I usually avoid the "drinking game" approach to the debates.

This is in part because I'm a little puritanical about drinking other than for the intrinsic value of drinking (or, occasionally, a toast). But it's also in part because the rules I see published are too dull. For example, here, in the Sun Times, stuff like take a drink anytime anybody says "America" or "email."

I want more specific things that call attention to an actual and not terribly widely recognized propensity of a candidate to use a particular expression or argument. So, for tomorrow's GOP debate, I'd list things like: Ben Carson says, "That's ridiculous";  John Kasich says, "At the end of the day"; and Scott Walker says: "Gut her like a deer." That way it will be more fun when it happens.

Wine-swilling photos auger otherwise.

Whenever Trump says ill Eagles, we drink a toast to Skip Kelly's team that lost to the lowly Falcons who hired their entire offensive line this week from rejects.

Drink whenever one of them forcefully points with their thumb. You'll know the gesture.

What other than intrinsic value do you think you see in these photographs? Perhaps you are projecting your own puritanism. I was specific about mine. Be specific about yours.

Trump says "corporate inversion."

Fiorina says "started off as a secretary" (never mind that she then got her MBA and climbed up the management ladder based on that credential).

Oh, and you could also do debate bingo instead.

(never mind that she then got her MBA and climbed up the management ladder based on that credential).

I'm sorry, but does that lessen her accomplishment at HP in some way? Did she *not* start as a secretary, go to school to get ahead, then get ahead?

tim in vermont म्हणाले...

She likely quickly figured out that she was as smart as her bosses.

Jane the Actuary म्हणाले...

I'm a fan of Fiorina and I'm good with her using this as an illustration of "any job is a job you can learn from, and you shouldn't see it as beneath you." But it feels like she's implying something other than the path she actually took.

I usually agree with you and find you quite sensible, but you know, I was a computer operator (network operations) and went back to school to learn programming, after getting the lay of the land, so to speak, got a promotion to programmer, and I just can relate to what she did.

Though I wouldn't mind having that same operator job back these days. A lot less money, but a lot more free time. Three weekend graveyard shifts a week, for 36 hrs pay. 4 days off. It's how I went to college and watched my young daughter. Of course I spent most of my programming career automating my old network technician job, then my old supervisor's job, etc.

Definitely, every time you spell America with a K, I need a drink. My bartender thanks you.

Are you saying that taxes would still be where they were when Walker took office if Barrett or that idiot Mary "uh, uh, uh, uh, uh" Burke had won? There is a reason the square headed idiot Doyle didn't run...no more money to steal from transportation funds.

I got a lot more than $5 break btw...then again I don't live in a trailer park.

When you refer to some imagined inherent value of drinking which is consistent with puritanism, it sounds like you mean hydration. Hence the earler poster's comments on wine.

Are you suggesting the Republican Legislature would be passing tax-raising bills just because a Democrat was Governor?

Hydration as an "intrinsic value" of drinking alcohol? How could I have meant that? The intrinsic value is whatever benefit or pleasure you get from the drinking itself, not being forced by the rules of a game to consume whether you like or want it.

You are seriously missing the point of drinking games. You make it sound like an outtake from The Deer Hunter.

That's an idiot response. The legislature didn't turn GOP until the same election that Walker won. Doyle would have had to propose tax hikes. And if the legislature was Democrat, they would have passed it. This is the world that garage wants. The tax decreases may have been modest on an individual level, but it ignores that consistent ass raping of WI taxpayers that has been Democrat history. I try to keep you a level above garage, but I may need to reconsider.

I enjoyed an evening of eating and drinking during the Ford - Carter debate that went silent. We were far enough into the sheets that we able supply our own questions and answers. I played Ford, Adolph was Carter and our buddy Anthony from Jersey was the moderator. Oh, that was fun...
