"Then Wolf Blitzer says: '63 is so young!' And then I looked up with a little hope, because I'm about the same age as Robin."

"And then I realized: '63 is so young' is a phrase you never hear relative to anything but death. '63 is so young to be playing in the NFL'? There's nothing!"

Said Garry Shandling, who died yesterday — so young! — at 66.

And, here, Marc Maron just reposted — out from behind the pay wall — the interview he did with Garry Shandling in May 2011.

63/66 is still young, but who wants to live to 80/90/100, especially if one is no longer independent ? My mom is a young 78-year-old, who fights ambitiously for her independence. I, myself, can't quite imagine living that long. I'd be ready to say adieu at about 75. Give me the Smartie.

Anytime earlier is young. I have 5 to go.

A full life span re-starts at age 70. A life spent risk taking has to restart as a life spent taking good care of yourself.

It does seem wrong to die at that age. The most memorable person in my life I met when he was 71...I got 15 more years out of that guy and his family. He was a drinker and smoker too. His house was Party Central.

Some people just got the genes.

For now.

I'm getting sick of how Baby Boomers have tried to rewrite old age. "65 is middle aged!" Oh, so you're planning on living to be 130?

I am nearly forty. I am middle-aged. I can already feel the aging process. My ability to recuperate from illness and injury, my endurance, my abillity to eat whatever I want whenever I want--- these aren't the same as they were at 26. Having a baby at 26, I was back at 'normal' withing 3 days. Same with 28. Last baby (36), it took me 6 weeks. This baby (nearly 39) who knows?

So quit telling me that I'm 'young' and 'just a baby.' I'm young enough and mentally fit enough that I still REMEMEBER young, and this isn't it.

Face it, if you're old enough to collect social security, have grand kids, be on Medicare and have a doctors appt at least once a week? You're probably old.

Since the age of 50, I've felt that I've lived a complete life and that it would not be so sad if it ended. I'm 53 now and still feel that way.

You're not truly old until you have Old People Smell.

That smell of the grandparents' house when you were a kid.

That smell of Aunt Betsy.

That smell of Grandpa.

Sure, 'Old Spice' may have had something to do with that last one.

I am Laslo.

I watched that "Comedians in cars" episode last night. Little did he know, eh? So very sad. I'm 71 and every time I see that someone close to my age has died I always think: "Am I equally clueless ? Could tomorrow be the day only I just don't know it yet?" OTOH, generally speaking, I go thru each day acting and making plans as if I'll live forever. Oh Well. "From one extreme to another." :)

Zeke's healthcare scheme will die of natural causes before it's eighth birthday.

Life expectancy is for when you're just born and includes all sorts of risks you've already survived if you're old. So your like expectancy is much longer once you're old. At 66 you're good for 20 more years average. At 86 you're good for 6 more years average. At 92 you're good for 4 more years average.

My son just returned from the funeral of a high school friend who died driving himself to an emergency room from his daughter's soccer game. He was 46. She was in the car with him when he died.

Use mortality tables to see if it's fair to buy a puppy. If it's 50/50 whether the dog outlives you, it's fair.

Get bigger breeds as you get older. They don't live as long as small ones.

Laslo Spatula म्हणाले...

"63 is so young"

"Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-four"

So evidently sixty-three-and-a-half is a major Turning Point.

I am Laslo.

Or adopt an older one.

I didn't notice.

As I progress beyond age 66, 70 looks younger and younger.

Maybe Garry Shandling's genius was in figuring out how to be both successful and deeply honest.

Early death is a definite career boost for rock stars and poets. With the exception of John Belushi, mortality does not enhance a comedian's material. Comedians should hang in there. George Burns attained his career pinnacle in his nineties. Jack Benny's routine about turning thirty nine was much funnier when he was in his seventies. Old age is a fine joke and offers comedians a wealth of fresh material.

Somebody recently died at 64 - unexpectedly. He had pancreatic cancer. I think maybe the chemotherapy killed him. He had only one treatment, and complained about it.

He had changed his will on a Tuesday and died probably between Wednesday and Thursday and he was found on a Friday when he didn't answer his door or his phone. He did have trouble walking and was overweight. I had told him about 212-CHOICES but don't know what he did.

I watched part of the Comedians in Cars episode and kept thinking he looked like John Kasich (the hair and mannerisms.)
