"Most actors want to get their name in the paper. They like all that attention. I very often am struck with the illusion of success."

"Sometimes it's difficult when you meet people, because you see that they've prejudged you. Not to be treated normally. To have people staring at you, like an animal in the zoo. What it does is remove you from reality."

Said Marlon Brando.

If I met Althouse, I would do this. When I met Mark Steyn, Jonah Goldberg, and Ace, I didn't. I'm a sexist lout.

I think Brando was an interesting person. We share the same birth day. I hope I get a chance to see the documentary.

Restrict your accomplishments to a STEM field, is my advice. Avoid the restaurant autograph seekers and groupies.

It also helps not to be rich.

Ignorance is Bliss म्हणाले...

My strategy is to avoid being rich, talented, or good-looking in any way, shape, or form. The autograph seekers stay away in droves.

I have never understood the appeal of being famous, that is, famous to a degree and in a way that people in the general public will recognize you wherever you go. That seems like pure hell.

Yet if you treat such people like everyone else, you get John Kerry screaming "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM!?!" at the airport when they are asked to go through security.

"I've spent my entire life trying to get people to pay to look at me, and to become world famous. Now, I am upset when people look at me because I'm so famous."

Bay Area Guy म्हणाले...

You mean all that fame, wealth, power, women didn't bring Marlon happiness? Hmmmm.

William म्हणाले...

I definitely see the point of being rich, and there's no downside. I can also see the appeal of being powerful, but that's more of a mixed bag when you weigh the pros and cons. I guess there are some perks to bring famous, but those perks aren't worth the hassle. I don't resent my obscurity and insignificance, but I wish I had more money.

It's probably cool to be a famous poet. You don't get mobbed by autograph seekers, but when you tour college campuses, you can fool around with sensitive, poetry loving college girls. I'd like to be a famous poet.

Alex म्हणाले...

If you're only famous for speaking lines that someone else wrote, you should be eternally grateful for the celebrity.

If you're famous for inventing a new algorithm that makes AI possible, then that's a different deal.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@William, those sensitive college girls will decide three or four years later that they were raped. Not worth it.

Plus these days you're apt to get infected with multiple incurable diseases. Even more not worth it.

JCC म्हणाले...

Bruce Jenner totally gets this.

David म्हणाले...

That's pretty much the deal if you are a movie star, right? Brando wanted to be a big star and he got what he thought he wanted. He didn't like the deal he made, but he never disowned it, just wiggled on his hook and complained about it.

True, William. The famous poets (and writers) pretty much had a skeleton key to the bedrooms of certain kinds of girls and women. And they could sense them when they walked into the room.

Paul म्हणाले...

They say, "bad press is better than no press."

And that is why movie stars don't mind tabloids.

And it's also why Trump keeps up his circus act.
