"A toilet-themed cafe where customers dine on meatballs floating in soup-filled latrines...."

"Guests at the 'Jamban Cafe' sit on upright toilets around a table where food is served in squat loos.... 'Jamban' means toilet in Indonesian...."
Owner Budi Laksono, a public health expert who used to work for the local government, hosts discussions with customers and shows them videos as he seeks to encourage people to use dedicated facilities for their bodily functions...

"This cafe serves as a reminder that many people in Indonesia still do not have toilets," said Laksono, 52.... "Many critics say the cafe is inappropriate and against Islamic law," he said.

"as he seeks to encourage people to use dedicated facilities for their bodily functions..." Will the cultural imperialism of diversity-suppressing colonizers ever end?

This will not end well.

Please, oh please, tell me the bar service uses urinals.

Yes, I believe I read the specific verse in the Koran forbidding toilet themed cafes.

... it aims to educate people about sanitation and encourage the increased use of toilets.

"I think the idea is pretty interesting because if you try to have a campaign without a gimmick like this, the information won't stick."

It won't stick? How about a cheaper approach - a Twitter hashtag - #ShitHitsFan!

Oh good for you dhimmi, I'm sure they'll kill you last. (unless you're gay)

Considering the hygiene standards in Indonesia the toilet theme is probably a useful thing if they are functional.

Eating soup from a squat loo is the easy part.

Crapping in a tea cup bolted to the wall of the Men's room on the other hand....

@Althouse, you post something like this again and it will be up to you or Meade to come and clean the vomit off my keyboard.

Keep an open mind on this. If you're trying to lose weight, such a place would be a godsend. It's hard not to overeat in a BBQ joint, but I could easily kep my appetite in check in a cafe like this.

I'm going to be frank: this marks the second time in my life where I have to acknowledge that Islamic Law has a silver lining.

"This cafe serves as a reminder that many people in Indonesia still do not have toilets,"

A good way to fix that is to increase demand for toilets by using them for nonstandard purposes.

Here it is:
القرآن يحظر المقاهي تحت عنوان المرحاض.

That translates back to "the Koran prohibits cafes under the toilet", which is close enough.

I wanna know what part of Islamic law they claim it violates, but why bother reporting that?

(I honestly expect a bit better from AFP, but probably shouldn't.)

It seems to be an Asian fixation. Shit like this has been around for years.

There's nothing new under the sun, or under the bum. When I was in college in the early '60's, a bunch of us threw a party in which the punch was served in a toilet bowl -- vodka punch with Baby Ruth bars floating in it. I think this was about supporting the War on Poverty, or maybe Banning the Bomb. Some good cause.
