But not just any poppy (there are 100 species after all). For Memorial Day, it needs to be the official fake red "Buddy Poppy" sold by VFW with proceeds going to charity.
As a total illiterate when it comes to flowers, I can't say what those things were in that box of dirt that Streisand was singing to. (I was more intrigued by Alan Jay Lerner's rhyming.)
My first home had the most awesome peonies. They were there when I bought the house, and not sure why they thrived, they were in bad back fill soil, and I really didn't do much to help them out. All the kids would come by in the spring and pick them for their moms.

Stunningly beautiful. Thanks.
Why don't ours look like that???
Should have been a poppy.

@MisterBuddwing, why is she singing a song about peonies to roses? Was BS confused?

Is it GMO?
Mom had Festiva and Sarah Bernhardt ringing Dad's vegetable garden. It was fun as a 10-yo to peel back all the petals and reveal the stamens.
At some point, all the peonies were yanked out. Not sure why.
If you walk through the cemetery, you will see Sarah Bernhardt and Festiva on Mom's grave.

What do you call the dude who plants and takes care of these type flowers?
Peony boy, of course.
