I asked for an explanation of Hillary's giant-gaping-collar costume, and you answered!

Here's where I ask, and here's the puzzling outfit:

I'm going to say right off the bat, my favorite — because it made me laugh a lot and because it's pretty damned arty — comes from Unknown, who remembered this get-up worn by the actor Emil Jannings in the 1930 movie "The Blue Angel":

And extra points to Eric the Fruit Bat for subtlety, saying "I'll let the link do the talking" and taking us here:

And to m stone for having the same idea but spelling out the functionality of a big, gaping collar: "The collar is designed to accept the bubble helmet that is worn with it." He chooses "the Alan Shepherd model":

Then we've got 2 from "Star Trek," from Quaestor and madAsHell, respectively:

The first guy is doing especially well in the gaping collar department, while the second one connects with the medallion around the neck.

And, also with a bold medallion, it's the Emperor Ming, from yoobee:

ObeliskToucher said "She's Sontaran, obviously...":

And finally — also getting a LOL from me — Joe Schmoe said "I thought she was going for the turtle look":

I'm going with Sontaran. It fits in with the more militaristic image. I'd like to see if the helmet matches the collar though.

Rumpletweezer म्हणाले...

Oh, and she's significantly under-inflated as well.

Capt. Schmoe म्हणाले...

Rubbish. It is a post surgery collar, designed to keep her from licking her wounds. The damage from the steady stream of negative press has taken it's toll.

Ouch! That one will leave a mark.

heh -- this is funny as hell! Althouse, if they kill off tenure, you have a future as a comedian:)

Jaq म्हणाले...

It is clear that the vibe she is going for is Empress.

Jan R. म्हणाले...

For me, it's not the collar, it's the necklace. It looks at first glance as if her head had been stapled back on by an incompetent plastic surgeon. If you're a woman of a certain age, the last thing you need is to draw attention to your neck, and you especially don't want people to think you're a project of Dr. Frankenstein.
Who is advising her??

Gahrie म्हणाले...

Remember this post when Althouse writes about how she is voting for Hillary because the republicans have been so mean......

Jan R. म्हणाले...

P.S. As an aside, I love how the Star Trek costumes look like they were made on someone's home machine using a Vogue pattern and some stitch witchery. Fabulous!

It's a safety device. The oversized collar, likely sitffened internally with wire, is designed to keep the medallion as low on the upper body as possible. If the medallion were to have been placed high on the upper body the resulting weight imbalance would either cause the neck to snap or the entire body to pitch over head first.

Keeping the medallion low allows the larger, more powerful haunches and hind quarters to counter balance and maintain the body in an upright position.

Clearly her wardrobe of late has been designed by top men.

Top. Men.

That's not a necklace; it's a gasket.

I think she's going for the Ming the Merciless look to over compensate for her obvious failures.

BUT WHAT OF HER SOUL? SHE LOST HER BODY BUT NOT HER EVIL MIND!

As usual, Bill is behind this one...

Her brain kept alive by experimental science. By a man who’s abnormal passions inspired him to try the impossible. His mad ambitions and desires threaten every woman possessing an attractive body. Girls who’s measurements make them beauty contest participants. Professional figure models, such as this. All are prey to his distorted desire.

Imho, this is as old and haggard as HRC has looked in a photo. My guess is that this is what Drudge was going for.

I think his message is something like: 'Look, look it's an old geezer-lady. Make fun of her. Ha ha, old lady!'

Anywho, even if that wasn't his point, it does seem to be the result for Althouse and her commenting pals.

Jaq म्हणाले...

PB&J,
We can only strive to achieve the exalted level of discourse the Democrats used when debating Sarah Palin's merits as a candidate.

That's my bar. I won't go any lower than that.

You may think that someone in their golden years who has a lot of control over how her own up-to-date images are displayed on the tubes, e.g. only showing the back of her head and choosing what other images should be posted, would be self-aware and human enough to restrain from taking part in and promoting the bashing the looks of other aging gals.

You'd be wrong.

Jaq म्हणाले...

Whatever.

You would think that a political party that accuses the other of a "war on women" wouldn't unleash massive doses of white hot misogyny against every female candidate running against them, but you would be wrong.

Besides, it's not her looks, it's the ridiculous outfit. She chose that outfit. She chose to give a speech in that outfit. It betrays a certain lack of self awareness.

Jaq म्हणाले...

You would think that a party that decries a "rape culture" in America would not swallow their revulsion and put a woman whose biggest accomplishment was to marry a powerful man who has been credibly accused multiple times of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape, and whose role was to bash accusers as "nuts and sluts" who either, "couldn't be raped because they were whores" or "Were wearing the wrong clothes so they were asking for it" or "lied during an inquisition into past romantic relationships so they can't be believed."

You would be wrong.

Strange but true is that Hillary's wide collar outfit with a chest medallion look closely resembles the Pontifex Maximus vestment that must be worn ceremonially in a Pontifical Mass given by a presiding Roman Bishop or Pope.

PB&J, there's a difference between:

1) Making fun of a woman for aging, and

2) Making fun of a very wealthy person, who has deliberately pushed himself or herself into the spotlight, for wearing something that demonstrates that a) he or she has no taste, and b) is so stupid he or she has failed to hire someone (competent) to cover for that lack of taste.

The fact that you cannot distinguish between the cases makes you fair game for

1) mockery on the grounds that you're an idiot, or

2) contempt and hatred on the grounds that you're hack partisan scum disingenuously engaged in the vile project of deliberately obfuscating reality.

Either way, I quite sincerely hope that you suffer an accident that prevents your genes from further polluting the gene pool.

chickelit म्हणाले...

I go with the turtle look too. In the turtle look, the collar must be oversized to let the entire head pass through during retraction. Hillary has been silent for a while now. She was just sticking her head out gingerly -- hoping it doesn't get loped off metaphorically.

That's not an out fit she packs in that little wheelie carryon bag. That collar alone likely comes with specific blocking to make sure it doesn't get damaged. That perfect circle does stay that way because of starch, it's got some serious plastic reinforcing.

Sammy Finkelman म्हणाले...

It was in Houston, home of the space program, so maybe it makes sense Hillary Clinton would wear an astronaut's suit.

Except that all the pictures of Sally Ride show her wearing something blue. And not a suit like this.

But Mae Jemison did wear orange, and she was black, like Barbara Jordan.

Mary; lose the 'bald spot' unless you want to discuss thinning hair among the elderly in general which includes women. Your ideology is showing and your lack of appreciation for Freudian psychology regarding your queen, Hillary.

Jaq म्हणाले...

Right, let's mock Walker's bald spot which he can't control vs Hillary's clothing choices which she can control because... misandry!.... err, no, because social justice!

BTW, I have nothing against mocking Walker's bald spot if you want to go there. Like I said, my standard is "If a Democrat wouldn't say it about George Bush or Sarah Palin, I won't say it!" I think that is the best way to elevate political discourse.

Jaq म्हणाले...

If Walker makes attempts to hide his bald spot, like spray-on hair or something, my assumption is that the whole internet will come down on him, and rightly so.

Jaq म्हणाले...

A little-known private foundation controlled by Bill and Hillary Clinton donated $100,000 to the New York Times’ charitable fund in 2008, the same year the newspaper’s editorial page endorsed Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary, according to tax documents reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.

The Clinton Family Foundation, a separate entity from the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, has been the family’s vehicle for personal charitable giving since 2001.

It is funded directly by the Clintons and distributes more than $1 million a year to civic and educational causes.

The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund is a charity affiliated with the newspaper that assists underprivileged New Yorkers. It is run by members of the New York Times Company’s board of directors and senior executives.

The Times’ editorial board endorsed Clinton against Democratic challengers John Edwards and Barack Obama on January 25, 2008, writing that she was “more qualified, right now, to be president.”

Maybe we shouldn't be talking about why she chooses to dress like a comic book sooper villain!

Bob Ellison म्हणाले...

I kinda like the outfit. It's weird in an Eastern European kind of way.

That medal is so huge that it almost disappears under the podium. That might be a modest way to wear a medal: make it a foot in diameter and dangle it from a ribbon so long that it hangs below your knees. It says, "I have this big-ass medal, so big-ass heavy you don't even want to see it, because it's way down there."

Brando म्हणाले...

This was a clever test put together by Clinton's expensive advisers--see if they can get us mesmerized by her ridiculous cartoon outfit. You'll notice none of us are talking about whatever was reported in the original article (I admit I don't even know what her speech was about! I was captivated by her awful costume!). The headline could have been "Hillary to supporters--'kill as many babies as you can so I can drink their blood'" and we wouldn't have noticed.

So now, they're going to have her go full Lady Gaga and wear a bologna dress (which may be how she firt wooed Bill, as he is known for exquisite taste and exacting standards for both women and lunch meat) while she gives a speech about her plans to poison our drinking water.
