The active ingredient, loperamide, offers a cheap high if it is consumed in extraordinary amounts. But in addition to being uncomfortably constipating, it can be toxic, even deadly, to the heart. That reminds me of something I read long ago:
William Burroughs said he would never have been a heroin addict if he had realized how badly constipated it would make him when he got to be an old man.

It's sad that people are so desperate to get "high" that they'll go to these lengths. It's just so childish.
If you can't find a heroin dealer in this day and age you really aren't trying.
People use loperamide aka "lope" to kick heroin. It slightly lessens withdrawal symptoms for many users.
Goes to show how Prog victories in the culture wars have infused everyone's lives with meaning and value.
The new thing south of the border is mixing cocaine and Imodium. You feel great and you don't need to wipe your ass.
It's called a Venezuelan Speedball.
Imodium is the best anti-diarrhea medication on the market. If it gets regulated because some stupid people abuse it, there are going to be politicians dangling from street lights. Bad enough that we have trouble getting Sudafed when we need it.
The NYT has informed everyone that Imodium is a cheap high and its sales will skyrocket. I frankly don't give a shit.
Danno said... I frankly don't give a shit.
I'm sorry these people's problems and life choices are so bound up with substance abuse.
The article reads like BS. 2 deaths?
"One woman" in recovery, sneaking 100 capsules a day, Dr. asks her to stop, her heart rate becomes normal and fainting spells disappear. Maybe that particular Dr. should ask heroin addicts to "stop". He must be pretty persuasive.
Now, who benefits from regulation of Imodium? Has to be money involved somehow.
Maybe preperation for a class action suit down the road.
"....how badly constipated it would make him when he got to be an old man."
Usually self-correcting.
Immodium: Stops the shit..IS the shit. Your choice.
Ipecac, the antithesis of Immodium, has its own unique problems. Perhaps a series of blog posts is in order, on all the things that go into or out of the human body, and how each orifice can be manuipulated with modern pharmaceuticals to control intake or outflow. I, for one, look forward to the post on differences in earwax between the US population and Asians, and how Q-Tips or wax removers are misused in each part of the world.
That immodium is some poweful shit. I find when I take one pill to stem the squirts it blocks me up for the better part of a week. I've taken to cutting the pills in half to reduce the dosage.
I can't imagine what a handful taken at once would do to me. Ouch!
It's the same with hydrocodone and oxycodone. I had an accident and was on both for about 6 months. Side effects are horrendous. I was never able to watch 'House' the same way
