"Alyson Hobbs, who literally wrote the book on 'racial passing,' said there’s 'certainly a chance that she identifies as a black woman and there could be authenticity to that.'"
ADDED: Hobbs — whose first name is misspelled in that quote (it should be Allyson) — wrote a NYT op-ed that was published a couple days after she got this publicity. I blog that op-ed here.

Black is about running social scams, not skin color.
I cant top that
"Race" is a more fluid concept than gender, which is mostly rigidly determine by a single chromosome.
Come the next official, U.S. Census, I invite you all to be black like meeeeeeee!
But am I serious or ciskidding?
SO are we going to revisit Bill Clinton's claim he was the first black president and tell Obama he wasn't?
Some aspects of gender and sexuality are socially constructed. Others are not.
Pretty much the entirety of race is socially constructed.
This is the inconvenient truth of Caitlyn Jenner and Rachel Dolezal.
Yep, race is an industry. A tax-exempt one at that. *cough*
I wonder if they have a GDP measurement for it?
As long as we wish to benefit people based on their race, we'll always have this--and who are we to prove someone doesn't have some other race's blood in them? It's not like there's a "black" gene.
Maybe if some of these race hustling SJWs took a step back and considered others as individuals and not racial groups they'd realize it doesn't matter what someone says they are, because there'd be no upside to lying and it wouldn't make a difference if someone lied anyway.
it's a personality disorder that leads to misleading people, which then causes myriad problems for the person and the people around that person
Condi Rice fully understands this principle.
So Warren was, temporarily, trans-Native American?
If she claimed she were a tiger, and wanted to leave with her own kind, we would say she is clearly delusional. But tigers don't vote Democrat.
If that lady could authentically be black, then Althouse and Tank could too, and both of us are practically albinos skin color wise. There is nothing authentic about her being black.
We have truly passed into some alternate universe where delusion is treated as authentic.
“certainly a chance that she identifies as a black woman and there could be authenticity to that.”
There could be "authenticity" to that? As opposed to "truth?"
Let me see if I understand this ..
If, while you are maturing or even later, you decide that your 'real' gender or race doesn't match your biology then it's perfectly ok to adopt a persona of (i.e. fake being) your 'real' gender or race. We'll even subsidize the mutilation of your body to match your 'real' gender (hairstyles and spray tans, not so much evidently).
On the other hand, your sexual orientation is fixed at birth (even though there is no such thing as a SO gene, no no no!). If you are uncomfortable with the relationship between your sexual orientation and your biology, your SO trumps biology and in no way will you be allowed to even think that you might adopt a sexual orientation that corresponds with your biology.
correct?
This is authentically stupid.
I prefer the authenticity of Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi.
I am Laslo.
Acting white is verboten, but trans-black is acceptable.
Which one requires more responsibility??
"'there's certainly a chance that she identifies as a black woman ..."
There's also a chance that she was abducted by aliens as she slept, and can you prove she wasn't?
Considering that she seems to lie about just about anything and everything, the simplest explanation (Ockham's Razor) is that she lied about her race because she perceived it to be to her advantage to do so .
Surely this "trans*" theme should at least reference Ursula Le Guin's novel, "The Lathe of Heaven"?
In the novel, the protagonist had only to dream "effectively," and reality would change to match the dream!
Imagine the mockery if it turned out the Ben Carson was actually, authentically, not black?
She gets a pass cause she is in the "in group". She will be indulged because she votes the right way, makes fun of the proper people and supports the correct causes.
Who cares if she lied all of these years and is really just a white girl? Hell, she could really have a penis tucked up in there and it would not matter.
Rubio has some traffic tickets though! Now THAT is news! Oh, and that SOB bought a BOAT!
...did she (Rachel Dolezal) or did she not send herself false hate mail?...
I can't escape the sense that sometime in the last ten years, the definition of the word "authenticity" has changed.
Even if she did send herself hate mail, there might be some authenticity in it. Just ask Dan Rather.
There could be "authenticity" to that? As opposed to "truth?"
Who needs facts when one has "authenticity", right?
I wonder what makes her black in her mind? A love of grape soda? Fondness for fried chicken? Poor credit?
I can only imagine, just like Jenner, the sheer volume of blatant racism that underscores her love of the culture.
And blacks don't seem to mind --- showing just how useless their culture is. Just like feminsts stand by Jenner, showing how utterly bankrupt their entire ideology is.
did she (Rachel Dolezal) or did she not send herself false hate mail?...
A California Dem won a race for a House seat by having an ex-staffer for the Republican do EXACTLY that.
My daughter has been annoying me about this for awhile now.
She wants to go to a university that costs around $25,000.00 a year. She also thinks she might be able to get a full ride to one of these universities (Granted, she is only 14 and still believes in fairy tales).
I keep telling her with her Native American heritage, she could easily get a full ride. Universities would love to have more Native American's.
She keeps insisting that the part of her that is Native American is too small to count.
I need to start pointing out stories like this to her. It's time for her to reject her white privilege and embrace her Native American ancestors.
This "racial identity" business isn't as black and white as some people seem to think (yes, that's a little joke). Take Barack Obama. He's half white and half black. He was raised largely by white family members in somewhat exotic, but non-African American, environments. When he decided to go into politics he knew he would be much more likely to be accepted as a black candidate than as a white candidate. So he took steps to become black. That's "authentic" (if you think that something that's done for largely political reasons can be "authentic").
Ms. Dolezal's problem is that, unlike Obama, she doesn't seem to have a significant black genetic heritage. She doesn't naturally look black. The photos of her younger self rebut her created black identity. She needs make up and a wig (or something) to "pass" as black. It seems to most observers that her claiming to be authentically black is a bridge too far. But if she'd had a black grand parent, maybe that could have been enough.
So, some people may be able to choose a racial identity, but not everyone can. Wishing will not make it otherwise.
I recall one of Heinlein's novels in which, about half way through, we learn that the hero is black. He lives in a future era in which race means nothing. Heinlein's point was that race shouldn't be important. I agree, but I don't see us moving in that direction. Do you?
There are at least three elements to being Black in the United States: heritage, appearance, and cultural identity. I don't think that just having one of those elements is enough to be considered "authentically Black."
As long as you have lower standards (affirmative action, "diversity" quotas, whatever), for one skin color group, you'll have folks pretending to be members of that group to get the easier ride.
Frankly, every single Asian in the University of California system should start self-idenitfying as black on all paperwork.

No, I just mark the "Other" block and write in "Human." They hate that because it forces them to confront their own racism by demanding an answer. They actually came to my door last time demanding an answer.
I'd take the views of Melissa Harris-Perry more seriously if she wore tampon earrings.
Well, at least some people are being consistent.
Race is a complex amalgam of biology, culture, and perception. Racial self-identification is not the issue.
If a male can turn himself into a women because "he" feels like a women "inside", and a Caucasian women can turn herself into a Black women because she feels like a Black person "inside", why can't a person turn himself or herself into a wolf or a tiger because they feel like a wolf or tiger "inside". Hell, there's even a ready-made word for this: trans-species.
"She wants to go to a university that costs around $25,000.00 a year."
Are there still any of those around ? Even in-state tuition is about that level.
Dartmouth has a real scholarship program for Indian kids and I don't know what criteria are used. If you have any evidence, think about it.
During the Jim Crow era it was very difficult for the racist hierarchy to establish who fit into what racial classifications--whether you used the "one drop rule" or the grandparent rule, people who were on the margins had a legitimate question of their identities because of course if you were the wrong race you couldn't sit in certain train cars or have certain jobs or marry certain people. Obviously anyone on the cusp would wish to be identified as white, since that meant legal privileges.
It's a different side of the same coin today that racialists wish to mete out points (whether in the form of affirmative action quotas, or simply social capital) to those who are identified as certain races, and again there's an incentive to find yourself on the other side of the racial barrier--who wouldn't want to identify as black if that meant getting into a more competitive school, or receiving a scholarship, or even something as mudane as getting the final word in an argument about race? I would be shocked if there weren't thousands of white kids with only the most tenuous black ancestry (or even none at all) trying to leverage that into getting into school, or jobs.
We can, and should, laugh at those stuck gnashing their teeth over the Rachels of the world who basically cheated her way to take some racial privileges that an actual black person might have had, all the while knowing she could revert to "white" if it suited her. Because as long as we try and benefit others based on race, there will be millions of Rachels pulling this stunt.

I definitely have evidence. My in-laws are all Mormon and insane about tracking their lineage. My children definitely have Native American blood in them.
There could be some authenticity to someone who has a mixed racial background to identify as one of those races over another, despite external features. Too bad for Dolezal that she is not of a mixed racial background.
She lied about who her father is. That is Trans-parently inauthentic.
