Dylann Storm Roof.

"The gunman wanted in the killing of nine people at a prayer meeting at a historic black church in this city’s downtown area was taken into custody Thursday morning in North Carolina."
Mr. Roof’s Facebook profile picture shows him wearing a jacket decorated with the flags of two former white supremacist regimes, in apartheid-era South Africa and in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe....

“I have to do it,” the gunman was quoted as saying. “You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go.”
The link goes to the NYT where the top-rated comment — with 2,427 up-votes — sets out a bullet-point list of possible reasons why this happened:
• Hysterical, paranoid gun culture enabled by states trying to outdo each other with permissiveness

• Hysterical, hate-mongering right-wing TV "news," talk show hosts, web sites

• Foaming-at-the-mouth incitements to racism

• Continued un- and underemployment

He will be charged with killing a bunch of innocent people and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. If (when) he is found guilty, he should be sentenced to death and executed as soon as possible (months, not decades).

While hate was apparently the motivation for this senseless and inexcusable crime, it makes no real difference in the charge of multiple murders. All the blathering about hate crimes can't make a death sentence (and execution) more severe. What are you going to do, kill him again (or slower)?

I was thinking more along the lines of Ismaaiyl Brinsley. No doubt NYT commenters accepted full responsibility for his murders due to their inflammatory and ultimately erroneous framing of the Michael Brown case. Funny, but I don't recall anyone on the left accepting that reasoning.

The NYT article is here, but they either didn't allow or no longer show comments. I wonder why?

Followed by the introduction of a "trillion dollar" note to seal their fate.

As for the murder in North Carolina, due process, and upon conviction, abortion... I mean, capital punishment. Also, upholding the Second Amendment to recognize and enable law-abiding citizens to carry out self-defense as first responders.

Original Mike,

I remember that well, and I also remember that the meme of white racists burning black churches got WAY out in front of the facts. Fire bombings so heinous that The Atlantic author cites neither suspects, arrests, prosecutions, nor convictions. Those fire bombing racists sure are a crafty bunch.

The person to blame for a shooting spree is--shocker!--the shooter. Could this have been prevented if the shooter had no access to guns? Sure, but with hundreds of millions of private guns in this country (both legal and otherwise) good luck eliminating them. Could this person have been inspired by right wing radio? Sure, to the same extent you could blame mass media, including violent movies and video games. I don't really listen to talk radio, but please let me know if Limbaugh did any broadcasts (among three decades of them) where he said anything remotely close to "damn black people, someone should go shoot them up in their church!"

Or are we back to saying it's all "dog whistling"? It's hard for me to keep up with the rank opportunism.

Brando म्हणाले...

"Because this IS quite unusual."

I'll note something else--there was a time of course when wanton killing of blacks by whites WAS the "culture"--Emmett Til being viciously tortured and murdered, ostensibly because he "whistled" at a white woman, and the authorities doing nothing to find the killers and bring them to justice. Such violence was a regular occurrence, and worse, the law turned a blind eye. That was the "culture".

The fact that this sort of shooting made big news (unlike say the near daily murders in Baltimore) says a lot about how rare this is, even in the South, and the fact that the authorities (including local and state authorities) acted quickly to find this guy, and it seems even white southern conservatives are disgusted by what this guy did, says a lot--it says the "culture" today is clearly against this type of thing.

But hey, I get that the Left was greatly disappointed when the Tucson shooter, the Boston marathon bomber, and the Sandy Hook shooters all failed to turn out to be right wing tea partiers, so of course they're thrilled that this killer seems to be a white racist. Think for a minute how sick it is to be pleased by any aspect of this. The only good news here is that they caught the guy so quickly.

What is ridiculous here is that you guys have planted acres of the internet with your untethered by any actual knowledge thoughts on all the problems that beset black culture. Acres and acres. Yet, white culture is failing in the US, particularly younger white males, who seem to have collectively lost the plot. This might suggest, to some, that a little humility would not be out of place. And, maybe a little introspection. The intellectual competitiveness of our country is declining both relatively and I suspect absolutely, yet you guys think you have done a great job. Your smug, complacent, self-congratulatory, nothing-wrong-with-us attitude is a major contributor to this decline.

Currently we have as a viable candidate for President a guy who was too lazy to finish college and is now attempting to 'fix' one of the best universities in the country, while much of the rest of his state is in chronic disrepair. Cultural signalling outweighs commonsense or even basic prioritization. We? We haven't presided over that. The decline pretty much tracks with the takeover of the universities by the left wing grievance industry. We were competitive when we focused on achievement - physics, math, history, literature. The decline really accelerated when achievement was traded for grievances and real classes were traded for "studies" classes. Look in the mirror if you want to catch the culprit in that fiasco.

Walker's history has been discussed in-depth on this blog. Go read the Politifact article about him. Nowhere does it suggest he quit school because he was lazy. The Politifact article says he was running for political office (and working full-time) shortly after leaving school and knocked on 13,000 doors in a losing bid. Yeah, he was lazy. Don't be a tool. Facts are your friend.

I Callahan म्हणाले...

What is ridiculous here is that you guys have planted acres of the internet with your untethered by any actual knowledge thoughts on all the problems that beset black culture. Acres and acres.

Vague, at best. Pick an item and argue it.

Yet, white culture is failing in the US, particularly younger white males, who seem to have collectively lost the plot.

OK, we agree on the effect. But strangely enough, it is your side that needs to look in the mirror to see the cause of this. The Great Society programs of the 1960's not only ruined the black family, but after 50 years, is now ruining the white family. That's just one cause. Another is the radical feminist agenda being pushed in the schools, which is one of the direct causes of young men starting to tune out of the world.

This might suggest, to some, that a little humility would not be out of place. And, maybe a little introspection.

Classic projection. Your side ought to be doing this, because of what I already said - you're the cause.

The intellectual competitiveness of our country is declining both relatively and I suspect absolutely, yet you guys think you have done a great job.

All we're trying to do is stick our fingers in the dam while your side keeps firing missiles into it. What the hell do you expect us to do?

Your smug, complacent, self-congratulatory, nothing-wrong-with-us attitude is a major contributor to this decline.

More projection. No one is more smug, complacent and self-congratulatory than a liberal progressive. No one.

Currently we have as a viable candidate for President a guy who was too lazy to finish college and is now attempting to 'fix' one of the best universities in the country,

Huh? Finish college? Please. Most people who have a good work ethic and didn't even go to college are smarter, and more common sensical than most people who graduated from college.

Dude, here's a little news for you: you aren't qualified to wear Scott Walker's jockey shorts. He's forgotten more about the real world than you'll ever know. So before you start pointing fingers, maybe you ought to look in the mirror. I'm beginning to see a common theme in your comment with all of this holier-than-thou bluster.

while much of the rest of his state is in chronic disrepair.

Nope. The prior administrations in Wisconsin get blame for that. All Walker's trying to do is fix it.

Cultural signalling outweighs commonsense or even basic prioritization.

Hah! More projection.

The US was once the intellectual leader of the world. It was a brief reign.

Yup. When Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, FDR, LBJ and now Obama put their policies in place, the country's intellectual prowess was further eroded each time.

Progressivism is at fault for every single thing that's gone wrong with regards to your screed, yet you don't have the stones to see that, even though the evidence is plainly obvious and right in front of you.

While the Charleston Mayor and the media immediately blamed the Second Amendment, and used this latest tragedy to advocate further gun control, those familiar with the MO of mass shooters in cases like this will be asking whether anti-depression drugs are once again involved.

As CCHR documents, psychiatric drugs have been involved in at least 31 different school shootings and other massacres over the last 25 years.

Despite it being reported that prescription drugs were found in the apartment of ‘Batman’ shooter James Holmes days after the Aurora massacre, it took nine months to find out exactly what those drugs were. Like Columbine killer Eric Harris, Holmes had been taking Zoloft, an SSRI drug linked with episodes of mania.

The connection between Zoloft and violent outbursts is well documented. Countless studies identify Zoloft as being responsible for more than 1,000 suicides and hundreds of episodes of mania and aggression.

There was also an apparent attempt to shield information concerning whether or not Sandy Hook gunman Adam Lanza was taking psychiatric drugs. In September 2013, we reported on the State of Connecticut refusing to release Lanza’s medical records over fears that divulging the identity of the antidepressants he was taking would, “cause a lot of people to stop taking their medications,” according to Assistant Attorney General Patrick B. Kwanashie.

Fort Hood gunman Ivan Lopez, who shot dead three colleagues and injured 16 others before turning the gun on himself in April last year, was also taking psychiatric medication before the shooting. Staff Sgt. Robert Bales was also taking anti-depressant drugs when he massacred 16 Afghan civilians in 2012.

As the website SSRI Stories profusely documents, there are literally hundreds of examples of mass shootings, murders and other violent episodes that have been committed by individuals on psychiatric drugs over the past three decades. The number of cases is staggering, but the media has completely failed to generate a national conversation about the issue due to its obsession with exploiting mass shootings to demonize the Second Amendment.

Pharmaceutical giants who produce drugs like Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil spend around $2.4 billion dollars a year on direct-to-consumer television advertising every year. By running negative stories about prescription drugs, networks risk losing tens of millions of dollars in ad revenue, which is undoubtedly one of the primary reasons why the connection is habitually downplayed or ignored entirely.

Cecil Rhodes funded his scholarships from the fortune he made in diamonds, diamonds ripped from the Womb of Mother Earth by the manacled hands of African laborers who often worked and lived in conditions of penal servitude. Among Rhodes recorded sayings are such revelatory quotes as “The native is to be treated as a child and denied the franchise. Their endless, nauseating obsession with talking about how black people should behave would be a start. Twelve fucking posts on Dolezal. It's a sick obsession. Race, race, race, the commentators here are obsessed with race and Althouse panders to them to keep up her hit count.

Why not focus on the problems in their own communities? God knows, there is no shortage. 83 percent of white murder victims were killed by whites. 36 percent of those killed by whites are women. The rate of white-on-white killing in the US is much higher than in other european nations.

If the discussion of violence was based on threat level, rather than racially based then, since almost everyone, if not everyone, here is white then a rational discussion of violence would have more than 4 posts on white-on-white violence versus 1 post on black violence. Good luck finding a discussion like that.

Technically, harrogate is correct: the US is more violent than most European countries. But, in true lefty lie by sin of omission, it's what's not said that's as important as what is said.

The first point is that the US is as large as all of Europe, and has as much regional variation between its states & regions as the Europeans do among their countries. Thus, lumping together Louisiana with Montana, makes as much sense as lumping Albania with Norway.

Also, compare the list of murders by state with the list of percentages of blacks in the population. Notice the correlation. Other states with a high percentage of Mexican immigrants, legal & illegal, also have high murder rates.

The ugly truth about American murder is that it's heavily minority. If you live in "whitey white" Montana or Vermont, you're actually less likely to get murdered than in Great Britain or France.

Here's a listing of the murder rate by country, which unfortunately is sorted by continent so it takes some looking at to make sense of. Look at the numbers of the western European countries & notice how, statistically, they all seem to cluster around 1%. But move to eastern Europe, and the numbers start spiking, in spite of the fact that eastern Europe is too poor to have large immigrant communities like western Europe.

The reason for this is that the numbers for western European countries are bogus. The police in these countries have absolutely no idea what goes on in the immigrant communities that are "no-go" zones for them (e.g. how long did it take the British police to discover that massive, on-going, rape ring in a Pakistani neighborhood?). Seriously, do you think that Spain has a 0.8% murder rate? Does your affluent Londoner or Parisian act as if the murder rate is 1%, or do they act like Americans did in the 70's, avoiding certain neighborhoods at all costs?

It is a vital part of the corporate self-image of Western Europe that they aren't as violent as those "cowboy" Americans. Unfortunately for that self-image, they have imported a crew of very nasty & violent immigrants into their midst. They deal with that unpleasant reality by avoiding those people at all cost, including letting them do whatever to each other in their own neighborhoods, where out of sight is out of mind, and also out of statistics.

This isn't the only common stat that's bogus. Infant mortality is another. In the US, if you're born & you die (e.g. at risk preemies), you go into the infant mortality stats. In Europe, if a risky birth goes awry, the child is "stillborn", and not counted in the infant mortality stats.

Not all whites, just the nitwits who post obsessively about race here. Let it go brother. There's more to life than obsessing about the goings on of black folks, about which, let's be honest, most people here know nothing of value.

There's never been anyone less self aware.

Except for you, apparently, if you can't see that this blog and its commenters have become obsessed with race - 12 posts on Dolezal, over a thousand comments about a complete nonentity. Althouse even managed to slip race into a discussion about who should go on the $10 bill. It's become a farce.

Yes, I can understand you being honest about your lack of knowledge.

This kid will turn out to be psychotic and all the navel gazing by the left will accomplish noting of value, but then that is their history. I am almost finished with Fred Siegel's "The Revolt Against the Masses," and it is excellent. ARM could get much from it but he won;t read it, of course.

This story is about mental health, not race.

Very few conservatives comment at kos.

Michael K, I've started _Revolt Against the Masses_. It tells a very similar story to John Carey's _The Intellectuals And The Masses: Pride and Prejudice Among the Literary Intelligentsia, 1880-1939_. Carey's book is specific to England. In England, according to Carey, the intellectual class sought to replace the aristocrats who were decimated and weakened politically by the First World War.

Right. There are no racial events in the national news that might explain this. It's obsession.

Just to test this idiotic theory I stopped over at Talking Points Memo, a left leaning blog whose advocates like to pretend is reasonable. Of the first 20 articles 17 are racial. The corresponding number for Althouse is 6 of 20.

Lewis Wetzel म्हणाले...

It is, of xourse, the Left who believes that a race-neutral statement like "People on welfare should have to work" is loaded down with racial significance that only they can detect.

Certainly true for AMR, whose contribution is cheering the death of 9 people because it justifies him expressing his hatred.

Ghoul.

This is a fun game. I'll take Meaningless Stats for 500 please, Alex.

Your methodology is shit, ARM. "black" is a color as well as a race. Say, do you work in the social research racket?

'Althouse' and 'Laslo' currently returns 246,000 results. Hence: Laslo is half as important as all the blacks in America combined.

It is good to be Laslo. I am Googley Biracial.

I am Laslo.

Dear God, you are the most obtuse commenter I've ever seen. You've been given reams of substantive response, yet either you didn't read them, or some mental block (trigger?) went into effect the second you saw something that didn't hold to your preconceived belief system.

Fen's Law is in play here - you are refuting points that ARM doesn't really believe in. Waste of your time. You have to find out his true position and motivation and address that instead.

I'm going with "ARM hates people with guns preventing his Marxist utopia"

Dr Weevil म्हणाले...

Someone claiming to be reasonable and a man writes these two sentences: "Their [=Althouse commentators'] endless, nauseating obsession with talking about how black people should behave would be a start. Twelve fucking posts on Dolezal." What's wrong with this juxtaposition? Dolezal's problems have nothing to do with the behavior of black people, because Dolezal is not black. The only example ARM bothers to give of our supposed obsession with the problems of black people is no such thing, and he's too stupid to notice just how stupid his argument is.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@Fen, I'm with you. The way to deal with ARM is to give him the old horse laugh. He's a Prog. He does not debate in good faith, he does not negotiate in good faith, he misses no chance to vent his hatred of anyone who has the temerity to respond to his infantile spewings.

cubanbob म्हणाले...

ARM take two Dolezal with milk and you will feel better in the morning.

As for this shooter, why did the cops mess up and not have killed him while resisting arrest? Could have done the country a favor. The killer sat in the church for an hour with his victims while they were in prayer service before he killed them. For that alone he deserves no mercy. As for the killer's father, hang that jerk as well. First who gives a kid such a ridiculous name like Dylann Storm Roof? The name alone is almost guaranteed to make him a bit loony and who would stupid enough to buy a gun for a kid this crazy? Hang the father for creating the freak.

What this country needs is nut control and violent criminal control, not more misguided gun control.

Fen ARM doesn't really abhor guns, he only abhors the wrong sort of people having guns.

I have a suggestion. I don't want to hear this guy's name. I don't want to hear any of these guy's names. I don't want to hear about his pathetic life or his twisted views on anything. Just call him "sick evil loser" and be done with it.

It might be an interesting commentary on American society to compare/contrast all the comments with the most "thumbs up" on a NYT story after a mass shooting. O' to be a professor or a grad student again with plenty of time on my hands.

Don't take if you're allergic to any of they ingredients of
Dolezal, or have a family history of caucasoiditis. Possible side effects include darkening of the skin and changes in hair texture. May cause delusion and lack of self-awareness. Consult your doctor right away if these symptoms last more than eight years.

Yeah, I caught that too.

Michael K म्हणाले...

ARM just doesn't get that this is about mental health, just like the Connecticut shooting, the Tucson shooting and the Colorado shooting. The shooters were all psychotic. Guns should not be in the hands of psychotics, there I'll agree with you.

Imagine if one of those parishioners had had a concealed weapon. I wonder how many people realize that "well controlled militia" excluded black slaves or even black freemen. Lots of black men used guns to defend themselves from the KKK.

True, Phil. I await further info on the family situation and how many red flags were ignored.
But hey..the weekend approaches. How many will be killed in Chicago? Hmm...hometown boy with dedicated library planned there doesn't want to discuss that..even while invoking the Rahm Doctrine in that presser he "had to" discuss this in.

So Obama says this doesn't happen in other countries? How many brown people have been murdered with the weapons he ran to Mexican drug cartels? How many innocents has he double tapped droned in the ME? How many people have been slaughtered with the weapons him and Hillary were running to terrorists in Syria, out of which came ISIS, and why we were in Benghazi...where they gave zero shits about the ambassador's security while knowing full well an attack was coming, ten days in advance.

First, brava! This is a historic moment and you will be credited for realizing it.

When Qaddafi himself is finally removed, you should of course make a public statement before the cameras wherever you are, even in the driveway of your vacation house. You must establish yourself in the historical record at this moment.

The most important phrase is: “successful strategy.” …

This is a very big moment historically and for you. History will tell your part in it. You are vindicated.

But a one-off crazy person taking many different kinds of drugs, both legal and illegal, kills 8 people, and we on the right need to re-examine our beliefs.
