clinton got away with rape. How Hillary Clinton got away with gross, blatant corruption of her office and the uncountably many crimes that were committed in support of that corruption. How he's seen first-hand, from the private-sector side, how the pay-to-play corruption of government at every level hurts us all. Ask how many Americans think it's in our national interest to sell a sixth of our Uranium production to a Russian oligarch with ties to Iran.

A Bill Clinton could do it. A Ronald Reagan could do it with a shake of his head and two or three words. We'll see what a Donald Trump can do. But I do think he's far better suited to this kind of fight than most of his primary opponents would have been.
