Eric the Fruit Bat म्हणाले...: So I got a subscription to Smithsonian magazine. I knew little about it except it had behind it the prestige of the Smithsonian Institute. I expected it to be a survey course sort of thing for an educated general readership; laypeople who want to learn something about what sort of advances are going on in the world.

What sold me was the cover I saw on display at the library. Dark and dangerous-looking with an ancient helmet and the word "GLADIATOR" boldly in white.

How totally cool is that?

Anyway, turns out that the article about some archaeological site where used to stand a gladiator training facility is mostly about the career of the guy in charge of the operation. That's filler, so far as I'm concerned.

It's fucking People magazine, for crying out loud. Must be aimed at women.

Science magazines went to that model decades ago. They think it makes the articles more interesting. See, it's all about the "process of discovery."
