Sometimes Barack Obama sounds like he's doing his own Bad Lip Reading.

ADDED: Here's a real Bad Lip Reading. It's Ted Cruz at the RNC:

Probably should have mentioned it was a genuinely great speech by Obama, with a high degree of difficulty. One of his best, as judged by the fact that I sat all the way through it.

Lawrence O'Donnell mentioned the (4) greatest convention speeches in his lifetime were given at the last 4 Dem conventions by Obama.

Hillary has a very high bar to achieve.

While Obama was giving his speech good ol' Bernie was leaving the Democrat Party. I suppose he would say that he didn't leave the Party as much as it left him.

He brought a number of young, idealistic voters into the political process, but now that those young, idealistic voters have been told by the ridiculous Sarah Silverman that they're the ridiculous ones, I wonder how many will stay and how many will follow him out.

@David, I'd like to think that Trump, being a businessman, is already aware that Emails are vulnerable and takes care not to put anything into an Email he wouldn't want to see on the front page of the New York Times. And if Julian Assange gets hold of RNC Emails, I think what we'd mostly see on Wikileaks are increasingly panicked messages opposing the rise of Donald Trump -- which would scarcely hurt him with his base.

Bernie was an independent before he decided to run for the Democrat nomination and is now returning to his natural state. To have expected the Dems to treat Bernie, the independent, equally to one of the mainstays of the Democrat party always struck me as a little naive. Obviously they preferred the Democrat candidate, they're Democrats.

There was a time when I could count on an Obama speech to momentarily lift me from my despair, before sinking back to the edge of the Abyss. Now even that brief respite is gone: his words seem empty now, like sad deflated balloons after a birthday party where no one could be bothered to show up. An empty birthday party where the birthday child had cancer. And will probably never see another birthday. Because: cancer. THOSE deflated balloons...

There was a time when I thought I could feel Hope and Change: the feeling was barely perceptible and fleeting, like a spider on the skin, but maybe it was a friendly spider. Now I realize it is all meaningless. There are no Friendly Spiders. There are no Friendly Spiders. There are no Friendly Spiders. Oh, my skin, how they crawl...!

I was a fool to believe Obama's words could save me from myself. Not even the mellifluous tones of Morgan Freeman could save me, now...

ARM, shiloh, and O'Donnell are correct, I think. Obama is the greatest political speaker of the last twelve years.

I wonder how Hillary's voice lessons are going. Also those "don't open your mouth that wide and look like a baboon" lessons.

Eric the Fruit Bat म्हणाले...

Political speeches to me seem pointless in the modern era but lots of people don't see it that way, apparently.

But then again, I'd probably take a similarly dismissive position if it were Ancient Greece and someone asked me what I thought about last night's recitation of The Iliad.

In one of the Star Trek spinoffs there was a character, a shape-shifter alienated from his race (trope, trope, baby!) who got to return to his people and they all melted together into one giant, lukewarm ocean of gooey milk chocolate or something like that. Point taken.

I guess there are people who go to these political conventions, look around at everybody else, and say to themselves, "These people are all so attractive that I can't wait until the show starts and we can all join together into one giant puppy pile of identical emotion." I'm not one of them.

Never cared for church or rock concerts, either.

Lame! What was even memorable about any of them? I recall the "we're not red states or blue states..." from 2004, but it was trite (and in contrast to VP candidate John Edwards' "two Americas" crap) but that's it.

Zell Miller's from 2004 was solid, and most representative of that election.

Schwartzenegger's from 2004 was uplifting and humorous.

Reagan's brief speech in 1976 was perfect--and probably made most people wonder why he was not the nominee instead of Ford.

Nixon's in 1968 was underrated. He addressed the darkness the country was going through, but was hopeful and optimistic throughout. He was careful to call for order with justice, and did a lot to establish himself as the "time to calm down" candidate for that year--which the country wanted.

My patients, they look to me to tell them that it will be okay when Obama is gone. They say that, just maybe, Hillary might be wonderful, too, but you can tell by their imploring eyes they don't believe it...

As a Therapist, I can confidently say that Hillary suffers from chronic depression, masked by moments of delusional grandeur and excessive alcohol. How can I inspire my patients when I know that Hillary will never live through a full term? How can I help them when there is no Help to be had, anywhere? The alcoholism they suffer, just to make it through another day? Hillary has that, too...

At least when Hillary blacks out drunk and hits her head on the floor there are Secret Service Agents and Doctors right there to help her. The best my patients can expect is to fall down drunk, split their head open on the corner of a table, and slowly, inexorably bleed out, to perhaps be discovered days later by the landlord due to complaints about the smell. And their cat will be taken to a shelter, abandoned and euthanized. That is where we are going, people...

Helped get him easily elected president twice. Indeed, a Communist, Marxist, Islamo-Fascist, Socialist, wealth distributing, community organizing African-American Muslim born in Kenya named Barack Hussein Obama, who wakes up every morning hating America and Americans was elected president twice!

And Reps still haven't recovered ...

My favorite, from big government Democrat Obama: "we [Americans] don't look to be ruled."

Yeah, that's what the Dems are against, people being ruled by government. I mean, sure, that's the opposite of what the Dems have been saying and doing for 40 years (expanding government, arguing that the stupid American people should be ruled by the smart progressive elites like them), but suddenly the Dems are super opposed to authoritarianism. The people who promote "no platforming," who see attacking opponents' jobs/personal lives as a legitimate tactic, who encourage their followers to break whatever rules they need to in order to get the results they want...those people are now saying how much they oppose scary authoritarian-sounding Trump. The same President who happily inserted the Federal government into people's lives at every turn--including passing his signature law which effectively makes it illegal NOT to participate in a federal gov. program whether you want to or not (but also including things like pressuring universities to conform to Dem party desires, local schools to change their bathroom access policies, etc etc)--that President is now arguing that he and his party believe Americans shouldn't be "ruled."

It'd be funny if it weren't so sad.

Greatest speech ever by Obama, very emotional. I wish he had done a few more like that while he was president. Why didn't he?

I don't remember anything from what he said except for the line that Hillary's more qualified to be president than either himself or Bill. An odd line. Bill had been a governor while Barack had been a part time lecturer, a state senator, and a first term US senator who started running for president in his second year. Bill laughed and seemed genuinely amused so I guessed he didn't mind being included in Obama's self deprecation. The boys are pulling for her. Actually they have a lot $$ to gain if she wins, and everybody knows it, or should know it.

I thought Obama tripped up on that line about the owl, too. Wondered what it actually was supposed to be. Looked at a transcript of the speech at time.com, it read, "a big-eyed, green owl," he added the blue wings. He's always been better when he sticks to the prepared speech.

Two of the most overrated hallmarks of the modern political era: Obama's speechifying and Bill Clinton's savvy, folksy, country boy charm. While one is said to have a golden tongue and the other to be the most talented politician of his generation, both just bore me to distraction. Of course that's just me.

Because the Republicans have never previously ceded so much of the patriotic middle ground before. The Dem crowd have chanted 'USA USA' on several nights now. When was the last time you saw that happen? Obama was able to walk in and talk to the crowd in the way he did because they were ready to hear that message.
