But instead of apologizing for her mistake, Trunk doubled down on the idea that he killed himself... If you’ve never read her, the posts come across as inexplicably cruel...
I’m not sure what exactly made me turn away from Trunk’s blog. I don’t think it was any one specific post, but the gradual realization, upon closer reading, that my friends and I were mistaken in assuming that Trunk’s brazen careerism was a feminist project in any meaningful sense. Some of her posts read more like trolling than genuine advice.... Not that long after I stopped reading it, the tone of the blog got dark...

I don't know who Marin Cogan is, but I think she is reading the thermometer correctly.

There are some deaths each year from treadmill accidents but it does seem odd that it took so long for that news to become known.
Trunk has always been all hat and no cattle.
I was thankful when you stopped commenting about her inanity.
We later heard it was from a treadmill accident.
But we heard it from ($$$)Mexican officials, about ($$$)Very wealthy people.
Who came back to the US very quickly, and didn't release the cause of death for several days. And plead for privacy.
And who at first said it was at the Four Seasons, then said oh no, it happened elsewhere.
So...who knows?
It was only dark for a while. It's not dark now. I think she writes a lot about homeschooling now. She's a homeschooling evangelist.
Speculating that the guy committed suicide wasn't nice, but I don't remember anyone ever billing Trunk as nice. Sometimes she writes strange or inappropriate things. This is not new.
Unmentioned by the author, and one of the reasons I started to give trunk a pass was the awful condescending tone she took towards her husband, "the Farmer".
Now it appears he was physically abusing her. Well, that doesn't surprise me. I don't know of too many man who will be routinely publicly humiliated like that without some sort of familial fallout being the result.
First he died in the Four Seasons Punta Mita. Then it was somewhere else. Not yet noted where, but elsewhere.
Bit of a mystery. Probably an accident but....

OK, so here is where his accident apparently took place.
A very small, private room. Makes a lot more sense than the fully equipped Four Seasons fitness center.
But still, I don't think speculation is inappropriate when a public figure dies and everyone is silent about why/how.

Oh, the tone of this blog is binary. It's either light or dark.
The speculation is completely appropriate, for the reasons she gives: Sandburg is a public figure, has made a second career of publicly bragging about the wonderfulness of her marriage, and basically telling women they're screwups if they don't have the same successful types of marriages. And why should Trunk apologize? That treadmill thing is full of holes.
"....and who else would say it but me" is a little bit too self-congratulatory.

I would land on her blog periodically, but not lately. It always just seemed so odd -- "homeschooling" that took the form of 4-hour commutes to music lessons, and whatever the kids did on their own initiative. And I could never really picture spending, what, a hundred bucks more for a phone conversation in which she would career-coach the client.
Spergs may not be born with a natural sense of decorum, but that doesn't excuse failing to develop one.
She's half right. It is spiteful and ugly. It is not appropriate to speculate that the cause of death was suicide.
I don't know this Trunk, but the first post of hers that I ever read has now caused me to grant her little credibility.
Goldberg was a "Beloved Silicon Valley CEO". I wonder how true that is too.

Brazen careerism is only acceptable when it serves to 1. condescend to non-working women 2. bitch at conservative men.
Of course, leaning in is not brazen. Nor is it bossy.
The NYT told us that Goldberg was the world's greatest mentor of women, a man chicks could lean on, so his death had nothing to do with personal relationships or his feelings about them.
It's always good to wait a bit for the facts to come out. Since Trunk isn't going to become an investigative reporter it might be a good idea to let it go until there's something to say.
Same goes for Andrew Sullivan and Sarah Palin. He came up with a theory and no amount of evidence could change his mind.

Sailer's piece about the possible involvment of a drug cartel is intriguing and plausible, and would make a great plot for CSI or Law and Order. But I think Occum's Razor points to the treadmill.
The lady, her picture, the tone of her piece. Don't think I'd touch that.
Reminds me of the old line of a lady at a dinner party with Winston Churchill. She told Winston that, if her were husband, she'd give him poison. Winny replied that if the lady was his wife, he'd drink it.

Of course the fact that Harry Reid got beat up somethin' awful by "exercise equipment" on New Year's Eve--and this fellow gets killed by a piece of exercise equipment in deepest Ol' Mehico makes me wonder.

I wouldn't be shocked if Sailer was correct as he is a sharp and unconventional thinker. And if a cartel hit is true, more than one person knows and it will get out eventually.

Freeman Hunt, have you tried a rowing machine? I always looked at the one in the corner of the Y very suspiciously, but I started using a Water Rower a few months ago and I LOVE it. It's also hard to fall off something that's less than a foot off the ground.

I dislike Sandberg and what she's done for women in tech (like firing everyone who was working from home) but I am sorry she lost her husband, however he died. The treadmill thing sounds a little odd, but I don't think that's my business any more than it's Trunk's.

Unless there is a trained Cardiac surgeon ready at a specialized hospital facility reachable within 15 minutes, it is always fatal. Docs call it "The Widow maker."

She's an autistic who obviously lacks people skills and the ability to relate to or appropriately empathize with others. So of course she's going to go idiotic with her "theories". The only types too ignorant to know that and avoid moving along past her train wrecks are obviously going to be Althouse sorts and other RWA loons. Does anything more really need to be said?
That said, anyone dying from a freak treadmill incident - especially while on vacation - is obviously taking the treadmill enterprise way too seriously. This really isn't much different from the narcissistic exec who drops dead from an early heart attack at 45 after failing to realize that there was more to life than 80-hour workweeks.

Yes, I love those. Legs, hips, arms, back, everything gets a workout.
The one at my gym has another boat you have to keep up with, and there is a power curve, cool down, another power curve.
You can just roll out of it when you're done, and cry for a bit.
Alas, that machine is always broke at least once a month, waiting for a new part.
Are there any useful moral lessons to be gleaned from the study of treadmills, Penelope Trunk, and Ms. Sandberg?.......My life to date has been a treadmill and someday I will die. Goldberg dramatized the common fate of humanity.

Tari, I had forgotten all about those. I love those things. My parents had one when I was a kid, and I used to use it all the time, sometimes to pretend I was rowing a boat and other times to sit with my feet on the seat and rocket to the other end of the track. The latter was not allowed, so one had to wait for the adults to go do something elsewhere.
A rowing machine is a good idea. Fun idea.
Freeman Hunt, my 12 year old thinks it's the coolest thing, too - and he's much faster than I am over short distances. He also comes in and sings "Row your Boat" when I'm trying to exercise. Lovely child. If you get one, I think it will be fun.
The one we have is a Water Rower, which gets all of its resistance from a big plastic oar moving through a tank of water. The moving water sounds beautiful as you row. It's wood too, and actually looks pretty.
Coupe, I think these models break less often than the ones I see at gyms, because they are just a series of pulleys. There are no "settings" or "speeds", so there's less to break.
