"A court in Qatar has convicted a Dutch woman of having sex outside marriage after she told police she was raped."

"The 22-year-old was handed a suspended sentence and fined $824 (£580). She will also be deported. Her lawyer said her drink had been spiked at a Doha hotel in March and she had woken up in a stranger's flat, where she realised she had been raped. Her alleged attacker, who said the sex was consensual, was sentenced to 100 lashes for having sex outside marriage. He will be given a further 40 lashes for consuming alcohol."

BBC reports.

The story speaks for itself. Ban all Muslims from immigrating to the USA.

We can't arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens, because we are afraid it will make illegal aliens distrust the police.....

YoungHegelian म्हणाले...

It's not like the guy is getting away scott-free. One hundred & forty lashes is not a trivial punishment.

Those Muzzie countries don't go in for figurin' out those complicated "He said/She said" situations. Fornication & alcohol --- away with the lot of them!

My question is what did this Dutch woman think was going to happen when she reported this to the authorities? That it would be handled like it would be in Amsterdam? Ya know, when you go around mouthing the praises of "diversity & cultural pluralism", sometimes that means that folks are going to do things that are going to offend your secular European sense of values, because, secular European hold sway in, well, secular Europe.

Clyde म्हणाले...

Deported. She's lucky the barbarians are letting her off so easy.

Clyde म्हणाले...

And YoungHegelian, at the rate things are going, those secular European values won't hold sway in secular Europe for much longer, if they keep importing Muslims.

Maybe we should bring back flogging in lieu of prison time. Give the convicted a choice. A canning or going to the can.

140 lashes would be a death sentence unless they are different now

This would be the moderate Muslims, right? You can tell, because they didn't hand her over to his family to be ritually tortured to death.

Tell me again what a rape culture looks like? I keep hearing ours called that...but if so then what's Qatar's?

Hey, does anyone wonder if the Clinton Global Initiative/Clinton Foundation got any money from Qatar? Silly question, Hoodlum--of COURSE they did. WashPo: As FIFA Allegations Swirled Clintons Gave Qatar a State - and Legitimacy"
According to the foundation’s Web site, which lists donors based on the amounts of their total contributions organized by ranges, the Qatari committee gave between $250,000 and $500,000. The Persian Gulf nation, known for seeking to build alliances in Washington by giving money to think tanks and other influential organizations, has given the Clinton Foundation between $1 million and $5 million over the years, according to the charity’s Web site.

But hey, if Trump got a few bucks from a white supremacist organization, well, that's out of line everyone.

Yes. Qatar is one of the most liberal Muslim countries and maybe the most or second most liberal Arab countries.

Let me try to guess on the legal reasoning.

It was a "he said/she said" situation. Islamic law pretty much ignores the testimony of the woman involved without witnesses, which were not produced. The judge therefore accepts the admission of the man as the truth, which is consensual sex. The woman, not being a local and not wishing to aggravate the Europeans more after the whole Blatter fiasco, gets a relatively light punishment and is sent home. The man gets the standard punishment.

Do I win?

Achilles, Saudi Arabia limits the number of lashes to 50 in one week and that is only if the doctors think the victim is healthy enough for it. My suspicion is Qatar is similar. If they want you dead, they will break out the stones or the sword.

MaxedOutMama म्हणाले...

Well in traditional Islamic jurisprudence, it is impossible for a woman to effectively charge rape unless four guys not involved witnessed it and they are willing to testify for her.

So alleging rape in effect convicts the woman, by her own testimony, of zina (illicit intercourse). Because, the reasoning is, if intercourse occurred and it was not rape, then the woman must have committed the crime of zina along with the man.

This is the real "rape culture". Rape is common because the woman cannot own up to the crime unless she is willing to be punished, and often very, very harshly. Alternatively, the woman may be punished for slander.
These are both very serious crimes - zina may be punished by death; it's usually 80 lashes I think for qadhf. And no, I am not making this up.

I wonder which event will be the most fucked up: The Olympics or the World Cup. Maybe there will be less rioting in Qatar because it is alcohol free and too hot for street brawls.......Why would anyone want to vacation in a Muslim country?

Achilles म्हणाले...

@static ping

That makes sense as much as anything can. 5 or 50 or 140 seems unimportant. The lash and the lasher make all the difference.

In Afghanistan one of the strangest things we found were the taliban discipline sticks. They would beat each other and naughty villagers.

The culture is sick and disgusting. Justice in game of thrones looks modern compared to some of the things we saw.

Must be true, I've heard it from very important people for many, many years....

Bob Loblaw म्हणाले...

I can't get outraged over this one. The man was punished pretty severely, and while she was technically convicted of the same crime, she got a fine that's some fraction of a plane ticket.

Who drinks alcohol with a stranger of the opposite sex in a Muslim country? That's shockingly stupid.

damikesc म्हणाले...

But a Trump Presidency would make FIFA unwilling to bring it here.

Just to keep things in perspective.

Elect Trump --- no Would Cup.
Deport and fine a woman for being raped --- get a World Cup.

How many companies or entertainers, critical of, say, North Carolina for their bill limiting access to bathrooms and locker rooms by self-identification of gender will still do business with or perform in such countries as this?

Why would this generally be ignored, including the greater implications including any connections to CGI, by the media?

As a legal principle, getting raped = adultery is pretty slick, since complaining of one is an admission of the other...a guaranteed conviction.

This would be a perfect example of Heller's Catch-22.

It would stink to be fined for being raped. OTOH, given the choice between not being fined and the man getting off with no punishment and a few hundred Dollars so that he will be flogged to (or past) and inch of his life. Money well spent!
