When I saw the headline - which loaded before the picture - I was expecting to see, not fish swimming, but a plate of fish on a café table. What does that say about me? (Or possibly about Althouse blog.)
Yesterday, my grandson won the Pa State Stone Skipping championship for the second year in a row (youth division). Third time in four years.
Kurt "Mountain Man" Steiner was in attendance and participated in the adult division. He holds the Guiness world record for 88 skips (The cast was achieved on September 6, 2013 at Red Bridge in the Allegheny National Forest, Pennsylvania.)
Looking for scholarship opportunities for my grandson.
Sick in bed, I've been watching youtube. Saw an interview with Trump and the kids a few years ago. He does not brook any dissent at all, and they know it and say it.
Donald Jr in response to a question from Howard Stern (Did your dad give you Florida for your birthday), said, yeah, but only the southern half because the northern half, you know...
Re Obama's vacationing and the Louisiana floods, he could at least have sent out a statement which the White House does for just about any other occasion. The argument about distracting the rescue efforts with his motorcade, etc. has merit, but George W. was not given the benefit of that argument.
(Besides, is all that hoopla really necessary? It seems to get worse with every new president. Perhaps it is time to cut back some on the imperial style?)
I see Jazz Shaw on Hot Air opines that the person who allowed the picture of W. looking out the window on Air Force One should have been fired. I disagree. It was a perfectly reasonable picture of W. looking compassionate with the disaster victims that was viciously misrepresented by the media. And Obama need not worry about that, does he?
I saw the movies Indignation and Imperium each of the last two afternoons. Both have Tracy Letts playing a pivotal supporting role and doing an excellent job. I had seen him before but did not know his name before this unorthodox double feature.
Each movie contained a quote about democracy:
Indignation - "Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner." This was spoken by an emotionally unbalanced coed in the context of a 1950's political discussion.
Imperium - "Three people form a government and two of them immediately vote to steal the third one's wealth." Spoken by Daniel Ratcliffe's FBI infiltrator character as he tries to gain trust with a white supremacist.
Equally good movies (within range). It probably means something. I don't know. I'm in Houston, TX and both of these movies were showing in only one theatre in the area, 20 miles apart. I'm here for cancer treatment, my second completely different and unrelated cancer in two years. (Prostate and, Head and Neck). The funny thing is that I am healthy as a bear, otherwise. They checked my pulse the first day and were concerned that my pulse was only 50 but I explained to them that it gets down in the low forties when I am really in shape. I run ultras and will run tomorrow and until it gets bad, if it gets bad. My expectation is that even with chemo and radiation, it can't feel worse than the last 10 miles of a 50 miler and I've done a couple of those recently. I don't know about that either though. They cut my prostate out - no chemo, no radiation - and that wasn't that big of a deal but the chemo and radiation might be a whole nother thing. Week two starts tomorrow.
Hell Or High Water, I saw on Wednesday, and it is an instant classic. I predict it stands the test of time. It is the best movie I have seen in several years and I see everything with merit. It keeps on resonating with me. That's very rare.

@Althouse, a few days ago you posted something about Sylville Smith's grandfather writing that “He [Smith] was afraid for his life. He was concerned about his safety and surviving.”
That stuck with me because this morning I woke up and thought, well, I get that a young Black man in the inner city might indeed want the ability to protect himself, but from whom. From other young men just like himself, with a criminal rap sheet and an illegally-acquired (stolen or purchased from the thief) handgun. If the gun control nuts will remove their tinfoil helmets, perhaps they can get started on getting illegal guns out of the inner city. After that they can come and talk to the rest of us.

Cool! How are the rocks, er, stones, selected?
Kurt "Mountain Man" Steiner was in attendance and participated in the adult division.
@Ferdandinande. The contestants bring their own ammo ... er ... rocks. The rocks are (appx) 2" x 4" oval shaped, less than 1/2" thick. That appears to be the preferred size.
Prior to the competition, which is held at the same place every year, some contestants were in the river fishing for previously cast stones.
Stone skipping, like being able to whistle Mozart arias, seems to be a somewhat enviable but non lucrative skill. I saw the Steiner video. That's really impressive, but I don't see how he can capitalize on it.

Oh you are absolutely correct Wiiliam. There's nothing financially to be gained. Pretty low key competition. It's a great way to spend a Saturday. Reminded me of Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney.
Funny story (to me at least). I left the event before the adult competition had completed. As I was walking towards my a car, a policeman had parked his car and was walking to the event. I looked at him and said: "Don't worry, it's a well behaved event". He smiled. Then I said: "However, everyone has rocks in their hands". He laughed.
I used to do some business with a South Korean businessman who collected koi. He had a huge, landscaped pond for them and had even built an elaborate glass paneled house over a separate, connected pond where he could keep them during the brutal Korean winters. As I recall, he had around 1000 of them and went to Japan twice a year to purchase champion additions. I'm told he paid as much as $10K for a koi and had none that cost less than $1K. Pretty serious collector and a very interesting man - had escaped from North Korea when he was 16 and then built an impressive manufacturing operation. Personally, I couldn't see the difference between the prized ones and the more pedestrian ones; they were all pretty. But, so are the ones in your picture.
Not to belabor the trivial, but is it not easy enough in Blogger to make sure that the ads within the posts thread are separated from the post titles and body by at least a line space or two? Perhaps not. I do find that bit of ugliness distracting.

Althouse playing koi again...
3rd!

AdBlocker really works! Your site has never looked so professional.
Thanks for the kick in the butt, Meade!
Sixth!

I keep waiting for those fish to spell out something.

From the raised eyebrow department: Actual CNN Headline reads, “Trump wants GOP to court black voters — then slams voting rights for felons.”
Obama has yet to "surface" in Louisiana (a little Ted Kennedy lingo there).
Could the reason be the governor of LA is an R?
What a lovely picture.

It says I'm good because I meant to do that.
@Humperdink
Lovely! Congratulations.
Watched "Lo and Behold" on Friday. Not one of Herzog's best efforts.
Love the photo.
Yes.
I said love.

John Bel Edwards, the current governor, is a Democrat. Here's a video of him being interviewed by CNN about Trump's visit to the area.

My error ... for some unknown reason I thought Jindal was still the governor.
Anne Applebaum thinks "Donald Trump is a Russian oligarch," which is an interesting take, but how does this differ from Hillary!?
Back in the day our favorite Chinese restaurant featured a koi pond. Then one day we came in and the pond had no more fish. Sad.
Here's more evidence on how dire things are for Obamacare.. Funny how it's not being talked about, as it's going to be a major issue for the new administration.
I used to have a koi pond but the bears partook as if at a buffet.
... you can talk about whatever you want.

He's a hippie in a peace-sign t-shirt
What kind of filter did you have on the lens for that shot?

I tried koi. The raccoons loved 'em.
