But when you go down to 25th and center, you see guys with guns hanging out this long, that’s ridiculous, and they’re allowing them to do this and the police know half of them don’t have a license to carry a gun. We’ve gotta talk to them, put some sense into them. They targeting us, but we know about it so there’s no reason to keep saying it’s their fault. You play a part in it. If you know there’s a reason, don’t give in to the hand, don’t be going around with big guns, don’t be going around shooting each other and letting them shoot y’all cause that’s just what they’re doing and they’re out to destroy us and we’re falling for it."

Said Patrick Smith, Sylville Smith's father.

Sylville Smith is the 23-year-old man shot dead last night in Milwaukee, touching off rioting. The police officer who shot him, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports, was also a black man, according to Police Chief Edward Flynn, who has seen the body camera video.
"I mean, there was virtually no time between the officer unhooking his seat belt, turning on his body camera, getting out of the car and immediately he was in a foot chase. That foot chase went maybe a few dozen feet before he encountered this individual in a fenced yard," Flynn said. "The individual was armed. The individual did turn toward the officer with the firearm in his hand. You can't tell when the officer discharges his firearm."...

Flynn said... that based on the video, the officer faced a credible threat. He said Smith did not comply with an officer's command to drop his gun. There is no indication that Smith fired a shot. "It (the gun) was in his (Smith's) hand. He was raising up with it."

There are laws about this sort of thing, I believe. If police know people are carrying guns unlicensed and are not doing anything about it, that's a problem. Are they giving in and choosing not to enforce the laws?

If the police officer were White, Obama already would have sent a Justice Department investigative team to Milwaukee to try to prepare a federal indictment.

Bruce Hayden म्हणाले...

I said this in the last thread, but it bears repeating. The officer's body cam apparently shows the gun in the decedent's hand. That would fully justify the officer shooting him in self defense. Period. The Vivian doesn't need to point the gun at the officer. He doesn't need to shoot at the officer first. That is because there is no justification for someone in his position having a gun in his hand when interacting with a cop. The cop was fully justified in believing that the purpose for the civilian having a gun in his hand in this sort of situation is to threaten, if not shoot the cop. Cops are routinely exonerated for shooting someone after hearing another cop yell "gun".

Is it a double standard? Probably. The rest of us have to be more sure of a threat before shooting. The reason for the difference is that the rest of us can, and probably should, retreat in many cases, even if armed, when the other party shows a gun. The police really don't have that luxury. If they retreat, in order to avoid a confrontation, the other party may harm a civilian.

And note that a concealed carry permit does not authorize you to pull a gun in the presence of a cop. Most anyone who has taken a concealed carry class knows this, and that you have to act responsibly with firearms. Don't know about WI, but most states have some sort of education or training requirement for issuing CCWs. If this guy actually had a permit, he should have known that you don't pull a gun around a cop. Instead, at a traffic stop, you should have your hands on the wheel when the officer comes up, and in states that have a duty to inform (or if the cop seems nervous), you tell the officer that you are armed, etc. of course, WI seems to be weird here, with no allowance for being actively armed in your vehicle, permit or not. Which means, for the guy to have a gun in his hand when shot, he must have been illegally transporting his firearm, which is the community session of a crime in the presence of a police officer, which in many states justifies the use of deadly force to effect an arrest IF the crime is considered violent (which illegally carrying a firearm probably is).

Bottom line - don't draw down on a cop if you want to remain alive.

"Instead, at a traffic stop, you should have your hands on the wheel when the officer comes up, and in states that have a duty to inform (or if the cop seems nervous), you tell the officer that you are armed"

We were taught that you should not only inform an officer during a traffic stop if you have a firearm in the vehicle, but even if you don't you should still tell them you have a permit. Why? That seems like needlessly putting yourself in a risky situation, but when the cop runs your driver's license and sees you also have a carry permit, he's going to be very suspicious as to why you didn't let him know that to begin with; and he's going to be wondering whether you've got a firearm in the vehicle. Be up front with them, and don't make a single move without being told to do so.

My father (retired cop) once had a firearm pointing directly at an armed robber at close range coming out of a grocery store. He identified himself and told the guy to drop his weapon, but the guy raised it. Before the robber could get it pointed at him, my father squeezed the trigger: misfire. The robber squeezed his: misfire. True story.

My guess is that BLM is looking to re-create the "Forbidden Zones" of the European suburbs (e.g. Paris) where the police can't or won't go, so that the zones are effectively under the control of local "gangs", of either a criminal or religious character. Except they want black communities to be under their control.

This is the way of black politics now within the Democratic Party -- the blacks get their cuts & their political fiefs & the honkies are told to stay the hell out. White liberals tend to be into "good government" & "transparency". Well, at least they used to be. In theory. But, blacks see government in the good ol' fashion American way, as about streams of patronage.

BLM is just looking at the term "patronage" in a radical, racially separatist, way.

Perhaps we should compare urban black values to, say, the East Asian and Southwest Asian immigrant values.

What does the typical black male of that critical age group save his money for? A car. If he already owns a car, he saves for a sound system, the louder the better — fidelity be damned, followed by oversized tires on custom-made spinner rims. If an Asian kid already has a computer, he saves for a car, followed by another computer.

Who does the typical black male of that critical age group admire? LeBron James followed by Drake followed by Joaquin Guzman Loera followed by Lil Wayne. The Asian kid admires Ma Yun followed by Michio Kaku followed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart followed by Edward Witten.

The typical black male of that critical age group is into intimidation, either to avoid it or inflict it, usually both. The Asian kid is into Auskomponierung.

You can summarize Smith's father statement like this:
"I was a bad role model as a father. Kids like my son have lousy lives. They pick up criminal habits and society makes guns available to them, so tragedies like this happen."
The unspoken reasoning -- what makes it all sensible to Smith's father -- is 'white people are responsible for all this. White people (or society, if you prefer), were responsible for him being a lousy father figure, for his kid's lousy values, as well as making guns desirable and available (stolen or not) to his son.
This is typical blame displacing, but when it's linked to race -- as I believe Smith's father links it to race -- it inevitable forms the basis for ethnic nationalism: 'My fate, and the fate of all Black people, is a result of my Blackness."

"After the shooting, violence erupted on the city’s predominantly black north side, an area with a history of violence and distrust between police and the community. Flynn said four officers were hurt, and a 16-year-old girl was hit by what was thought to be crossfire, suffering non-life-threatening injuries. He said 17 people were arrested, most for civil disobedience but four on burglary charges. Six businesses were burned, and seven squad cars were damaged."

Black Lives Matter is a vehicle for consolidating decades of unfulfilled and disparate goals of the left “Oppression” and “privilege” are the updated terms to described the “Haves” and the “have-nots” Privilege restricts free speech in a subtler but more powerful way than use of force

Despite positioning itself as counter to the “system,” they simply want to take the system over for their own ends Activists who are not black are termed “allies,” refer to themselves as such, and admit to reacting to a culture of fear, driven primarily by the fear of being ostracized from the left’s cultural community, “Allies” reported that their motivation for joining, in addition to avoiding community exclusion, was to promote their own “oppression” by tethering it to that of the black community.

Operatives shared that one of their greatest fears was activists perceiving that the movement was not driven by black leadership but instead “the same old” Civil-Rights-era types with a diversity of backgrounds. They feel it is important to distinguish the movement from the “failed” Civil Rights era movements, which did not achieve the operatives of BLM’s goal: “radical social upheaval.”

The Report itself lists 10 key insights:

2. The police, as representatives of the state, must be messaged as exemplifying the Black Lives Matter framing by being themselves oppressive and racist.
3. Black Lives Matter frames their cause as one against a systemic problem and necessarily utterly rejects the one bad apple counterargument BLM relies upon the elevation and equating of other underprivileged groups to a status just as oppressed as Black America in order to build a narrative of an America divided into the Oppressed and the Privileged. For this reason causes such as undocumented workers, LGBTQ, and womens reproductive rights, are recruited and welcomed into the Allies category of supporters (see below).
4. Supporters of BLM, for the most part, have moved on from desiring to silence dissent through amending free-speech laws; instead, Black Lives Matter (1) pressures authorities to do it for them, (2) creates an atmosphere of intimidation through threats of violence and shows of force, and (3) incorporates a culture of self-censorship in which those with privilege have a lesser voice than the oppressed.
5. While social-media and cameras are utilized uniquely and effectively to communicate with and recruit new supporters, it is the framework of organizing learned from past attempts and overarching magnanarrative that in reality gives Black Lives Matter its edge.
6. There are three distinct segments of supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, each with their own emotional pathways to a deeply felt connection: Activists, Allies, and Operatives.
7. These mental maps explain current reasons for support as well as provide strategic pathways for weakening that same support.
8. Common across all segments is the emotion of fear of being ostracized from the lefts cultural community.
9. The specificity of the cause injustice toward the Black community is both central to its appeal and also a window into an Achilles-heel weakness of the movements core positioning.
10. The movement is at a critical juncture in its lifecycle, with maximum cultural influence but having failed to transition this influence into policy impact.
In the Report, Anne addresses the motivations of “allies” and confirms that many non-blacks participate as a way of virtue signalling:

Real nationalism -- as opposed to patriotism -- is poison.
In nationalism, your nation is your destiny. No other feature of your identity, not religion, not education, not social class, not sex, is as important as the nation you belong to, and your nation is in eternal war with other nations. Your nation can only gain by making another nation lose.
We may tend to sympathize with self-identified nationalists, if they are a minority and they play the oppression card, but the nationalist philosophy is just as poisonous. There is no progress. There is no getting along, no reconciliation. If your nation isn't tangibly losing to me, giving up something your nation is loathe to give up, your nation is winning over mine, and losing the war means extinction of that part of myself which is greater than myself.

Smith's point about role models in poor ghetto neighborhoods is well taken. The values are so skewed that in fact, success stories are the dopers, the pimps, sometimes the thieves, while a working man with 2 jobs trying to keep his family safe is a sucker. The kids are told - and shown - over and over from a very young age that they are entitled to whatever they can take, that white society is holding them down and the only reason they are different, can't work and succeed. The government is both surrogate parent and oppressor.

Christmas Day in the ghetto: every child with a new bicycle or new rolle skates, a new Game Boy (or whatever) is immediately victimized by the older children, like one of those cartoons of a line of fish, each progressively larger, eating each other. And no one cares, except maybe the cops. My memory of working Christmas is of crying 5 year olds, their toys stolen, and every other child in the chain walking around with something new, simultaneously victim and offender.

Fix it? Sh*t, you'd almost have to nuke it first. It's Chinatown.

Like, already I feel like they should have never OK'd guns in Wisconsin.

Blacks have said they want equality. Then you cannot sit there and whine "Well, why didn't you white folks STOP us?" It's not our job. It's not our job to tell you to stop committing crimes because it will usually lead to your kid's committing crimes. That was your call.

But, honestly, you've voted for the nonsense that passes as leadership in Milwaukee for generations. And, after this, you will continue voting for the same people advocating the same idiotic policies and generating the same results because they really don't give a shit about you and don't HAVE to do anything because there is zero chance you won't vote for them anyway.

2. The police, as representatives of the state, must be messaged as exemplifying the Black Lives Matter framing by being themselves oppressive and racist.

What I'll never get is that BLM hates the police, who represent the state --- but demand the state get larger to deal with the issue. As that Reason picture shows of riot cops making a girl: She wanted bigger government. She got bigger government.

The federal government thinks that it is its job to fix it, through GOP administrations and Democrat administrations. And guess who pays for the federal government?

LOL Not even close to being true. Sure,. there is the odd token black. But they Milwaukee Democratic machine, like Chicago's, is white.

Yes he lost a son and that is tragic.

But ask yourself why THIS man is being interviewed.....

He's a career criminal.

He raised (if you can apply that term to his role) a career criminal.

By all appearances his son died in a justifiable shooting.

That shooting led to riots, injuries, lost businesses and multiple harmed lives.

So it is the fault of white, hey(!) like me.

Feh.

Other than the increasing pile of evidence leading me towards anger rather than sympathy - a trend that is more exhausting to resist by the day - I get nothing from him. I have nothing for him.

I wonder what makes some people think the feds are capable of fixing this? More so than the Boy Scouts or the Rotary?
I know that liberals believe that federal actions successfully integrated the US armed forces by simply ordering them to be successfully integrated, but citizens aren't soldiers. Citizens talk back. Citizens are expected to be the government in a republic.

Mike Sylwester said...Since the police officer is Black, however, we are in uncharted waters. It will be interesting to see what Obama will do now.

He will do nothing. Hillary leads by wide margins in Wisconsin (the women there hate them some Trump). He's not going to wreck that.

The White majority neighborhoods are as/more "gun rich" than "The Hood". Yet, the vast majority of illegal misuses of guns are inflicted by Blacks and chiefly in Black majority neighborhoods.

Of course, facts do not matter to those who attack The Bill Of Rights--Especially Articles I, II, IV and X being members of today's Fascist Party.

Lewis Wetzel म्हणाले...

One of the reasons gun control is a more popular issue with Blacks than with whites is that Pew survey info showed that black gun ownership/ gun in home number is about 1/5 that of whites.
I think that this means that gun owning Blacks (as a group) are incredibly more likely to use a gun for criminal purposes than whites, but as a percentage of the population, Blacks are much less likely to own a gun.
Does that sound right?

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel used the word "uprising" three times on the front page today to describe Saturday night's looting and burning, including in the main headline. That's an interesting word choice. It connotes justified opposition to systemic de jure oppression, like the slave revolts in the 1800's or fighting apartheid in South Africa. It dignifies the conduct as something more than an opportunity to destroy property and loot liquor and wig(!) stores.

Exactly. It's like the distinction between 'rebels' and 'insurgents' when reporting ME affairs.

I guess it's an aside..
But..
I was on I-94 near Milwaukee last night around midnight and saw a young-ish woman walking..on the interstate..on the traffic side of cement construction barriers.
She was putting herself (and potentially drivers) in pretty clear danger so I called a Milwaukee police dept. by cell to alert them.
They answered with a pretty harried tone in their voice, said things were busy and that they would forward me to another station that should be able to handle my call.
The line went quiet for a bit..then some electronic noises briefly came on followed by a canned voice saying "all circuits are busy".

I hope nothing happened to her.

How long has it been since there was a Republican mayor in Milwaukee? Why are Democrat-run cities such quagmires of hatred and violence?

Milwaukee needs..a trolley.

Or a monorail.

walter म्हणाले...

Gerry, you may know this already..but the mayor of Milwaukee, "Barette" as I refer to him, has spent a lot of time pursuing an expensive trolley project.
I think a more symbolic effort would be a merry-go-round...with caricatures of various Dem pols and city school figures in place of horses.

Over 20 years before bubble gum.

Always helpful to provide some context to "It's been a long fucking time"
