"The Citadel announced on Tuesday that it had denied an incoming student permission to wear a hijab with her uniform..."

"... ending a nearly monthlong period of considering what would have been the first change to the 174-year-old institution’s uniforms."
“As the Military College of South Carolina, the Citadel has relied upon a highly effective educational model requiring all cadets to adopt a common uniform,” General Rosa said. “Uniformity is the cornerstone of this four-year leader development model.”

100% correct. Conform to the rules of the establishment or choose not to become part of it.

That's a Tom Swifty.

The Citadel will soon learn that they are the "losers" in the culture wars and will be made to concede and repent.

I do not understand why these losers keep fighting. Perhaps the DOJ will ask the Deptartment of Education to withhold federal money.

Tushnet-approved punishment.

But if she'd been admitted, could she use whichever bathroom/locker room/shower she identified with?

Or, more to the point, could the male cadets have used whatever bathroom/locker room/shower she chose to use?

But they will replace bugle revelry with uvulation.

Ummmm. That would be "ululation."

Or maybe "uvulation" is the sound emitted when ovulating.

The Army just went through this shit over Sikhs and turbans and beards. The Army had their asses handed to them and rightly so.

They should have accepted the young woman with the hijab.

Hmm, religious freedom for the cadet vs. legitimate restriction on the part of the State-affiliated organization...
But we're not talking about Christian religious freedom, so it's something we actually might care about...the rule is oppressive to, and opposed by, some Muslims....

Sue! Sue the Citadel, tear it down brick by brick.

West Point is with you! Power fist!

surely if Sikhs can wear beards in the military then anyone can...otherwise that would be religious discrimination for not being a Sikh...right?

And btw, I think a reasonable accommodation can probably be made on this.

That is a misleading way to frame the story.

Thanks, Ben Thodes!

(I assume it was him, as nobody else attempts to create the proper narrative but him. I assume this from all the shock at him admitting his lies.(

Jason म्हणाले...

Why are we cheering on lawless behavior from the Citadel? They're going to lose this case handily. This is a slam-dunk case of reasonable accommodation/Title VII for a school that receives crazy amounts of federal funds, since nearly every cadet is going to be on ROTC scholarships for at least the last two years.

Sheer idiocy.

South Carolina has its own version of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. I wonder if this policy will survive a state-law challenge.

Why would they accept her in the first place ? I think I remember the Citadel trying to stay all male and losing in court.

Hagar म्हणाले...

Gahrie is right; they have already lost on Sikhs with beard and turban so this is DoA in court.

Gahrie म्हणाले...

well...that too...

But my point was that if the Army is accommodating the religious beliefs of Sikhs by allowing them to wear beards.....than surely the Army also has to allow atheists to wear beards, or else it is discriminating against atheists because they aren't Sikhs...right?

The Citadel is toast.

However, this thing is a political stunt. look at CAIR in the mix:

Lawfare, folks. Burrowing into the footings of one institution after another. Hollowing things out almost imperceptibly.

What matters here is not a hijab. It's who shall be master.

Oh I know Sikhs...I lived with one for a year...including watching him invite his friends over for a party the night Indira Gandhi was assassinated.

Probably the weirdest thing was when he washed his hair, and left it down to dry, he could literally stand on it.

Time for an Orange County doctor joke. "The reason Indira Gandhi died was that all the Indian doctors were in Fountain Valley" (An Orange County city with LOTS of Indian doctors.)

But is it the same? Sikhs do not cut their hair for religious purposes, however, other than covering that hair with a turban I am unaware of any other accommodations they demand. Women who wear hijab do so for modesty. That "modesty" requirement often comes with an entire other set of special accommodations, the extent of which varies based on the persons beliefs. Would this woman be willing to wear the shorts and tee shirts that cadets work out in? Or would she expect to work out in long pants and long sleeved tees in the SC heat? Would she be willing to have physical contact with male students during training if required? Would she demand the pool be closed to males to allow female only swim times for modesty? Would she be willing to change in a locker room with a transgender woman?

All Sikh men are expected to carry a small sword and an iron bracelet at all times.

William म्हणाले...

I'm not the go to person for Koran interpretations, but my understanding is that the Koran enjoins women to dress modestly. All these uncomfortable and unflattering garments are someone's understanding of modest dress. (The veil was a bit of cultural appropriation from the Byzantines.) The clothing seems more a profession of faith as opposed to an article of faith. You can still be a Muslim if you don't wear a hijab.. They're not making her eat bacon. In any event, as Cacimbo points out, how will she square modest dress with shorts or a bathing suit. That seems more a violation of the Koranic injunction than wearing a hijab.

cacimbo म्हणाले...

@ Gahrie Good point. However, carrying those items does not require others to make accommodations.
